Throwing Stones

Chapter One: A Splash of Color

The bus jolted as it drove over a steep pothole.

Touya kept his hands on his lap, his gaze darting towards the pro hero currently glaring at him, his dark eyes now shining red.

"Keep that up and you'll go blind, Eraser." He smirked at him.

Said man's eyes thinned at him dangerously, "Keep quiet. You're only being allowed to leave thanks to the outreach program. That goes for the rest of you." Aizawa glared at the other prisoners scattered behind him. "You'll be staying at the Higure Shrine over the course of one year. During that time you'll be expected to perform community service, find stable jobs and make something of yourselves. Oh and be sure to thank the program's coordinator. She's the one who picked each of you specifically for this."

Touya leaned his head against the glass window.

He couldn't care less about whatever idiotic program some do-gooder pro hero put together. At the end of the day, they just wanted to pat themselves on the back and say that they did their best. It didn't matter what sort of hell any of them lived through or the kind of burdens they'd had to bear. All anyone heard was that they were 'villains' and threw them into the same category.

According to polite society, they were monsters that should be locked away forever.

"Look alive," Eraser announced. "We're here."

Touya waited as they were brought out one by one.

Their hands and ankles were cuffed so moving around freely was impossible.

Eraser and two guards stood before him.

"Your turn."

Wordless, Touya rose from his seat. He followed the first guard off of the bus and was placed in a line with six other people. He recognized a few of them from before he'd gotten arrested by his own father. He had to admit that watching Endeavor's face contort with pain and regret as he'd apprehended him had been satisfying in its own right.

"I'll take things from here." A woman approached them.

She was tiny in stature, barely coming up to his shoulders. However she had an attractive appearance about her. With dark hair and azure eyes, her features alone were attention grabbing enough.

A few of the guys next to him eyed her figure shamelessly. Touya turned his head away.

Like hell he was going to risk having his ass sent back to prison. At least here he could get some fresh air.

"Starting today, you seven will be the first members of the Second Chance Rehabilitation Program." The woman announced, smiling down at them in a welcoming manner. "We'll go over the details of your community service requirements tomorrow morning. For now let's give you guys a chance to settle in."

She clapped her hands together and the guards moved towards them. Touya held still while they unlocked his cuffs. In exchange, they'd placed a strange device around his ankle instead.

"Just because you're no longer being held in prison cells doesn't mean that you're being given free reign." Aizawa pressed on, "What we've just put on you are a more specialized version of an ankle monitor. They can read all of your vitals and determine if you're activating your quirk. They're also equipped with a high-powered taser so don't try using your powers while wearing them."

He was almost tempted to do it just to find out.

"Hawks will be present for the duration of this program. So be sure to watch yourselves." Aizawa then turned to the woman, "I'll leave them in your care."

His words were polite yet Touya could tell that the man didn't believe for a second that this program would accomplish anything. Personally, he didn't either. To them it was just a nice break from their gloomy cells. A splash of color in a world that'd long since gone grey.

Aizawa and the guards piled back into the bus. Before they left, a flurry of red feathers swept through the breeze in front of them.

"Sorry I'm late, has the welcome party started?" Hawks gave a lazy smile as he descended next to the woman.

"You're actually just in time." She pressed her hand together. She turned towards them, "As I'm sure most of you know, this is Hawks." The man flashed then a peace sign and his lazy smile widened. The woman beside him then gestured towards herself, "You may call me Kagome. For now let's get you guys to your rooms."

Touya noticed that despite Hawks' casual expression, his eyes were following them with no small amount of caution. Clearly, the hero did not trust them alone with Kagome.

His gaze shifted towards the dark-haired male beside him who was still appreciating her body from a distance.

Not like he could blame the bird for his reservations.

Kagome led them towards a large building set next to a Shrine. It was two floors and looked like it could house up to twenty people at a time. Clearly, she had been preparing for this for some time if she'd had an entire building constructed for their arrival.

His gaze shifted to the small house nestled beside it. The architecture was vastly different. With the house being constructed in a traditional Japanese style. Meanwhile the building beside it was more modern. It was shaped like a perfect box with wide-paned windows and automatic doors. He supposed that this style could be called 'modern' with its simplistic design.

Kagome brought them inside and immediately there was a collective gasp of surprise from most of his fellow prisoners. Unlike the outside, warm hues of yellow, brown and gold filled the main living space and foyer. Paintings of far away places lined the walls and several couches were set up in a circle around the television, as if to encourage open conversations.

Touya blinked as the smell of broth and noodles filtered through the air.

Was there food?

"I've already got dinner ready for everyone." Kagome's expression turned bright, "We're having soba tonight but starting tomorrow everyone will be assigned in groups of two to make dinner for everyone." She gestured towards a calendar posted on the fridge, "I have the first month's schedule set so feel free to take a look at your leisure." She then moved towards a wall of cabinetry. There were so many drawers and cabinets that he could hardly count them all. Kagome pulled one drawer out and an entire rack of spices was revealed.

The blonde teenager next to him gasped in surprise.

"Take your time familiarizing yourself with everything. We order groceries at the start of each month and have it delivered. So if there's anything you need, be sure to let me know." Kagome then pushed the drawer back and led them on a tour through the first floor.

"Cleaning days are on Sundays. You guys will be in charge of making your own schedule with each other on who cleans what each week." She then brought them to a small oversized room set up with several computers. "This is the computer lab. We don't have internet access to these machines as part of our agreement with the prison."

The dark-haired man beside him and a heteromorph groaned in unison.

Touya kept his expression impassive.

"Eventually you will need to use these to make your own resumes and CVs. We're currently contracted with several second chance hire companies, so as you make your way through the program you should be able to find long term employment with one of these companies."

Kagome led them to a room across from the lab. This one had a warmer feel to it. Small individual couches were set up throughout the space while a bookcase stretched across an entire wall, filled to the brim with an assortment of literature.

"This is, of course, the library. I've tried getting a variety of books and comics so that you can have something to for entertainment." As she explained, the man next to him immediately zeroed in on the shonen manga. "You can borrow the books at your leisure, just be sure to sign it out."

He didn't think that, that rule would be enforceable with their group but he supposed that she would learn that fact later.

She then brought them to an elevator. She hit the up button and the light above the door lit up. The doors slid up and everyone silently followed her inside. Hawks squeezed in by her right while Touya took the last spot available on her left.

He could tell that nearly everyone was virtually holding their breath. An awkward tension filled the lift as they waited for it to ascend to the next level. Eventually the doors opened and everyone piled out in a large group.

Kagome gestured towards the name plates in front of each room, "Everyone has their own assigned dorm." She approached the first room. The name plate was marked 'Touya' in fine kanji. She lifted a keycard and swiped it over a reader. A red light flashed green and the sound of a lock disengaging signaled that it was now possible for them to enter.

"Each of you will receive an ID card and you will use that as your key to both your room and this building." She walked over to a small closet, "Each of you will have your own closet, personal safe and private bathrooms in your unit. We've already stocked some of the basic necessities in your bathrooms."

Touya leaned against the wall.

It was strange seeing his new room. It was open and spacious with a glass window that stretched from ceiling to floor. A draw curtain was pulled open so they could see the view of the forest beyond the dorm.

He knew that he would only call this place home for a year, yet a part of him already felt at ease. Even if he never 'graduated' from this feel good project Kagome was putting on, he'd at least enjoy the change of environment.

"So with that said, let's get you guys your cards." She handed the one she'd used to access his room into his awaiting hands. "Touya." She nodded at him.

He tucked the card into his palm tightly.

"Tenko." She approached the dark-haired male beside her.

Touya watched as she steadily gave everyone their cards.

"Now then, dinner is to be served at 6pm sharp every evening. Attendance is required." She didn't pay the slight groans from the rest of the prisoners any mind, "So let's have some food and afterwards I'll meet with each of you about ordering some clothes."

Touya glanced down at his orange jumper. He was only allowed two pairs while in the prison. So it was inevitable that it would get dirty. It'd be nice to wear something clean for once.

"Oh! I almost forgot, those monitors are water proof. So you don't need to worry about it malfunctioning if you try to shower or bathe in it." Her smile was bright but he could see a few faces fall.

Personally, he was more curious to know how they configured a monitor with a taser that would electrocute them in the water. Who knows, maybe it would?

"Alright, who's ready for food?"

They each shared a look with each other.

This was going to be one long year.
