The Sketchbook

Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Games

To many people outside of District 6, Jessica Grimes was known as "The Female Morphling". Within District 6, Jessica was also a talented artist, and since her victory in the 35th Hunger Games, she has since did a series of sketches, each one descripting an iconic moment from each Games she has Mentored a Tribute. The sketchbook was found several years after the Mockingjay Rebellion, by Mercedes Vonheli.

35th Games: Meeting the Mentor

The name Imogen Roosa isn't as iconic as the Other Victors, due to the fact she won her games sixteen years earlier. As District 6's only post 10th Hunger Games victor eligible to Mentor, Imogen would be the Mentor of Jessica and her District Partner, Jussi Weiss.

35th Games: Jussi's Death

The Arena was in the ruins of an old Roman town, and on Day 10 of the 35th Games, while hiding in the Forum, Jussi met his end when District 2's Julius stabbed him in the back with a knife; the Careers, in the form of District 1's Rusty and Treasure, District 2's Julius and Andromeda and District 4's Oneone had been using the Forum in the ruins as their camp.

35th Games: The Showdown

On Day 17 of the Games, the Gamemakers created an earthquake to drive the remaining Tributes together. Julius, a District 5 boy named George and Jessica was the last three Tributes left. The fight between Julius and George was long and tiring, however, Julius soon overpowered George. However in the process George had caused considerable wounds to Julius, and by the time Jessica had managed to retrieve her weapon Julius was dead, having bled out on the marble steps.

35th Games: Crowning the Victor

Jessica is crowned by President Ravenstill.

35th Games: The Victory Tour

Jessica and Imogen admire the landscape of Panem en route to District 10 during the Victory Tour. Neither Tribute from District 10, Wool and Hengist, made it out of the Bloodbath alive

36th Games: The Reaping

Jessica and Imogen sits on the Reaping Stage as the Tributes of the 36th Games are Reaped.

36th Games: Mentoring

Jessica mentors the female Tribute, Eileen. Beside Eileen, her District Partner Isambard listens to his mentor. The four of them were en route to the Capitol

36th Games: The Bloodbath

Jessica and Imogen watch as the District 2 Tributes, Kris and Augustus, spear Eileen. On the ground lies Isambard. Neither District 6 Tribute made it out alive.

36th Games: Beetee's plan

The District 3 male Tribute, Beetee Latier, uses a spool of wire in his supplies to make a trap on Day 9. With just the Careers left, he wraps the spool around two trees.

36th Games: Electric ending

As the storm clouds gathered above Beetee, the District 3 male lights a fire to lure the Careers to his location. As soon as the Careers reached the wire a bolt of lightning struck the trees, electrocuting all six Careers. Jessica remembered that the boy's mentor once used a similar tactic to win several years earlier

36th Games: Beetee's Victory Tour

Six months after Eileen and Isambard are buried in District 6's graveyard, alongside Jussi Weiss, Beetee was in District 6 during his Victory Tour.

37th Hunger Games: The Capitol

Sally and Edgar, the District 6 Tributes, look in amazement at the buildings in the Capitol as they join their Mentors, Imogen and Jessica, in getting off the Tribute Train.

37th Hunger Games: Survival

Both Sally and Edgar survived the Bloodbath, however, with a small bag and a short dagger, Sally and Edgar would have to rely on hunting or the sponsors.

37th Hunger Games: The Spectre of Death

On Day 3 of the 37th Hunger Games, Edgar of District 6 finds himself ambushed by Oliver of District 2. Within several sword slashes, Edgar was dead. Sally, the female Tribute from District 6, had her supplies stolen by Oliver's District Partner, a girl named Persephone. The conversation after Edgar's death was that Persephone decided to spare Sally as the girl was on the brink of death anyway. Persephone was correct. As soon as the Capitol Anthem ended, announcing two Tributes that died that day: Edgar and the girl from District 9, Angelica Carmichael, Sally perished.

37th Hunger Games: The Final Fight

All the Mentors are in the Mentors' Control Room as the Final Fight takes place between District 3's Elon and District 2's Oliver. Betee Latier and Huyen Le Duc, the District 3 Victors, watch nervously around the larger screen. Oliver returned as Victor, after a well placed stab wound resulted in Elon bleeding out.

38th Hunger Games: The Tributes

Imogen and Jessica are introduced to their new Tributes, Alana and Neil, who will be representing District 6 during the 38th Hunger Games

38th Hunger Games: The Bloodbath

The Arena that year was a palace, inspired by an ancient palace named Hampton Court. The Tributes looked amazed at the paintings and statues around them. Luckily for Imogen and Jessica, both Alana and Neil made it out of the Bloodbath alive.

38th Hunger Games: The Maze

Neil and Alana, along with their ally Porter Tripp, find themselves at the centre of the maze as the sky darken around them. All three Tributes made it out of the maze once the Careers walked by

38th Hunger Games: The Ghosts

On Day Eight, Neil, Porter and Alana walked through the corridor of the Palace when they saw a Ghost. The Ghost turned out to be an Executioner Mutt, and Neil told Porter and Alana to flee. Neil would end up dead by the Mutt when the Mutt swung his axe at Neil's neck. He would be placed fifth.

38th Hunger Games: The Final Battle

Porter gasps as Leda, the District 2 Female, strangles Alana. Porter, after a long and difficult fight (which resulted in a broken neck), overpowers her opponent.

Flicking through the book, Mercedes landed on the 41st Hunger Games page. For District 6, the 41st Hunger Games was known as "Tangie's Tricks".

41st Hunger Games: The Tributes

Gear Robinson, Mentoring for the first time after his victory in the 40th Hunger Games, meets his Tribute, Cooper. Next to him, Imogen shakes hands with her Tribute, Tangmere Wilson.

41st Hunger Games: The Training Scores

The District 6 team gasps in shock as the Training Scores are revealed. Cooper gained an "8", while Tangmere gained a "9". The two Tributes gives a high-five to each other.

41st Hunger Games: Planting Traps

Following their escape from the Bloodbath, Cooper watches his District Partner plant a trap. It was thanks to the traps Tangmere planted that District 6 came close to getting a back-to-back victories.

41st Hunger Games: A cruel end

Jade, the District 1 Female, fires an arrow into Tangmere's chest as the two females fight it out in the Final Two. It was a cruel end to one of the most promising Tributes of the past. For Samson Wilson, it was the sixth time one of his relatives died in the Arena, following his older brother, younger brother, sister, nephew and cousins, and he hoped Tangmere's younger sister, Kensey, doesn't get Reaped.

Continuing even further, Mercedes paused at the pages covering the 50th Hunger Games.

50th Hunger Games: Double The Tributes.

Jessica, Imogen and Gear Robinson sit on the stage as the Tributes for the 50th Hunger Games are Reaped. The Twist this year was that double the number of Tributes would be Reaped. For District 6, the unfortunate Tributes that year were named Renee Lightoller, Valentina Wright, Stuart Markham and John Hobbs.

50th Hunger Games: The Competition

Imogen, having opted to mentor Renee and John, watches the rest of the Reapings. Two of the Tributes from District 1, Jet Rickards II and Emerald Rickards, were cousins, which reminded Jessica of the District 3 Tributes from the 27th Hunger Games. District 2 had their formidable Tributes, with Gemma Lavene being the most formidable. District 7 had a lumberjill, named Michelle, who was proficent with axes compared to her District Partners, Leif, Bark and Petal. A pair of twins, Fern and Saffron, was Reaped for District 8. District 12 had a pair of stand outs in Haymitch Abernathy and Maysilee Donner. Haymitch, as well as the younger boy and girl, Tostig Wilkes and Flare Mulholland, had the Seam look.

50th Hunger Games: The Mentoring

Imogen looks in fear as Jet spears Renee. Nearby, Canute, the District 4 male, stabs Valentina. Petal, the youngest of the District 7 females, lay dead, so does Flare. Haymitch and Maysilee flee in the distance, while Tostig grabs a small bag. Stuart is fighting against Gemma in a battle that would cost the boy from 6 his life. He, Valentina and Renee would be amongst the eighteen Tributes that died in the Bloodbath

50th Hunger Games: Poisoned

The Arena, although beautiful, was deadly. John Hobbs, having picked some of the innocent looking pears from a tree, lays slumped by the lake.

50th Hunger Games: The volcano

On the fourth day of the Games, the mountain erupted, causing the deaths of twelve Tributes, amongst them, Canute of District 4, Michelle of District 7 and Tostig of District 12. Tostig's death was horrific, and is considered, decades later, the most graphic death in the Games. Only Steak Cantwell's death in the 69th Hunger Games would be close.

50th Hunger Games: The Pink Birds

A pink bird stabs Maysilee in the throat, as Haymitch kneels beside her. Jessica remembered that her aunt once told her this was what District 12 Tributes usually do, comfort their District Partner or ally in their last moments. Jessica was unsure if any of the District 12 Tributes comforted their allies or partners in the first ten Games, but her aunt also believed a Tribute in the Fourth Hunger Games may have comforted his ally, however, those Games have never been re-aired on television in the years since, but it is likely a District 12 Tribute is involved.

50th Hunger Games: The Final Battle

Haymitch, his guts hanging out from a wound, dodges an axe thrown by Emerald Rickards, the District 1 girl; Emerald has blood running down her face, the result of Haymitch stabbing her in the eye. Of course, the axe bounced back towards Emerald, killing her and giving District 12 only their second Victor after forty years, with 81 dead Tributes in total.

Flicking through, Mercedes stopped on the page of the 68th Hunger Games

68th Hunger Games: Training

Jessica and Gear chat with their Tributes, Locomotova Weiss and Nigel Vonheli, on the first day of Training. In the background, an Avox is passing a note to the mentor of the District 3 girl for said Mentor to work on a Capitolite's Man Cave.

68th Hunger Games: The Mentor Room

Jessica and Gear sits at their Console as the timer counts down to the start. Over at the District 3 console, Wiress Plummer looks in shock at the scene in front of her. Beside Wiress, Skarloey Rowe, a late replacement after Beetee Latier, the original mentor for the District 3 girl, was called up to work on a Man Cave, has his hands by his mouth.

68th Hunger Games: Peaceful

Nigel Vonheli and Locomotova Weiss, the District 6 Tributes, watch the snow fall down. The Arena that year was a frozen wasteland. By the end of Day 1, seventeen Tributes would lie dead on the snowy ground. Nigel would be amongst them. Locomotova would die by dawn on Day 2.

68th Hunger Games: Against the odds

Skarloey Rowe looks at the board, recording that the Tribute he co-Mentored, Ada Burns, is the Victor. Despite having the odds stacked against her, Ada won by simply surviving the harsh conditions. Relying on a stategy inspired by how long-lost peoples in the Arctic survived, she didn't involve herself into fighting the other Tributes, becoming one of the few Victors that never killed anyone during their Games. Dressed in pelts from what she hunted, Ada is carried onto the Hovercraft. These Games would mark the last time Skarloey would mentor a Tribute, as Beetee would end up suceeding him as a District 3 Mentor. Indeed, him stepping back meant that all three of District 3's original Mentors have now retired from Mentoring duties; older brother Rheneas quit Mentoring after the 52nd Hunger Games, after District 1's Crystal speared his Tribute to death, while Huyen stood down after the 53rd Hunger Games.

69th Hunger Games: Neil and Silvia

Jessica and Gear chat with their Tributes on the Train.

69th Hunger Games: The desert

The Arena for the 69th Hunger Games was a desert. Both Neil and Silvia survived the Bloodbath, however, for the survivors, things would go from bad to worse

69th Hunger Games: Hellish conditions

As the temperatures increased, the few patches of surface water began to dry. This would result in the ironically named Steak Cantwell being charred to death, the District 10 boy's death so horrific that in subsquent re-airings, it was edited.

69th Hunger Games: Kindness

Shortly after Steak's death, Neil gives two bottles of water to the District 5 Tributes, Andrea and Tydal. The bottles of water was enough to sustain the two District 5 Tributes, but it would be useless when the poisonous snake mutts bit them to death. This action, as well as comforting District 12's Jessie in her last moments, made Neil one of the most memorable Tributes in the Hunger Games, to the point he was called "The kindest Tribute in the Games"

69th Hunger Games: Death

As the heat increased, even the water inside the bottles began to evaporate. On Day 8 of the 69th Hunger Games, Neil and Silvia perished through dehydration.

69th Hunger Games: The Victor

Aphrodite Bordeaux stands in the middle of the Arena. A member of the Career Pack, the Career Pack fell apart on Day 12. Platinum, her District Partner, died later that day through dehydration, while the District 2 Tributes, Bertha Shields and Achilles Martinez, lost their lives to a scorpion on Day 17. Sandy and Dylan died of heatstroke on Day 14. Aphrodite had to spend a week before the Victor Interview in recovery due to how dehydrated she was. As it was later said, a day longer and it would have been twenty-four dead Tributes. Indeed, the scorpion sent in on Day 16 was all that was needed for her to snatch total victory.

70th Hunger Games: Bentley and Fiona

Jessica and Gear watches the Reaping Recaps with Bentley and Fiona, the District 6 Tributes. The standouts that year was a boy from District 1 named Ivan, the District 2 Tributes Bellona and Remus, Annie and Pool from District 4 and Erling of District 5.

70th Hunger Games: The moment that changed everything

Several days after the Bloodbath, which saw half the field dead including Socket of District 3 and Helia of District 5, the surviving Tributes hid. Erling of District 5, temporarily allied with Clemont of District 3, is out hunting. Bentley and Fiona are close together. Then came the moment that would change District 4's Annie Cresta. As she and Pool was by the stream, Remus of District 2 placed his sword to Pool's neck. Annie looked up to see Remus, in a single flourish, remove Pool's head from his body. Annie shuddered at what she had witnessed and fled into hiding

70th Hunger Games: The Flood

The dam burst, flooding the Arena and killing Bentley, Fiona, Clemont and Erling.

70th Hunger Games: The Swimmer

Annie Cresta drowns Remus during the flood. A strong swimmer, she won simply by being the last Tribute standing.

71st Hunger Games: Brunel Vonheli

A month shy of his 19th Birthday, Brunel Vonheli can claim to be one of the unluckiest Tributes in Hunger Games history when he was Reaped. Having lost his older brother in the 68th, he knew his odds were against him.

Flicking forward, Mercedes looked at the page that marked the end of the 71st Hunger Games

71st Hunger Games: The oldest to die

Brunel lies on the ground of the pine forest, an axe in his chest, as Johanna Mason climbs aboard the Hovercraft. Aged 19 Years and 2 Days old at time of death, Brunel Vonheli would become the only 19-year-old Tribute to ever participate in any standard Hunger Games.

Flicking to the 73rd, she stopped at a random page

73rd Hunger Games: The Bloodbath

Mars Caesar of District 2 spears the girl from District 9, Demetria, as Van Hobbs and Harriet Ismay flee. Sometime later, they ally with Ruth Scott of District 7 and Anna of District 9, with Van and Harriet acting as older siblings to the two younger Tributes.

73rd Hunger Games: Harriet's death

Anna sobs as Harriet is speared by a javelin. The tiny District 9 boy saw Harriet as an older sister, with Van promising he won't let anyone hurt them. Anna would be dead two days later, when while out hunting, he is shot in the back by Mars.

73rd Hunger Games: Sacrifice

Van Hobbs of District 6 pushes his ally, Ruth Scott of District 7, down a chute as the building collapses around him. Van would become the last Tribute to be directly killed by Gamemakers. Sadly, Ruth would join Van less than five minutes later in death after being torn apart by a flock of Pigeon Mutts.

74th Hunger Games: The Final Reapings

Stanier Vonheli shakes hands with Penelope Roosa as both are Reaped for the 74th Hunger Games.

74th Hunger Games: The moment that changed everything

A girl from District 12, Katniss Everdeen, Volunteers in place of her younger sister Prim.

Flicking a bit forward, Mercedes stopped at a page she remembered seeing as a child.

74th Hunger Games: District 6's Heroes

Stanier Vonheli attempts to fight Glimmer St Laurent as Marvel Angloueme spears Penelope Roosa. After Glimmer cries for Cato Harris, Stanier was stabbed to death before being gutted. Both Tributes would become one of the eleven killed in the Bloodbath.

Turning to the final page of the Sketchbook, Mercedes stared at the picture.

Panem's future

A Mockingjay, covered in gold leaf, flies over the Panem landscape as citizens, both District and Capitol, look up together. The piece was the last piece drawn by Jessica Grimes prior to her death in the 75th Hunger Games. Although she never lived to see the establishment of the new Republic, the piece symbolises hope that future generations won't have the threat of the Hunger Games over them. It also symbolises the borders between Districts and the Capitol being gone, something that would happen after the Rebellion.

Shutting the sketchbook, Mercedes placed the book in her bag. Going out of Jessica's old home in Victors' Village, she headed towards the Capitol, where a new museum was under construction. A museum that will tell the full story of The Hunger Games, she thought.

A better world for all, Jessica had written at the back of the book.

The End

I wrote this story over a year ago, but I managed to retrieve it after an accident involving a laptop, a cup of tea and a tabby cat. Yes, the Female Morphling is named "Jessica" in my headcanon. Yes, there is a reference to Beyond The Pale in here as well. Imogen was one of the first Victors I created. "Tangie" was briefly mentioned in Beyond The Pale as a Tribute whose end was similar to Harold Hennessey's. I wrote this before Sunrise on The Reaping was announced. Anna of District 9 is male. Brunel's luck when it came to his Reaping will be explained in the second volume of the Vonheli Trilogy, but long story short was due to an adminstrative error.
