Sookie stood staring at Alcide from across the room. The couch was between them, he was singing Yankee Doodle in his head so she couldn't read him. She had resorted to chasing him around the living room trying to touch him so she could dig around in his head and figure it out. She was grateful that Gran was out with her friend Maxine, because she was acting anything but lady like right now. She didn't particularly care though. She and Alcide had been together for 3 years, he had been her personal body guard for 5 years, and he was hiding something from her.
Sookie was in the employ, and under the protection of Eric Northman, the Vampire Sheriff of Area 5. Five years ago her happy little human illusion collapsed in on itself like a dying star. Long story short, this was her best option, because she was never going back to being human. At this point she doesn't think she'd even want to go back. She's not human, and for the first time in her life feels like she belongs and has a purpose. That and Eric also pays her more money than she and Gran could ever spend. Her first year in the supernatural world wasn't her finest. She had really fought it kicking and screaming. Luckily, she's a telepath and those are not a dime a dozen, so everyone just sort of had to be patient with her and keep bailing her out until she got on the level. Pam was her primary handler, obviously she saw Eric or "Master" if they were in public around, but he had Sheriff stuff to do. He was also the southern states representative for the new Supernatural Council that has seats filled by every supernatural race. Everybody is out now and it just made more sense for safety to present a united front to the humans.
She jerked to one side, he jerked to the other. Alcide was absolutely determined to not let her touch him. He was now screaming the Star Spangled Banner in his head to keep her out. He had to figure out a way to get her to back off. One touch right now when he is so close to the full moon and she can dig around and find anything she wants. He's seen her do it to other people. He knew he was a dead man walking, but he held out hope he could figure out a way to smooth this without her finding out. He just needed time so he could go find a witch or an older vampire to glamour it out of his brain so she couldn't find out. He needed to buy time.
"You don't trust me!" He yelled at her.
"You're darn tootin. You're hiding something intentionally from me!" She yelled back. She was trying to slowly inch around the couch hoping if she moved slow enough she could close the distance. It wasn't working, if she moved he moved.
"How is this supposed to work if you won't trust me?" He said in a much more civilized tone now.
"It won't." She stated as she lunged at him. She faked going left and decided to jump over the couch right onto him instead.
she held him, using her now perfected abilities the second she touched his skin he stilled. It was like her own kind of glamour. This usually won't work on weres, but she's so familiar with his brain at this point it was no problem. She immediately shut off the noise from the stupid songs he was yelling in his head and started looking. Immediately, she was greeted with the memory of him sleeping with her friend Dawn. It had happened last night. She could tell because the top shoved up around her armpits was the same one she had on last night at Fangtasia when Alcied had dropped her off for her nightly hand off to vampire protection. Dawn had asked him to give her a ride home on his way back to Bon temps. Apparently, they just went back to his apartment instead.
Sookie let go, eased herself back and took 3 big steps backwards with her hands extended to keep distance between them. She was hurt, devastated, disgusted, angry, sad and grieving the loss of the man she had been discussing marriage with. Alcide tried to reach out for her.
"Let me explain…" he said, his tone dripping with anger.
"Nothing to explain, we're dunzo." Sookie was shaking her head. This was over, her first kiss, first boyfriend, her first….time, her first love. It was all gone. Monogamy isn't standard in the Supernatural community, but it was discussed and agreed upon in their relationship. She heard Gran coming up the drive, this was her opportunity to get away from this man who she now hated. She reached out like she was going to hold his hand and gave him the old telepathic stun again. She grabbed her purse running out, got in the passenger seat and yelled
"Drive! Go go go!"
Gran backed out like a bat out of hell, no questions asked. She even took back roads as they traveled to shreveport. She didn't need tons of back story before she listened to Sookie. She already made that mistake once and a Vampire named Bill almost killed her. She's only Alive because Eric saved her life by giving her a small amount of his blood. He said he did it because her dying "would have disturbed the telepath and made her less accommodating.". Gran decided to start encouraging Sookie to embrace her reality after that. Eric having a soft spot for Sookie was the best outcome for this twisted mess she could hope for. She was also thrilled Sookie had finally found a beau…. Or she was, until Sookie filled her in on the details on the 45 minuet drive to Fangtasia. When they arrived another were named Tray let them in.
"If Alcide shows up, do not let him in. He's compromised." Tray nodded to acknowledge the order. He was worried about his packmate though. Compromised? How? quickly asked
"Its not witches again?"
"No." She replied "he's just compromised."
Sookie and Gran slipped in and heard the door look behind them just and Alcides truck was pulling into the parking lot. The telepathic stun doesn't buy lots of time, but in this case it bought the perfect amount to just get her away from that situation. Gran saw one of her favorite bartenders and sat down for a drink and a chat. Her name was Holly and she had a young son. Gran loved seeing her and how her life had turned around after starting to work at the bar. Sookie continued into Pams office. It was winter, so luckily she only had to wait 45 more minuets until sunset. That no good, low down, dirty cheater Alcide was probably banking on her sleeping past sunset because she worked scanning brains last night until sunrise. Not the case, she had set an alarm so they could eat together before she had to go to work.
Sookie laid on the couch in Pams office and threw her arm over her eyes. Finally, the tears hit. She was heart broken. She didn't want this to be happening. There was no other choice, the relationship was over. This was the most "human" thing to happen to her in years. She wasn't in any actual danger, just heart broken. She clutched her chest, wondering why she was experiencing physical pain. By this point she was mostly just hiccuping.
Pam strode in carefully. She had seen Gran at the bar and could hear and smell Sookies tears. This was not Sookies first breakdown in her office. Was it De Castro? The Faries? Did her brother turn up dead? She quietly walked in, sure to make noise so Sookie knew she was there. She sat at her desk, clasped her hands and said
" You've sprung a leak again. Shall I ring the plumber?" Pam asked in her posh British accent."
"No… I ummm. I need a new day guard. Alcide can't do it anymore." sookie said with a sniffle.
"Why?" Pam inquired.
"We broke up." Sookie said.
"Okay, and he cannot still guard you because?" Pam asked waving her hand in a manner indicating Sookie would need to elaborate. Sookie took in a deep breath and said
"Because we were in a CLOSED relationship. He opened it without permission." Pam understood exactly what Sookie was saying, but her Vampire nature had her needing more clarification.
"And this means he can no longer simply work for you in a professional capacity? Good ware guards aren't easy to find."
"Yeah, he'd probably fuck all my enemies. It's just not going to work." sookie said. Now more calm and resigned to accept her new reality. Pam's mouth dropped open. She was stunned. A smile curled over her mouth with a look of mirth.
"Well we can't have him fucking your enemies, now can we." Pam said as she stood up. "Give me one minute." She said as she zipped out of her office and straight down the hall and up the stairs to Erics office the overlooked the entire bar. Eric looks up from his desk, then straight back down after seeing the crazy eyes smile on his Childs face.
"Not tonight Pam." He said in an annoyed tone.
"Oh, yes tonight." She said back. Eric wasn't impressed by her attitude, threw his pen across the room and crossed his arms.
"What do you need?" He barked.
"We have a telepath problem." Pam said with glee. Eric groaned, they ALWAYS have a telepath problem it seems. Kidnappings, fairie attacks, menads, Bill Compton, bombings, her grandmother attempting to perish, Bill Compton again, elf poison, falling into other dimensions, Bill Compton AGAIN.
"It better not be Bill Compton." He said with and unnecessary deep breath.
"No, it's not. She has broken up with the Were. He committed an act if infidelity with her best friend and she is now concerned he will fuck her enemies." Pam said with a smile.
"That's Splendid, but very inconvenient. She will need to be held in a safe house until another day guard can be vetted and hired. She tends to be resistant to adapting to situations." Eric said standing up. "Where is she?" He asked.
"She's in my office ruining my suede couch with her tears." Pam replied.
Eric walked down the stairs to go speak with his telepath. He doesn't dislike having Sookie in her employ, she is just…. Difficult. There have been a few times where they have unexpected moments where he feels a softness for the girl, one could even say friendship. Her Grandmother on the other hand, he just enjoyed her company. He was happy to extend his protection to her also. In fact, sometimes he wished he could have Gran without the complicated Sookie factors. That was rare though, because he did love having a telepath. When he walked into Pams office Gran had made her way in there and was sitting next to a red and puffy, but not currently crying Sookie.
"I was informed the were has begun to fuck your enemies." Eric stated as he walked in with Pam, pushing her out of the way so he could sit in her chair.
"Give or take, I don't think friends suck your boyfriends dick in his truck, then fuck him at his apartment while you work. I think he definitely is fucking my enemies." sookie said dryly. "He's also no longer my boyfriend. I want a clean break where I never have to see him again, please."
"I can accommodate that but you will have to go to a safe house until we find you a new day guard." Eric said
"And Gran." Sookie added.
"Yes yes, and Gran. You'll have to stay there during the day. No leaving, no cruising around, no independent investigations, no small errands or running back home for just one thing." Eric said with a firm tone.
"Okay." Sookie said. This was too easy, Eric thought. She never agrees to anything easily.
"Okay?" He asked making sure he wasn't meeting his final death and hallucinating.
"Yes, Okay. Also, I need a different car. I know he has tracking on mine." Eric now had his mouth hanging open. There was no argument, no negotiation, no stubbornness. That dog had broken her and this will not do. He turned to pam and said something to her in a different language. Then said to Gran.
"Adel, my darling can you please return with Pam to your home and pack for you and Sookie for a week or two? Anything you forget I can accommodate."
"I forgot my new Kindle." Gran said with a sly look. Eric smiled and said.
"Done." Turning his attention to a very small looking Sookie who was hunched in the corner of the couch.
"You get up and come with me. You will meet your grandmother at the safe house later. We have something to go do now." Sookie looked at him with exhaustion. She wasn't really up for reading minds, but after Eric sticking his neck out to get her away from her no good, low down, cheating ex she really couldn't say no to him. Eric grabbed Sookies hand and walked her out the back door of the bar. He saw Alcide try to approach them as soon as they walked out, but Eric bared his fangs and Alcide stopped mid stride and just watched and Eric opened Sookies door and helped her sit in his very low profile car. Sookie took notice that Eric had opened her door and offered his hand to help her get in. Something her Ex had never done. As they pulled away and Alcide faded in her view from the side mirror she began to feel a bit better.
