DenSey: Part of Your World

Michelle swam closer to the ship, wanting to see the humans on board. It was only when she was right next to it that she realised that it would be impossible to see them, unless one was looking over the railing at the top.

Which was exactly what happened. A man came closer, looking out over the water. Michelle hid in the shadows, examining the man.

He was handsome, with spiky blond hair. She couldn't see his eyes, but she imagined that they would be a beautiful colour. Perhaps the colour of the sky.

She stared at him for a long time, not even noticing as the wind picked up or the sky grow darker. It was only when she heard a foreign boom did she realise that something was wrong. She jumped in shock and dove underwater.

Mathias heard the splash, and he turned his attention to where he thought he heard it, but he could see nothing out of the ordinary, except for the rippling water. But they had bigger problems to worry about.

A storm was brewing.

Michelle watched the ship from beneath the surface. She could feel the current growing stronger, and she knew that if she swam closer to the surface, the strong waves could hurt her. So she kept watch over the ship.

She saw it moving erratically, before it collided with rocks that were hidden beneath the surface. She hesitantly followed, eventually seeing humans falling into the water.

Including the one she had been watching.

Her eyes widened, and she hesitated for just a moment before she swam after him. She didn't care if she would get in trouble. She needed to save this human.

Mathias groaned when he opened his eyes. He remembered the storm, but he was lying on warm sand, so he must have washed ashore.

At first it was just a blur, but then his vision sharpened and he found a beautiful girl leaning over him. Okay, perhaps he died and went to heaven. Mathias stared as she leaned closer, and he almost thought that she was going to kiss him, but she stopped a distance away.

Wanting to see if this was real, Mathias reached out a hand, intending to stroke her cheek. However, she seemed startled by the movement and jerked away.

Mathias sat up, calling for her to stop, but then he noticed that she was swimming away, and that she had a blue tail. Mathias's eyes widened when he realised that he had met a mermaid.

Michelle hid behind a rock near the shore, watching as the man eventually left. She had been right. His eyes were the colour of the sky.

Matthias sat on the peer a few months later, watching the waves. The people of the island he had landed on were sympathetic towards him, and soon enough he had become a part of them.

But he still longed to see the mermaid again. He wanted to know more about her. And he wanted to thank her for saving his life.

He heard a splash and turned to the side. He saw familiar brown eyes framed by brown hair, and the owner was watching him intently.

He smiled.

Seychelles is probably the first nation I think of when it comes to mermaids, and Denmark was of course the home of Hans Christen Andersen, who wrote The Little Mermaid. So this was ideal for them. There are also a few Little Mermaid references, namely the title of the chapter and the way they met.
