Reward for the Lawyer-to-Be

The Alpha and the Lawyer

Stiles frowned annoyed when the Cranberries' Zombie started blaring. Putting one of the three books he was bent over aside, he kicked one on the floor a little to the left to reveal his phone beneath. With a sigh did he put it between his hear and shoulder.

"What do you want, Zombiewolf, I am busy?"

"Hello to you too, Stiles. I just wanted to see if my present has arrived yet?"

Stiles narrowed his eyes. "Present? What present? Why?"

"Why, for passing the bar exam, of course."

Slowly, Stiles put his pencil behind his ear. "My bar exam is tomorrow."

"Minor details, darling," Peter made a dismissive noise. "So it hasn't arrived yet?"

Huffing softly to himself, Stiles sat back. "No. And don't jinx me like that."

"It's not jinxing, it's having faith in your abilities. I wouldn't be paying for your education if I didn't trust you to ace this. I need my investment to pay off, with interests."

Most of the time, it felt like he made a deal with the devil when he accepted Peter's 'scholar ship' for Stiles, to allow him to go to Harvard Law (with all of the 'Legally Blonde' jokes that Erica and Isaac could possibly cram in when the pack first heard the news).

Working with Peter for years, to keep their pack safe, seeing Peter use his evil lawyer powers for the good of their pack had intrigued Stiles so much. He'd always thought he would end up in law enforcement, like his dad, but that just wasn't him, at all. Instead, he decided to use his quick wit and silver tongue in a worthy way and Peter had been delighted to hear it, had immediately offered to help out with money, as long as Stiles would be working for him after graduation.

Now, Stiles had not been a fan art first. Accepting help, accepting money. Peter called it an investment in his own future – gaining a talented new lawyer for his firm – and he also called it an investment in the Hale Pack. Stiles remained reluctant, until Peter started referring to the tuition fee as 'peanuts' and Stiles grew annoyed enough to accept it. Stupid, filthy rich Zombiewolf.

"Just, out of curiosity, what kind of present is it?" Stiles asked after a long beat. "Food?"

Because he could seriously use some food. And it wouldn't even be the first time his pack had long-distance ordered food deliveries for him, knowing he tended to forget to eat when he was too busy studying. It was so cute when a delivery guy would knock on his dorm room with a pizza where, with sharpie, it said Don't forget to eat – Jackson. Doughnuts from Allison. Curly fries and burgers from Scott. Pack took care of each other and Stiles loved it, loved that even while he was so far away from them all, they didn't just… put him out of their mind. They kept him up to date on the Hale Pack group chat, he was never left out from any inside jokes or disasters happening.

"Not food," Peter sounded near offended. "That's for the betas to try and bribe their Pack Mom. That is… not our dynamic, darling. No, I sent you a much more practical gift."

Ominous. With Peter, that could mean anything. From books to help him in his personal research for the pack, to law books, to Peter's case files to study, meetings with professors that Peter had connections with, to straight-up body disposal sites (one very exhausting instance where a creature had attacked Stiles on campus, he'd used his Spark to take it out but was left with the body).

Knocking on the door interrupted Stiles' thoughts and conversation. Still with the phone against his shoulder did Stiles go and open the door. The phone slipped away and if not for supernatural reflexes, it would have crashed on the ground. Stiles' heart jumped into his throat.

"Derek," Stiles whispered, stunned, staring at the wolf holding his phone.

Derek smiled and handed the phone back to Stiles. "Ah, so my present finally arrived!"

Grabbing the phone, Stiles disconnected the call and threw it carelessly over his shoulder onto his bed so he could properly jump into Derek's arms, wrapping his own arms around the Alpha's neck. Derek laughed softly, grabbing him by the underside of his thighs and holding him close.

"H… How… How are you here, why are you here? Did something happen? Are the pups alright?"

"Stiles," Derek growled softly, face buried in Stiles' neck, nosing and rubbing and nibbling. "Nothing happened. Everything is alright. Everyone is alright. I'm here for you."

Peter's words caught up with him. The present arrived. Stiles groaned, hitting his forehead against Derek's shoulder. That was so Peter and so annoying because he would actually have to thank Peter.

"Peter send you," Stiles mumbled, muffled by that unfairly muscular chest.

Derek dragged his lips along the span of Stiles' neck. "Well. I wanted to come on my own. Peter is the one who provided me the plane tickets so I could be here even before your exam."

Stiles took a shaky breath, clinging a little tighter onto Derek. With graduation coming up, Stiles had skipped on his last planned trip back to Beacon Hills and he'd been sufficiently miserable about it. The distance between Massachusetts and California was killing him. He was so far away from his pack. And sure, he wasn't the only one – Lydia had left for England for college, to be closer to Jackson too, though they both planned on returning to Beacon Hills after college, Danny was at MIT, Isaac had gone to France for college. Still, every time he video-called his boyfriend and he saw Malia, Kira, Boyd, Erica and Cora around, laughing together. Even Scott hung out with them occasionally, now that Stiles wasn't there, his vet training taking place within the state at least so he could come home for the weekends to see Allison and the pack. Stiles wished he could see his pack every weekend too, instead of just on holidays or special occasions.

"Stiles, are you alright?" Derek asked softly, sounding concerned. "You're crying."

"I missed you so much," Stiles pulled his face away enough so he could kiss Derek. "I missed you so, so, so much, I can't wait to be done with school and get back home and see you every day."

He was peppering Derek's face with kisses, holding it with both hands, clinging onto Derek like he feared he'd disappear if he let go. It had been so tough, not just how hard law school and Harvard were, but being away from them all. Him and Derek had barely gotten together before Stiles had left for college, Stiles spontaneously pulling Derek into a kiss while everything had already been loaded into the Jeep for his and Scott's road trip to college. Just, kissed him, told him he loved Derek and then practically fled the state. He loved Derek and had been afraid of the Alpha's rejection so he figured the distance would make it sting less. Instead, the distance made their very new and budding relationship unnecessarily hard. Still, they lasted. With phone calls, texts and visits, they were still going strong, still so maddeningly in love.

"Peter is going to be so smug about this," Derek chuckled.

"Urgh," Stiles rolled his eyes in annoyance. "But I love you enough to endure it."

Another chuckle and this time Stiles actually looked at his mate and saw the sparkle of amusement on those beautiful hazel eyes and oh, it was so good to see them in person again after so long. Stiles pulled him into another slow, deep kiss. Also kissing, very good. Missed it a lot.

"I have to study," Stiles frowned annoyed after about twenty minutes of making out.

He also noted that he was still in Derek's arms, his legs around the Alpha's waist and Derek just… holding him up. Carrying him, not having put him down. Like Derek was clinging onto him just as badly. Stiles smiled, running his fingers through Derek's hair.

"That's why Peter sent me here today," Derek raised one eyebrow. "We all agreed that you would spent all night trying to cram more studying, which will just leave you tired in the morning for your exam. Your brain needs a break, a distraction to relax. I'm the distraction."

Catching his lower lip between his teeth, Stiles shook his head. "You all agreed?"

"Stiles, I had to fight Malia, Erica and Isaac on being the one to come here," Derek actually glared. "The only reason I didn't have to fight Scott off was because he'd had a stressful week of exams himself was too exhausted for the flight. But he sends you hugs. They all send you hugs."

With a soft humpf sound did Stiles bury his face in Derek's neck again. "Oka—ay, fine. Maybe you guys are right. Maybe there won't be much good coming from studying any more tonight."

"Maybe," Derek snorted. "I have instructions from Lydia to video-call her if you do not yield."

"Okay, okay, okay!" Stiles threw his hands up. "I surrender, don't threaten me with the big guns!"

Raising both eyebrows, Derek teasingly flexed his arms. "I thought those were the big guns."

The stupid pun made Stiles laugh so loudly and then smash their lips together in another hard kiss. Damn, he had missed this man. But yes, technically, those were the big guns, as labeled by Stiles. His hands wandered to squeeze his boyfriend's biceps. Yes, very big guns.

"How about we move this to the bed because this is not exactly that comfortable?"

"Says the one who is getting carried around," Derek snorted softly.

But he did obey, carrying Stiles over to lay him out on the bed – and then pulling three books out from under Stiles. Derek leaned over him, kissing him gently and then kissing down his neck. Sucking another hickey onto Stiles' neck, because of course he did. Derek always left trails of hickeys all over Stiles whenever they saw each other, because the possessive wolf needed to leave his mark. Which, lucky for him, thrilled Stiles. Stretching out, Stiles arched his back.

"How long?" Stiles asked when his fingers ran through Derek's hair again.

"Mh?" Derek looked up at him, blinking as he tore himself away from Stiles' hipbone.

"How long can I have you?" Stiles clarified, his eyebrows furrowed.

"A week," Derek smiled. "Malia is running the shop until I get back. We all agreed that someone should be with you to celebrate your final exams with you and also to distract you from spiraling until you'll hear that you passed."

"You all have too much faith in me," Stiles muttered with a frown.

"No," Derek growled and leaned forward to steal a proper kiss. "We have all seen what you and your mind are capable of, for years now. Why would some exam that so many people pass every year best you, if Alpha packs, Darachs, hunters and chimeras couldn't best you?"

Derek smiled against Stiles' lips, just to go back to rubbing his face against Stiles' neck. Shuddering, Stiles relaxed under the administration. Well, put like that… Yeah, true. Stiles had cracked much harder cases with much bigger consequences than this stupid exam. Peter had passed this damn exam. Stiles was not going to be outsmarted by Peter Hale, he would never live that down. Not to mention, he would hate to owe Peter even more for paying for another year. Nope. Failure was not an option, failure was not happening. He was going to pass that exam tomorrow and then he was going to get to properly celebrate with his boyfriend.

"Can we take off the pants?" Stiles yawned. "Actually, I think I'm more tired than I realized…"

Derek smiled at him in a knowing way, like he had known Stiles would be tired and just hadn't noticed. Both down to their boxers, their curled together on Stiles' bed, Derek spooning him, making him feel warm and safe and content as he succumbed to a good night's sleep.
