CHAPTER 27
THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
"I'm sorry, Dianna. But I can't wait forever for you to decide" Nick gazed at Dianna's face while he said that. She was leaning at the balcony of the building, pretending to watch the people down at the street, under the old trees, that still had Christmas lights hanging.
"I don't think I can decide this now, Nick. I've been really busy with all these interrogations" Dianna glanced at him.
Nick touched her forearm, that was resting on the handrail. "Look at me" he called her, affectionate, and she turned to face him. "You know the interrogations are almost over, we're close to getting the leader. In about one or two days this mission will end, and probably the Navy will ask you to linger here for a couple of weeks to do some minor interrogations and follow ups, at most. Nothing really important. And then, you'll have to decide, if you come with me, or if you go with him, to the next deployment".
She knew he was right, but she just stared blankly at Nick's handsome face.
He glanced to the sides, then came really close to her.
"Isn't this your dream? You even applied twice to consult for the CIA, but they denied you before, because your green card was too recent". Nick whispered at her.
"Yes. I know. But it's not the right time, I think" she whispered back, feeling anxious.
Nick sighed. "There is no right time, Dianna. There will always be something. I know you really care about the guys, and you obviously have something with Hayes" she looked at him, alarmed, and he slightly smiled. "Yes, everyone can see it. But are you really going to refuse a once in a life time opportunity like this because of him? You're not even official, whatever it is that you two are. And if you really think that you have a future with him, and the team, isn't it best if you go now, and come back with your dream job?"
She looked at him, excited. "I don't… I didn't know that was possible. Do you think they'd let me work with Bravo again?"
Nick chuckled. "Dianna, they sent me here, for weeks, especially to recruit you. And trust me, I'm one of their top recruiters", he cockily grinned at her, and she chuckled. "Off the record, I think that if you tell me, on the record, that you accept working for the CIA as long as you can be linked to Bravo Team, I really don't think they'd deny you that. And as you know, you could have access to all the data and intel from the CIA, and even plan ops with Davis, if you want to".
Dianna shook her head. "Oh no, I don't think I have a good memory for names, dates and places, to plan for an op. I wouldn't want to be a CIA agent and all that. Interrogating is my thing. Honestly. I'd focus only on interrogating, and maybe assisting Davis".
"There you go, see? You're already thinking ahead, for when you'll be an interrogator for the Agency" he smiled.
"But, who would replace me? I can't jeopardize Bravo and the Navy" she asked, concerned.
"Well, if you haven't noticed, besides a top recruiter, I'm also a top interrogator for the CIA. And I really enjoyed working with a DEVGRU team. So, if you say yes, I'd come back right after you leave, and fill your spot with Bravo".
"Seriously?" Dianna was really happy, because Nick was a million times better at interrogating than Jessica. She really bonded with Nick, he was a bit quirky, like her.
"Yes. Maybe we can even work together when you come back" he maliciously said to her, because they both knew it meant that Jessica would rotate to some other team.
Dianna kept quiet for a while, pensive. This was all almost too good to be true. Almost.
"How would it be done?" she murmured, and looked up at him. "What, huh, excuse would I use?"
Nick leaned down on the handrail, looking at the street. "To be honest, the timing is so perfect that you barely would need an excuse. I found out yesterday that you'll have to go to VA Beach for a few days to testify against William. His case has other victims now, as you know, and that's why the prosecutor needs you to testify there, and not here or on a video call. It's a big deal, and you'd have to stay there for his trial too, if and when it comes to it. In the meantime, we'd say you're consulting for the CIA. Half truths are easier to maintain than complete lies."
"I know. And, hum, talking about lies. Who has the clearance? I mean, who could I tell that I'm leaving for training?"
Nick looked at her, knowing why she asked. He sighed. "Since you're only leaving for training, and not going undercover, anyone from Bravo Team and their superiors have the clearance. And your father could be informed, of course". Dianna smiled and nodded, relieved.
But Nick hadn't finished. "But since you're a notorious interrogator, who has published material and gave interviews, and therefore considered a public figure, the CIA would consider you as someone acting undercover during your training, because if not, the press could easily find out where you are and who you work for, and they cannot risk it. No one here has the clearance for that, Dianna, only the Captain".
Her smile vanished. "So you're saying I couldn't tell anyone where I'm going and what I'm doing? Not even Davis and the team leader?"
"No, Dianna. Davis can't know. Hayes either".
"Here, Hayes". Blackburn threw a pile of papers, inside of a yellow folder at the bedside table, right next to Jason.
Jason looked up at him, a bit lost, because he was resting on his bed until the team received green light for a big op. "What is this? New intel?", he touched the folder.
"No. These are the forms that you and Dianna need to fill, sign and give back to me, as soon as possible".
Jason's face went white, and he glanced around. His teammates were nearby, and the bedroom door was wide open.
He tried to pretend he didn't know anything, and chuckled. "Look, sir, I don't know wha-"
"We're not blind, Hayes" Blackburn interrupted, crossing his arms. He was very annoyed, because he was being taken by a fool for too long. "And the truth is, we're not deaf either" he raised an eyebrow to Jason, who blushed.
Jason thought about explaining that the moaning and grunting they heard after Dianna's party was made by someone else, but maybe they didn't keep it too quiet on the other times, either. So he hesitated, and kept his mouth shut about that.
"Look, sir, even if that was the case, I don't know where this is going, and-"
"Well, figure it out. You're a big boy Hayes, I think it's about time you man up and talk about this with her. I want this signed by tomorrow night, do you understand?"
Jason watched, gobsmacked, as Blackburn left the bedroom, and as soon as he left, Jason received amused looks from Sonny, Clay and Full Metal. Ray gave him a stern look.
"Hi", Jason searched for Dianna in her bedroom, and she was sitting on her bed, looking at her phone. "Can I come in?"
"Yeah, sure", she put her phone down, glad to see him. The last time she saw him was at the Christmas Eve gathering, that didn't last too long because everyone was exhausted from the ops and interrogations. That was three days before, and the guys were sent off in ops a lot, and Dianna had several interrogations to attend. Neither of them had properly slept or eaten during the last days.
"Are you feeling better? From the buzzing noise?" she was worried because his ears weren't great since the explosion, and he had been suffering from headaches.
"Actually, yes. I just hope that nothing blows up next to me during this op today" he joked, but then he kept silent. He remembered of the tango who was wearing the suicide vest and almost killed him on Christmas Eve.
Dianna thought of that too. "Is it green lit?"
"Not yet. Waiting" Jason sat on the bed, gathering courage. He decided to just say it.
"Look… I don't know at what time we're going to leave or come back from the op, but I was thinking, if maybe, hum, you'd like to go out with me? Grab something to eat. Dinner tonight or lunch tomorrow, depending on the case" he smiled, nervous.
Dianna gazed at him and opened a wide and affectionate smile. "Sure, I'd love to".
Jason nodded, smiling. "Good. Good. Hum. We'll see when I go then. Or come back" he gestured, clumsily.
"Yes. We better do that" she chuckled., then she thought that maybe she should leave some hints to him in advance. "So, the prosecutor from Will's case just called me".
Jason's expression changed instantly. "Oh? Any news?"
"Actually, yes. I didn't tell you that, but other victims came forward against him when they knew about my case, and that he was imprisoned. The prosecutor, actually, took the statements of other people and found out the victim's names, and contacted them, and most of them agreed to press charges against him".
"Jesus, most of them? How many were there?" Jason was shocked.
"Three pressed charges, one didn't want to. And another one doesn't want to talk to the prosecutor" she stated.
Jason was indignant, that guy was really a shame for the Navy, DEVGRU, Echo, everybody really. "How the fuck is this guy still walking around breathing, huh?" he dangerously said. "Did he stalk the other women too?"
Dianna swallowed, she knew Jason wouldn't like to know the next information. "Yes, he stalked most of them. It seems he might have… sexually assaulted one of the girls, too".
Jason turned to face Dianna, and immediately came closer to her and held her hand. "You do realize that if this guy walks free he won't go far, right?" he promised, he wasn't asking for permission, and Dianna knew he meant it.
"That's why they called me. They need to take my statement in person, to guarantee they have a solid case. And if his case goes to trail, and it probably will, they'll need me to testify in the military court, too" she said.
Jason nodded. "Yes, of course".
"They need me to be there before the New Year's festivities, so they had it all set the first days of next year" she said, looking down.
"Oh" Jason took his hand off Dianna's. "I didn't know it'd be so soon" he felt miserable, because New Year would be in four days.
"Well, yeah, since he's imprisoned, things move a lot faster, you know".
"U-hum. So, you'd leave here, when? The 30th, something like that? Then you'd come back for New Year?" Jason was trying to do the math.
"Actually, I'd have to leave on the 29th, so I could give them my statement on the 30th. They don't work on the 31st." she said, now looking at him.
"Hum, u-hum, of course. You'd leave in two days then. Then come back on the first days of January", Jason looked at her.
Dianna licked her lips, because now is when she'd have to start lying to Jason. And she was hating it. "Yes, unless his trial is like, during the first weeks of January, I don't know, maybe they'd want me to stick around. They don't know yet, but they say these things go fast".
"Oh, yes, true. But maybe if the trial is like, during the first days of January, you'd be free to come back soon after that, right? So you wouldn't need to leave again soon" he was trying to see the positive side of the news.
"Right. U-hum" Dianna tried not to say too much, because she was looking at his cute face, very aware that she'd miss him during those months of training.
"Well, hey, one more reason for our dinner or lunch, then, right? In case you don't come back until New Year's, I'd only see you next year" he tried to joke, and softly chuckled.
Dianna opened a slight smile, because that would definitely be the last time she'd see him that year. "Yes… true" she just said.
Jason was fixing his hair with his fingers, looking in the bathroom mirror, trying to give it that 'something extra' that it always had. He checked out his stubble, he was letting it grow a little more, to a beard.
"Boss, you look amazing" Sonny mocked, coming closer, with Ray beside him. Ray glanced at the 'famous' relationship form from the Navy, that Jason had inside his bag.
"Going to make things official, Jace?" Ray asked, serious.
Jason grazed his beard with his fingers, smirking. "Yep. Time to sign the forms, guys".
"Haha boss, frogmen usually run from the yellow forms, and yet there you are, proudly bringing them to your woman" Sonny teased, but he was glad. He really liked Dianna.
"Yes I am. Talking about that, time to go have some lunch with my lady" Jason smirked, closing his bag and getting out of the bathroom to get Dianna.
"Did they allow you to take the car?" Dianna asked, suspicious, when Jason was parking at the restaurant he made reservations. It was a beautiful day, and she thought it was even better that they got to see each other during lunch, because the night before Jason got back almost at 9PM, and her interrogation lasted for a couple of hours, so they didn't go out and went to bed early, each in their own bed, that is. But now, they were rested and Jason would have to go on another op only that night or the next morning, and she'd leave the next morning too, so it was great that they could have all afternoon to themselves.
"Of course they allowed me" Jason said, indignant, "After all, what we're doing here is an essential field recognition, ma'am", he raised an eyebrow.
She chuckled, and they got into the restaurant, to have lunch on a patio with trees all around. It wasn't too cold, so Dianna wore another dress that she found at the same store in Belgrade, and it was similar to the burgundy one, but this one was black with some delicate flowers drawn all around the fabric. She only dabbed a bit of lipstick and let her hair down, naturally, straight and with waves in the end. That new shampoo she was wearing really was working perfectly.
They were having dessert, with Jason being a gentleman and looking amazing, as usual, and he started to get a little nervous, so Dianna asked him if there was something wrong.
"Hum, no, not really. I mean, actually, I got us a room in that hotel there" he pointed with his chin, "so, you know, we could… talk more privately".
Dianna smiled, she was very glad he did that. "U-hum. Good. Glad you did".
Jason paid for their lunch, of course, and Dianna was loving the fact that she was going out on an official date with Jason Hayes, and he held her hand in public when they walked to his car first. "I just… I brought some things" he explained, when he took out his small black bag, and she knew he maybe brought a change of clothes, toiletries, things like that.
They got into the room, glancing at each other, shyly, and she got in first. It was a really nice hotel room, and Dianna liked the room, it looked clean and with a pretty view. She turned around to see the window and heard Jason closing the door and putting his bag down, and she barely looked at him and he was already on her face, kissing her passionately, with his hands on her hair. Dianna moaned and pressed his shoulders, then Jason pushed her against a wall and moved his hands all over her body, and she was almost squirming with excitement. She hadn't had sex with him for a week, but it seemed a lot more, and for the way Jason was acting, Dianna actually thought that maybe he knew he wouldn't see her for months.
Jason knew he was acting kind of anxious, or maybe desperate, but he just needed to enjoy Dianna, and for the first time he had the time and privacy to take things slow. The thing is, he kind of forgot about that and advanced on her, so he restrained himself after a few minutes. He leaned his forearms on the wall, around her, so he could calm his heart.
He stopped kissing her and kept his forehead touching hers. "I'm sorry, I… Do you want to have something to drink? Or-"
Jason was deliciously interrupted by Dianna, who put her hands on his face and beard and kissed him passionately too, so he threw his idiot idea of taking things slow out the window. Dianna was eagerly trying to open his belt while they kissed, and Jason helped, opening his jeans and letting it drop to the floor. He raised her from her ass, and walked a few steps to the bed, with his pants all down, laying her in the middle of the bed.
Jason stood in front of her while he took off his jacket, his polo shirt and sneakers, shaking his pants off, and lowering his boxer briefs. He was already pulsating and he saw Dianna squirming while taking off her pretty dress and long boots, looking at him.
"Are you ready for me, Dianna?" Jason asked, because he was impatient, then she took off her delicate bra, and started to lower her panties.
"No" he gestured for her to stop, and she looked, serious. "Let me" he said, climbing on the bed. He began to take her delicate panties off, kissing her leg while doing so. He came back and opened her legs, licking her wet core a couple of times, but Dianna was moaning and he wouldn't last much if he continued, so he trailed kisses from her stomach to her breasts, making her moan again, and up her collarbone, neck and lips.
"God, you're beautiful" he said with a husky voice, looking at her face, and Dianna smiled and kissed his lips.
"Will you miss me, Jason?" she murmured, between kisses.
"U-hum, definitely" he murmured, kissing her and grazing the tip of his erection on her clit.
"No" she gasped with his touch, then held his face and waited until he looked into her eyes. "I mean… if I have to stay a little longer. Will you miss me?" she asked, with a shaky voice.
She knew she was walking a fine line there because she couldn't tell him anything, but she needed to know. And she meant to ask if he'd wait for her, and not just miss her. But she thought, if he missed her, it would be the same. It meant he'd want her.
Jason swallowed. He knew she was saying that maybe she'd have to stay longer in VA Beach, and he'd definitely miss her. He would prove that to her after fucking her a lot, when he would hand her the relationship forms.
"Yes. I'll miss you, a lot" Jason answered, kissing her softly with his eyes open.
Dianna opened a wide smile. "I'll miss you too".
Then he gave her one cute and charming smile and raised her legs, a lot, pushing inside of her, slowly, and feeling her tight walls welcoming him.
Dianna gasped and shivered, messing his hair, and Jason released a deep moan that he was about to muffle in her hair, but then he realized he didn't need to.
"Ah God" he loudly said, while he stayed inside of her for a few seconds, feeling her pulsate, and Dianna chuckled, because she also realized she didn't have to muffle any noise now.
He began to thrust slowly and deeply inside of Dianna, and she wrapped her legs around him, pressing hard on his lower back, so he would reach deep. She released a high-pitched moan and Jason grunted, feeling her pulsate. Then he remembered the night when a drop of tequila rolled down her mouth to her collarbone, and he kissed and licked her there, retracing the trajectory of that drop.
"You're so fucking delicious" he said, thrusting faster. "You and your tequilas" he said, barely making sense, but he couldn't help it, he was in a haze with her scent, warmth and wetness, feeling her wrapped all around him.
"And your fairy dresses" he continued, and Dianna was listening to it all, attentive as she was, but she had to giggle. He heard her giggle, and he bit her bottom lip, making her moan loudly, then he released it. "And your delicious lips", and now she wasn't giggling anymore, because she had a lump in her throat and was close to her climax already.
He saw her look and he unwrapped her legs, placing them on his broad shoulders, so he could reach her G spot at every thrust.
"And you walk around like a fucking russian in our military american base" he said, dangerously, thrusting harder, and she was panting and moaning. "I wanted to fuck you so bad, Dianna. So bad I had to yell at you" he confessed, with hunger in his eyes.
She heard all of that serious, and now it was her turn. "Well, and what about you, huh? Just walking around in fatigues, with gear and those huge guns" she was moving against him, and pulling and messing his hair while saying all of this to his face. "Jumping off helos like you're jumping into a pool" she continued, biting his chin, and he moved faster and harder, both of them grunting, "carrying me around like a laundry basket" she remembered the humiliation, and he chuckled, cockily.
"And cooking me an amazing breakfast" suddenly her face changed, and she had tears in her eyes, "giving me rides, paying for my food, and just… protecting me".
Jason had a lump in his throat, and he kissed her passionately, while moving even faster. He felt her walls twitching and stopped kissing her to watch her come, moaning loudly and contracting hard around his member, and he desperately thrust three more times and came too, grunting in her ear.
After Jason and Dianna recovered from their first incursion to the bed, they had time to enjoy the room once more, and they did it with enthusiasm. But Jason knew he might be called that evening for the op, and Blackburn wanted them all ready to leave as soon as possible, so they had to go back to the building.
But first, Jason had to talk to Dianna about the famous form. But he was gladly doing it, after all, she told him so many great things during sex, he was quite sure she'd want to be with him in an official relationship.
So after he helped her zip up her dress, kissing her neck while doing so, of course, he thought it was a good time to do that.
"So" he touched her waist, making her sit on a chair of the table of the hotel room, while she looked confused at him, "Blackburn came to me yesterday, because apparently he suspects about us" he said, chuckling, and she smiled, raising her shoulders. She knew they weren't exactly discreet with their flirting.
He opened his bag and put the yellow folder over the table, placing a pen over it, and sitting in front of her, on the other chair.
"So he asked for us to fill these and sign them, and he wants me to deliver them to him tonight".
"What are those?" Dianna asked, suspicious, but she was praying that they weren't something to make their relationship official. Because she knew they asked people to inform the Navy if someone was dating, but she imagined she'd do that when she'd come back from training. She would be out of the Navy during her training, she couldn't sign those papers. And the CIA definitely wouldn't let her, either.
"The famous 'relationship forms'. The one that the Seals usually run the crap out from", Jason joked.
She licked her lips, anxious. "Hum, they seem long. Maybe we could sign them when I come back".
His smiled toned down, he noticed she was being weird. "That's ok, we have time. And Blackburn asked them back tonight, he was pretty pissed already", he tried to sound casual, but he was feeling a lump in his throat growing, and it wasn't a good one.
She glanced to the form and to the sides, and didn't look at him. She decided to put the pressure on Jason, to see if he hesitated somehow.
"Well, it's a big step, right? I mean, we won't be seeing each other for a few… weeks, probably, so I don't think there's any rush, right?"
His smile now completely vanished and he felt his heart racing, and again, not in a good way.
"No, there's not any rush, Dianna, but also there's no reason why we can't just sign them now, so when you come back I can fuck you anytime I want" Jason was being aggressive to disguise the fact that he could almost hear his heart break.
Dianna knew that his aggressive reaction was because he was very hurt and she also hurt his pride, but she didn't know what else to do. She could only drag this if they fought, so that's what she did.
"Well, what a gentleman you are, that you are just wanting me to sign these so you can fuck me, huh".
But instead of yelling with her, Jason acted in a way that Dianna didn't expect, and it only made things harder for her.
"Look. No. I'm sorry. You know I didn't mean it. What I really meant is, that I want to have you with me, and not have to hide. We could go out on dates, and share a bedroom, and of course, the sex would be a plus" he desperately was trying to convince her of the pros of dating him officially, and he felt like a romantic fool for having to convince her of that. But he knew she was independent and never dated co-workers, so he had to try.
Dianna was desperate now, because she knew the only way out of it would be breaking his heart, because he'd think she didn't want him as much as he did.
"Look, I know it has many pros, and I really, really, like you Jason, I just don't think it's still the right time for us to make it official. You know? When I come back, we can discuss it again, is that ok?" she said, with a slight smile but with tears in her eyes, getting up from the chair.
Jason's face wasn't hiding how miserable he was feeling.
"Hum. Ok. Sure. I didn't mean to pressure you. We'll talk when you come back" he got up and was about to put the yellow fold in his bag, but suddenly he imagined how humiliating it would be to tell Blackburn that she didn't sign it because she wanted to think about it, or the team guys would be feeling sorry for him, and soon everyone would know that she didn't want to make it official. Because he had already filled and signed the forms, the only thing that was missing was Dianna's information and signature.
"You know what" he raised his voice, and she turned to him, in the middle of the bedroom, alarmed.
"We can't just linger this thing on. We went on a date today. Everyone knows. The Navy won't like that we keep hiding this from them. And Blackburn was very specific" he came closer to her, gesticulating with the folder "that he wants this signed, in his hands, tonight".
Dianna crossed her arms. "Well, I'm sorry, but they'll have to understand. They can't pressure me".
Jason stared with a hurt face. "But if we can't hide it from them, we need to break up Dianna" he gave her an ultimatum, and just by doing that he felt like the biggest loser ever.
She had tears in her eyes. "Well, can't we just, I don't know, not talk for a while? To pretend, for them?" she came closer to him, desperate.
"What? And do all of this, just because you can't sign a fucking piece of paper? Is that so hard for you?" Jason was indignant.
"Please Jason, trust me, I can't sign them now. I just can't" she came closer to him and held his polo shirt, in the sexy way he usually loved, but this time it only hurt him more, because now he felt that she was manipulating him. He felt like she was leading him on, like those idiot men do to their girlfriends, who refuse to marry them for years. And Jason wasn't like that, at all; he knew he wanted to marry Alana when he was still a teenager, and he knew he wanted Dianna; so he thought that Dianna would already know if she wanted to have a serious relationship with him by now.
"We've been through a lot already. And if you still don't know by now if you want something more with me, then it means that you don't" he stated, with tears in his eyes.
A tear rolled down her face. "I want Jason, seriously, I just can't sign the form. Believe me".
He wasn't buying it. "You can't? How is it that you can't, huh? You can't, or you don't want to; either way it means that you won't. Or will you?" he handed her the folder that was in his hand this whole time.
She hesitated, with another tear rolling down her face. "I won't. Sorry".
He nodded, with his eyes filled with tears, and he silently threw the folder in his bag, grabbed the bag aggressively and walked to the door. "Then let's go back. I'm still a good guy, I'll take you back", he said, sarcastically.
Dianna followed him, silently, with tears still rolling down her face, and kept quiet until they got to the garage of the building. They didn't spoke a word, but she knew if he went out for a long op, she wouldn't see him again for months. So she had to try one last time.
She held his forearm when he was about to open his door.
"Jason. You know me. You really do. I really want to be with you. Please, just believe me, I can't sign the papers. I don't want to leave with you being mad at me. Just… please".
He listened to it without looking at her, and her rejection was hurting him deeply. But she sounded sincere, so Jason thought that maybe something else happened, some trauma or whatever, and she couldn't talk about that now. So he decided to give her the benefit of the doubt.
He turned to look at her, and her face was wet with tears. "I don't know, Dianna. I'll have to think. I just… I don't know" he mumbled, and quickly got out of the car.
And Dianna silently followed him to the stairs, trying to dry the tears that kept rolling down her face.
Jason and the entire team got up early, at 8AM, even though they got back from their op after 1AM, because everyone wanted to say goodbye to Dianna, just in case she'd only come back middle January, which apparently, for what she was saying, was pretty much a certain thing. They had spent more than that time apart before, but now everyone had bonded more, and now Jason was obviously completely into Dianna.
When Jason came back from the hotel, he avoided the team guys, and when they saw him all grumpy they knew she didn't want to sign the form. Everyone felt sorry for him, and kept saying that it would all work out, and he just kept feeling more humiliated by the minute.
Unaware of that, Blackburn came to his bedroom to ask for the signed forms, and Jason said that they decided to take a break until she came back, and when he asked for the forms back, even if they were blank, because they had the Navy's symbol, Jason had to hand them to Blackburn, with his signature on them. He almost lied to him and said that he destroyed them, but Blackburn would know why they were destroyed anyways. So once more, Jason felt ridiculous and humiliated when Blackburn saw his signature on the forms, and not Dianna's.
But at the same time, he kept thinking about what Dianna said to him in the car, and how he should believe her, and he was feeling that maybe, just maybe, there was really something keeping her from signing the papers, at least for now.
So after Dianna hugged everyone, even crying when she hugged some of the guys and Davis, Jason waited for her a bit away from everyone, so he could say goodbye to her in a more private way. He was still hurt, but he wanted to believe her.
"Hey" Dianna came closer, and Jason had his hands on the pockets of his pants. He just nodded. "Look, I really am sorry about the forms thing. And I'm really asking you a lot, but I need you to trust me on this, ok? Just… don't think too much about this right now, ok? Remember about… the good time we had yesterday. I know I will." she smiled at him, affectionate, with tears in her eyes.
Jason looked down, trying to avoid tears, but they were of hurt. "I'll try. To believe you, ok. But you have to promise me to tell everything when you come back" he asked, looking at her.
He noticed she hesitated, again, and he felt like something punched him in the face.
"Ok. We'll talk. When I come back", she said with a slight smile, and Jason didn't move.
She got into her toes and kissed his cheek, touching his chest with her hand, and Jason could only close his eyes.
"Bye, Jason" she whispered to him, turning around and going out with Nick, who was waiting for her at the exit. And Jason kept quiet while he watched her leave.
Dianna was in the plane, sad because of having to say goodbye to everyone, and Nick was next to her, trying to cheer her up. He kept talking about the CIA and their training, saying she'd definitely pass all courses, especially because since she wouldn't want to be an agent, for now, she wouldn't have to take the most physical courses and tests. Nick guaranteed her that she'd pass the other trainings, including the one for torture, because she handled herself amazingly under pressure.
She looked out the window of the plane, thinking about it all, and reminded her that it was her dream, to work with the CIA. She could access intel from all over the world and pick the most challenging cases, and work with Bravo, and work in other cases when Bravo didn't need an interrogator.
And her training would be shorter, since she wouldn't be an agent. What could 4 or 5 months do to her bond with the team? And Jason? She knew that she had something especial with all the guys, and with Davis, and with Jason. She sighed. Time would fly by, she knew it. She'd be very busy and almost out of reach for the next months, but she was finally getting excited about things. She turned and smiled to Nick, thanking him for all his support.
Jason continued grumpy when it was January 2nd and he hadn't heard from Dianna. He obviously didn't reach out to her, but she texted Davis on New Year's Eve and let her know that they took her statement and that she was waiting, probably his trial would start in the next few weeks, so she'd stay at the States during those days. And she also mentioned that she was applying to consult for the CIA during that period, because she'd need the money, and he hoped she could get that job. But Jason was extremely anxious to find out when she'd be back, because he needed to know if she'd finally be official about him.
Jason was searching for his jacket in the bag and in his locker, and he couldn't find it, and Ray came closer to him when he saw Jason being aggressive for no reason at all.
"Still no word from Dianna?" He asked, stern.
"No Ray, still no word, ok. But I didn't ask anything to her. Let her be. She told Davis everything's fine there" Jason grumpily answered, messing his drawers.
"Jace" Ray called him, stern, and Jason turned. "I have to tell you something. That I saw. I didn't know if I should tell you or not, because I thought that when you guys had lunch you'd work things out. But seeing you being led on by her like this is driving me nuts, man".
"What? What do you mean? What did you see?" Jason asked, confused and serious.
Ray glanced to the sides, to make sure they were alone in the room.
"One day, I was walking near the balcony, and I saw Dianna there. With Nick" he stated, and Jason swallowed, crossing his arms. Ray leaned on a locker.
"I couldn't hear all their conversation, but he was coming really close to her, like… intimate" Jason's face was of pain, but Ray continued, "and he told her that she should decide. Between him or you. That he couldn't wait forever for her. She said she couldn't decide anything about that, at that moment, that she was busy with interrogations, but he insisted. And touched her arm, coming closer. And they kept whispering, for a while. When I left, they were still talking. This was right after Christmas. I'm sorry, man".
Jason was paralyzed and his eyes filled with tears, of sadness and of anger. He instantly remembered that Nick went to the States with her, using some lame excuse.
"But Davis said that Nick will come back in a couple of days, and he'll help Bravo while Dianna doesn't come back" Jason could only say, in a haze.
"I know. I'm not saying that she chose him. Maybe she couldn't decide, or manipulated you both, I don't know. I just didn't think it was ok that she kept lying to you like that", Ray stated.
Jason nodded. He really was manipulated. Led on. And humiliated. He obviously was falling in love with a woman he didn't know, at all. He decided to not reach out to her, and wait to see what she'd do. He owed her nothing, and she toyed with him and rejected him, after everything he had done for her, and everything they had been through.
He was hurt, and devastated, and he promised himself that he'd never be used like that again. He deserved someone who truly wanted him.
