Chapter 18-Shane's choice

Daryl's P.O.V

Daryl watched Amy as she slept. "I lost my wife at the start," Daryl turns his head and looks at Hershel. "She had gone into town with my stepson Shawn and they got attacked, they camp back and we didn't know what this was. I sat in that chair right there as my wife suffered, watching her the same way you are watching Amy."

"Sorry about your wife," Daryl says and Hershel nods as he sets a bag down beside the bed. "Some bandages and medicine for her. If you don't mind, I would like to show you how to change her bandage."

"Aren't you going to be stopping by?" Daryl asks. "I will be, but that bandage will need to be changed more than once a day and I imagine you will be with her a decent amount. I showed her sister last night, but I would like to show you as well," Hershel tells Daryl who nods as he stands up. "Will she be in a bed?" "Dale has a bed in the R.V she'll stay in," Daryl tells Hershel who nods. "Good," Hershel says. "Alright, let's wake her up," Hershel tells Daryl who nods as they wake Amy up.

Lori's P.O.V

Lori set a bag down in her room and sighed. "Lori," Lori turns around and looks at Alicia. "Did you get it?" Lori asks Alicia who nods as she shuts the door. She pulls the pregnancy test out of her bag and holds it out to Lori. "Thank you."

"What are you going to do if it positive?" Alicia asks as Lori sits down. "I don't know," Lori says.

"It would be Shane," Alicia says and Lori nods. "Even if he wasn't in a hospital bed before this, Rick and I, it wasn't like that anymore," Lori says.

"I know it isn't my business but can I give you my opinion?" Alicia asks Lori who nods. "If you are pregnant. I think you should have it, that baby would be a symbol of hope, that even in this world, we can still have a future. But it's not my choice."

"Alicia, keep this to yourself, please."

"I told Glenn," Alicia tells her. "But I'll tell him." "Thank you," Lori says and Alicia nods as she leaves the room.

Shane's P.O.V

Shane put a bag in his car and looks at Rick as he walks up behind him. "Are you preparing for this to go bad already?" Rick asks. "Just being prepared, man," Shane tells him. "We don't know what could happen." Rick nods. "I think you and I need to have a talk," Rick says. "About Lori."

"Figured it out, huh?" Shane asks. "Didn't take me long," Rick says. "I understand why you guys did it, you thought I was dead, but when I found it, I wanted to knock your teeth out." "Nothing happened before, if I had known you were alive, nothing would have happened, Rick I swear." "I know," Rick says. "But I wanna make sure everything is clear, she's my wife, Carl is my son, is that clear?"

Shane stays silent for a moment before he nods. "Yeah, man, it's clear." Rick nods as he walks away from his best friend who watches him.

T-dog's P.O.V

T-dog was in the back of the house putting fuel in the generator. "How's it going, T-dog?" Dale asks as he walks back there. "Good, I'm about to turn this on. After I'll see about getting us hot water," T-dog tells Dale who nods. "What's up?" "I heard a conversation earlier, between Shane and Merle. It seems like Shane is planning to leave," Dale tells him.

"You think he should?" T-dog asks. "I think Shane is a hothead who could get someone killed," Dale says. "You don't seem to angry about it." "Doesn't matter to me either way," T-dog tells him. "Shane is his own man, if he decides that it is time for him to move on, then that is his choice. We'll keep going either way, why did you come and tell me?"

"Because if he leaves, I think you should take his place?"

"Why me? Why not Rick or Daryl?" "No everybody trusts Daryl and Rick doesn't have enough experience to lead," Dale says. "Just think about it, Shane might stay but if he does leave, you'll have my vote," Dale tells T-dog before he walks away.

Travis's P.O.V

Travis stood on the porch watching Shane as he helped Chase put his tent up. He feels Madison's arms wrap around his waist. "You okay?" Madison asks him.

"I'm just thinking," Travis tells him.

"About?" Madison asks as she looks at Shane. "Never mind. You're worried about him." "I'm worried about what he might do," Travis says. "He's gotten worse since Rick came back, said some concerning things." "You need to talk to him, you're his friend. You might be the only person he trusts at the moment," Madison says as they Otis's truck coming down the road. "Daryl is here with Amy." Travis nods as Otis stops the truck and Dale opens the bed where Daryl was sitting with Amy. "You need help?" Travis asks Daryl. "I got her," Daryl says as he climbs out of the bed and picks Amy up. "I got the bed cleared up, come on," Dale tells Daryl who nods as he follows him. "Talk to him Travis," Madison tells Travis who nods as Madison walks away from him.

Merle's P.O.V

Merle finds Daryl sitting by a tree smoking a cigarette. "You going to share?" Merle asks and Daryl holds the pack out to his brother who takes one. "I thought you'd be with Blondie," Merle says. "Giving her some time with Andrea," Daryl tells him. "What's going to happen after you leg is healed?" "What do you mean, baby brother?" Merle asks as he looks at his brother. "You're wondering if I'm gonna play nice," Merle says and Daryl stays silent. "Come on, baby brother say it, you're worried that you're going to have to babysit me so you won't have so much time to spend with your blond friend," Merle growls. "It ain't that," Daryl says. "It ain't, really?" Merle asks. "Come on, Darlene, speak up for youself!" Merle shouts at his brother. "Fine, that is it!" Daryl shouts back at his brother who looks at him shocked, his brother has never yelled at him. "I'm worried that you're going to fuck this up for me, for us! All I've ever done is follow you! Listen to your bullshit about it just being you and me! But it ain't, not anymore! I don't need you to love these people but you have to live with them and surivie with 'em! They're our people now too! Even if some of 'em don't like us! So please for once in your life, follow my lead! Try to not be such an asshole!" Daryl shouts at his brother who just stares at him. Daryl scoffs as he grabs his crossbow and walks away from his brother. Merle looks around at the group who had watched and listen to the conversation

"What the fuck are you people looking at?" Merle asks as he walks away.

Hershel's P.O.V

Hershel sat in the dining room eating when Otis walked in. "Are you sure working with them is the best choice?" Otis asks Hershel who looks at him. "You don't think it is?" Hershel asks. "I'm just worried about the barn," Otis tells him. "If they find out about it, they will destroy it,"

"They will not find out about the barn, they will rarely be on the property. They do know how to surivie out there and why I may not agree with them about killing the infected, I would like Maggie and Beth to know how to survive out there," Hershel tells Otis who nods. "Everything will be fine, Otis," Hershel tells the larger man who nods as he walks away. Hershel stands up and walks onto the porch and walks the barn.

Daryl's P.O.V

Daryl walked into the R.V and into the back where Amy was laying. "You alright?" Amy asks. "You heard that?" Daryl asks. "I think the entire state did," Amy tells him. "I'm glad you stood up for yourself."

"He just kept pushing me," Daryl says. "I don't want to lose what I have gained, not because of Merle." "I have a feeling that your brother wants what is best for him, maybe he is starting to realize that this group is what's best for you." "No this group, you and Glenn," Daryl says. "It's not just me and Glenn, you're friends with some of the others. Even Lori doesn't hate you and I know Rick sees you as a friend. You're a part of this group and everybody besides Shane has accepted that," Amy says.

"Thanks," Daryl says. "I got first watch, so I will see you in the morning," Daryl says as he stands up.

"Goodnight, Daryl." "Night," Daryl says as he leaves the R.V

Travis's P.O.V

That night Travis sat on the porch. Most of the group had gone to sleep and Travis watched as Daryl stood on top of the R.V. Travis stands up when he sees Shane throwing a bag in his car. Travis walks off the porch and towards Shane as he shuts the trunk to his car. "What are you doing?" Travis asks him. Shane turns around and looks at him.

"I'm leaving," Shane says. "This group, man. It ain't the right place for me." "Shane, you don't want to leave, this group needs you," Travis says.

"No, you don't, you have Rick and the Dixon brothers. The thing is Travis, this group is weak, you're weak. None of you will do what has to be done, you all want to keep the old world is dead man, it's gone, we'll never get it back. You all seem to think that it will get better, that your luck will continue, but it won't and people will start to die cause if you don't fight you die. You gotta fight to live now Travis and none of you seem to understand that. Besides for those two redneck pieces of trash that seem to be staying and that will be a mistake, I promise you that. Good luck to you, Travis. You guys are going to need it," Shane says as he walks away to the drivers side of the car. He climbs in the car, starts it and drives away from the farm while Travis watches in shock. He stood there for minutes and finally moved when Daryl walked up behind him. "You could have tried harder," Daryl says. "He would have listened to you probably."

"I didn't know what to say," Travis says.

"I think you know this is for the best," Daryl says making Travis look at him. "Tell the others in the morning, go get some sleep, man," Daryl says as he walks back towards the R.V. "Daryl," Travis says making the redneck looks at him. "Do you really think we'll be better off without him." "I do, and so do you, even if you don't want to admit it," Daryl says before he continues walking.

Thanks for reading. Yes for now Shane is gone, I love Shane and I have a lot more story for him but I don't need him for the rest of the farm and I didn't want to kill him. Shane will still be in the story as he does have a story to tell away from the group. As always suggestions, ideas, and feedback are welcomed. Until next time.
