As things were going on back on the ship, Davis and Kari were trying to make the most of their situation on their island. Since they're stuck on the island, they have to try and live on it as best as they could. For example, Davis is using the ocean water to try and bathe himself. As he tried to washout his hair, he thought about what he was going to do about their situation. It's not safe for them to head out to sea when they have no idea where to go. Before, he would have loved to be stuck with Kari, but that was back when they were kids. Now, things are different. Should he confront her about how he feels? Would it really change anything between them.
"Davis! Davis, are you out here?!" Kari called as she made her way out to the beach.
"Yeah! I'm over here!" Davis called. "Something wrong?!"
"I found some bananas! Can you help me get them when you're done?!" Kari called.
"Sure! I'll be right there!" Davis called. Once Kari got him to do that, she went back to the tree where she found the bananas. The problem was that they were high up on a thin tree. She tried reaching out of them, but she just couldn't quite get to them.
"Okay, this isn't going to be easy." Kari said, but she had to try. She grabbed a hold of the tree and tried to make her way up so that she could get the fruit. After all, they can't have jerky the whole time. She tried her best to climb up the tree and could almost grab the bananas. "Almost have it..." She reached out for the fruit, but she ended up losing her grip on the tree and began to plummet to the ground.
"Kari!" Davis arrived just in time. Kari fell right into his arms and he was able to catch her with him falling on his butt. "You okay?"
"Yeah. Nice catch." Kari said as she was impressed with his quick action.
"I thought you said you needed my help." Davis said.
"I had to try. Excuse me." Kari said as she tried to get herself up. She balanced herself by holding on to Davis' shoulders, but that was when she realized that he wasn't wearing a shirt. She looked down and noticed Davis was in pretty good shape and he even felt a little more muscular than she thought.
"You sure you okay? Why are you staring at me like that?" Davis questioned.
"Oh! Sorry." Kari said as she moved away. "I just realized that you're a lot...stronger than I remember."
"I am?" Davis questioned. "I guess I have been working out a lot." Getting his frustrations out with his soccer seems to have helped him get into better shape than he realized. "Anyway, you want some bananas?"
"Yeah, but I can't reach them up that tree." Kari said.
"No worries. I'll give you a boost. Get on my shoulders and our combined height might be able for you to get some." Davis said.
"Are you sure? I don't want to hurt you." Kari said.
"Too late." Davis whispered.
"What did you say?" Kari asked.
"Nothing. Just climb up." Davis said. Kari didn't know what was going on with him, but she just brushed it off. Davis gave her a boost and she climbed over him with her placing her feet on his shoulders and Davis keeping her up. "Grab a few green ones. They may not be ripe yet, but timing it just right will make them taste better."
"Okay." Kari said as she grabbed a few of the bananas and pulled them right out.
"While you searching around the island, you didn't find any coconuts or anything, did you?" Davis questioned.
"No, at least not yet." Kari said.
"That's too bad. If we can't find any drinking water here, we might be in trouble." Davis said.
"There must be some a spring of fresh water somewhere. What else could keep these plants alive?" Kari said. "I've got enough, I'm coming down."
"Hang on." Davis said as he lowered himself down so that Kari could just safely get down. "Okay. You can just jump down." Kari jumped down and landed on the ground.
"Thanks." Kari said.
"Don't mention it." Davis said as he stood back up and Kari getting a full view of how he looks without his shirt on. Oddly, she never knew how fit he was and it was a bit difficult for her to stop looking. He was stronger than she thought. "What? What is it now?"
"Nothing." Kari said as she turned away from him. She asked herself on what she was thinking. She can't be checking out other men when she's still with T.K. Then again, things are different from when they were kids now.
...
The Cave
Kari and Davis went back to the cave they were staying in. Until they can get rescued, they're using the cave as their shelter. With it also being near the top of a cliff, they can see most the island and will be able to tell if someone is coming to save them.
"This isn't so bad." Davis said.
"We've only been here for about a day. Even people on Survivor have endured longer than this, and we have less supplies than they do." Kari said.
"Yeah, but didn't you, Tai, and the others had to survive weeks in the Digital World or something?" Davis questioned.
"I was at home when Tai and the others had to go through all of that." Kari said. "I didn't set foot into the Digital World until you could see parts of it in the sky and I had to go with them to fight the Dark Masters."
"Well, I'm sure we'll be saved long before then." Davis said. He was hoping that so he doesn't have to constantly deal with this personal struggle of his. "I think I'm going to go out and look for coconuts and fresh water. We might have that bottle that came with the lifeboat, but I'm not sure how long that's going to last between the two of us."
"What? Are you going to gulp it down like a fish?" Kari joked, but Davis wasn't laughing. He just got up and was going to leave for other supplies they could use, but Kari took a little offense to that. "Davis, wait a minute. It feels more like you're trying to avoid me."
"What?" Davis said. "That's... That's not what I'm doing. I'm just trying to get us the things we need." That was really just a cover. He believes that if he stays around Kari, he might do something he can't undo because of how much he cares for her but unable to have her.
"But we're going to be okay for a while. Can't you just stay here and actually talk to me?" Kari said. "I feel like you're trying to avoid me, like you hate that you're stuck on this island WITH me."
"No... It's not like that..." Davis claimed, but even he didn't believe that. So, he swallowed his pride and sat back down. He had to do something to ease the tension between them because the last thing he would want is for Kari to think he hates her. "I really don't mind being stuck here with you. In fact, this actually reminds me of a time when we were kids."
"Huh?" Kari questioned.
"It was back before the others came around and it was just you and me." Davis said. "Don't you remember this one summer? You and I went down to the beach, but a rainstorm was coming. It wasn't like what we just went through, but you and I took cover under a pier."
"Yeah..." Kari said. Now that Davis mentioned it, she did think back to that time. The two of them had to be about eight, before they met the others. They went down to the beach together and tried to have some fun together. When the rain came that day, Davis grabbed Kari's hand and ran for cover. The two of them stayed hidden under a pier like they're doing now in the cave. They had to stay there until Tai came with an umbrella and got the two of them. "I remember that now. I almost forgot. How did you remember?"
"I just did. You and I had a lot of fun together." Davis claimed. Kari actually forgot how fun that day was. The two of them played with the waves and in the sand until the rain came. She also remembered how Davis tried to keep her entertained while they were waiting for Tai.
"Yeah. I guess we did have some fun together that day." Kari said.
"Maybe it was just that one day for you, but there was more for me." Davis said with him smiling.
"Hey! There's the Davis I know, and with that big smile he always had on that face. I've missed that smile." Kari said. Davis didn't know she liked it when he smiled, but there hasn't be a lot to smile about lately. Once it went away, Kari could tell something was going on with him. "I can tell there's something going on with you. Can't you just talk to me?" Kari asked.
"Look who's talking. This coming from the girl that keeps everything bottled up." Davis said. "Yolei told me you do that so only you get hurt, but sometimes not being upfront and honest with people about how you feel can hurt people, too."
"What? Like who?" Kari questioned.
"Like... Like... Like Tai." Davis said as a cover. "Tai is your big brother, but not being upfront about how your feeling bothers him." That's what he claimed, but Kari suspected that he was really talking about himself. "I think I'm going to toss out the discarded food. It's going to attract wild animals." Finding a good reason to leave, he grabbed all the banana peels and was leaving, but Kari still had trouble understanding. Kari tried fishing for some answers, but she didn't catch what she was looking for. The Davis she knows is usually optimistic, cheery, may not be that bright, but usually has a good heart. Where's the Davis she knows?
...
Davis
Davis needed a moment to leave Kari alone. Talking to her like that made him feel good for a minute, but when she started to talk serious, he had to get out of there. If he has to take how he's feeling to his grave, he will. Once he discarded the leftovers, he needed a moment to clear his head. He went back down to the beach and tried to calm himself down with all the ocean sounds. He's having a mixture of feelings going on between happy, sad, frustrated, and more. At this point, he isn't sure what he's suppose to feel.
"Oh man. I just don't get it." Davis said. "First, she isn't interested me. Then, she tells me that I should try to get with Mina. It seemed like it's finally over for me. Then, we end up here. After who knows how many years when I'm feeling all kinds of frustrated, she and I finally have a nice moment together and she remembers a great memory from when we were kids. Why is this all happening?" He closed his eyes and tried to calm down. As he was trying to relax, his mind went over to that one memory they were talking. Being on this beach has him think of that time, but things quickly shifted. He imaged how Kari is now with her in the water. Since she doesn't have a swimsuit, he ended up imagined her without her clothes, beckoning for her to come and join her, the two of them with nothing on or between them, and... "What am I doing?!" He realized what he was thinking as he could suddenly feel something growing in his pants. That's why he jumped right into the water and tried to get himself to calm down. "No, Davis! You can't think of that sort of thing now!" He told himself. Then, he looked down at his reflection in the water and felt like the ripples were mimicking how he felt. "It's over..." He tried to tell himself, but he wished it wasn't like that. "Why did this have to happen to me now?"
...
Kari
Kari remained in the cave. After Davis left, she did some thinking and looked back at her own past. Being reminded of that one time in their past, Kari got to thinking about some other times in the past. It was all before Davis became part of the team. She remembered how they met when he tried out for soccer. She also remembered how he came over when she was sick and kept her company, how he showed her how to play soccer like Tai, and how her pet cat Miko was lost with him spending the whole day trying to help her find it. It never really hit Kari till just now, but Davis has been a better friend to her than she thought.
"Hmm... Looking back, Davis was there for me more than I thought." Kari said. "I sort of suspected he had a bit of crush on me, but I always thought that was because he admired Tai. I have to admit that it was a little fun to tease him, but it was nothing personal. I guess when we went back to the Digital World..." Thinking back, things seemed to have changed when the Digital World needed their help once again. That was when Yolei, Cody, and T.K. became a part of the picture, and Ken soon joined. After that, things weren't like the way they were before, but she thought that was because things were getting serious. She didn't quite see it until just now, and she knew Davis always had a problem with T.K. Then, her thoughts shifted to how she felt about T.K. Things lately have been feeling like they were back then. That's not how it's suppose to be when you're in a relationship. "T.K... Things between us are great, but why does it feel like there's something missing?" Perhaps Kari can use this time to try and figure out what she really wants and what's missing in her relationship, her romantic one with T.K. and her friendship with Davis. What's missing with them?
...
Later
The sun was starting to go down and was going to be dark soon. Still no sign of a ship or anything that might be able to help them. Davis and Kari waited in the cave, but it looks like they're going to be staying on the island a little longer.
"You think they even search islands when someone is lost at sea?" Davis questioned.
"I'm not sure, but I doubt it's going to happen today." Kari said. "We might have to face the facts that it's going to be a long time before anyone finds us. At least we're safe here. If we were out there, we would be in big trouble. It would be days before we got back to the main lands. We might not even be on any coast guard routes." She was starting to get a little miserable thinking they might never get off the island.
"Come on, Kari. Don't think like that." Davis said. "They'll find us. If they don't, our friends will. They can be pretty resourceful, and I doubt Tai and T.K. won't stop until they find you." That did make Kari feel a little better. "It's going to be dark soon, so you might want to get that blanket ready."
"Me? What about you?" Kari questioned.
"There's only one blanket." Davis said.
"But it's big enough for the both of us. You won't be able to keep the fire going all night." Kari said. "We... We can share." Kari said with her face blushing.
"No!" Davis said. "That... That won't be... I'm fine." He claimed because he doesn't really trust himself in that situation. Besides, if he's going to try to move on and let her go, he can't allow himself to be caught in those situations. He's got to try and keep her distance. Soon, the sun went down and it was night. Kari used the blanket to try sleep, but it was harder than she thought since Davis' snoring echoed through the cave.
"What was I worried about?" Kari complained. She couldn't believe she was the one having trouble sleeping, but then she noticed that Davis was shivering between snores. She knew this was going to happen. "For Pete's sake..." She found this to be ridiculous. Sleeping under the same blanket as her has to be better than freezing the whole night. That's what she did. She grabbed the blanket and placed it right over him so that they could share. She was a little nervous about this, but she has to do this, even if it means she has to be right next to that noise machine. "I doubt I'm sleeping at all." She just tried to rest right next to him. Just then, she felt something off. Davis turned in his sleep and managed to place his arm around her. When he did that, all the snoring seems to have stopped. It was weird. When Kari tried to move it, the snoring started again. It was a weird enigma. If it meant she actually could sleep, she left his arm right over and the two of them slept peacefully together.
