Here it is, the twenty-fourth full chapter of Miraculous Quirks released a little early as I had the time to edit it. I have been making so much progress with the draft (3 more chapters since the last time I uploaded) and this is a short, filler, catch-up and plan chapter that I had the time to edit and release it early for your enjoyment. That is all the administrative stuff I have for now and there are no questions or guest reviews to address here, though do keep the reviews coming as I enjoy hearing from y'all, so I will leave this note here. That means that it is time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the 24th full chapter of Miraculous Quirks.
Disclaimer: I do not own either of these great works of fiction.
Chapter 24: Internship Decisions
Marinette and Adrien walked into the open plan living and kitchen having gotten back from U.A. half an hour ago. They'd used that time to change, sort a few things out, and re-do Marinette's bandages. Now it was dinner time and with the internship offers, the internships themselves, and class on hero names it was time for a checkup with Mage about everything.
They'd changed into more comfortable attire as soon as they'd gotten back and that was not just because it had been raining out, it was just nicer in these clothes. Adrien was in a simple white t-shirt and basketball shorts while Marinette wore a tank top and athletic shorts, her left arm bandaged from her hand, minus her fingertips, to her shoulder with straps across her chest.
Mage himself, or at least a small portion of his consciousness that present in Japan, was sitting at the bar in the kitchen area in his usual seat and attire though no gauntlets as he looked over some papers as he ate his dinner. From the smell and look of it, it was a traditional English meal that seemed to be sausages or something similar in a bread-like dish thing with gravy on it and a heaping side of vegetables on the side. He was accompanying it with an amber colored beer that seemed to not be cold.
"Ah you're changed and ready." Mage said as he swallowed a mouthful of the strange dish and looked up at them. "Come, get some dinner and let's talk about things. How's the arm Marinette?"
"Good." Marinette said rolling her left arm as best she could with the bandages that were on her shoulder. "Pretty much all healed. Recovery Girl will have one final look at it tomorrow after school and make sure it's fully healed and there is no scaring. My side is fine, the worst damage was on the arm as my forearm and hand that were exposed and the upper arm sleeve as it was closer to the skin so more melted into it. I ripped off more skin there than anywhere else."
"Makes sense." Mage said. "And Recovery Girl does a good job with that Quirk of hers."
"That she does." Marinette said with a nod. "And it will be good to get the bandages off for good. In order to fully bind my shoulder, I, er, need to have my chest bound as well and while I'm not big in that department it's still not the most comfortable."
"Ah yes I can see how that would be a problem." Mage said slightly uncomfortable and shifting away from that. "Well, it will be over soon and just in time for your internship. In fact, I'm just finishing looking over your offers right now. I take it you looked at them."
"On the train back." Marinette said and she meant it, they'd actually taken the train for once before walking here to have the time to check things out regarding their offers. "Though most are names we don't recognize."
"That is to be expected." Mage said. "There is a gluttony of heroes in Japan, and it is competitive to reach the top. Thankfully, U.A. attracts the best so you have some good offers, but many make offers just in case. You two both got plenty. A total of 689 different offers when duplicates between you two are taken into account and some are very good with one being completely unique and unheard of for a U.A. student to get, or any for that matter I believe."
"Well Marinette was 3rd in the class, and I was 5th." Adrien said curious as to what that unique offer was as they couldn't tell from looking at the lists themselves but not asking just yet. "Though it was a big gap to the top two."
"Yeah almost 3,000 offers between me and Bakugo." Marinette said. "It was a bit of a surprise with how top heavy it was."
"Todoroki's father is Endeavor, that will attract a lot of offers while Bakugo beat him and won it, so it makes sense that it was so top heavy though usually it's not like that from what I've heard." Mage said. "I'm not surprised you two placed where you did though. Marinette did do very well and reached the semifinals before forcing Todoroki to go all out to beat her while you challenge Bakugo the most Adrien. Congrats by the way."
"Thank you." Marinette said as she and Adrien took their seats and thought what they wanted for dinner. "It was a lot of fun competing even if I didn't win. It actually felt like an almost normal school just with powers and much more global attention."
"Same." Adrien said. "And it really showed me where I stand in the class as well."
"That is the point of it." Mage said as the meals appeared before them. "We will start by talking about the Sports Festival as there is a bit to digest from that."
Marinette and Adrien nodded as their meals appeared. Marinette had gone with a traditional French onion soup and a half baguette on the side while Adrien had gone with steak frites complete with all the normal French trimmings. The one thing that the pair still kept most of the time was western style, predominantly French, meals though they did enjoy mixing it up from time to time and did eat the local cuisine a few times at least. They both also went with juice to pair with the food.
"Before we discuss the festival." Adrien said as he tucked into the rare steak, meat cooking was one of the few things the French and British agreed on as both preferred it on the rarer side. "I have to ask, where are the kwamis? They weren't in our rooms when we got back and it wasn't just Tikki and Plagg, it was all of them."
"Various places." Mage said with a shrug as he took drink from his beer. "In the current society they can be more open as people don't question them because they are so used to strange things that kwamis aren't out if place here. Plagg is out with Trixx, Sass, Stompp, and Xuppa at some event hosted in the countryside by a few of the Japanese deities still around. Meanwhile Tikki and all the female kwamis are having a girl's trip to some sweet store thing with a few female deities that are still active. The others are up to whatever they get up to. You know how it is. They are all really enjoying their current freedom."
"I do which means that Plagg will be a state when he returns." Adrien said with a sigh. "He's really going wild lately."
"Lost time to make up and it's been millennia since they have been able to be this publicly in the world without worries." Mage said with a shrug. "You know how it is with him. He was always a little wild, such is his nature due to being the Kwami of Destruction, but he'll calm down soon once he gets the initial phase out of his system."
"True." Adrien said and he had no problem with Plagg enjoying his freedom as he would never restrict the kwami, he knew what that was like too much to ever inflict it upon another being. "Alright, I'll see him later then."
"Also." Marinette said eyeing Mage's food warily. "What are you eating and why do I feel like it's something only the British would enjoy?"
"It's called toad in the hole, and you are right, it's a very traditional British dish." Mage said with a grin. "Sausages baked into Yorkshire pudding drowning in onion gravy with a side of mixed veg and paired with a good, British, ale not served cold like the yanks enjoy. Can't beat it."
"Food has always been something the French and British never really agreed on." Adrien said with a shake of his head. "Though I don't mind it so much as I grew up eating various European dishes."
"Well yeah, how can you lot eat snails, frogs' legs, and all that offal." Mage said. "I mean kidneys I understand, those are good, same with liver, but the rest is just strange. I've spend a lot of time in France, but I never got a taste for the food beyond the pastries. Their wine on the other hand, that is something I'll give the French credit on as they can do that really well."
"They're tasty." Adrien said with a shrug though he did agree on the wine front. "The brits like things bland for some reason."
"True." Mage said. "And filling. It's good stuff."
"I think we'll never see eye to eye on food." Marinette said with a shake of her head. "Though I am still trying to get Lunch Rush to supply some escargot for me but it's hard to find edible ones here apparently. It's been a while since I had them."
"You can ask for them here." Mage said with a wave of his hand and a plate of snails made French style using one of the more popular kind of snail appeared before Marinette. "They can be made just to your liking."
"True and they are good." Marinette said as she took on and enjoyed it, it was a really good taste of home though they were more of a delicacy, so she'd not have them that often. "But I want to introduce our new friends to French cuisine."
"Starting bold there I see." Mage said with a chuckle. "But then again the Japanese have their own strange dishes, all nations do. Enough about food though, let's move back to the Sports Festival. You two acquitted yourselves well in it."
"Thank you." Marinette said. "I am annoyed I couldn't beat Todoroki though; he was just too fast for me to get a good item and showed how speed can really be an issue for me, especially when it is mixed with other tactics and not just pure speed like Ida. Still, that bronze medal is pride of place in my room right now. I'll treasure it for what it means to me but I'm going to use it to fuel me to be better and go for the gold one next year."
"As it should." Mage said glad that Marinette was using it to fuel her to get better. "And you know where you need to work on going forward. You can't rely on your Quirk all the time Marinette. It's strong for sure, arguably one of the strongest in your class, and will be tough for most to beat but you will face those who can negate or counter it. Your strength and hand to hand combat are things that you need to work on as well."
"I know." Marinette said with a nod thinking back to her loss and how her yo-yo had been destroyed by Shigaraki and realizing she really needed some form of formal instruction in how to fight without her Quirk or yo-yo. "All Might said something similar to Tokoyami on the podium and it got me thinking about it as well. I usually need time to use my Lucky Charm fully, so speed is a weakness and Todoroki was too fast and varied for me. It's something to work on and consider with my internship offers."
"We'll address those in time." Mage said. "Now Adrien, first off, well done."
"For what?" Adrien asked confused. "I did worse than Marinette in the end."
"True but in the battles, which I knew you two would reach as you had the right tactic for both the Obstacle Race and the Cavalry Battle, you were at a bigger disadvantage compared to Marinette and most of your class in fact." Mage said. "Your Quirk doesn't work well against humans, but your strength is good, few can best that in your class even with a Quirk. You're also smart and used that against Kirishima and Bakugo but the latter realized it and forced your hand and use your Quirk. That is where I am commending you. You managed to improve your Quirk already."
"Oh that, yeah I was focused on it during training." Adrien said as Marinette looked at him as well, she was curious about the change but hadn't asked him yet about it as they hadn't had the time in the wake of the Sports Festival. "During the 2 weeks we had to prepare I focused mainly on first keeping it going for the full 5 minutes with less concentration on it and then manifesting it in both hands at the same time. Plagg helped a lot and in the end I managed both though I can only keep it for 3 minutes in both hands at the same time and its potency is weaker. That's why I got more burns from Bakugo than expected."
"Still, it is impressive for sure." Mage said with a nod. "The first improvement but more will come. In time you will work to keep it going longer, cover more of your body while in your suit as that is resistant to it, and increase its speed and potency. Who knows, you may one day be able to fire it for a ranged attack."
"Really?" Adrien asked amazed. "You think so?"
"Quirks grow and develop as you train with them, so I don't see why not." Mage said with a shrug. "It's your Quirk now so will act as such. Neither Plagg nor I can say what will come of it going forward as it is your power and separate from Plagg's though he will be of some help in that regard I am sure of it. Same with Marinette's Lucky Charm."
"About that." Marinette said as she thought on it. "How can I improve my Quirk? I understand Adrien's but mine is harder to improve I feel given what it does."
"With yours the ways I can see it working are in the areas of time it can last for, size of item, ability to change it during your time period, and maybe multiple items." Mage said. "Again, I don't know where it goes from now as it is your power now, not Tikki's. However, soon you will begin working hard to really improve your powers. That is what U.A. does."
"Cool, can't wait." Adrien said with a grin.
"Same." Marinette said as she finished her meal. "But first we have to focus on our internships and what we can learn from them. Should we talk about those now?"
"We can." Mage said patting the papers next to him as his beer refilled. "These are your offers; I had a copy made for me at U.A. as you are my wards so I can get that info as well. Are there any questions you have to start with? Also, you have sorted out code names already, right? I know that Midnight was in a good mood today because it was that time of year again for the first years."
"Yeah that was today." Marinette said with a smile. "I am so happy to officially be Ladybug again. I mean I always was, but this is big as I can now tell all my new friends what my name is a and a bit about it."
"With the right back story, I hope." Mage said.
"Of course, we've already done that as a few asked about the animal theme." Adrien said. "In the process Aoyama and Yaoyorozu inadvertently helped us with solidify our backstory as they knew various aspects of it or Quirk wars history and backed us up there."
"Good to hear." Mage said. "Your names were already registered and ready, U.A. wasn't going to reject them, not that they would, but you had a chance to change it if you wanted to. However, as expected, you didn't so Ladybug and Cat Noir are back."
"Yup this kitty can't wait to get back to prowling on paw-trols." Adrien said with a grin. "So many meow-or people to hear of my greatness."
"Please no." Marinette said closing her eyes and rubbing her temples at that. "No puns, you were doing so well Adrien."
"Can't resist bugaboo." Adrien said still grinning. "I'm pretty much back to my old self now that I am fully Cat Noir again."
"Good to hear." Mage said with a smile glad to see that they'd really adjusted to the new world they were in, but he had to make sure. "Are you two ok in general."
"We still have our moments." Marinette admitted and Adrien nodded to that. "And thank you for allowing us to, er, share a room whenever we want. It really helps as we occasionally need it."
"You're a young couple that is in love, I wouldn't stop that at all." Mage said dismissively. "And if that helps you then all the better."
"It does but the real moment was the Sports Festival." Adrien admitted. "It was so normal, well as normal as this world is, and with powers that we felt really one with our class and school at it. Making it as far as we did really solidified it."
"Yeah I agree, I think that was the tipping point." Marinette said with a nod. "It really helped drive home that we are here, we are part of this society, and we are accepted though they don't know the truth of where we really come from. We have friends, powers, kwamis, and each other. We can do this."
"Plus, the reversion to our old hero names and upcoming internships will only further help us." Adrien said. "It's like we are as back to normal as possible only now we are in another country and facing different villains that aren't akumas so they're more real and more willing to kill us without hesitation."
"I know but such is the change in society." Mage said. "And on that let's move onto the internship offers at last. I am sure that you have questions regarding my offer to both of you."
"Yeah that was actually my first one." Marinette said. "Are you serious about the offer or just making it because of this situation we are in?"
"Oh, I am serious about them." Mage said. "In fact, I want one of you to intern with me if possible, but we will get onto that in a bit. I also want you two to do work studies with me when the time comes but you need your provisional hero licenses for that."
"Provisional license?" Adrien asked. "What's that?"
"A learners permit of sorts." Mage said using an analogy that they'd understand. "You can use your Quirks in an emergency as you see fit or with the supervision of a hero. You have to pass a test for it that is usually done in your second year, so you have time to get stronger for that as it is a tough test. The internships are just one-week long things where you learn the basics of the hero world, what heroes actually do, rules and regulations, go on patrols, maybe do some special training, that kinda thing. However, you should choose carefully as a bad internship can cause problems."
"I don't think one with you will be a bad one." Marinette said. "You do know about us fully and our powers so if anyone can really help it would be you."
"True which is why I want both of you for your work studies as I can really improve you during them but for the internships I'm only going to take one of you as those are a little different so best to be one on one to get the most out of it." Mage said as he looked at the papers next to him. "So right now, we will go over your offers and see who the best ones are and rank a top 3. Marinette, let's start with your offers as you're the one with a unique one. You are the first ever U.A. student, or student in general I believe, to get an offer from this hero so it is a big one."
"Who?" Marinette asked as she reached across the table with her right arm to get Mage's copy of her paperwork and look over it. "I only recognize the big names on this list, and I don't know their histories at all."
"Well, you will recognize the name for sure and I'll give you a bit of a history on her." Mage said as Marinette looked over the names and focused on the ones she recognized. "It's Mirko, the Rabbit Hero. She's currently number 6 in the charts and one of only 2 heroes in the top 10 who didn't go to either U.A. or Shiketsu. She and the other one, the number 3 hero Hawks, have never made an offer to a U.A. student until this year where both have done so. Hawks has made an offer to Tokoyami that I am sure he will take."
"Mirko, she's the tanned woman who's basically pure muscle with rabbit ears and a tail, right?" Marinette asked as she thought back to what she'd read about the hero. "I looked her up a bit during our preparation time as she's a top 20 hero. She's really strong physically if I recall."
"Correct, she reached that level through training, hard work, and the nature of her Quirk." Mage said with a nod. "Her Quirk is called Rabbit and basically allows her to do anything that a rabbit can. She can jump really high and kick like a motherfucker to put it bluntly, which is why she wears metal support items on her feet as it adds to her kicks. Her hearing is also top notch, and her ears are extremely sensitive."
"Makes sense, a rabbit's ears are naturally sensitive, it's why you should never pick a rabbit up by its ears." Adrien said. "Though I am surprised she's never had a U.A. student as an intern."
"Actually, this one is a bit more than that from what I've gathered." Mage said. "Mirko has never had an intern period. Marinette is the first offer she's ever made. The only other unique offer came in at the last minute and that was made by a hero called Gran Torino. It was an offer for Midoriya but that one is special and has to do with On for All."
"Wait what?" Marinette asked her eyes wide; she'd seen Mirko's name on her offer list, but she hadn't realized how big an offer from her was, she was so shocked that she didn't hear what Mage had said about Midoriya. "So, I basically should take the offer then? Right?"
"I can't tell you either way, the choice is yours, but it is an opportunity that may never come again." Mage said. "And she likely won't make you a work study offer as she doesn't actually have an agency which will ensure that you can do your work study with me, so you have nothing to lose by taking it and at least seeing why she has an interest in you."
"That does make sense." Marinette said thinking on it. "But before I decide can you tell me more about her and about any other good offers I have? I know that Gang Orca, who's 10th I believe, made an offer to me and I saw another animal Quirk hero with Uwabami."
"I don't recommend Uwabami." Mage said shaking his head. "She's a good hero for sure and her Sepentress Quirk makes her one of the best urban rescue heroes out there but she's also incredibly vain and focuses on her many side gigs, mainly modeling and ads for various female products, that have made her a celebrity."
"Really?" Marinette asked a little surprised.
"Yeah she's really capitalized on the side jobs a hero can get if they're well known and she really milks it." Mage said. "In fact, she only made offers to girls at U.A. this year with them being made to you, Yaoyorozu and Uraraka in your class and offers to Kendo and Tokage in the other class. I wouldn't put it past her to have some ulterior motive. If I recall the stats I saw, she's only made offers to girls in the last 4 years and they've all appeared in some commercial or ad with her because they're the cuter, more marketable girls."
"I see, that does make sense." Marinette said with a sigh, that was not what she was looking for in a supervisor hero. "What about Gang Orca?"
"His Quirk allows him to do whatever an orca can do even on land though he's better in water for obvious reasons." Mage said. "Not the best fit for you from the better offers you got but not a bad backup. He's not much of a brawler, his main attack is a hypersonic wave that can paralyze opponents, so I'm not sure why he made you an offer, but he'll have his reasons for it. Mirko can leap higher than you and is a brawler with a kick heavy style. I think there's more she can teach you compared to the others, or at least more you can learn by watching her."
"Yeah that does make sense." Marinette said as she digested what Mage had told her. "Can you tell me more about Mirko? I only know that she has a good fan following from more action orientated fans of heroes as she's very much about the offensive might of heroes. From what I've gathered, she has a high arrest count though her rankings are hurt by her habit for property damage, hospitalizations, and rather uncooperative personality."
"That is about right." Mage said. "Mirko is skilled, that is for sure, and she went to an unheralded school in Hiroshima and has a bit of a turbulent past having been expelled from her middle school for breaking up underground fights and getting arrested for it. The fact that she was allowed to become a hero, let alone reach her current position, shows that she has the skills, results, and some level of charisma that can't be measured. However, her personality could use a lot of work. Of the top 10 she's second only to Endeavor in that department."
"How so?" Adrien asked curiously. "That dude comes off as a massive dick."
"That's because he is." Mage said simply. "But he's an effective and skilled massive dick. As for Mirko, well she is known to be both extremely gung-ho and a terrible team player. In fact, she doesn't team up unless it's absolutely necessary and the hero has to be competent and not slow her down or else she'll leave the hero in the dust."
"That does make sense." Marinette said. "You have to be able to work with other heroes."
"Yes and Mirko really can't." Mage said. "She's reckless, headstrong, and tends to kick first and ask questions never, though in her defense that's more because her opponents are unconscious when she's finished with them. She'll get the job done but usually on her own. In fact, she doesn't actually have an official agency or jurisdiction. She literally bounces around from area to area wherever it is hottest and keeps a track of the news to see where the crime is. It's why she isn't reached out to for big co-op things, at least not with All Might being the main one. When he retires she'll likely be tapped to replace him as the wrecking ball I think."
"Huh that doesn't really mesh with my personality." Marinette admitted. "I am used to being a team player."
"It doesn't which makes it all the stranger that she wants you." Mage said. "But she can at least teach you how to use your enhanced strength in close combat, especially when you can't use your yo-yo, something we've learned can be destroyed by Tomura Shigaraki."
"True." Marinette said thinking on it for a moment before deciding what to do. "Very well, I'll accept her offer. She may not be my kinda person, but I think what I can learn from her is more than I could from anyone else on this list other than possibly you."
"Very good, rank the others you are interested in afterwards but as you are the only offer Mirko has made she'll take you." Mage said. "Though brace yourself, I think you're in for a wild ride with her."
"I've had plenty of those in my time." Marinette said before patting her boyfriend on the back. "Looks like you're taking Mage's offer then Adrien."
"I think I will." Adrien said. "I have a few good offers from high ranked heroes like Yoroi Musha and Shishido, the former is the number 8 hero and the latter the number 13, so both are good, and I've read a bit about them but not much. What do you know of them Mage?"
"I'd say rank them after me, but I will take you when the paperwork comes." Mage said simply. "I don't know Shishido well but he's the Lion Hero and think he has a mutant Quirk that gives him lion-like powers. He's probably a decent fit for your style, he's a pretty physical brawler of a hero from what I know, but not Quirk, he's better with people whose Quirks are more full body or direct combat focused. Yoroi Musha I don't get along with at all."
"Why not?" Adrien asked.
"Because he's a hypocritical man with limited fortitude." Mage said simply. "He comes off as very traditional Japanese in his armor and weapon, which does help his image and hides his Quirk well, so well that I don't know what it is in fact, and he talks a good game about honor and the mission of heroes but it's all a front. In reality he's in it for fame and respect and he has gotten that. He lacks the conviction for hard times should the public ever turn on him and will be one the first to crack if shit hits the fan."
"Huh not my kinda guy then." Adrien said thinking on what Mage had told him about the Equipped Hero. "But his ranking is enough for me to list him third."
"Good idea." Mage said with a nod. "You won't have to worry though; you'll be with me Adrien and as you are with me, you will be living in the agency, not here though it is the same building jus the lower half."
"About that." Adrien said. "What will the internship look like?"
"It's going to be a whole lot of fun." Mage said with a grin that didn't put Adrien at ease at all. "It will be a mix of everything you need to know about the hero world but I'm getting a fellow Guardian to come in and work with you on your close combat skills. You've improved with Ojiro, but this guy is the martial artist of our order, so he's going to help get you into shape and with my magic we can really work hard on it. That will only be part of it. We'll also patrol, and I'll explain the hero system more to you."
"Sounds good." Adrien said. "I look forward to what I can learn from you."
"You may have to explain that to me afterwards." Marinette said. "I don't think Mirko will be big on that."
"No, no she won't." Mage said shaking his head. "She'll teach you more about the whole action side of being a hero. She's wealthy because of her appeal but she's not like Uwabami who goes out of her way to earn more through her celebrity, and she's doesn't care about the bureaucratic stuff beyond the bare minimum she has to deal with."
"Well should be fun anyway." Marinette said as she yawned before she could stop it. "But I think we should get to bed. It's going to be a big day tomorrow when we hand in our forms and start getting ready for our internships."
"Probably a good idea." Mage said as he grinned at them. "Have fun, I'm off to likely pull several kwamis out of the various different liquors that they are no doubt currently marinating in while Vina appears to laugh at them."
With that Mage vanished into thin air leaving a confused and slightly embarrassed pair of teens blinking at what he'd said. It was a bit abrupt, but it was the end of their chat and they'd made their decisions, so it made sense for him to leave.
"Well, I guess it is off to sort out the forms and then bed." Adrien said with a yawn of his own. "Well and homework of course."
"Yes but I think we should try out that cheerleader outfit Momo made me." Marinette said with a wink. "I did keep it after all so we can get some use out of Mineta and Kaminari's trick."
"I did like you in that outfit m'lady." Adrien said as they got up and headed to Adrien's room where they usually slept. "It really suited you."
"Come on kitty." Marinette said as they walked glad that everything had been sorted and looking forward to their internships. "I'm going to rock your world tonight. We will be away from each other for a week, the first time we've been apart since we got here. I need to make sure you have something to remember me by while I'm away."
Adrien just grinned like a Cheshire chat at his girlfriend's words as they made their way to his room. Tonight was going to be memorable, as would be their internships. Little did either know what was in store for one of them when their internships rolled around.
Ah a nice little bit of foreboding right at the end for the arc to come when our heroes start their internships and deal with the first time they are apart as Marinette heads off to work with Mirko and Adrien stays with Mage. Only time will tell what will be in store for them as we move on to the start of the internships for our heroes as they further integrate into this world and face their next challenges.
