*Chapter 9: Shifting Tides*
The aftermath of the Fourth of July bonfire left Ryan feeling both elated and anxious. The fireworks had been stunning, but the real highlight was the deepening connection he felt with Summer. However, with Seth still grappling with his emotions, Ryan knew there were more conversations ahead—ones that would require honesty and vulnerability.
A few days after the bonfire, Ryan found himself sitting on the porch of the Cohen house, watching the sun dip low on the horizon. The sound of laughter echoed from inside as Sandy and Kirsten prepared dinner. Ryan's phone buzzed beside him, pulling him from his thoughts. It was a text from Summer: *Can we talk?*
He took a deep breath, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension, and quickly replied: *Of course. Where?*
*How about the beach?*
Ryan stood up and made his way to the beach, the salty breeze ruffling his hair. As he walked, he pondered the state of things with Seth. It wasn't just about their brotherly bond anymore; it was about ensuring that their friendship with Summer remained strong and stable.
When he reached the beach, he spotted Summer sitting on a blanket, her back to the water. The sunset cast a golden hue over her, illuminating her features in a warm glow. Ryan felt his heart skip a beat as he approached.
"Hey," he said softly, settling down beside her. "Thanks for inviting me."
Summer turned and smiled, her eyes sparkling. "I wanted to talk about us. About what happened after the bonfire."
"Yeah, me too," Ryan admitted. "It was nice to finally be honest, but I think we still have some things to sort out."
"Exactly," she replied, her expression serious. "I love that we're together, but I want to make sure we're both on the same page. I don't want any unresolved feelings lingering, especially with Seth around."
"I get that," Ryan said, nodding. "Seth's still adjusting to everything. I don't want him to feel like he's losing both of us."
Summer sighed, brushing her hair back from her face. "It's hard to watch him struggle. He's my friend too, you know?"
"Yeah, and I think he really wants to be okay with this," Ryan said. "But we need to give him space while also making it clear that we're committed to each other."
"Agreed," Summer replied. "I just don't want him to feel like he has to choose between us or that he's being pushed out."
Ryan nodded thoughtfully. "Maybe we can invite him to hang out with us more? It could help him feel included and remind him that we're still here for him."
Summer smiled, her expression brightening. "That's a great idea! We can start small—like grabbing lunch together or watching a movie. Something casual."
"Exactly. Just give him time to adjust," Ryan said. "I think he'll come around. He just needs to see that we're still a team."
As the sun continued to set, they talked about plans for the weekend, deciding to invite Seth for a low-key movie night at the Cohen house. It felt good to address the elephant in the room, and Ryan felt a renewed sense of hope as they laid the groundwork for healing.
The next day, Ryan texted Seth, inviting him over for movie night. To his surprise, Seth replied almost instantly: *Sounds good. What time?*
"Wow, that was fast," Ryan said to Summer, who smiled encouragingly.
"I think he's ready to give it a shot," she said. "Let's just keep the atmosphere light and fun."
That evening, the three of them gathered in the living room, the ambiance set with cozy blankets and a mountain of popcorn. Summer had picked a classic movie—*Ferris Bueller's Day Off*—knowing it would provide plenty of laughs and lighten the mood.
As the movie played, Ryan could sense the tension easing between them. Seth laughed at the antics on-screen, and for a moment, it felt like old times. Ryan exchanged glances with Summer, both of them silently relieved to see Seth smiling again.
"Okay, that was epic!" Seth said as the credits rolled. "I can't believe I've never seen that before."
"You missed out," Summer replied, tossing a piece of popcorn at him. "It's a classic!"
"Definitely," Ryan agreed. "It's like the ultimate rebellion film."
Seth leaned back on the couch, looking relaxed. "Thanks for inviting me, guys. I needed this."
Ryan felt a surge of gratitude. "We're always here for you, man. Just let us know if you want to hang out more."
"Yeah, I might take you up on that," Seth said, a hint of vulnerability in his voice. "I really appreciate it."
Summer smiled warmly. "We're a team, remember? Friends stick together."
As they continued to chat about the movie, Ryan felt a sense of ease enveloping the room. The laughter and lighthearted banter were reminders of their shared history, and he hoped they could build on that foundation.
As the night wore on, Seth began to open up about his feelings, something Ryan had hoped for. "You know, I've been feeling really lost since I got back. I thought coming home would fix everything, but it just made me realize how much I've missed."
Ryan nodded, understanding the weight of Seth's words. "It's okay to feel that way. Change is hard. We're all still figuring things out."
"I just didn't want to lose you both," Seth confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "I thought I'd come back and everything would be the same."
"Nothing stays the same," Ryan replied gently. "But that doesn't mean you're losing us. You're still my brother."
Seth looked up, meeting Ryan's gaze. "I know that now. It's just hard to adjust to seeing you and Summer together."
"We want you in our lives," Summer added, her voice full of warmth. "You're important to us."
Seth's shoulders relaxed, and for the first time in a while, Ryan saw a glimmer of hope in his brother's eyes. "Thanks, guys. I really appreciate it. I want us all to be good again."
"Then let's make it happen," Ryan said, feeling a surge of determination. "We'll keep communicating and supporting each other. That's what family does."
They shared a moment of silence, the weight of their past tensions starting to lift. In that moment, Ryan felt a renewed sense of hope. They could move forward together, stronger than before.
As the night came to a close, Ryan realized that the three of them were beginning to find their way back to each other. The path ahead wouldn't always be easy, but they were ready to face it together, one step at a time.
The next morning, Ryan woke up with a sense of optimism. The conversation with Seth had opened the door to healing, and he felt determined to nurture that connection. After breakfast, he grabbed his phone and texted Summer: *Ready for another adventure today?*
*Absolutely! What do you have in mind?* she replied almost instantly.
*How about we take Seth to the Boardwalk? I think he could use a fun day out.*
*I love that idea! Let's do it!*
As he prepared for the day, Ryan felt a sense of excitement bubbling within him. They were finally stepping into uncharted waters, ready to embrace the future together, and he couldn't wait to see where it would lead them.
