Lingering Presence
Evangeline Pearl led a simple life in a small town, living alone. She was accustomed to it, but lately, strange things were happening.
She kept feeling a…presence, feeling followed everywhere. It was even more so during her evenings at home. She thought it was just her imagination running wild, and tiredness was making wilder.
One night, when she was in her living room in front of a fire, the imaginary presence waited until she was very tired in her recliner to stroke both sides of her face from behind.
She thought she must have been dreaming. It frightened her at first because she was being touched from her face to her shoulders to her arms.
She knew it wasn't trying to attack her and it felt sort of soothing, but there was something to these bold dream hands. She fell asleep before an invisible thing lifted her bridal style and brought her to her bedroom.
When she woke that morning, she thought for sure it was just an odd dream. She went on with her days, untroubled by the lingering presence which kept its eye on her during the day, and its hands on her at night.
After she sat down from another weary day, she was delicately yet boldly picked up to sit on something in the air.
"What in the world…?"
She felt herself lean the left side of her head against something, as if the mysterious force refused to release her. She flinched and shivered when her right shoulder was pressed up and down repeatedly.
Her right hand twitched as she moaned, debating whether to savor this or not. Why not? It was just a dream… A weird but interesting dream. She relinquished, wondering what she was going to dream tomorrow night.
Evangeline went by her day, deliberately letting her imagination run wild again, feeling the back of her hands stroked slowly and her arms held.
She felt like something, or someone was watching over her, and she felt less alone. She chose to appreciate this, eagerly on her way home to sit and fall asleep on her chair again.
Then… everything felt different. She was even more exhausted than usual even though something touched her shoulders to make her stand up, her eyes still closed.
She felt herself being covered in something before someone held her right hand they gently tugged, wanting her to let them lead.
She didn't understand, but it was just a dream, so she did, more curious than ever. Then, nothing. She was lying down on something, unconscious for hours.
When she finally came around, she looked to see she wasn't at home anymore. In fact, this place… didn't look like a human home. She slowly lifted herself up, carefully taking in her new surroundings.
The aura in the air scared her. She heard below her laughter that sounded anything but sane. Kneeling, she cautiously peeked over after knowing her location was on a tower with no walls or ceiling. Far below were monstrous creatures dancing around, howling and cackling madly. They almost looked like something from a circus, a circus of freaks from a nightmare.
Was this a nightmare? She sure hoped it was. She looked down at herself and was shocked to see she was in clothes that made her look sort of like a very feminine court jester in a dress, but the colors were a mix of dark green flames and black.
This had to be a dream, good or bad.
"Ah, awake at last," said a voice behind her. Evangeline gasped, startled to be walked in on from behind, but she wasn't able to turn around when the person put something on her face.
It was a green mask that matched her new clothes, but it wasn't ordinary. It had an effect on her that took the fight out of her. She breathed, terrified at first, but then she slowly started to not care as her mind went numb like before.
She breathed more calmly before an open left hand with claws was in front of her. Wordlessly, she took the hand that pulled her up to her feet.
She looked at the male before her. He looked like a court jester, too, red-and-black with horns, a sort of armor and a golden mask with black feathers at the corners. His eyes were teal and looked cat-like, and he could float!
She wasn't bothered by that or that he was the one who must have spirited her from her house. She just watched quietly as he bowed gracefully to her, his hand still holding hers.
"Reala at your service."
She didn't acknowledge. She knew she wasn't supposed to. Not having a choice, she played along, waiting to see what this was all about. His touch was familiar, though.
Evangeline instantly realized it was him coming to her and he had brought her here, wherever in Heaven's name it was. His touch, despite how cold the air in this horrid place was making it, told her he didn't intend to harm her, which was a consolation.
"Come, let me show you around," he insisted in an airy tone, his right hand on his chest before he held a lock of her hair in his fingers, lightly stroking her left cheek. "And afterward, I'll explain all."
Well, at least he planned to elaborate. Whether or not it would be the truth, she would see.
