Chapter 60: Race For S-Class!

Year: X758. 26 years till Canon begins.

Cade POV:

I sprinted across the pathway that led deep into the forest of Tenro Island. Thick trees covered me to my left and right and many of them blocked out the sunlight, meaning it was somewhat dark in here despite the sun shining outside.

The beach and Master Makarov were far behind me now. I had only been running for a few minutes now, but I was going as fast as I could.

As I was running, I thought I heard someone from behind me. I turned my head to the right slightly and saw a begrudging sight.

"Good running." Frag complimented me, as he made it to my level. "I can see that you've been practicing some running over the years. Perhaps all the running from the Rune Knights has helped with that." Frag smirked as he began to overtake me.

'Not good! If I lose sight of him then my chances of losing the first part of the trial will be completely ruined!' I realised with annoyance.

"Out of my way! Ice Beam!" I yelled as I fired a beam of ice at Frag while I could still see him ahead of me.

One thing I had to be careful of was making sure to conserve my magic. I didn't want to run out and be tired during the second part of the trial. My Ice Magic should suffice for this race. I should only need it to disrupt the others.

Frag turned his head in surprise just as the beam of ice hit his back and sent him crashing into the ground beneath him.

I then overtook Frag with little difficulty. "See ya Frag. I'll make sure to bring you on an S-Class quest sometime!" I said as I ran round a corner.

As I kept running I could see more and more of the forest open up to me. The sky was still covered by trees, and the path was still thankfully visible.

From want I remember reading on Tenro Island in that book. There were several different areas of the island. There was the forest, some open fields, the rocky cliffs and maybe some other areas. For now I was still in the forest, so I still had a lot of ground to cover.

I was looking left and right to try and see if I could see Frag or Scarlet trying to attack me from my sides. I couldn't see anyone which made me a bit on edge. I also had to consider the hostile wildlife that was on this island.

It was then I thought I heard a sort of quick padding sound from behind me. I spun around and saw a most interesting sight.

It was Scarlet! Except she was riding a Rollidillo, which was a massive, strong, quadrupedal reptilian creature with a large mouth full of sharp teeth. It's body is covered in very hard scales, and whenever it gets serious, it curls it up and rolls over enemies.

'W-What? How is she-?' I began to think.

"Looks like you are stuck running yourself." Scarlet proclaimed as she came up to my side. "I thought that I would never catch up to you and Frag, but then this creature here came up to me and started to fight me. When I beat him, he seemed to bow down to me and allowed me to hop on its back. I jumped on and here I am now!"

I saw that the Rollidillo was a little red in embarrassment. Yet it seemed like it was enjoying what was happening?

"Ah! That must be cheating of some sort!" I pointed at Scarlet with some frustration, as I was now struggling to keep up with her.

"Master said nothing about riding the creatures." Scarlet said smartly. "Well, I'll see you at the finish line then! Bye Cade!" She laughed as she had the reptile go faster to lose me.

"Oh no you don't! Ice Bullets!" I sent a flurry of ice bullets that shot towards Scarlet, but she was able to use her magic to block the attack.

"Be seeing you!" She said as she made her way through the trees, her waving a hand at me as she rode away.

'Dammit! How do I catch up to her now? She'll be way faster than me now while she's riding that creature!' I grunted as I looked around for some way to help me here, but I was doubting I would find much.

But it was literally as I was thinking that, I saw a curious sight. My eyes just caught a creature stuck under a huge thick tree that had fallen over. It was a juvenile Doscadin. One of the most dangerous creatures on the island here.

The adults scaled as an enormous, carnivorous dinosaur-like creature covered in scales and walking on its rear legs, with its forelegs being smaller in comparison. It possesses a prominent, dark round section topping the upper front part of its head, which it uses to headbutt prey to eat, something which it's proud of. As this was a juvenile it was quite smaller than an adult.

It was also the natural predator and rival of sorts for the Rollidillo. Now that got me an idea. A dangerous one, but I might need all the help I can get here.

I changed direction and ran to the trapped creature. It gave a somewhat scared look when I made it to him. "Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you." I assured the creature as I held up my hands.

It seemed to relax a bit after I said that. I suppose he was in a vulnerable position, meaning he was potentially prey for anything on this island.

"You saw that Rollidillo just then, right?" I said to the Doscadin. The creature narrowed its eyes and snarled under its breath. "Yeah I feel the same buddy."

Can't believe this is how I'm going to win the trial, but here we are I guess.

"I'd be happy to let you out of this tree if you go and attack that Rollidillo. Just try to not harm the person on it too much, is that ok?" I said to the creature. "Also… don't eat me…"

The dino gave a nod of its head and the normal rage that it showed in its eyes disappeared and was replaced by a more gentle, yet still fiery look.

I moved back a bit and entered my Requip storage and pulled out one of my old enchanted swords and casted a spell to destroy the tree that was trapping the Doscadin.

"Lightning Strike!" I cried as the Kaminari sword sent forth a jet of lightning that destroyed the tree that was holding the dino to the ground.

I smirked and put my sword back in my Requip storage before looking back to the Doscadin. It had now stood back up and was looking down at me with a calmed look. Thank god he didn't want to eat me. The creature bowed his head to me as a sign of thanks.

I rubbed its head. "There you go. Now head on and take care of that Rollidillo!" I said with determination. I was surprised however to see that the dino had bent down even lower. "Wait… do you want me to get on your back?" I said with surprise and a bit of eagerness.

The dino gave a soft hum under its breath.

My eyes widened with excitement. This was good. But then an even more interesting and entertaining thought entered my mind.

"Alright I'll hop on. Just let me see if I can… buff you up a little bit." I grinned as I head out a hand to the Doscadin. What could go wrong?

"WHOA! That was close… nearly got myself hit by that tree there!" I said as the Doscadin leapt up off the ground and into the air.

Important note to self: I can indeed use my enchantments on creatures.

When I used my Soft and Soar enchantments on the dino, he seemed excited and could hardly wait to go after the Rollidillo. As soon as I hopped on his back and held onto his neck, he immediately took off using his nose to track where Rollidillo was.

He was leaping up and through the trees with little effort – my head taking some searches here and there, but nothing major. We had only been going for a few minutes now and it looked like we were coming out on a clearing.

"Ok! Ok! Let's try to stay on the ground from now on, ok?" I said with fear as I patted the dinos head. Thankfully, he seemed to listen as he didn't start jumping to see what the forest roof looked like for the dozenth time.

We then burst out onto a clearing that had a few fields in the area. The grass was coloured yellow and green, with some lovely fields of flowers. A few small rocks were scattered here and there, and it created a lovely atmosphere for the island. I could still see the path that we had had to follow to get to the next part of the trial.

More importantly, I could see Scarlet not to far away from where I was. Upon seeing the Rollidillo she was riding, the Doscadin immediately sprinted to where she was, with me barely being able to hold on. Scarlet must have heard the huge creature coming from behind here, as she turned around and seemed terrified at the sight coming her way.

She tried to cast a spell to stop me and the Doscadin, but she was a little too late. The dino crashed into the Rollidillo she was riding, with Scarlet being flung off its back. Due to the impact, I was also flung off the Doscadin – me landing on Scarlet who was lying on the soft grass.

I was able to see both creatures run off back into the trees. Seems I wouldn't be getting any help from the dino any more. Oh well, at least he had some fun with my enchantments.

Me and Scarlet were on the ground and were groaning due to the impact that we felt. If I had Requiped into my armour then I would have probably been fine! I was able to stand up and shake my head a little to clear my vision a bit.

Scarlet was groaning in pain on the ground. I think she might have gotten it worse between us, due to me crashing into her. As I looked around to find the path again, I saw a worrying sight.

A few meters away from me was the path, but I saw Frag running along it! How had he made that much distance in such little time? The path seemed to move over some small hills and disappeared over them. Frag then turned back to see the both of us before he gave a wave of his hand with a grin on his face, before he disappeared over the hills.

I gave a grunt of anger before I began to run after him. That was before I then felt something grab my leg and cause me to fall over again.

I looked behind in confusion and saw Scarlet holding onto my leg her face with anger.

"Oh no you don't!" She grunted.

"Argh, let go of me! Frag is getting away!" I pleaded as I tried to kick her away with my other leg. This was ineffective unfortunately, so magic had to save the day here.

"Get lost! Ice Bullets!" I cried as I sent some bullets of ice to Scarlet which caused her to let go of my leg. I made sure to quickly scramble away from her and get back into my own feet. I was about to sprint after Frag to catch up to him, before I heard a cry from behind me.

"Glitter Spheres!" I quickly turned and saw a few spheres of pink and yellow glitter fly towards me. I was just able to dart to the side to avoid them.

Scarlet was standing up with a serious look on her face. "I'm not letting you to that easily Cade." She remarked.

'I can't go after Frag with Scarlet firing spells at my back. I'll have to take care of Scarlet. And I'll have it be quick about it as well.'

"This is where your time in the race comes to an end." Scarlet stated.

There was a brief moment of silence between us. It was then that we acted.

"Ice Slicer!" I cried.

"Glitter Whips!" Scarlet shouted.

Both of our spells were casted at the same time. Scarlet was able to jump out of the way of my slices of ice, but my left arm was caught on her whip.

I have a grunt as I tried to break it off, but it only got tighter.

"How do you like that?" Scarlet smirked. "My Glitter Whips are made to be secure and durable. If you try to use magic to break it off, it will instead only make the whip much more intense and tighter."

'She might be right about that. This whip of hers is quite strong.' I thought as I tried pulling it some more.

"With that whip around you, your chances of evading my attacks are near zero!" Scarlet grinned as she prepared to fire off more attacks at me.

"Glitter Rays!" She cried out. This summoned several days of glitter that were sent towards me. I tried to leap to the side and dodge them, but Scarlet grabbed the whip with her hands and pulled it back. This caused me to hit her attacks, with them striking my chest.

I felt some pain go through my chest, before I stood up straight again. I noticed a key detail when Scarlet pulled me back there. She had to use both her hands to do that, meaning she still had to account for my weight. That gave me an idea.

'Soft! Soar!' I casted the defensive magic with it running across my body. I then smirked and grabbed the whip with my right hand and crouched down before leaping up into the air as much as I could, while also pulling the whip upwards.

I looked down and saw that Scarlet was surprised to see me do this, before she realised what was going to happen to her. She was pulled up into the air by me with her flailing her arms about in shock.

While I was still airborne, I tightened my grip on the whip before swinging it to my left, sending Scarlet, and later me, back to the ground below. Due to my Soft spell however, I was able to land on my feet. Scarlet was not so lucky and was sent crashing into the ground.

We both got up with Scarlet giving me an evil eye as she stood up straight. She then caused the whip around us to dissipate. I gave a smirk as she did so. "Clever girl. Had you kept that up, you would have been thrown around even more."

"I don't need my whips to beat you, Glitter Bullets!" Scarlet proclaimed as she fired off dozens of small pink glitter bullets towards me.

I stood my ground as I summoned a thick wall of ice to block her bullets. I then used my magic to send the wall of ice forwards towards Scarlet, forcing her to dodge out of the way by leaping to the side.

"Go, Five-Layered Iceflake!" I shouted as I fried off five shards of ice towards Scarlet to keep up my momentum. Scarlet done a backflip to dodge the shards of ice, with them flying right under her.

"Hmph, not bad." I admitted. "You could have maybe been a good acrobat had you not become a wizard."

Scarlet brushed her back when she stood back up. "I won't be going any easier on you due to that compliment there – but thanks anyway." She spoke.

"Ice Pillars!" I cried, summoning several pillars of ice from the ground that surrounded Scarlet, forming a prison of sorts. She looked quizzed by my action there, but I quickly used my follow up move. "Six-Layered Iceflake!"

Suddenly, six sharp shards of ice came falling from the sky down towards Scarlet. She gave a look of surprise when she saw this coming down to her.

"Glitter Bomb!" Scarlet summoned a small pink orb that she threw up into the air as my ice was coming down to her. This caused a small enough explosion to destroy my ice and the beams that were trapping her.

When the smoke dissipated and I could see clearly again, Scarlet was gone from my sight. I looked around to find her, before I saw that she had leapt up into the air and was charging up a spell.

"Stay down after this attack! Glittering Ray of Light!" She shouted with determination.

Scarlet fired off a beam of pink yellowish energy from her hands that was sent flying down towards me. I could tell from the amount of magic from the attack, that this was quite powerful. I narrowed my eyes and adjusted my feet.

"Sorry to disappoint you, but I'll be moving on it this race. I've had fun Scarlet perhaps we can do this again sometime." I chuckled, before powering up my magic. "Ice Buster!"

I held out my hands and casted a spell that completely destroyed Scarlet's ray attack. When this happened, several bits of glitter was sent flying across the air and rained down on us – like snow in a way. Scarlet was taken aback by my move there.

I did not waste time in finishing this little skirmish however. While my enchantments were still active I jumped up towards Scarlet and finished her off. "This is the finisher, Ice Fist!"

My fist became covered in ice, and I punched Scarlet right in the chest sending her crashing back down to the ground with her causing a small trench to form when she was sent. When I landed back on the ground I saw that she was struggling to get back up.

"Nice fight there." I said with smile. "See ya later Scarlet!" I waved goodbye to her as I ran back up the hills to catch up with Frag, while also making sure to get back on the path.

I had taken care of Scarlet relatively well, now only Frag remained in my way for this first section. He had gained quite a bit of distance, and I was hoping to catch back up relatively quickly.

It had been a few minutes since my fight with Scarlet back there and I had been running across the path for a good while now across the many hills that were around this part of the island. Just as I reached the top of one hill, I always saw Frag running down the next one that was ahead of me.

There were no animals here that I could ride on to try to catch up to him. The fields seemed almost barren of all wildlife, say for the occasional birds in the sky.

To my left, the very large Tenro Tree was standing firm and tall, it shooting up into the sky. It was almost looming over me and was blocking off all sunlight from underneath it. I was just away from it, so I still had daylight to see much more clearly.

It was as I was focusing my eyes ahead of me, I saw something that could maybe an advantage for me. I saw that we were coming up on the part of the island that was made up of large, jagged rocks that covered the shore. This was close to the shore, so there was sand below the rocks. The path seemed to go downwards and follow straight through the sharp rocks.

As I was coming up to the rocks, a very genus and also possibly dangerous caught my mind. I could just leap and bounce over the rocks, while also still trying to follow the path. It was smart as I could avoid moving between the rocks, but I could also risk falling and crashing down on them.

The way I saw it, Frag would be slowed down here a bit, while I could bounce and move over them and pass Frag in the race. Just had to make sure I wouldn't lose the path while doing this.

As I came up to the part of the path that moved downwards, I made sure to recast Soft and Soar to make sure that they didn't wear off while I was doing this. Right when the path moved downwards, I jumped up into the air as high as I could.

I had aimed myself towards the closest rock off the ground. I wouldn't get that much time to sit and relax after I landed though, I would have to jump almost immediately to not risk losing balance and fall off the rock. That would be sore and embarrassing.

When my feet touched down on the rock, I immediately jumped up into the air again and flew towards the next rock. Upon landing I did the same with the next rock. This was looking to be an efficient way to make it past this part of the island.

However, as I was about to jump from the rock I was currently on, I heard a cry from below me.

"What do you think you're doing Cade?" Came the voice of Frag.

I looked down and saw that he was standing with his arms on his side, a look of surprise on his face.

"Me? I'm just taking a shortcut." I said before I moved to jump off the rock I was on.

"And because of that, you'll overtake me!" Frag shouted. "I'm not going to let that happen, Glass Slices!"

Frag sent a few disks of glass from his hands outwards. At first I thought he was sending them forwards me, but I quickly saw them fly towards the rock I had leapt towards. The large rock was cut up into pieces and fell down to the ground. That meant that also was forced to land on the ground.

When I touched down on the sand I saw that Frag was standing to my side, him grinning.

"You're not going to let me past are you?" I raised an eyebrow, as I turned to face the man.

"That's right. It'd be annoying to have you on my backside for the rest of this race." Frag explained, as I felt him then power up his magic.

I narrowed my eyes and got ready for a fight. True, having someone on your backside during a race would be quite a hindrance when trying to finish first. Defeating Frag here would be me ensuring my victory for the rest of this race.

"I'll be making it past these rocks here! Ice Slicer!" I cried as I sent multiple slices of ice towards Frag.

Frag grinned as he darted to the side and fried off his own attack. "Glass Fists!"

This sent various fists made out of glass to be sent towards me at rocket speed. I countered by using one of my enchantment spells.

"I'll slash those fists to yours to pieces, Delirium's Blades!" I shouted as I summoned the enchanted swords and fired them off towards the fists.

My swords were able to slice right through Frag's Glass Fists, and they continued their journey to Frag. Frag gave a grunt when he saw this and prepared a counter spell.

"Glass Arrows!" He cried as he fired off several arrows of glass that came down from the sky and hit my swords. Many of the swords were knocked out of the sky by the arrows, while some were able to make it through to Frag.

Frag had to quickly made a thick wall of glass that could withstand the swords. They hit the wall he made just in the nick of time and Frag was pushed back a little due to the impact, him falling down on his knees.

I chose to act upon this struggle of his, and leapt forwards towards Frag while charging up my magic. I pulled back my fist and fired of a spell. "Ice Fist!"

Right as I was about to hit Frag in the chest, he suddenly launched an attack at me. "Glass Crashback!" I was a bit surprised that he was able to fire off an attack at me there.

His attack connected with my chest and sent me flying backwards somewhat. I was able to slow myself down by grabbing the sand on the ground with my hand to slow my momentum. When I stopped, I jumped up into the air – my enchantments still active and fired off another spell.

"Ice Beams!" I was able to summon several beams of ice that flew towards Frag. He counted this with the same sort of spell as mine that being some glass beams that he summoned.

Our attacks blew each other up causing some smoke to be formed in the air. I landed on the ground and brought out my Kūki sword and used the air in it to blow away the smoke so I could see more clearly.

As I did so I was just able to see a blast of glass fly towards me. I quickly jumped to the side and dodged the attack, before turning back to face Frag. I sent my sword back into my Requip storage and prepared a spell to take Frag by surprise.

"Five-Layered Iceflake!" I shouted as I fired off the shards of ice towards Frag. As they flew towards him, he made moves to dodge out of the way by leaping to the side.

"I'm not giving up yet!" Frag shouted to me. "Eat this, Glass Shatterback!"

Frag held out his hand and fired off several shards of glass that flew towards me at fast speeds. I scowled and created a wall of ice to shined me from the shards. When I did so and dissolved the wall I saw that Frag was gone from my sight.

I scanned the area we were in to try and find him, but I could not see him. 'Where did he go? There's a few places he could hide which annoys me.' I thought as my gaze drifted to the giant rock formations.

As my eyes darted to the various rocks, I thought I heard a sound from behind me. I quickly turned and saw some shards of glass flying towards me.

My eyes widened with surprise as I quickly made moves to blow them out of the air with my own magic. Upon doing so, I saw that more shards were coming from my right side as well!

'This is-!' I realised as I blew up more of the shards with my magic as they came towards me. 'Frag is using his Glass Shatterback spell to try and overwhelm me! He must be hiding in the rocks and is waiting until I get exhausted.'

My eyes were now quickly skimming the rocks to try and find Frag, all the while I was also trying to block more of his glass attacks.

It was as I stopped the next set of glass shards from reaching me that I noticed something in the sand. A small glimmer that had the sun reflect off it.

When I got a chance a few seconds later, I quickly moved over to glance down at what it was. What I saw was a decently sized shard of glass that was sticking out if the sand – that must have came from one of Frag's attacks earlier.

As I looked into it and saw my reflection, I saw a blur move above me quite quickly. I then caught onto what it was.

'That was-!' I realised before I quickly turned myself behind and fired off a spell.

"Disappear!" I yelled and caused a large explosion to occur at the formation of rocks from behind me. As the rocks fell down to the ground below I saw Frag fall to the ground along with them. I smirked at figuring out his plan there.

Frag got back up and dusted himself off, he had a few scuffle marks due to the fall there. "How'd you figure out I was on top of the rocks there and not still down here with you?" He questioned with interest.

"It was when I saw the reflection of you from above me using that shard of glass there." I pointed to the shard in the sand that I used. "The whole time I thought that you were hiding down here and using the rocks for cover. I didn't know that you were able to cast your spells that far away."

Frag shrugged. "Well I had to train somehow during these few days. It seemed like it was worth it for those few seconds there."

"Yet I still saw through it. If that was all you achieved in those days of training for today, then your chances of victory are slimming than you think." I said as I leapt towards Frag.

"Ice Buster!" I yelled as I flew towards Frag wanting to finish this fight.

"I will not lose here! Glass Crashback!" He yelled as our attacks connected in the middle. An explosion was made due to the attacks connecting and we were both thrown back quite a bit.

Me and Frag then called out our next moves at the same time as each other as we slowed down from the pushback we had there.

"Ice Bullets!" I shouted.

"Glass Barrage!" Frag cried.

Frags attack involved him summoning several glass attacks that were in the form of small cylinders that were fired off towards me. My bullets were able to hit Frag in the chest and push him back some more, but I was hit square in the chest with one of the small cylinders that Frag casted.

Now, that attack there actually hurt somewhat. I was trying to save my armour for the eventual fight with the S-Class mage I would be fighting so that it would be in tip top shape. That of course me at that I was a bit more exposed than I usually was while fighting.

I gave a grunt of pain as I clutched my chest due to the injury there. Yet I stomached the pain and pushed forwards with the fight.

I then summoned two of my swords from my Requip storage. Hopefully this fusion move of mine could seal the deal here. Time was running out.

"Sorry Frag but I have the position of S-Class to win here. Shining Waves of Flame!" I yelled as I fired off my good old fusion move if fire and light towards Frag as he getting back up.

My attack connected flew towards Frag, and he seemed to realise that this attack would be quite devastating if it were to hit him. He gave a grunt and cried off one last spell.

"Sorry but I have to get going Cade, I have a race to win! Glass Flowback!" Frag called as he fired off a spell at my fusion attack.

This attack seemed to be a small blast of glass that exploded when it came into contact with my fusion attack creating a large explosion that blew me back somewhat.

'What the-!? That attack was powerful alright!' I thought as I regained my self and stood up straight. I looked around to try and see Frag again, wary of him trying to surprise attack me again – this time making sure to watch the top of the rocks as well as the ones on my level.

But as I was looking, a heavy realisation occurred to me.

Wait… the face Frag made when my fusion attack was heading towards him. The fact that he said "he had race to win". Did he… run away.

I froze and my eyes went wide with shock.

'N-No way! Frag ran away to try and win the race. He knows that he doesn't need to necessarily beat me. He just needs to finish before me and Scarlet! Is that what he is counting on?'

"Oh I don't think so!" I yelled as I immediately jumped back up on top of the rocks and tried to see Frag.

Wouldn't you know it, I saw him just finishing crossing the rocky formation and was back on the path, which lead back into the forest.

'THAT JERK! So much for "I have have to fight you to stop you from winning the race", he just pulled a runner on me!' I thought with rage.

I then made moves to follow Frag, me making sure to leap as fast as I could from the rocks above the sand, to the path that was not that far ahead from me. Frag would not be winning this race.

While I had no real way of checking the time, I could tell that it had been well over thirty minutes since the race had started. It wouldn't be long until the race would be over. I had to move quickly to secure my place in the second round.

Several more minutes had passed since I crossed the rocks formation and re-entered the forest that the path led into. I had now left the shore and was heading deeper into the island. Frat had made some good distance and was ahead of me a fair bit. But I think I was catching up to him.

I estimated that we only had around fifteen minutes left in the race, after that timer had ran out, Master would end the race if there was no winner. I picked up the lace and kept running, while following the path.

Oh how I wished I had a speed enchantment.

As I was running through one branch of trees, I suddenly came out on a very peculiar sight. There were some sort of ruins here in the forest.

The ruins that I saw were quite far spread and well build despite their clear age. Cracked sections of stone walls; almost looking like intact buildings. Some of these ruins still retained arched windows with decorated frames and stone carvings on the walls. They were all decorated by a series of intricate, tribal-looking motifs. The path I had been following now turned into a cracked stone road, although it was largely covered by grass.

I was so stunned by these ruins, that I actually stopped running to take in what I saw.

A few questions flew through my mind when I saw these ruins. Was there a previous civilisation here? Did humans live on Tenro Island years ago? The burnt houses obviously showed that some people lived on the island.

As my gaze drifted to a large building which was bigger than the rest, yet also burnt to the ground like the rest, I swore I heard some footsteps from behind me.

I quickly turned around expecting to see Frag, ready to take me by surprise. But I didn't see him.

Then I heard the footsteps again from behind me for a second time. I turned around even quicker this time and I DEFINITELY saw the figure of a person running behind one of the burned out houses.

I only saw her for a brief moment so I couldn't catch her face, but she looked like a child with long curly blonde hair and a pink, white dress. Also… I don't think she was wearing shoes. When I did see her for that brief moment, I got a few chills down my spine.

'W-Who was that!? I definitely saw someone there!' I thought with appreciation. 'But there can't be someone on this island. There was me, Frag, Scarlet, Master, the old man and the S-Class wizards. No one else got on board the ship. Unless we had a stowaway?'

As my mind raced for ideas, I remembered something important. That being I was in a race.

I quickly readjusted myself and got ready to resume running. Yes, when I finished in the race I could tell Master about the person that I saw! He has probably had to deal with stowaways before if he has came here often.

I immediately began to run again and followed the path forwards back into the forest. The pathway now turned back into a dirt brown colour and the ruins were left behind me as I pushed forwards.

As I had been running for a few minutes now, I could feel that I only had around ten minutes left in the race. How much longer did I need to go until the race was finished? I must be getting close now.

Right as I thought this, I turned a corner around a tree and saw that the pathway went in a straight line towards a cave system that was a good few meters away from where I was standing. What gave me hope however, was that I saw Master Makarov standing there at the cave system.

This… This was the final stretch! I had nearly won the race!

I gave a cry of joy as I made moves to run to where Master was, but before I could do that, I heard a voice from my right side.

"There you are. Seems like this is the end of the race." Frag said as he emerged from some trees to my right. "I got knocked off course somewhat due to a creature here. Thankfully I was able to make it back here. And just in time as well." He stated as he now faced me.

"You couldn't have moved a few minutes slower could you?" I sighed as I got into a fighting position.

Me and Frag stared at each other for a few seconds, before my situation got even worse. Another voice was heard from behind me this time.

"Finally… made it…" Came the voice of Scarlet from behind me.

I turned in shock and saw that the glitter mage had gotten back up. Much to my anger. Scarlet had quite a few bruises on her arms and her limbs. Yet she was still able to make it here just like me and Frag.

"Scarlet? I thought you were down for good." Frag muttered with surprise.

Scarlet smirked. "You can't keep a Fairy Tail wizard down that easily! Now step aside boys. There's only a few minutes left and I'd to be the one moving onto the next round." She said as she waved her hand at us.

I gave her a roll of my eyes, and Frag simply chuckled. "You think we'll step aside? After how far we've pushed forwards today?" I said.

Scarlet gave a sigh as she got into a fighting stance. So we were doing this then.

The three of us were in a triangular position, each of us occasionally watching the others to see if they would make a move. We faced each other down and prepared for the final fight of the first round.

A small bit of sweat rolled down my forehead, which it when moved down my face. When it moved off my face. I acted swiftly.

"Ice Beams!" I shouted as I fired off two beams. One for Scarlet and another for Frag. I had to end this quickly if I were to still win the race.

Frag jumped to the side to avoid my attack, while Scarlet made moves to counter my attack with a glitter attack. She then used her magic to summon a whip and send it towards Frag. "Glitter Whip!"

Frag was next to cry out an attack as her attack was coming his way. "Glass Crashback!" He shouted. This destroyed the whip as it was coming his way. He then used a spell to catch Scarlet off guard. "Glass Shatterback!"

As Frag sent all the waves of glass shards out towards Scarlet, Scarlet used her magic to summon more whips that caught the shards of glass while they were in the air – much to Frag's surprise. She then turned to me and smirked and sent the shards towards me!

I held up my hand and prepared a counter move to destroy the shards of glass. "Ice Slicer!" I cried as I sent the slices of ice that destroyed the glass, shattering it in the air.

Me, Frag and Scarlet then sent various attacks all at once at each other.

"Ice Wave!" I sent a wave of ice that was meant to engulf them both and win me the fight.

"Glitter bomb!" Scarlet sent a bomb of glitter towards Frag.

"Glass Beams!" Frag sent beams of glass that were meant to hit me and Scarlet.

Frag's beam was engulfed my wave of ice, while his other one hit Scarlet's bomb and caused an explosion that clouded the vision of them both for a moment. This meant that my Ice Wave was able to hit the both of them and overwhelm them.

While they were distracted and hit by my attack, I quickly moved behind Frag and and hit him in the back with an Ice Beam. This meant that he was sent flying forwards was now quite close to Scarlet.

Now it was time to end this fight and secure my position in the next round. I casted Soft and Soar and leapt up into the air and flew down towards them.

"I've had a blast fighting you two here! But I'm afraid I have to end this fight." I remarked as I powered up my finishing move. As I got closer to the ground and where they were, I pulled back my fist and powered up one final spell.

"It's over, Ice Extinction!" I shouted as I used my finishing move to cause an eruption of ice spikes on the ground where Frag and Scarlet were. They were both sent flying up into the air and crashed down on the ground below. I could see from here that they were both unconscious.

I smiled as I turned myself away from them. "Good fight. I can see why Master thinks you both deserve S-Class." I praised then, before I ran to the end of the pathway. It was now or never, only a few minutes were left.

I kept running until I finally got to where Master Makarov was. I had just crossed a small white chalk line that I assumed was the finish line. When crossing it, I practically collapsed to the ground after being tired from all that running.

"Please… tell me… that I finished in time…?" I panted with hope as I looked up at Master Makarov.

Actually now I got a closer look at him, I saw that he was a thought projection. I guess Master must be waiting somewhere else.

Master Makarov gave me nod of approval. "Yes, you finished in time Cade. Well done, I saw the whole fight that you had just there."

I gave a sigh of relief when Master said that. I did it! I stood back up and faced Master.

Master cleared his throat. "Now then Cade. The next part of the trial is right behind me." Master stepped aside somewhat for me to see.

Behind him was three large cave entrances that went deep into the small mountain that was behind us. Three entrances… could they be-

"These caves have an S-Class wizard from Fairy Tail inside of them. They will test you to see if you are ready to move forwards and become an S-Class wizard." Master explained as he gestured a hand at the cave entrances. "Remember. Only they will decide if you are worthy to move on or not." Master said with a sense of warning in his voice.

"Right. I understand. What do I do if they find me worthy?" I asked.

"Just exit the cave via the entrance in front of you when you enter. If you succeed, I will be waiting for you outside." Master said, before his thought projection began to waver somewhat. "Good luck Cade." He waved, before he then disappeared in front of me.

I was now alone in the forest, with the cave entrances in front of me. I took a deep breath before checking myself over.

I wasn't that badly hurt. Yes I had taken damage and felt a bit sore in some places, but I was still easily able to move around. I had been quite sparing with my magic so far. Also my armour had not been used yet. From where I stood, I was doing great! But I couldn't get cocky now. Who knows who I'll be fighting when I go through one of these caves.

After a quick moment of deciding what cave to pick, I chose the cave on the far right. I entered it and heard a noise from behind me. I turned and saw that some magical runes had been activated at the entrance, making it to where I couldn't leave now.

I clenched my fist and pushed forwards into the cave. After a few minutes of walking I came out into a small open area of the cave. Some daylight trickled in through the top of the cave, allowing light to enter. At the far end of the cavern I was in, I saw the exit.

Of course, I saw someone standing with their arms crossed blocking the exit. It was when I saw them standing there, I gave a grunt of annoyance. Life just had be this way huh?

"Give me a break…" I muttered under my breath as I saw who I would be fighting here.

The man gave a sneer when he saw me.

"Well now. I'm afraid that you will not be getting past me Cade. I've never seen you as an S-Class worthy wizard, and that will not change in this cave on this day." Came the voice of Ivan Dreyar, as he gave me a cocky smile.
