Nothing about this case made any sense to L; it's clear that Light Yagami was Kira. He fit the profile. His family's notice Light exhibiting strange behaviour after the initial confrontation between L and Kira, which proved Kira lives in the Kanto region of Japan. Now he disappeared during the surveillance, helping a "friend" study for the entrance exam. All this points to Light being Kira yet; something doesn't fit right; something L's missing. Unbeknown to the task force, after the second day of surveillance on the Yagami household, L started scanning cameras to find where Light disappeared. He'd mostly been unsuccessful. Yagami seemed to avoid the cameras that L was tempted to contact Matt back at Wammy to see whether he would have better luck. L was close when he'd finally had a breakthrough. A camera in an apartment complex caught Light running to the lift; he looked over his shoulder to see whether he'd been followed. He didn't seem to notice the camera. Still, he gave it a clear shot of his face.

He looked genuinely scared. Of what L wasn't sure on. If Light knew about the cameras (which L suspected he did), it scared him that his reign as Kira is ending, L's finally closing in on him. Is he scared of dying, knowing that Kira would receive the death penalty for his crimes? This fear threw a curveball into everything L thought he knew about Kira. If Light knew that L's close to catching him, why isn't he trying to act normal, to through suspicion off him? It didn't make any sense why Light Yagami is acting like this.

"You wanted to discuss something, Ryuzaki," Watari said, drawing the detective from his thoughts. L nodded his head before gesturing to the empty chair beside him.

"Yes, Watari," L said, turning his attention to his mentor and guardian, "Is it possible for a suspect to find the cameras you placed in the Yagami household?"

"It's possible if they knew to look, but I made sure the cameras weren't obvious," Watari said, which raised the question of how did Light figure out about the cameras. They'd have seen him searching and finding one, but all Light did that first day of surveillance was returning home, resting on his bed before leaving and never coming back.

"I suspect Light Yagami was aware he's under surveillance and left home to avoid the cameras. What don't I understand is how he figured out there were cameras in the first place?" L said.

"He has a small security system on his bedroom door. His handle was raised slightly, and he kept a piece of paper stuck in his door. I put the piece of paper back in his door when I left, but maybe he had another system I didn't notice," Watari explained. L said there for a moment in silence, thinking over the ways this system could've alerted Light to the cameras. The teenager was clearly paranoid, a mindset he clearly gained during his time as Kira. Did Light expect L to make the connection? Hence, he set this security system up to be notified the second someone tampered with his room?

"So, he noticed the paper is back in his door and quickly rules his family out. From that, he deduced he's under surveillance and disappears. Why wouldn't he stay? Kira wants to reign over this world he's creating for a long time. Wouldn't that mean he needs to look innocent in the eyes of the police? Disappearing like this only creates the opposite response," L said.

"Maybe he couldn't risk you seeing how he kills and decided that being absent was the better approach than risking everything," Watari suggested. If Kira's ability to kill from a distance is the one thing that could keep him from being charged, then Light will not risk L seeing this but shouldn't Light return each night to keep up pretences. Kira hasn't faltered in his daily killing spree; this obviously doesn't look good for Light and practically confirms he is Kira.

"Watari, I think it's time to arrest Light Yagami," L said; it's the only way. Light Yagami is hiding something, and L would get to the bottom of this.

"Will you contact the task force?" Watari asked. L shook his head.

"No, we won't tell the task force until we have Light Yagami in custody." It's best they don't know what's happening until it's too late.
