*Chapter 7: Confrontations and Realizations*
The days rolled into a week, and Ryan found himself back at the beach, a place that had become both a refuge and a battleground for his emotions. Summer was supportive, but the weight of Seth's resentment hung heavily in the air, making even the sunniest days feel overcast. They still spent time together, but Ryan noticed the unspoken tension between them every time they mentioned Seth.
One afternoon, as Ryan scrolled through his phone, he received a text from Summer: *Meet me at the pier? I have something to discuss.* Ryan's heart raced; he hoped it wasn't more about Seth.
Arriving at the pier, he spotted Summer leaning against the railing, the ocean breeze tousling her hair. She turned at the sound of his footsteps, her face lighting up.
"Hey," she said, stepping toward him. "Thanks for coming."
"What's up?" Ryan asked, trying to keep his tone light.
Summer hesitated, biting her lip. "I've been thinking a lot about Seth and everything. I just... I don't want to be the reason you two are fighting."
Ryan frowned. "Summer, you're not the problem. Seth is struggling to accept things. I can't change that."
"I know, but it feels wrong to be happy while he's hurting," she replied, her brow furrowed in concern.
"Maybe it's time we talk to him together," Ryan suggested. "We need to confront this, and I'd rather have you there with me."
"Really? You think he'll listen?" Summer asked, a glimmer of hope in her eyes.
"We won't know unless we try," Ryan said, determination in his voice. "He's still my brother, and you're still the girl he cares about—even if he can't see it right now."
Summer nodded, her resolve strengthening. "Okay. Let's do it."
Later that evening, they approached the Cohen house, hearts racing. Ryan could feel the nervous energy crackling in the air. As they walked through the front door, he spotted Seth lounging on the couch, an old comic book in his hands. His eyes darted up when he noticed Ryan and Summer standing there.
"What do you want?" Seth asked, his tone flat and defensive.
Ryan exchanged a glance with Summer before stepping forward. "We need to talk."
Seth leaned back, crossing his arms defensively. "About what? How you've moved on while I'm still stuck here?"
"No," Summer interjected, stepping forward. "About how we can move forward together. We're tired of this awkward tension. It's affecting all of us."
Seth's expression hardened. "You think you two can just come here and fix everything? You don't understand what it's like for me right now."
Ryan took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice steady. "You're right, I don't know exactly what you're feeling. But I do know that avoiding each other isn't helping."
"What do you want me to say? That I'm okay with it?" Seth shot back, standing up. "Because I'm not! You're with Summer, and I feel like I've lost both of you!"
"Losing both of us is your choice, Seth," Summer said, her voice firm. "You left. You ran away when things got tough. We didn't plan for this to happen, but it did. We care about each other."
Seth stared at her, his expression softening for just a moment. "And what about me?"
"You're still my brother," Ryan said, stepping closer. "But you have to meet us halfway. You can't just lash out every time we're together. It's exhausting for all of us."
Seth ran a hand through his hair, clearly struggling. "I don't know how to be okay with this. I don't know how to feel."
Ryan's heart ached for his brother. "Neither do we. But we're trying to figure it out. You don't have to go through this alone. We want you in our lives."
There was a long pause as Seth looked between Ryan and Summer, his defenses slowly crumbling. "I just don't want to lose you guys."
"You're not going to lose us," Summer reassured him, her voice softening. "But you need to let go of the anger. It's not worth it."
"I'm… I'm sorry for how I've been acting," Seth finally admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I just felt betrayed."
Ryan stepped closer, his voice sincere. "We all make mistakes, Seth. I don't want you to feel that way. You're family."
"Can we start over?" Seth asked, vulnerability creeping into his tone.
Summer nodded, smiling warmly. "Definitely. Just no more running away, okay?"
"Deal," Seth replied, a tentative smile creeping onto his face.
The atmosphere shifted, the tension slowly easing as they stood together as a unit once more. For the first time in weeks, Ryan felt a sense of relief wash over him.
That night, as Ryan and Summer walked along the beach under the stars, hand in hand, he couldn't help but feel optimistic about their future. They had a long way to go, but he knew they could navigate through it together.
"You know," Summer said, breaking the silence, "I really think we're going to be okay."
Ryan smiled, pulling her closer. "Yeah, I think so too."
And as the waves crashed softly against the shore, Ryan felt a warmth in his heart that he hadn't felt in a long time—a feeling of belonging, of hope, and of love.
