Dean and Lavender

When Lavender announces that she and Dean are getting a divorce, Parvati isn't sure what to say. They'd been married ten years and, truthfully, Parvati hadn't had any inkling that either of them were particularly unhappy. Still, Lavender is looking at her expectantly for some kind of reaction, and so she says the first thing that comes to mind.

"It's all right, Lav. There are plenty more fish in the—"

"Finish that sentence and I will rip your fucking throat out," Lavender snaps. "I'm not twelve years old, for Merlin's sake. I'm getting divorced."

Parvati winces. "Sorry."

And all of a sudden, Lavender deflates. "No. I'm sorry, Parvati. I just…I don't need a pep talk right now, okay? I need a lot of alcohol."

Now that, Parvati can do. She jumps off the couch and hurries into the kitchen. She reaches for a bottle of red wine and then hesitates. After a moment, she puts the bottle down and picks up some tequila instead. When she returns to the lounge, Lavender plucks the bottle from her hand and, not even bothering to wait for a glass, takes a large gulp. In any other situation, Parvati might be impressed.

"You don't want to talk about it?" Parvati asks carefully.

"What's there to say? He says he doesn't love me anymore," Lavender responds, her voice dry. Then she scoffs. "Took him long enough to figure it out, didn't it?"

"Right." Parvati stares blankly at her friend. She looks at the half-empty bottle and sighs, getting to her feet. "We're going to need another one, aren't we?"

Lavender shrugs.

"I'm going to the store to get some." Parvati pauses. "And a mixer. You can't drink that shit straight all night."

"Some food would be good too."

"Right," Parvati agrees. "And some food. Ten minutes, all right? Try not to drown yourself in tequila before I get back."

And for the first time that evening, Lavender cracks a small smile.

"I make no promises," she says, bringing the glass rim to her lips once more.

Parvati smiles as she steps into the fireplace. For Lavender, it'll be a long night. Then it'll be a long week and then a long month. Hell, it might even be a long year. But Parvati's focused on tonight. And tonight—just for tonight—she can help. She's sure of that.
