Chapter 19: Last 16

"It's time for the first round of the finals for the 1st years Sports Festival!" Present Mic said as the crowd cheered and Midoriya and Shinso walked up the steps to the battlefield. "Let's get this started!"

Marinette, Adrien, Ida, Uraraka and all of their class minus Sero and Todoroki who were up next and thus in waiting rooms on the field level were in the special box for Class 1-A in the student's section of the stadium. They were looking down on the battlefield that had been made for this match ready to see how the first one played out.

The battlefield itself was simple. In the middle of the stadium on the ground that they had had the Cavalry Battle on was a two-tiered concrete battlefield. There were steps up to the lower level where there were two U.A. logos at the midpoints and flames from the corners for some reasons though no one had seen them being installed.

Then it was up another set of steps to the battlefield that was a light concrete rectangle with white borderlines and a dark concrete border to have something between the edge and the out of bounds line. It was just like the one that Cementoss had made for Marinette and Momo to spar in when they were preparing for this competition only this one was raised and much more official looking.

Cementoss himself sat in a concrete throne at the midpoint of the battlefield on the lower level clearly ready to act if need be and handle repairs should it get damaged while Midnight stood opposite him. The R Rated Hero stood on a raised platform on the grass where she'd officiate the battle and determine the winner and loser of each one. It was all official and looked good.

"This first match is a great start to this round." Present Mic said as the crowd cheered. "On one side, from the Hero Course, it's one of the leaders of the festival so far, Izuku Midoriya! Against him it's the biggest surprise so far, from General Studies Class C, it's Hitoshi Shinso!"

"Midoriya had better not mess this up." Adrien said from their group in the front row. "He knows what he needs to do."

"What do you mean?" Ojiro asked leaning forward to join in from the row behind.

"You'll see." Adrien said not wanting to give anything away as he stared intently at the battlefield before him.

"Begin." Present Mic said.

As soon as he said it Midoriya charged Shinso. While they were too far, and the crowd too loud, for them to hear from where they were, they could see that Shinso was shouting something at Midoriya as he ran at him. It looked like Midoriya wasn't responding, which was good, that was until Shinso said something that clearly got a reaction and Midoriya yelled back at him and suddenly stopped. As soon as that happened Adrien face-palmed at his friend's stupidity. This was not good for Midoriya.

"What just happened?" Uraraka asked shock.

"Well, that was unexpected." Present Mic commentated. "Hold on, what's going on now?"

Midoriya had turned and was now walking to back the way he came at a slow but steady pace. He had a zombified look on his face as he walked his way to the edge of the battlefield where he'd be out. Whatever Shinso's Quirk was it gave him some control over his opponent.

"What's going on is the flaw in our entry system." Aizawa said from next to Present Mic and into the commentary system so that everyone could hear. "Shinso has a Quirk that is strong and worthy of the Hero Course but our testing system doesn't take into account a Quirk that can't work on robots like Shinso's so he naturally failed the Hero Course entrance exam but also applied to the General Studies program and is now using the Sports Festival to show us what he can do."

"Brainwashing." Marinette said as they stared in horror at Midoriya walking out and Present Mic made some response to Aizawa in the booth. "That's what Shinso's Quirk is called. It allows him to take control of another human by talking to them and hearing their response to his voice, but he needs to actively engage it for it to work. Naturally it doesn't work on robots so he was doomed in the exam, but he should be here with us in the Hero Course."

"How did you know?" Ida asked Marinette surprised that she knew what the General Studies student's Quirk was.

"The class registry at U.A. that we all have access to." Marinette said simply. "Has all our pictures and Quirks, even those not in the Hero Course, in it so I just checked it after he challenged us, as well as all of Class B, while preparing to make sure I knew what to expect from those not in our class."

"Clever." Ojiro said impressed by the French girl's forethought and realizing that he should probably do something similar in the future. "Can Midoriya break it?"

"Don't know." Adrien said. "I told him about Shinso's Quirk, but I didn't understand it and we never saw how it can be overcome but it can't be much to break it. That said, there is nothing that seems to be able to do it on a battlefield like the one we're using for this competition."

"Well, if Deku doesn't do anything he'll be out." Uraraka said nervously. "He can't be knocked out this early."

They all agreed but all they could do was watch as Midoriya neared the edge the battlefield and waited for the inevitable. However, just as he was about to walk out, a blast of air shot down from his left hand causing everyone to gasp and Midoriya to stop dead in his tracks. Looking down they could see that he'd broke two fingers on his left hand to break Shinso's control just int time as he was right at the white line.

"What's this, Midoriya has stopped." Present Mic said as Shinso began yelling at him, but Midoriya backed up, turned and ran full speed at Shinso clearly no longer under Shinso's control. "And now he's on the offensive."

"He's won." Adrien said simply as Midoriya reached Shinso without saying anything and began pushing him back to the edge using his raw strength and not his Quirk to do so while keeping his broken fingers free. "He's too determined after that near loss not to and he knows what Shinso's Quirk can do now, he won't fall for it again."

The others just nodded in agreement as they watched Midoriya rush Shinso back as Shinso yelled and started punching Midoriya in the side. It was not working as Midoriya neared the edge before stopping and throwing Shinso over the edge so that his legs were out as he hit the ground hard.

"Shinso is out!" Present Mic said loudly as the crowd roared. "Midoriya advances."

The bracket on the scoreboard showed Midoriya's advancement to the quarter finals as Shinso's name turned from black to gray on it. He then helped a reluctant Shinso up and had some words with him which led to him being brainwashed again. Shinso chuckled as he let it drop and walked off to rejoin his class, calling out to Midoriya again which Midoriya responded to and got brainwashed again causing everyone to grown at that.

Class C was a few boxes over though and they could hear them shouting down to Shinso how proud they were of him while many pros in attendance commented on his potential and how it was a shame that he wasn't in the Hero Course. It was clear he'd made an impression and by coming in the top 16 he'd outperformed all other General Studies students and 28 from the Hero Course. There was no way he'd not be considered for one of the transfer spots after that showing.

"Midoriya needs to learn some spatial awareness and to remember that a situation isn't over until it is over." Marinette said as she rose. "But that was well done and a relief that he made it. Time for me to get ready."

"Good luck bugaboo, I'll be rooting for you." Adrien said. "I expect to see you in the final."

"I'm sure the others will have something to say about that, but I expect the same kitty." Marinette called out as she left. "I want to beat you for the title after all."

"What's with the cute nicknames you two keep using?" Uraraka asked as Midoriya walked off a little confused, she was looking forward to Deku returning so she could congratulate him, but he needed to get his fingers looked at first. "I've been meaning to ask about them because I don't get them."

"You will in time." Adrien said with a grin. "They're from our last school but we can show why soon enough."

"It's not the priority now." Ida said as Sero and Todoroki walked out to Present Mic's intros for them. "Let's see who Midoriya will face next."

It was clear who it was going to be, but they didn't say anything as the battle began. Most of them still had to focus after all.

Marinette had barely made it to her assigned waiting room when she felt a chill run through the whole stadium. That could only mean one thing, Todoroki had gone all out in his battle with Sero and probably a little overboard in the process.

"And with that the battle is over." Present Mic's voice said through the speaker system though she could hear the Voice Hero's teeth chattering as he spoke. "Sero can't move, and Todoroki has literally frozen half the stadium. We are going to take a quick break as we melt that ice and clean thing up."

"He lost control for some reason." Aizawa's voice said. "He can't afford to do that in the real world for a number of reasons."

Marinette had no idea what was going on and decided to just leave it for now. She'd get the story later when she returned, she just had to wait for a little longer now as there was some cleanup. She expected that though with Todoroki's Quirk. It meant that she'd be able to watch his match with Midoriya if she advanced, that one had a 0% chance of not being destructive.

It took a good 10 minutes for the ice to be melted as Marinette sat in her waiting room getting in the zone. Kaminari was a straight forward opponent to face for her. This was going to be easy and as soon as an attendant came in to let her know that it was time she was already set with what she had to do to win. It was time to begin to show what she could really do.

"Alright folks, the ice has been cleared and we can continue with the battles." Present Mic said as Marinette and Kaminari entered the arena and ascended the steps. "On one side we have one of the special French exchange students this year, the first time in years that the prestigious Francois Dupont High School as sent some of their students to U.A. and both have advanced to this stage. First up, from the Hero Course, it's the mistress of luck herself, Marinette Dupain-Cheng."

There were cheers from the crowd as she reached the battlefield and stepped onto it smiling at Kaminari as he took his spot across from her. He looked a little nervous after his earlier trick, but he was ready as well it seemed.

"Facing her is her electrifying classmate, also from the Hero Course, it's Denki Kaminari!" Present Mic said.

"Don't worry, I won't treat you the way I did Mineta back in the battle trial." Marinette said with a grin that did not settle Kaminari in the slightest. "But no one will forget this."

"Oh, they won't, especially when I beat you." Kaminari said finding his confidence to face Dupain-Cheng, he wasn't going to let her get into his head. "I would ask you out, but you have a boyfriend, so I'll have to settle for never forgetting that cheerleading outfit."

"And the world won't forget this." Marinette said as she set herself.

"Begin!" Present Mic said.

"Get ready." Kaminari said as he sparked with electricity, he knew that his only way to win was an all-out attack right at the start and shock Dupain-Cheng into unconsciousness. "Indiscriminate 1.3 million volts!"

Marinette just sighed as she crouched down and raised a hand as soon as the battle began while activating her Quirk at the same time. Right above her there was a flash of pink and a large, heavy, insulation blanket appeared with a U.A. sports kit print on it and fell down on top of Marinette just as Kaminari was unleashing his bolts. All she had to do was wait for the bolts to pass harmlessly around and over her.

"What is going on?" Present Mic commentated. "Is it over?"

"Dupain-Cheng's Quirk allows her to create an item that she needs to accomplish a task she has in mind, but she has no say in what it is." Aizawa said simply and feeling like he was repeating himself. "Here she needed something to counter electricity. This was a mismatch from the start with the way Kaminari fights and Dupain-Cheng would know that. He could have done better but he needs to learn tactics first, that's why he lost."

"Huh, it's no wonder she's considered a recommended student." Present Mic said clearly not getting all of that.

Marinette took that as the moment to get up and dismiss the insulating blanket to see what had happened. She was pretty sure that this was what she'd get, after Adrien had confirmed how Momo had countered Kaminari's Quirk during the USJ incident this was all she could think about, and it had worked perfectly. Kaminari was now standing where he had been in his stupid state making a thumbs up sign, drooling and making a strange noise. Marinette grinned, it was time for revenge.

"Come on, let's get you out of here you poor baby." Marinette said as she walked up to Kaminari and then with ease picked him up princess style and began walking towards the far edge as cameras flashed. "Enjoy this, it will be all over the internet in moments."

Marinette made sure to look up to her classmates to see all the girls on their feet cheering her and taking pictures, especially Jiro who was clearly loving it and waiving at her with a wide grin on her face and her phone out. Marinette had gotten them revenge and made sure that Kaminari would never live this down.

In order to ensure that she didn't make a mistake, Marinette laid Kaminari on the ground just before the line and then with her shoe she rolled him over so that he crossed the line with his left arm and shoulder. She'd won and advanced to the next round.

"Kaminari is out, Dupain-Cheng is the winner." Midnight said with a flick of her flail.

"Woah she countered him really fast." Someone in the crowd said as Marinette walked off while the anti-human robots came to collect Kaminari.

"Real potential there, strong Quirk and brain to match it." Another said. "Let's see how she does in the next round though."

"It's hard when someone cancels out your Quirk, but you could have put up an actual fight." A robot said as the pair stretched Kaminari off. "Pathetic."

"Humans, they are inferior after all." The other robot said. "Especially this one."

Marinette didn't care as she hurried to rejoin her friends and see who would win between Ida and Hatsume. That would be her next opponent, so she'd need to be ready for whoever won one of the more interesting matchups of the opening round of the tournament.

"I didn't expect it to be that quick but then again Dupain-Cheng is a recommended student, or at least equal to them." Izuku muttered as he scrawled in his notebook in the aftermath of the battle. "And her strength is not to be taken lightly as she didn't even struggle to lift Kaminari. She's a lot better than I had expected, a real challenge should I…"

"Deku, your muttering again." Uraraka said softly from his side, she didn't mind it at all though the others were annoyed and Bakugo looked like he was about to explode, literally.

"What oh sorry I didn't see Dupain-Cheng in battle before, so this was a good chance to really study her." Izuku said embarrassed. "I don't get this chance often so I couldn't resist. I've made notes on all the Quirks in our class in fact. Do you want to see what I have on your Zero Gravity?"

He held out his notebook to his pages on Uraraka which included a good drawing of her in her hero costume. She blanched at that though she was also touched at that. Still, it was a bit much to take in all of a sudden.

"You know that's what I've always admired about you, Deku." Uraraka said kindly once she'd recovered and felt her heart skip a beat at the idea of Deku paying so much attention to her. "Your dedication."

"Well, we are giving it our all so it's the least I can do." Izuku said.

"Well said." Marinette said as she rejoined them, getting high fives from the girls while Mineta cringed in fear, he'd seen how Kaminari had been embarrassed in front of the whole world and he was likely next whenever the crazy French chick got a chance, and he didn't want to face her again. "We should all keep that in mind, this is a great chance to see how the others are fighting and should focus on that."

"Oh, hey Dupain-Cheng, that was great." Uraraka said as Marinette took a seat next to Adrien. "You really got Kaminari there."

"It wasn't too hard, and he deserved that." Marinette said with a shrug. "But that was a mismatch, the next one I face will be harder and it's time to see. Let's see who wins between the Hero and Support Courses."

"Ok folks its time for the fourth match of the first round." Present Mic said as Ida and Hatsume walked out. "From the hero course it's the kid with engines in his legs, Tenya Ida. Against him, it's a gadget covered girl from the Support Course, Mei Hatsume."

"Um what is Ida wearing?" Adrien asked as suddenly Ida had equipment on his body that Midnight called out. "That can't be allowed, can it?"

"I think Hatsume gave it to him." Izuku said nervously as he saw her smirk and noticed a mic at her mouth. "And I don't think this is for his sake or to be even like Ida no doubt believes it to be."

"Then this should be interesting." Marinette said not knowing a thing about the Support Course girl but looking closely. "Right?"

"I barely know Hatsume but she's not exactly someone who would do something selflessly." Izuku said. "She only joined me because I was in the lead and thus all eyes would be on me, so I was the best advertisement for her babies."

"Poor Ida." Uraraka said as Midnight allowed it with an inappropriate squeal at Ida's nobility that made many people uncomfortable. "He doesn't know what he's in for, does he?"

"Not at all." Izuku said as he braced himself. "This will not be pretty and likely make almost no sense."

"Begin." Present Mic said and almost at once they heard Hatsume's voice and knew that this was going to be different.

They were in for something that no one had expected to see today. It was time for an impromptu support gear infomercial courtesy of Mei Hatsume and her unwilling assistant Tenya Ida.

"How's it looking." A voice said in British accent English with a strange metallic twang to it. "Sorry I'm late, I came as soon as I could, and it seems like I was just in time."

"Technus, this is a surprise." Mage said in English from his seat in the front row of the Guardian's box were he was currently alone with only Tikki and Plagg though other Guardians, Kwamis, and Demos, had been in and out all Festival and he knew the big man himself was on his way at some point. "Usually, you don't bother with these things."

"Yo Technus what up, long time no see." Plagg said as he sipped a drink of sake that Vina, the Alcohol Guardian had provided him when she showed up for a bit during the Cavalry Battle. "How's it hanging your old cyborg?"

"Plagg, what an expected surprise to find you here and drinking sake, you always did enjoy going native with your alcohol choices." Technus said with a smile as he sat down in the front row leaving a seat between himself and Mage. "I believe you still owe me a fair bit from your Paris days and even more from the centuries prior. Good to see you and Tikki again after so long, glad to see you are ok."

"It was an ordeal and adjustment, but we've spent longer inactive in the Miraculous Box, so it wasn't too bad." Tikki said. "And our brother and sister kwamis helped us a lot. It's more our humans and their adjustment that I was worried about."

"Yes how is that going?" Technus asked as the wall of ice suddenly obscured their view, he'd come during Todoroki's battle, so he was still a battle away from the one he really wanted to watch. "I haven't been reading your recent reports Mage."

"Good, I altered their DNA to fit with the Quirk society we live in and gave them their Miraculous powers as their Quirks." Mage explained as he looked over to his fellow Guardian. "And also gave them the knowledge of modern Japanese to help them get by. After that it was telling them the situation and giving them the choice, which they chose the way I knew they would. I hope you don't mind that we are using your name for their costumes."

"No, I approved it after all, and I do actually make costumes like that." Technus said. "Demos was the one who told me about it a few years back and what I should consider looking into just in case, you know how that old fixer is. Besides, Nanotech is child's play for me, so it was simple for me to make what was needed and aid in the cover for them. Of course, you owe me a favor for my role so expect me to call that in at some point."

"Well, you are the Guardian of Technology and the illegitimate son of Hephaestus and Athena, this is nothing for you." Mage said nodding at the favor part, he knew he'd owe Technus one and fully intended to pay up when the time came. "Your skills are well known, I just mimicked it and your European contacts are such that they can be believed."

"All part of the plan that I got roped into, but it was our fuck up that caused this, so we owe them." Technus said as the ice began to melt. "You most of all but a mistake by one Guardian is a mistake by all of us to some extent. Good to see they are truly worthy."

"Fu was a great man and a wise judge of character." Mage said as Tikki and Plagg nodded in agreement. "Anyway, why are you here? Shouldn't you be in Europe."

"My main consciousness is back in my home base in London, but I couldn't resist this once I got news of the Cavalry Battle results." Technus said. "It's been a decade since a first-year Support Course student made it to the final event of the U.A. Sports Festival, that takes a level of skill to produce enough gear to achieve that which means that the talent is likely a generational one, so I had to scout her out. Usually at least the top Support Course kid from the other years gets this far as he or she has had time to perfect their work and analyze the Hero Course but seldom does a first year."

"She's a character for sure." Mage said. "I've noticed her throughout this Festival, and she's been impressive. She's fourth up so soon and you can see her for yourself."

"Good, I am here just in time then." Technus said stretching out and relaxing in his seat. "But I can only stay long enough to see her then I have to get going. Business calls after all and unlike you I'm not required to be in Japan."

"Understandable." Mage said as he looked to his brother Guardian. "Always a pleasure to have company from a fellow anglophile."

Technus, like Mage, wore the standard Guardian outfit of blue jeans and a plain, single colored, t-shirt with a hooded cape the same color as his shirt. For Technus, his chosen color was a coppery bronze color and seemed to shimmer a little like it. Unlike Mage who favored sneakers, Technus wore standard black work boots as his footwear of choice.

Though Mage couldn't see it, he knew that the complicated staff like weapon that was a high-tech multipurpose thing at the end that Technus had created for his personal weapon was at the base of his back. Finally, on his right thigh, was his Guardian Knife that they all had, the handle of which was a mesh of copper wire to distinguish it as his.

For the most part Technus was just like any of the other Guardians in his appearance with one major exception, he had wasn't whole. At a glance it might look like he was wearing a copper-colored glove and sleeve combo on his left arm that matched his shirt, but Mage knew the truth, it was a cybernetic arm, and it didn't stop just under the Guardian's shirt.

Right now, Technus was sitting to Mage's left and had his hood up covering his curly dark brown hair, but Mage knew the extent of his friend's cybernetics. It had occurred millennia ago during the Guardian civil war when one of their own betrayed her oath and divided their supports in a bid to usurp power.

Back then Mage was a new Guardian having recently ascended from the ranks of their followers, but Technus was still in those ranks, a major at the time so the rank that was where the next Guardian or Guardians would be drawn from and already showing an aptitude for automatons and machinery that surpassed what humans could imagine for millennia.

Of all his skills, Technus had been best with automated soldiers and weapons, so he was a big threat to the traitors who put him on a target list to take out during the war. Though he was an illegitimate immortal so he couldn't die, they had a plan to take Technus out and force him to retire. Mage hadn't been there for that battle, but he knew what happened and he couldn't imagine going through it.

During the battle, one of the senior commanders of their enemies, a being known only as Scimitar for his use of a cursed scimitar, sought Technus out on the battlefield. Despite his brain, Technus was not a great weapon fighter even with his custom staff and lost to a swordsman who could best almost any Guardian with ease. Scimitar had tried to bisect Technus diagonally from hip to shoulder with a single strike once he disarmed Technus and thus force Technus to live for eternity like that.

However, at the last minute, Technus managed to get low to deflect the scimitar up and lean to the side so that rather than be bisected, the blade hit him just above the left elbow and took out his arm, shoulder, part of his lung, the left side of his neck with a nick to his vocal cords, his left jaw, part of his tongue, left ear and left eye before Technus managed to get out of the way of it. Scimitar was about to deliver a second blow before a Guardian with better swordsmanship came in to fend him off and Technus was pulled to safety.

Unfortunately, the cursed blade caused the cut off part to disintegrate and they had to cut a layer of flesh off the wound to fully remove the curse, while Technus was still conscious as they couldn't knock him out for the procedure. Even with Dominus's power, they couldn't regrow what was lost as the curse was so potent that it prevented new flesh and bone from being put there. Only the fact that Technus was an immortal saved his life, but it took him out of the war and a full half century to recover from his wounds, all the time in pain from them.

Once he was able to though, Technus set about healing himself the way how only he could. One thing Mage would note about the man was that he was very much like his father, terrible with people but great with machines and inventions and he used this to build the replacements for the parts of himself that he'd lost to Scimitar's blade hence the slight metallic twang to his voice. He had to fuse it to his body without anesthetic for it to take hold, but it had worked in the end and Technus was back.

In fact, it was this very achievement that led to the Original Guardians approving of his ascension to Guardianship and a near unanimous vote from the Guardians as a whole to elevate Technus to their number. After that Dominus formally made the man the Guardian of Technology for his skills and Technus joined their ranks as the 21st Guardian, though his number was 20 due to the traitor.

Over the years he'd improved and upgraded his artificial parts to the point that they were now fully cybernetic as was the case in the current progress of human development. It also helped with his cover as he was now the best maker of cybernetics and hero support items thanks to what the world thought was his Quirk and they rolled with it. He was the Guardians official geek and fully embraced it. Mage hadn't expected him to be here for this but with a first-year support student in the last 16 he realized that Technus couldn't miss that.

"Your girl is good Tikki." Technus said as Marinette easily won her battle with Kaminari. "She handled that well."

"Marinette is amazing, and she really knows how to use that Lucky Charm." Tikki said as Plagg laughed at the sight below them. "Though that last part I think is personal. She was wearing this cute cheerleader outfit earlier and I am sure that Kaminari had something to do with that."

"Kaminari will not live it down." Mage said. "He really needs to get a handle on that short circuiting problem of his."

"I can't do shit with human brains." Technus said as the robots took Kaminari off the battlefield. "Maybe see if Bolt can help if he's got an electric Quirk. No one better than the Guardian of Thunder for that."

"Yeah but I've already got him coming in for another purpose after the Festival." Mage said. "And you know how hard it is dealing with one of the primordial Guardians, especially that one. His mood can change faster than any of them and when it does it's usually brief but destructive."

"Well, they are actually their elements, forged from them by Chaos himself." Technus said as they heard Present Mic's introductions for the 4th match, the one he'd come for. "But now let's watch, I've already got a good feeling about her, she's covered in inventions that are impressive and she's got a speaker system ready."

"That eye of yours is really good." Mage said as a pair of binoculars appeared before him, and he looked through them to fully see Hatsume and her gadgets. "Though her opponent is wearing her gear as well, that doesn't look right."

"That's because she likely tricked him." A new voice said behind them sticking with English but with an unplaceable but distinctly American accent this time. "Clever and cunning girl that one, no wonder you're interested Technus."

"Dominus, you honor us." Technus said not looking back at the Master Guardian who'd suddenly appeared in the seat between and behind the two Guardians and was now leaning on it casually. "Good to see you again my friend."

"Likewise." Dominus said with a pat on Technus's back. "Been a bit."

"What took you so long to appear?" Mage asked.

"I was waiting for things to get good and with Technus here things must be as he doesn't show up here often." Dominus said with a shrug as Midnight approved the gear. "And it looks like they will so let's sit back and enjoy."

It didn't take long for the spectacle to begin. It was clear that Hatsume was using Ida for her own purposes the moment her voice filled the stadium from her speakers as she commented on her gear that Ida was wearing and how it improved his Quirk's abilities. She then used hydraulics from her backpack to evade him and trip him up, all while not breaking her running commentary.

"Not bad." Technus said with a smile. "She's got spunk, brains, cunning, and covers her bases. Usually that steampunk style she uses might cost her with some of the more traditional or aesthetic people, but I don't care as I like that style myself and it really fits her personality. Gear isn't supposed to be pretty; it's supposed to work."

"I'll give it to her; she's got a certain flair to her." Mage said as Ida got up and charged her back but a sensor there lifted her up to avoid it and trip Ida up. "And a drive to get what she wants while covering her bases well. she'll go far."

"That she will." Technus said grinning now as the stabilizers on Ida's gear and prevented him from going out of bounds thus keeping him as her walking advertisement though he was now spinning madly. "She thinks of everything and if she created all of this since starting at U.A. then she has real talent. Usually, it would take a human a full year to make all that and I heard she had even more on her in the last two rounds."

"She did, hover boots, grapple cables, and an air jet pack at least." Mage said as Hatsume used her boots to leap over Ida showing them off while talking the whole time. "She's holding her own pretty well with gear and showing it off."

"I would like to see what she can do without having control of her opponent, but I understand her reasons for that as she's showing off what she has made and not trying to win." Technus said as she used a capture gun to net Ida and began showing it off. "What's her Quirk? Is it orientated to this field."

"One sec." Mage said as a directory of U.A. students appeared before him, and he opened it to the Support Course and began searching for Hatsume's picture as she began to hype herself up even more to the startled crowd who were now really confused as to what was going on. "Here it is. Huh, it seems to be useless to her in terms of creation though might have some practical uses for field tests. It's called Zoom and allows her to see up to 5km if she really focuses."

"Intriguing." Technus said rubbing his chin as Hatsume claimed to have even more items on her. "She truly is a prodigy then. It's decided, I'll be making this chick and offer for my new division the moment this Festival is over, or she withdraws, whichever comes first."

"Wait really?" Mage asked. "That was fast."

"Dominus, care to explain." Technus said as he began to focus on Hatsume and her claim to have even more babies as she called her gear on her. "I'm enjoying this too much to miss it with idle chit chat."

"We've had a sparse presence in Japan for decades because of All Might but with his career coming to an end soon now that he's passed on his Quirk things will change." Dominus said. "The chaos is coming but not even Demos has foreseen when it will arrive or what it will be. We need to do our actual jobs and protect the line from the shadows. Our agency here was the first step as we showed off our potential, but it is just the first step. We are also known for our support work but not here. This will change and Technus is going to open a branch in Japan within the next year."

"Makes sense, we do need that." Mage said. "There's been some fishy things with a few of the companies in this nation. Not the main ones with the big contracts but ones with lesser reputations and there is one big company that I'm wary of, but Detnerat has yet to do anything illegal that I know of."

"I'm recruiting now and starting with the schools where there is less likely to be corruption." Technus said. "And U.A. is the best place for talent and honor out there. In time though. I'm going to enjoy this show first and will approach her personally later."

"An honor indeed." Mage said as he settled back to watch the show. "It's what she wants after all so let's see if she can keep it up."

Hatsume certainly kept it up as she continued for a good 10 more minutes showing off an increasing series of complex and useful gadgets as she used Ida as a walking billboard. When Hatsume had exhausted her supply of gear, or babies as she kept calling them, she calmly walked out of the battlefield while Ida protested even though he'd technically won the battle. Technus just grinned and got up to leave without another word as he had business to attend to.

"When's Adrien up?" Dominus asked as Technus left. "I saw that Marinette advanced but he's not up yet."

"7th." Mage said simply. "So, two battles before his but these should be straightforward. His won't be."

"As it should be." Dominus said as Tokoyami and Yaoyorozu appeared on the battlefield. "Time to enjoy, we'll break it down a bit after the round ends."

Mage nodded as he settled in to continue watching the Sports Festival. It was certainly a good one this year and with some of the matchups promised it was going to get even better as it progressed.

"Poor Ida, he never questioned Hatsume's motives." Izuku said making some notes as Ida won not noticing that Uraraka had gone quiet. "She used his nature to trick him."

"He's too noble a soul which is great for a hero, but he needs to know that others won't be as honorable at times." Marinette said. "This will be a learning experience for him once he calms down and I am sure he will realize that too. As will my battle with him next."

"Do you think you can win it m'lady?" Adrien asked realizing that Marinette and Ida were going to face off next round in the first battle within their friend group. "He's pretty strong and with that new speed boost he's even better than we expected."

"Depends on factors but I think it will come down to one or two things in the end." Marinette said thinking on the coming battle. "It will be a good test for both of us though, that is for sure."

"Alright after that interesting battle let's move on to the 5th one." Present Mic said hyping the crowd up as Tokoyami and Yaoyorozu appeared in the arena and began walking to the battlefield. "On one side we have the dark samurai and his even darker shadow, from the Hero Course Fumikage Tokoyami!"

The crowd cheered as Tokoyami stood there calmly and coolly, his arms crossed his chest as he waited for the start. By contrast Yaoyorozu looked a little nervous as she stood opposite him, the braziers belching flames into the air behind her.

"Facing the great creator who got in on recommendations, also from the Hero Course, it's Momo Yaoyorozu!" Present Mic said to the cheering crowd.

"Who do you think will win this one?" Ojiro asked Midoriya having deduced that he was the best person to talk to about the fights given his analytical skills.

"Hard to say." Midoriya said. "Combat wise Tokoyami has the edge, he's one of the best in the class, but Yaoyorozu is the most versatile with her Quirk and the smartest so that balances it out I think."

"It will come down to speed and battle instinct." Adrien said simply as he used his memory of training with Yaoyorozu to analyze this matchup. "Who is faster with their Quirk and understands a battlefield situation better. I have a feeling I know how this will play out."

"Begin!" Present Mic said before anyone could respond to Adrien.

Almost at once Dark Shadow appeared showing how fast it could be summoned and it bore down on Yaoyorozu in seconds. All she had time to do was produce a shield on her left arm and block the attack, but it pushed her back as Dark Shadow glanced off it.

She then tried to create a weapon, but Dark Shadow was showing its mobility as it spun around and hit her again, this time hard enough to make her drop her shield. Yaoyorozu managed to create a large one just in time to block a third strike before Dark Shadow fell back to hover in its usual ready position in front of Tokoyami who had yet to move.

It was clear that Yaoyorozu saw this as her chance and created a metal staff in her right hand, but the crowd could see why Tokoyami had stopped attacking. The girl hadn't stood a chance and had suffered the fasted defeat to date.

"Yaoyorozu's out." Midnight declare with a flick of her flail and Yaoyorozu looked down to see one of her feet was in deed out of the ring. "Tokoyami wins."

Tokoyami bowed formally to his opponent and turned to leave while Present Mic hyped up his Quirk. Momo stood there stunned at her quick defeat without getting an attack off at all, her second such one since starting at U.A., not including her sparring loss to Marinette as that had just been practice. It took her a moment to leave but after that loss she had a lot to think on and none of it was good.

"That's not good but as I expected." Adrien said with a sigh when it ended. "I have to go and get ready but Marinette, can you explain that to the others. You know Yaoyorozu and her power as well as I do."

"Sure, I get it." Marinette said as Adrien got up and left to go to his waiting room for his battle with Kirishima. "I have sparred with her before; I know how Momo fights."

"What do you get?" Ojiro asked. "I expected that to be more even."

"On paper it is but battle is more than just paper." Marinette said as Ida rejoined them having just got back but still clearly annoyed by Hatsume's antics and grumbling about it. "It's about instinct, awareness, and experience. Momo is good, she's smart and has an incredible Quirk with great control of it despite its complexity but she lacks battle experience. She thought too analytically in that setting while Tokoyami used speed, instinct, and overwhelming force to instantly take the battle to her before she could think on it. He went with something simple and kept her on the defensive and she didn't adjust. If you can take out Momo's mental advantage and rely on battle instinct you can beat her."

"I see, that does make sense." Izuku said writing some notes in his notebook. "Tokoyami can produce Dark Shadow almost instantaneously while Yaoyorozu needs a few seconds to create her item. That was the time that Tokoyami used to attack and Yaoyorozu's inexperience in a battle hurt her."

"That will come in time, but she needs to not let this get to her." Marinette said as the recommended girl left the arena and the next two came out, but she feared that it would. "She's got brains and power, she's an excellent second in command in charge of pre battle tactics on any team with her abilities and she has leadership potential if she learns to deal with battlefield situations better. This will help her grow, I think."

"Makes sense." Ojiro said. "So, what about this next matchup."

"This is the most unpredictable one of the lot." Izuku said as Aoyama and Mina were introduced by Present Mic and began to banter a little on the battlefield. "Aoyama has the slight edge here as his Quirk is good at range and there is no cover for Ashido, but she does have a good grip on her Quirk and so long as she gets in close she can use it to her advantage. Hard to say right now."

"Begin." Present Mic said and Aoyama attacked.

The navel laser was powerful and would be a problem for Ashido if it hit her, but she was already on the move. She was using her acid from her feet to create a slick surface that she could slide on as she expertly skated over the concrete avoiding the attacks from Aoyama with an impressive display of acrobatics and flexibility, even leaping over one blast and doing the splits at the same time. It was impressive but she was barely making ground on Aoyama who was managing to keep her at bay.

However, Aoyama appeared to be struggling with something, a side effect of his Quirk it seemed, and he wasn't looking to good. That made him get desperate and he sent a big blast at Ashido, but she avoided it and Aoyama seemed to hesitate for some reason. That was a small opening, and the pink skinned girl took it to throw acid from her hand onto his belt, destroying it and dropping Aoyama's pants in the process which no one wanted to see. As he was trying to fix it and panicking, Ashido closed the distance and launched a devastating upper cut to lay Aoyama out cold on the concrete.

"Aoyama has been knocked out." Midnight declared. "Ashido is the winner."

"Wow Mina is pretty amazing, ribbit." Tsu said as Mineta complained that it was Aoyama he'd seen the underwear of and not Ashido.

"Ashido's Quirk is good, and she knows how to use it to give her a big mobility boost, but it was her raw strength and abilities that won it not her Quirk though it did help a lot." Izuku mumbled as Uraraka got up and left the box. "Then again she did place 9th in the Quirk assessment test so I shouldn't be surprised at how good she is."

"Our 7th matchup features another interesting bout." Present Mic said as Adrien and Kirishima entered the arena. "First up we have a passionate and manly man made of rock, it's the Hero Course's Ejiro Kirishima!"

The crowd cheered and that was when Izuku noticed that Uraraka wasn't there anymore. She had left at some point and as she was up against Kacchan next she was no doubt deep in thought about it and how to counter him.

"Up against him is the second French exchange student so he's a recommended student as well." Present Mic said to the cheering crowd. "The master of dark, destructive, energy, from the Hero Course, it's Adrien Agreste!"

"Go to her, it will help to have you near her before her battle, I know it." Marinette said softly to Izuku so that only he could hear her. "It will give her comfort and confidence to have you there for her. This one will last a while; I have a feeling I know what Adrien's tactic will be so there is time."

"Right, will do." Izuku said as he got up, Ida joining him having realized the same thing but missing why Marinette wanted it to be just Midoriya and they headed to the waiting rooms to see Uraraka.

Marinette smiled at that, even if Ida was inadvertently third wheeling them. It was clear that there was something deep between the pair, she could tell even if they couldn't yet, and this would help Uraraka prepare for her tough battle to come. First though, Marinette had to watch her man win and then it would be interesting given who he might face next.

"Begin." Present Mic said.

Almost as soon as the battle began, Kirishima charged at Adrien at full speed, his skin hardening as he ran. That slowed him down but even if it didn't Adrien would have been able to see where the guy was coming from a mile away and calmly leapt into the air with a twisting leap from a standing position to get behind Kirishima while showing off his athleticism at the same time.

"Woah look at that leap!" Present Mic said. "Who knew that Agreste could do that?"

"Training and the byproduct of one of the world's most intense Quirk Marriage system allowed that." Aizawa said. "The French were very into that for generations, Agreste, even more so than Dupain-Cheng, is the end result of that before the practice was banned there a few generations ago."

"Cool." Present Mic said.

Adrien just ignored it as he landed facing Kirishima and launched a kick at him. Kirishima turned around in time to get his hardened arms up and block it. Adrien had put all his power into the kick to test Kirishima's defense and see how much damage he could do. It was safe to say that right now Kirishima had the edge.

He felt Kirishima's Quirk take the blow with ease and knew that he was going to have a bruise there that he'd have to get fixed after the battle. Anyone else without a strength boost or enhanced durability might actually be badly hurt by it but to Adrien it just told him to be careful. It also staggered Kirishima back a bit much to his shock.

"Not bad Agreste." Kirishima said as he recovered and launch a jab at Adrien's face. "I'm surprised you went with that against my hardening. Real manly of you as I'd expect."

"Had to see how generations of Quirk Marriages stacked up against your Quirk." Adrien said as he dodged the first punch but had to bring his arms up in a guard to take the second as it staggered him back a bit and left his forearms red and bruised. "Safe to say that even with my raw strength you're hardening hurts to hit."

"Well, your blow was really manly, I felt it and the more blows I take the tougher my Quirk gets." Kirishima said as he began to press Adrien who was now backing up and Kirishima saw a chance, so he kept doing it. "We should spar sometime. I get stronger the more I get hit in this form and you can hit."

"Sure, if I have the time and prepare properly it would help with my hand-to-hand training." Adrien said backing up more as he was pushed to the edge and dodged blows knowing that they'd hurt if they landed. "It would be good training against something that doesn't hit back but you should take martial arts training as well."

"Why?" Kirishima asked continuing his onslaught and picking it up as he could feel his hardening begin to weaken so he needed to end this quick as Agreste neared the white line.

"Because it will complement your strength as a brawler and make your punches less telegraphed and thus harder to dodge." Adrien said as he saw the line approaching. "Later though, time to win."

With that Adrien leapt up and over Kirishima as the punch came at him so that Kirishima hit thin air and was off balance as he lent forward. As soon as Adrien saw this, while still in midair, he kicked down at the back of Kirishima's head with both feet while using it to push himself off and flip towards the middle of the battlefield, the move hopefully pushing Kirishima out at the same time.

At least that was the plan, but Kirishima's hardened body ensured that he had enough weight to not fall forward and over the line. Adrien cursed himself for not using more power as he flipped in the air to see Kirishima turn and leap at him to get away from the edge, his fist cocked back to strike him.

All Adrien could do was land and immediately backflip as Kirishima closed on him. The move allowed Adrien to kick Kirishima below his jaw with enough force to snap his head back and put him on his back. It felt less hard to Adrien as he finished his move and landed in a crouch looking at Kirishima. His classmate was on his back, but he groaned and sat up, working his jaw with his hand but seeming to be fine as his hardening was there but now Adrien understood what was going on. It was what he'd expected to be the case and now he had proof that his strategy would work.

"That one hurt more, didn't it." Adrien said with a grin as Kirishima looked at him with surprise. "You're overusing your Quirk; I can tell now. You can't keep up that hard body for much longer, can you?"

Adrien saw the realization in Kirishima's eyes at that and grinned. He had him now, it was only a matter of time before he landed the finishing blow.

With a roar Kirishima leapt at Adrien again but the French boy simply hopped back and out of the way of the punch. Kirishima knew that he was on the edge and had to end it quick but for the next few minutes Adrien simply leaped around him as he wore out Kirishima's stamina until the hardening finally ended. It was good but the boy needed to get better at holding it or wisely employing it but that was what school was for.

"Good effort but it's over." Adrien said as he stopped moving and Kirishima made one last charge, but his hardening was done. "I look forward to facing you again someday when you've gotten a better handle on brawling."

Adrien simply caught Kirishima's fist in his left hand as it was thrown before responding with his own punch. His fist connected with the side of Kirishima's jaw as he tried to turn away and knocked him clean out. As that happened Adrien let go of Kirishima and he collapsed to the ground.

"Kirishima has been knocked out." Midnight declare with a whip of her flail. "Agreste is the winner."

"What just happened there?" Present Mic asked as Adrien stayed to make sure that the robots picked up Kirishima and took him off the battlefield to the nurse's office, he'd try and chat with Kirishima about the battle when he had a moment after the Festival. "That looked more like a gymnastics routine than a battle."

"Agreste showed his experience there by realizing that Kirishima's Quirk couldn't be maintained indefinitely while Kirishima forgot that Quirks are physical attributes as well and there is a limit to how much you can use your Quirk." Aizawa said. "Add in that Agreste can't use his Quirk on organic material, so he used his superior athleticism and stamina to tire out Kirishima and end him with mundane hand to hand combat when Kirishima couldn't use his Quirk anymore. It's a valid strategy that I myself have used many times before and works well when you have the space and a villain who is focused solely on you."

"Interesting." Present Mic said as Adrien left to rejoin his friends for the final matchup, Bakugo verses Uraraka.

"Well done Adrien." Marinette said with a smile as Adrien managed to get back just as Present Mic was finishing his introductions for Bakugo and Uraraka, he'd get his bruises looked at during the break between this battle and the start of the quarterfinals. "I thought you would do that."

"Well, my first strategy was to lure him to the edge and kick him out when I realized that I couldn't win in a head on fight against Kirishima's Quirk but he's sturdier than he looks." Adrien said as he sat down with Marinette, Ida, and Izuku. "But in the end he overused his Quirk, so I used that to my advantage."

"Clever, people forget that Quirks are physical abilities too so you can over use them if you're not careful." Izuku said nervously as the battle between Uraraka and Bakugo began. "You used that to your advantage there."

"It was my backup plan." Adrien said as the first explosion rocked the stadium. "So how will this go?"

"I don't know." Midoriya said worried as another explosion rocked and Uraraka, now not wearing her P.E. top having removed it to distract Bakugo and try to touch him but failing and being blasted back hard so that she hit the ground and rolled. "This is a bad matchup. I tried to help but Uraraka said she can do this on her own and she's right, she has to do this without help. It was dishonorable of me to try and help."

"You were being a good friend and she'll appreciate that." Marinette said as Uraraka charged again, going low but getting blasted back while some of the battlefield was damaged but the blast. "But she's right, she has to do this alone, but she'll use you as inspiration. I am sure of that much."

"It's a tough matchup for sure." Adrien said with a wince as Uraraka was blasted back again but got up despite her injuries. "She needs to touch someone or something for her Quirk to work and there are not barriers for her so Bakugo has a huge advantage as his Quirk can keep her at a distance."

"I believe in her." Izuku said seriously. "Uraraka has this. Kacchan will underestimate her and that is where she will win."

Marinette just smiled and nodded as the battle continued. It was certainly hard to watch as Uraraka seemed to be doing the same thing over and over again and taking a lot of damage in the process. She charged in low to Bakugo who blasted her back with a savage explosion that kicked up dust and concrete with each hit.

It continued a dozen times or so showing Uraraka's strength to keep getting up and attacking. It was so savage that some of the crowd were now pissed at Bakugo for his actions against a girl. That ended when Aizawa decking Present Mic with his elbow and loudly scolded them for their actions as unheroic.

Of course, that was the moment the real picture was revealed to everyone as no one saw what was actually happening. Uraraka stood from the last hit and brought her hands together to release her Quirk to the stadium's surprise as she had yet to touch Bakugo.

They had been so focused on the hits Uraraka was taking from her failed rushes to realize what the purpose of them had been and why she's always gone low forcing Bakugo to do so as well to throw her back. The girl had used Bakugo's own destructive power against him to dislodge the concrete and give her a weapon in a situation where she normally wouldn't have one. Then, as she was blasted back, Uraraka touched the dislodged debris and made it float using the dust to hide it and quickly attacking again to keep Bakugo occupied and distracted.

In short it was a genius tactic that not even Izuku had thought of and showed both how well Uraraka knew her Quirk, how smart she actually was in a battle situation, and how strong she was to resist all the attacks. Now she had a maelstrom of concrete that was raining down from a high height right onto Bakugo. That would distract him as she close in to make him float and win this.

At least that was the plan, but Bakugo wasn't done yet. He raised his left hand, grasped his wrist with his right, and unleashed a massive explosion, one larger than any had ever seen before and almost on par to what he could produce with his gauntlets. He's pushed past his limits and the force of it obliterated the debris coming for him and blasted Uraraka back even further, causing her her hardest hit in the battle.

Marinette couldn't help but feel bad for her as the smoke cleared to show the debris on the ground and Bakugo standing calmly where he was looking at Uraraka as she struggled to her feet but managed it. That had been her ace and he'd blasted it away as if it was nothing. She had nothing left but she still got up slowly. Only Adrien noticed that Bakugo's left hand was twitching from what he'd just done.

They couldn't hear what he was saying but Bakugo suddenly crouched and began running at Uraraka showing how much respect he had for her after that move that he was going on the offensive against her. Uraraka for her part tried to continue and turned to meet Bakugo but as she did she fell over. She'd reached her limit and couldn't go any further. Between her Quirk and the hits that she'd taken she was past the edge and tried to continue but couldn't as she passed out before Bakugo could reach her.

"Uraraka is unable to continue." Midnight declared with a flick of her flail. "Bakugo is the winner."

"And that folks concludes the first round of battles." Present Mic said to the roaring crowd. "We will now take a short break to repair the battlefield and prepare for the quarterfinals."

Almost at once Izuku was on his feet and heading out. Not only because he was next up against Todoroki to kick off the quarterfinals but to check on Uraraka. That had been amazing, and he felt bad for her losing after all she'd done to try and beat Kacchan. He wanted to make sure that she was ok.

Marinette just smiled at that, and she wasn't the only one to notice how much Midoriya cared for his friend. It was the right thing to do, and she knew that he'd use their friendship to boost him for his match with Todoroki. Now that was going to be something else, and Marinette couldn't wait to see it as the Sports Festival continued.

"Not bad so far." Dominus said as the stage was being fixed. "It went as expected other than that 6th match which was a tossup I felt. Gotta say though, that final one was a real surprise."

"I don't know the class well yet, I won't be teaching them until the third semester after the new year, but Marinette and Adrien have told me that Uraraka and Midoriya are close friends and part of their little group." Mage said. "Uraraka seems to be his best friend in fact so she no doubt learned a thing or two from him, but I don't think Midoriya came up with that, that was all Uraraka. Bakugo was forced to go all out at the end and showed his power."

"That had to hurt but he's too good to lose that matchup." Dominus said. "He's up against Adrien next though, that will be interesting."

"It will be." Mage said. "And one that I can't predict. Marinette has a good shot against Ida, that one will come down to a few factors but Adrien verse Bakugo is different. I wonder how that one will go."

"Well, my money is on Adrien." Plagg said as he suddenly had a phone in his hand that he'd produced from gods know where and began speaking Japanese into it. "Yo, Kangiten, my man, put me down for 1 million yen on my boy Agreste to beat Bakugo in the quarterfinals of the U.A. Sports Festival ... What, of course I'm good for the cash, no I do not owe you a few billion yen already, it's only a couple hundred million at this point after Adrien won the last one … Yes, yes I know the odds are against him but he's going to win, and this will help clear things up between us … Alright thanks man, you're the best. Usual time with Fracture and Quasar next week? … Perfect let's hit that casino and see if Nezha and Mimir are around."

"Do I even want to know?" Dominus asked with a raised eyebrow. "Isn't Kangiten a Japanese deity that is favored by gamblers?"

"He is so naturally he and Plagg have known each other for millennia." Mage said with a sigh. "Without an actual holder per se, these two are free to do as they please and they aren't questioned in the Quirk society we live in, so they have no real restrictions. They live with Adrien and Marinette but do their own thing most of the time."

"Hey, I am at least responsible." Tikki said defensively.

"True, you are but Plagg, well it's as bad as it was back in the day if not worse." Mage said. "I need to send someone with him all the time or else we might lose part of Japan, again."

"Makes sense." Dominus said with a chuckled as Present Mic's voice filled the air and Midoriya and Todoroki walked out to kick off the quarterfinals. "But for now, let's sit back and enjoy the next battle."

The rest of the immortal beings present just nodded as they turned to the battlefield. The quarterfinals of the first year's U.A. Sports Festival had begun.

Well, there is the first round for y'all to enjoy. As you can tell, any canon battle was glossed over as there was no point in revisiting it while Adrien and Marinette watched and gave commentary. The main focus was of course on their own battles and how they both won and advanced. Next up we get to see Marinette face Ida while Adrien takes on Bakugo, should be good. For those wondering, Plagg's personality is basically a bit of a more mature and unrestrained version I've interpreted from his personality in the show and if you want to see more of his antics then check out my Miraculous Revelations collection (I know, shameless self-shoutout) to see what other shenanigans Plagg may have engaged it. However, that is all I have for y'all so I will leave this chapter here. If you like it or have any questions please let me know in reviews or PMs, I will try to answer them as best I could and post any questions asked between uploads at the start of the next chapter and do follow and favorite this, so you are alerted to future uploads. Do keep the reviews coming as I like hearing from y'all as you enjoy my work, it motivates me to keep producing the best work I can for y'all to enjoy. Until next time.
