Don't say anything tonight If you're gonna say goodbye
Alone in their room, Mr. Nosy had discovered his best friend's diary, and now he was reading it. He sat up in his bed, notebook in hand as he read what Mr. Small wrote. He was curious to know what his closest friend thought about.
After reading several pages, most of which didn't seem out of the ordinary, mainly just description of what the two of them did in the last few weeks, he came to a part of the diary that had more in depth description of the small Mr. Man's feelings– feelings that Mr. Small never mentioned to Mr. Nosy.
As he read, his eyes widened in shock and surprise.
Today Mr. Nosy and I went to see a movie, he silently read to himself. Even though I tried so hard not to, I found myself imagining that it was a date and that it would end with a marvelous kiss. But just letting that thought cross my mind only made me feel disappointed when we got home and Mr. Nosy announced that he was going to bed, completely unaware of my feelings for him.
Mr. Nosy kept reading, the hidden feelings his best friend clearly felt for him only deepening the farther into the diary he got. He was just reading about how Mr. Small fell in love with him when the sound of the front door shutting startled him, followed by Mr. Small's voice calling out his name.
Quickly, heart racing in fear that Mr. Small would walk in and find him reading his diary, the light green Mr. Man closed the notebook and threw it back into the drawer of the nightstand and closed it. Then he climbed off his bed, acting like he wasn't up to anything as he called out," I'm in the bedroom!"
The door opened and Mr. Small walked in, grinning and holding his hands behind his back as if he was hiding something.
Curiosity got the best of Mr. Nosy, making him forget about what he just read in his friend's diary. He met Mr. Small in the middle of the room.
"What ya got there?" he asked, trying to look behind Mr. Small, but the small Mr. Man kept moving so Mr. Nosy couldn't see.
Mr. Small giggled and brought his hands around him to reveal that he had been holding a heart-shaped box. He opened the lid, showing Mr. Nosy that it was full of chocolate.
As soon as Mr. Nosy saw the shape of the box, he gasped and stumbled backwards. Instantly he remembered what he read in Mr. Small's diary, and it surprised him that Mr. Small would be as bold as to bring him a heart-shaped box full of chocolate when he had a diary full of secret thoughts and feelings toward his best friend that he was apparently afraid of telling Mr. Nosy.
Mr. Small clearly noticed Mr. Nosy's reaction, for he quickly said," This was the only kind of box they had at the store. I didn't think it would matter that much, but obviously it does…" His voice trailed off as he closed the box and hid it behind his back again, his face turning red with embarrassment.
Instantly, Mr. Nosy felt guilty for the way he acted. He shook his head and tried to assure his friend," Oh, it's not that… It's just…" He stopped talking before he confessed that he had been reading Mr. Small's diary. He didn't know how the small man would feel if he found out Mr. Nosy discovered his true feelings by reading about them instead of Mr. Small telling him himself.
For several moments, Mr. Small just looked up at him until finally he let out a heavy sigh and walked over to his bed, murmuring out an apology as he walked past his friend.
Oh, I didn't mean to upset him… Mr. Nosy thought with a heavy heart, watching as Mr. Small put the box of chocolate on the nightstand before climbing onto the bed and laying down. He felt so bad for hurting his best friend's feelings.
He glanced at the box, unable to stop himself from wondering if the store only had that kind of box, or… Was Mr. Small trying to confess his feelings for him, but now Mr. Nosy made him lose his confidence?
Mr. Nosy opened his mouth, but he couldn't begin to think what to say to make his friend feel better. He shifted his feet, his eyes glued to the floor. "I… I'm going for a walk," he stammered, and he paused, waiting for his friend to say something or to offer to come with him, but Mr. Small just laid there on the bed with his legs hanging over the edge. He didn't even give any sign that he had heard Mr. Nosy.
Head down, Mr. Nosy slowly walked to the bedroom door, wishing and hoping that his friend would call him back so they could talk about what just happened, but still Mr. Small said nothing.
Once outside, Mr. Nosy let the air blow into his face and felt the sunshine beating down on him. He could feel his body relaxing, but he still felt guilty about the way he had reacted when it was clear Mr. Small was only doing something nice for his love.
"I just wasn't expecting something like that," he muttered. He wished he could have talked to his friend, but after that, he knew Mr. Small wouldn't want to talk to him. He thought maybe it appeared that he was disgusted by the gesture, but it just surprised him so much. He still really liked Mr. Small, even if he wasn't completely sure that he returned the same feelings Mr. Small had for him.
With a deep sigh, Mr. Nosy began to walk down the sidewalk. He was trying to figure out a way to make it up to Mr. Small, but he couldn't get over his worry and guilt. Finally, he stopped and realized he was in the park. He walked over to a bench and sat down. He needed to talk to someone, but who could he call?
He thought really hard about it, then one name stuck out above all the rest, and he briefly wondered why her, but he decided to call her anyway. Maybe she'd be able to help him.
He pulled out his cell phone and dialed her number, tensely waiting for her to answer.
"Miss. Chatterbox speaking."
"Hey, it's Mr. Nosy."
"Oh hey Mr. Nosy!"
"What are you doing right now?" he asked.
"What am I doing?" she echoed, giggling. "I'm totally driving a crane!"
"A crane? That sounds really difficult to do!" How was she driving a crane? He didn't even think she could drive a car!
"Oh no," she said. "It's really easy. It's just knobs and levers. Red, orange, green."
"Oh well. Be careful." He took a deep breath. "Miss. Chatterbox, I need your help with something. I… um… I read Mr. Small's diary."
"Mr. Nosy!" she gasped. "I can't believe you read his diary!"
"I was curious!" he defended himself. "Besides, he wrote about me, so shouldn't I be allowed to read it?" Was that true or was that something he was trying to convince himself was true? Was he wrong to read his best friend's diary?
"It doesn't matter if it was about you or not!" she told him. "Some things are just private!" There was a short pause before she asked," What did he write about me?"
He was surprised and was about to reply that he didn't write about her when suddenly someone shouted on the other end of the phone. Then Little Miss Chatterbox called," Hey, Mr. Tickle! See you at lunch!"
Then immediately following there was a crash, and Mr. Nosy was worried about his friend. "Are you okay?" he asked.
She didn't reply at first, and when she finally did, she was talking about driving a crane again. "I mean, anyone can operate a crane!" she declared. "It's so simple!"
"Yes, Miss. Chatterbox, but I need your–"
"I'm not sure about this job though," she went on as if he hadn't spoken. "To be honest, it's kinda boring!" There was a pause again, but right when he was about to speak again, she said," Whoops, the boss is here! I better go!" And she hung up.
Now what? he thought, putting his phone in his pocket. He didn't know what he could do. "Maybe I should go talk to him," he said out loud.
He didn't get up for a while. Finally, he started making his way back to the observatory.
But when he spotted their house, Mr. Nosy halted and just stared at it. He suddenly felt like he couldn't face Mr. Small.
"What if he's mad at me?" the light green Mr. Man murmured to himself. "What if he doesn't want to see me?"
What if Mr. Small thought Mr. Nosy didn't want anything to do with him after the way he reacted to the heart-shaped box?
"Oh, why did I react like that?" he asked out loud, feeling disgusted with himself even though he knew he'd only been surprised. His little buddy was the same as he's always been even though Mr. Nosy found out something new about him. He could have always liked other Mr. Men and Mr. Nosy just had no idea, but that didn't change the small man at all.
Suddenly Mr. Nosy began to wonder how long his best friend has been in the closet, and now he must think everyone would react the way Mr. Nosy did if he came out.
"I don't deserve such a good friend." Mr. Nosy hated himself, and he had to make sure Mr. Small knew he didn't care what gender he liked; he will always be Mr. Nosy's little buddy.
He took a deep breath and walked to the house, opening the door and walking in. After he closed the door behind him, he went farther in the living room.
"Mr. Small?" he called out, but there was no answer.
Confused, he walked to the bedroom, but he was surprised to see it empty. "Where could he be?" he wondered as he walked over to the beds.
It was then that Mr. Nosy noticed a note on his friend's pillow, and he saw Mr. Small's diary beside it.
Curious, he reached for the piece of paper and started reading it out loud: "Dear Nose, I'm sorry about earlier, and I want you to know that I understand why you reacted that way. However, I feel like I can't stay here anymore. I feel like it might be time to say goodbye, even though it breaks my heart. I wish you the best of luck in life. Love Mr. Small. P.S. I bookmarked a page in my diary that I think you should read."
He lowered the paper and picked up the diary, sitting down on the bed. He opened it and looked over the bookmarked page, before flipping to the one before that. He turned back to the page Mr. Small wanted him to read, realizing this was the first entry Mr. Small wrote when he started having feelings for Mr. Nosy.
"Is there something wrong with me?" Mr. Nosy read the writing out loud. "I mean I always knew I was different from my friends, but why do I have to have feelings for him? And I know it's not just a crush. If only we could live the way I want to, and if only I could kiss him and love him the way I dream about. Is it wrong to have secret feelings for your best friend?"
Mr. Nosy paused in his reading, feeling like he was on the edge of crying. He didn't realize how much his friend suffered all these years, loving someone who never had a clue about his true feelings.
Shaking his head, he closed the diary, unable to read anymore. He stared down at it for a few moments until he threw it across the room. It hit the wall and fell to the floor.
He let out a frustrated sigh as he fell backwards, landing on his back on Mr. Small's bed. He looked up at the ceiling. When he blinked, he felt hot tears rolling out of his eyes and down his face.
"What have I done?" he asked himself, but he knew exactly what he's done. Thanks to him his dearest friend has left and might never return.
Stay tuned for the next chapter! This isn't the end yet!
