CAMPION AND AMANDA
Amanda knew him better than anyone, except maybe Lugg. Sometimes she could read his mind, but not now; his mind was clicking through fog but she couldn't even read that. She turned to someone else whose mind was clicking like a rattlesnake.
Campion knew her not at all, despite her openness. He'd known her since her last moments of childhood; he'd waited and now she'd stopped waiting. He pushed his mind. It hurt. He pushed until he recovered himself, and in so doing, recovered Amanda, who thus recovered his clicking mind (not snakelike but quirkily unique) and his never-faltering heart.
