A gleaming black car is silent on the sand where cars park. Facing toward the waves, an object in the front of its prow brightens red as the salt waves splash upon it. The sounds of children playing, music blaring, and adults chatting are of no concern to the car. It sits as though it enjoys the scenery before it.

No one around the beach knows of a sentient computer inside the chassis except the driver sleeping peacefully inside. The Knight Industries Two Thousand, a miracle of technology back in 1982. Now at the age of forty, it continues to be, although the chassis itself is not the original it had. It's still a Trans AM, but now it's one from the late 1980s, and the interior changed from the days of push buttons to a heads-up display. KITT welcomed the changes, for he didn't want to be a relic of the past. He wants to keep up with the present and be around for the future. However, it turns out.

KITT's attention turns to his sleeping driver, Michael Knight. Now in his seventies, the man retired from FLAG more than ten years ago and didn't want to leave his partner, friend, and soulmate behind.

FLAG had flourished, and because of this, KITT had the choice to remain or leave. Staying at the foundation never occurred to the computer. He was programmed to serve Michael, but it was KITT's love for Michael that made the decision. Occasionally, he returns to FLAG for maintenance. CPU and circuits need their cleaning and upgrades as well. The foundation will always be a part of his life, but Michael continues to be his top priority.

KITT surveys the scenes before him and reflects on all the times he's been at the same beach in surveillance mode with his optics on Michael as he swam in the ocean, built sand castles with children, chatted with women in bikinis, and finally returned to KITT. He remembers the endless conversations between himself and Michael. There were the occasional complaints from the computer about the salty air.

Now, KITT treasures each day he's with Michael.

It's the end of summer, and the children will soon return to school. The adults will resume their lives working at jobs and raising their children.

KITT will return to observe when the children come back to play in the sand, swim in the water, and adults bask in the sun. Michael will be inside his cabin, sleeping peacefully, dreaming of the past when he played in the sand and swam in the water.
