"I won't be too heavy?" Miguel helped, or at least attempted to help, his granddad untie the boat from the dock.

"These boats can hold half a ton, I doubt you'll be too heavy," Rob set the rope aside as Miles rushed into the boat.

"Ok," he looked about for Virgil, "I'll be back."

He hurried in to see if daddy had overslept. He highly doubted that Jason was going to join them, he didn't seem too interested in fishing yesterday. Though, to be fair, Miguel wasn't either due to being sleepy.

Virgil was awake, and getting dressed, but not to chill out on a boat on the lake. He was throwing on his jogging shorts and shirt, "You about ready?" he called to the Wayne kids.

"I am," Jason hurried over, "Let's go, nerd."

Tim grumbled. Virgil had done an efficient job at hiding his laptop last night so he, unfortunately, had to take a break. Now he was refusing to give it to him unless he went on a jog, hike, or fished.

"Daddy," Mig gently tugged Virgil's shirt, "Are you going fishing?"

"Not this morning, I'm going to go on a jog with those two."

2099's expression dropped, "But…I want to fish this morning.

"You can go fish with Pops, honey. I just want to go run."

"But…" he sulked.

"We can still go for a hike today," V reassured, reaching up and cupping his boy's chin, "You go hang out with Pops, ok? I'm about to make Tim do something other than looking at a screen. And give Jason a little time. You know he isn't good with patience, so fishing is going to make him angry."

Mig leaned into the touch.

"If there is any danger I have that psychopath to protect me," he teased.

"I'm not a psychopath," Jason snorted, "You go off and enjoy your old man sport while I kidnap your dad," he shooed Mig, pulling Virgil close just to tease him further.

2099 glared, "Go enjoy your run, I'll deal with you later."

"Ohh, I'm shaking in my boots," he stuck his tongue out, getting the same gesture returned before his friend happily skipped off to hang with the other guys.

"Alright, brat, let's go," V shook his head as Tim followed him to the door.

Jay panted, drinking his water.

"How you doing over there?" V wiped his forehead.

He gave him a thumbs up, "I'm just dandy. How about you?"

V leaned against a tree, glancing over at Tim inspecting the foliage and typing away on his watch, "I can't complain. Are you having fun?"

"So much! I got a new person to fight, and I get to be out in the forest. I don't really like the fishing, but I guess I like the lake, it's pretty cool."

Jason just took off at the mouth. Virgil nodded, listening to everything the man said. Talking about how he wanted to go on another camping trip again soon, one where he could hunt. And talking about how he enjoys the small trips. He even let it slip that he wished Bruce had actually come, but also admitted that he didn't really bother inviting him.

"When we come next time it'll be longer so I can teach you how to use a gun properly and shoot," Jason laughed, "And then we can clean our venison and eat like they did back in the good ole days!"

"Yep, the good ole days of the Oregon trail," Virgil joked, "I gotta tell you, I always hoped to die of dysentery. But I think I'll pass on the hunting and that stuff. I like my meat already dehumanized and looking nothing like what it looks like while living."

"Aww, c'mon, you don't want to enjoy fresh gizzards?"

"You registered Miles and I were playing speed while y'all gut some fish. What makes you think I can stomach disemboweling a deer?" he shuddered, "That might push me to being a pescatarian or something."

Jay tsked, shaking his head, "Shameful."

"Just a little," V laughed, "You ready Tim, I'm only doing fifteen miles then we're heading back and you can have your computer."

"Is that all? Let's go," the young man rushed off without another word.

"Hope you know how much I hate you," Jefferson glared at Virgil, "Don't make any d mn sense."

"What? It's healthy, mostly," V smirked, biting into his banana bread.

"I hate you and every fiber of your being," Jeff grabbed another slice, spreading the butter on it with disdain.

"In my defense, Jess made this."

"I think its good," Miles sipped his chocolate milk, "Can I make french toast in the morning, please?"

Jeff groaned. They were intent on making his back big.

Rob chuckled to himself, "How was the run? Still going to have energy for a hike?"

"Oh absolutely," V scoffed, "You stay here if you're feeling tired, pops. I'm sure Jeff will join you. Probably play jim rummy or something."

"I'm better rested today, I can outpace you."

"Put your money where your mouth is."

Jeff smirked, "Bet."

X

"You ok dad?" Miles watched as his father wiped the sweat from his brow.

"I'm doing better than ok, I'm just great," he would not admit anything.

"Want some more water?" Virgil's grin taunted the man.

Jeff glared, wiped the sweat from his brow, "Nope, I'm doing great. Come on, why are we taking so long? Did your legs get tired?"

V shrugged, "Ok kids, you heard the man. He said he wanted to go another mile."

The sounds of the little trio playing loudly on the trail mostly covered over Jeffereson's wheezing and dying. He chugged the bottle of water and nearly choked.

"You're gonna make yourself sick, big dog," V sat next to him.

"How many miles have we traveled? 8? 10?" he panted, coughing into his towel.

"Dude, it's been like 3 miles," he chuckled, "Ok, I'm taking you back before you hurt yourself."

"No! I'm fine," he coughed again.

"Kids!" V called, "Can I trust you guys to find your way back?"

J glanced over, barely having heard him.

"Yeah!" Miles called, "Is dad ok?"

"Your dad is about to pass out, I'm taking him back."

"I'm perfectly- PUT ME DOWN!"

"I'm gonna take the old man home to chill with the other old man," Virgil closed one eye as Jefferson pushed his face and chest, trying to be put back on the ground.

"Ok, bye dad," the teen waved as his uncle flew away, with his dad, "Think we can find a bear, or wolves?"

"Oh I guarantee," Jason tossed a smug grin.

Rob looked over, hearing the commotion, "Short hike. Get tired?"

"He doesn't want to admit he's tired," Virgil let his friend go, getting a glare.

"I'll have you know I was fine! Your son is just a worrier," the chief stalked off to the kitchen to grab a drink.

"Hmm, ok," the older man shrugged, chuckling to himself as he read.

"If I wanted to fly I would have taken a plane," Jeff complained.

"Nag, nag, nag. What a way to say 'thank you for not letting my child see me pass out on the path'."

"I was not about to pass out!" He sneered, tossing a pillow at him.

Rob glanced above his kindle as the two bickered. A smile crested his face as he proceeded with his reading, "The kids know their way back right?"

"Yea," V threw the pillow back, "if they aren't back in an hour I'll grab them."
