Chapter 618 Errand Girl

"

Jax waited until they were in the hospital's ER before finding a bathroom and calling Scarlett. Now that the situation had calmed down, he was beginning to feel the aches and pains of going down on his bike at high speed.

That fucking Mickey Smith. If he's been healthy, he would have been the one to kick his ass down the hill. Maybe with some time, he wouldn't want to drop him in a hole in Chigger Woods, but he doubted it. Between going down on his bike and getting his ass kicked down the hill, he might be dead already.

He pulled out his phone and called Scarlett.

"Hey, Scars," Jax said.

"Hmmm," she said, "this call is a little suspicious. You weren't going until tomorrow. Somehow I don't think you're calling because you missed me."

Scarlett was definitely a little too smart for his own good. Nothing got past her.

"So you won't believe that I just wanted to hear your voice?"

"No. What happened?"

"We had a little problem. A white pick-up drove through the bikes," Jax said. He was in a stall with the door closed, but he could hear someone at one of the urinals.

"Are you OK?"

"Banged up. Most of us are. We're at the San Joaquin General Hospital."

"That's bad," she said. He heard the apprehension in her voice. "Can you talk freely?"

"No, later when we're alone."

"Right. What can I do to help?"

Jax felt his heart grow warm. He loved Scarlett. His life used to be all about he MC and now it was deeper richer because she was in it. He was a damned lucky man even if she had sabotaged his clothes.

"I need you to run a major errand for me and then come to the hospital."

"OK."

He smiled. He knew he could count on her. That meant a lot to him. When he was with Wendy, she wasn't emotionally or physically stable enough for him to ever count on her. All the warning signs were there, but he'd ignored them because he hadn't wanted to be alone. When he thought about that dark time in his life, he felt like such a loser for marrying someone who clearly wasn't the right woman. And now, he had the beautiful amazing Scarlett.

"You have a pen and paper?"

"Just a second," there was a pause. "I'm ready."

Jax dictated a list of items she needed to buy and bring to the hospital. At the end of the list, she repeated everything back to make sure she had everything.

"Perfect, just like you," he said.

"Oh, that isn't going to get you out of owing me a big favor beyond reimbursement for all the expenses."

"How about a get out of punishment free credit for the next time you misbehave?" he suggested.

She laughed.

"You are going to have to do better than that."

"Let's negotiate the terms in person."

"OK, but it's going to cost you big."

"You are worth it," he said his voice husky. "I love you."

"I love you too. I'll text you when I'm near the hospital."

"Don't rush. We're going to be here for a few hours. Thanks, Scars."

"You're thanking me too soon. Wait until you get find out what you owe me."

"I still love you."

"That isn't going to get you a discount."

Jax laughed, held his ribs and bit back a groan.

"I gotta go. Bye."

"Bye."

Jax was smiling as he exited the toilet cubicle. A man glared at him went past him into the cubicle and slammed the door.

"Asshole," the man hissed.

"Have a good one," Jax said.

By the time he returned to the ER, two patrol officers had arrived. The hospital staff must have called them when they arrived and explained about the accident. He wasn't worried the officers would examine the bikes for paint transfers from the pick-up. Miles sent him a text to tell him the bikes were all loaded, covered with tarps and headed back to Charming. The guys had made quick work of it.

Jax spoke to the officers striking the perfect note between anger that someone would run down his friends riding their bikes and concern about them catching the driver.

The officers weren't hopeful about catching the driver since there was so little to go on. With California's skyrocketing crime rate, Jax doubted they would put much effort into a search. They had too many murders and assaults to deal with than spend time on a hit and run car crash. They were far too common in Cali.

After briefly talking to the guys, the officers gave them a number to call if they remembered anything and gave them a report number for their insurance carriers and left.

Jax and the guys looked at each other and grinned. The officers never thought to ask if they were members of a motorcycle club. If they had, it would have been a whole different story.

Maybe they should use this bit of luck and not mention this little accident to the other charters. They were seated in treatment rooms in the ER and unable to talk. He sent them a group text suggesting they not mention anything to the other chapters since the cops didn't ask their club name.

Everyone quickly agreed and Jax sent Juice a message to forget notifying the other clubs.

The MC just might get out of this with their reputation intact. Dealing with Scarlett was going to be another matter.
