Renesmee's POV
As I walked downstairs, I heard multiple voices coming from the kitchen. I started walking faster as I heard the telltale deep tones of Seth. Seth and his sister, Leah, were members of the Quileute wolf pack from the nearby reservation, so they knew the complete truth about me; their mom did too, she was a part of the tribe council. Charlie was the only one left mostly in the dark, only knowing the bare minimum of the story. Seth bounced around the corner to meet me.
"Little Cullen!" He yelled and opened his arms for me. I immediately leapt into them and returned his hug. He spun me around before sitting me back on my feet.
"Seth! It's so good to see you!" I grinned up at him.
"You too Renesmee! It's been too long." He ruffled my hair as we walked back into the kitchen.
As excited as I was to see grandpa, I was just as happy to see Seth. He and my dad have been friends for years, ever since they fought together against evil vampires who were trying to kill my mom. Their friendship was just the sweetest thing to me; mainly because this was really my dad's only friend outside other vampires. I thought it was so cool to see them bond over something and accept each other so kindly. Seth had been one of the first outsiders to meet me, immediately rejoicing with my parents over having me. In a way, you could call Seth another one of my uncles. His mom is married to Charlie now so they're here quite often. It makes our visits extra special. Charlie and Sue, a divorced bachelor and a widow, started dating around the time my parents married. They bonded over watching their barely adult children battle life with the supernatural.
In the kitchen, we joined Charlie, Sue-Seth's mom, and Leah-Seth's sister. Sue and Leah smiled at me tentatively and waved, speaking words of welcome. Both ladies were still just a bit wary around me, not as fully accepting of vampires as Seth was. But they were all kind enough and loved Charlie enough to keep our visits enjoyable.
"Dinner's ready, let's eat." Sue guided us all to the table. Another reason I liked Sue being around, she was an amazing cook. I'd come a long way in my appetite for human food. I still didn't love all of it, but the more protein the better. Tonight, she fixed us all steaks, baked potatoes, and salad. While the vegetables in the salad weren't my favorite, the steak had my mouth watering.
Sue passed around our plates. "Medium rare for you, right Renesmee?" She asked with a small smile.
"Yes please." I returned her politeness, grateful she was willing to cook especially for me.
As we all ate, we exchanged small talk. I updated everyone on my drive in and my stop at Newton's store, leaving out the fact that I was momentarily lost. Seth got a real kick out of the Mike story.
"Oh please let me listen later when you tell Edward this story. I can see it now." Seth cackled, then imitated my dad perfectly with his eyes closed, fingers pinching the bridge of his nose like he always did when he was pissed off.
Seth and Leah told stories about their jobs; Seth worked at a mechanic shop on the reservation while Leah worked with her mom at the hospital. Eventually the night winded down and we all gathered in the living room with Charlie while he watched a baseball game. Not long after, my cell phone rang and my dad's name popped up on the screen.
"I'll come get you before I tell the Mike story." I whispered to Seth as I stepped out onto the small front porch to take the call.
"Hi dad!" I squealed, so excited to hear his voice.
"Hello sweetheart." He greeted me.
"Hi honey!" I heard mom add from the speaker phone.
"Oh it's so good to hear your voices, I miss you already!"
"We miss you too. How was your drive?"
I was definitely not admitting my confusion to dad. Not anytime soon.
"It was great," I fibbed. "Easy peasy!"
"How is Charlie? Was he home when you got there?"
"He's great, mom! I'm sure you can say hi to him here in a few, he's watching a game right now. Sue, Seth, and Leah were here for dinner."
"Oh that sounds so fun! Yes, I'd love to say hi to him before we're done but it can wait. Have you done anything else today?" I smirked, so excited for my story. I waved at Seth through the window to join me. He rushed out the door as I started.
"Well actually on my drive in, I did run into someone." I tried to pause with each sentence to add to the suspense. "I saw a little store on my way in and I was curious so I stopped in. And wouldn't you know who was working?" Another pause, I locked eyes with Seth who muffled his mouth from bursting with laughter.
Before I could finish, my dad said "Newton," as if it were a swear.
"Yes!" I continued while fighting off giggles. "When I talked to him and mentioned I was Chief Swan's cousin, he just couldn't wait to ask about Bella. He wanted me to make sure I told her hi for him." Seth and I burst out laughing, as did my mother through the phone speaker. Dad's answering growl was exactly what I expected.
"Of course, of course. Barely in town for a few minutes and Newton finds her. He should thank all his lucky stars that I wasn't there to hear his thoughts about my daughter." He continued to mumble in such a low voice that I couldn't make out the words.
My sweet, overprotective dad. No one was luckier than me.
That's when Seth lost it. He laughed so hard he doubled over, tears running down his face.
"Seth!" Mom and dad both shouted with glee.
From there, I handed the phone over and let Seth chat with them. I watched with pride as some of my favorite people were bonding with each other. As their small talk wound down, my dad parted the call with this request.
"Seth, keep an eye on our baby girl. We're trusting you to protect her for us until we come back to get her at the end of the summer."
"Oh come on Eddie! You know I'm all over this! She's like a little sister to me, I wouldn't let anything happen to her." Seth grabbed me into a headlock while he said this. I giggled and fought to get away from him. Still laughing, I took the phone back and walked it inside to hand to Charlie so mom could say hello.
Afterwards, I said my final goodbyes to mom and dad for the night. We promised to call and talk again tomorrow night. I settled in to finish watching the game for the night, feeling such peace here in my second home.
