75 Years Chapter 14

Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Games

The Farm Arena proved to be a success for Gamemaker Coriolanus Snow. The Arena for the Fourteenth Hunger Games was to be a Space Centre. Thanks to an old book written long before the Dark Days, in which the author described a "rocket launching into space, carrying four people towards the Moon", Snow's team managed to recreate the Space Centre down to the last detail. The Tributes included a pair of twins from District 6.

The Tributes:

District 1: Agate Inch (17), Marvellous Bennett (18). Mentor: Molly Frost (18)

District 2: Jocasta Kerr (16), Atlas Duncan (17)

District 3: Aja Chandler (14), Timothy Cheng (16)

District 4: Moana Odair (15), Aalto Simms (16). Mentor: Mags Flanagan (19)

District 5: Urania Bell (13), Hydrogen Molyneux (17). Mentor: Tammy Winchester (19)

District 6: Lyndsey Schirra (16), Marty Schirra (16)

District 7: Dinah West (16), John Blakeway (12)

District 8: Velvey Wyn (16), Shaun Hudgell (17)

District 9: Demeter Whitehead (15), Farro Marginson (17)

District 10: Tamie Ward (14), Pork Russell (14)

District 11: Apricot Tarrant (14), Dekopon Luby (16)

District 12: Olivia Penfold (17), Rocky Correa (16)

The Games.

As the twenty-four Tributes stood around the Cornucopia, Atlas of District 2 spotted a sword, and no sooner than the gong rang did he ran to the weapon. As most Tributes scattered Atlas slammed a small boy into a replica of an Orion spacecraft, killing him.

24th: John Blakeway, District 7. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Atlas. Bloodbath.

John would be the first of only three Tributes that would die in the Bloodbath. Atlas' District Partner, Jocasta, spotted a boy hiding in a Mercury spacecraft. Grabbing a small sword, she ran to the spacecraft and struck the replica, killing the boy in the process.

23rd: Pork Russell, District 10. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Jocasta. Bloodbath

The final kill of the Bloodbath was made by Agate, who fired an arrow at a small girl; the arrow pierced the girl's windpipe, leaving her to suffocate in her own blood.

22nd: Apricot Tarrant, District 11. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Agate. Bloodbath

Agate smiled proudly as she rejoined the Pack, preparing for a Tribute Hunt while the other Tributes scattered.

Day 2 opened with a hurricane, which caused the launch tower to buckle. A pair of Tributes from District 4, sheltering under the tower, huddled tightly. Eventually, an hour later, the beam broke and landed on the two Tributes, crushing them.

21st: Moana Odair, District 4. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by debris. Day 2

20th: Aalto Simms, District 4. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by debris. Day 2

That afternoon on Day 2, both Jocasta and Atlas cornered a frightened girl. With their weapons, Jocasta stabbed the girl in the chest before Atlas gutted her.

19th: Tamie Ward, District 10. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Jocasta and Atlas. Day 2.

Days 3 and 4 brought no deaths, but on Day 5, a surge of water from the hurricane flooded the launchpad near the damaged tower. Four Tributes was sheltering in the blockhouse, and as the water level gradually increased all four drowned.

18th: Aja Chandler, District 3. 14th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 5

17th: Dekopon Luby, District 11. 14th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 5

16th: Olivia Penfold, District 12. 14th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 5

15th: Rocky Correa, District 12. 14th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 5.

Meanwhile, Marvellous had speared a slight boy from District 8 as he attempted to reach the Vehicle Assembly Building.

14th: Shaun Hudgell, District 8. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Marvellous. Day 5.

The last death of Day 5 was made mid-afternoon, when Agate found a small girl hiding behind a trio of statues of three men in spacesuits. The girl screamed as Agate slashed her, the blood staining the podium of the statue.

13th: Urania Bell, District 5. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Agate. Day 5.

With half the Tributes dead within five days, Gamemaker Coriolanus Snow was getting frustrated at how the Tributes were not actively hunting each other and demanded that alligator mutts be released into the Arena the next day.

On Day 6, a girl from District 8 walked down the Crawlerway leading to one of the intact launch pads when she felt something grab her by the leg. The girl screamed as the alligator mutt munched her to death.

12th: Velvey Wyn, District 8. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by alligator mutt. Day 6

The alligator mutt wasn't done yet, as they then went towards a sleeping boy from District 3. Timothy woke up before he went into shock as he saw one of the alligator mutts clamp its jaws on his waist, before passing out as the mutt's jaws cleaved him in two.

11th: Timothy Cheng, District 3. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by alligator mutt. Day 6.

With the mutts' work done, they vanished into the ground.

As the sun approached midday, Agate and Marvellous came across a group of four Tributes inside the Vehicle Assembly Building. The twins, Marty and Lyndsey Schirra, managed to flee as the two District 1 Tributes hacked the District 9 pair.

10th: Farro Marginson, District 9. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Agate. Day 6.

9th: Demeter Whitehead, District 9. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Marvellous. Day 6

The Final Eight had been decided: Agate Inch of District 1, Marvellous Bennett of District 1, Jocasta Kerr of District 2, Atlas Duncan of District 2, Hydrogen Molyneux of District 5, Lyndsey Schirra of District 6, Marty Schirra of District 6 and Dinah West of District 7. Day 7 saw no deaths due to the Final Eight Interviews, but the pair from District 6 would be left badly injured on the evening of Day 7 when they fought with Atlas.

Early on Day 8, Dinah West found the two District 6 Tributes, and they pleaded with her to end their suffering. With an axe, Dinah axed them in the chest.

8th: Marty Schirra, District 6. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Dinah. Day 8

7th: Lyndsey Schirra, District 6. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Dinah. Day 8.

That afternoon, as Dinah sat at an abandoned launch pad, she looked at the plaque on the remnants of the launch tower. In the meantime, the District 1 and 2 Tributes had cornered Hydrogen. Noticing some rocket fuel behind him, he got his knife out and pierced the canister, resulting in a fireball that consumed the area around him.

6th: Hydrogen Molyneux, District 5. 14th Hunger Games. Suicide. Day 8

5th: Agate Inch, District 1. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Hydrogen. Day 8

4th: Jocasta Kerr, District 2. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Hydrogen. Day 8

3rd: Atlas Duncan, District 2. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Hydrogen. Day 8

2nd: Marvellous Bennett, District 1. 14th Hunger Games. Killed by Hydrogen. Day 8

All over Panem, the nation waited with bated breath as the Gamemakers tried to put the fire out. After half an hour one of the Gamemakers looked at the vitals and said "Coriolanus, a Tribute is alive". In the Arena, Dinah watched as an army of Hovercrafts attempted to put the fire out to collect the bodies of the dead. Finally, the sound of trumpets echoed around the Arena.

1st: Dinah West, District 7. 14th Hunger Games. VICTOR.

Aftermath:

District 7 was glad to finally have a Victor. For many years the Arena of the 14th Hunger Games would be the least-visited due to the fire damage; subsequently the 14th Hunger Games would be the third Arena to be destroyed after the Mockingjay Rebellion, following the 29th Hunger Games and the City Arenas. Dinah herself would become a Mentor, but she would also become a thorn in the future President Snow's side, and during the 57th Hunger Games, she and two other Victors would be assassinated on Snow's orders for humiliating the Capitol. In District 7, a tree, descendant of the tree near the hut in the District, would be planted in her memory. It seemed appropriate that the tree planted in District 7 in their first Victor's memory is a Moon Tree in reference to her Arena, and in honour of the long-dead man whose memorial bench Dinah hid under during the fireball. It made me wonder, if the man knew his memorial bench would save the life of a girl centuries later? Dinah's tree is part of the "Victors Forest", a forest of 75 trees, each one in memory of a Hunger Games Victor and what they went through. The forest has four "Moon Trees", dedicated to one of the Victors; The Mockingjay herself is commemorated in a "Moon Tree" along with the Victors of the 14th, 19th and 29th Hunger Games.

List of Victors:

1st Hunger Games: Edgar Parlour (District 1)

2nd Hunger Games: Virgil Barde (District 8)

3rd: Hunger Games: Ginny Canova (District 11)

4th Hunger Games: Horsa Georges (District 10)

5th Hunger Games: Mmseyone Musk (District 3)

6th Hunger Games: Paris Curl (District 2)

7th Hunger Games: Chive Carmichael (District 9)

8th Hunger Games: Samson Wilson (District 6)

9th Hunger Games: Hestia Curl (District 2) *

10th Hunger Games: Lucy Grey Baird (District 12)

11th Hunger Games: Mags Flanagan (District 4)

12th: Tammy Winchester (District 5)

13th: Molly Frost (District 1) *

14th Hunger Games: Dinah West (District 7)

Here it is, District 7's first Victor. The Space Centre Arena was a carry over from the 2018 version. I will try and complete the current decade by the end of this year, but next year I'll be busy with my original project as I have a plot point from 2007 to try and wrap up. But I'll try and update whenever I can, and I have a Spreadsheet on Google to keep track of Tributes. I also love the idea that District 7 would create a forest to honour their Victors, which after the Rebellion, would later honour every single Victor of the Games, becoming known as "The Victors' Forest". Yes, Moon Trees does exist.
