A ROAD LESS WORN
The afternoon sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the training yard. The leaves had turned shades of red and gold, blanketing the ground in a colourful mosaic. Kakashi walked slowly towards the KIA monument, his hands in his pockets, the familiar ache in his chest a constant companion. He reached the monument, its cold stone surface etched with the names of fallen comrades. Kakashi stood there for a moment, taking in the names, each one a memory, a story, a loss. He knelt down, placing a hand on the monument, his fingers tracing the name of Obito Uchiha.
"Hey, Obito," he began softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
"It's been a while." He sat back on his heels, the cool breeze rustling the leaves around him.
"I met someone a few months ago. A pretty girl from outside of the village. Her name's Sachiko." Kakashi paused, a small smile playing on his lips as he remembered their conversations, the way she laughed, the way she thought about the world.
"She lives in a little hut deep in the woods, in a place called Sanctuary. It's a beautiful spot, peaceful and quiet. She's got this garden where she grows something called Blood Bush tea. It's a bit strong, but it has a unique flavour, kind of like iron. She always makes sure to serve it just right." He leaned back, his gaze shifting to the sky, the clouds drifting lazily overhead.
"Sachiko... she's different. There's something about her, Obito. The way she looks at things, the way she talks about her past and her family. She's got this amazing perspective on life. Even though she's been through a lot, she has this strength, this resilience. It's... inspiring." Kakashi chuckled softly, shaking his head.
"She has this horse-sized bear named Rikimaru. He is a spirit entity from a place called Mount Komorbeni that her family calls "Watchers". Guardians that have been bound to them for a long, long time. You'd think he'd be terrifying, but he's gentle with her. The bond they share is incredible." He closed his eyes for a moment, inhaling deeply, the scent of the fall air mixing with the memories of Sachiko's presence.
"She smells like... fresh tea and eucalyptus. It's comforting in a strange way. Like something you remember from long ago but can't quite place." Opening his eyes, he looked back at the monument, the weight of his words settling around him.
"I think you'd like her, Obito. She's got this way of making you feel at ease, of making you see the world a little differently. She's... special." Kakashi's voice grew softer, more introspective. He paused.
"She doesn't visit her grandfather's grave. She honours him by living in the home he built, by remembering him in everything she does. It made me think... maybe I can do that, too." Kakashi breathed, a soft smile tugging at his lips.
"I'll always come back to see you. But I think... I think it's time I start finding some peace for myself too. And I wanted to tell you about her because... well, because it feels right. Sharing this with you, it feels like you're still here, listening." He stood up slowly, brushing off his knees, his hand lingering on the monument.
"I'm still trying to figure things out, to move forward. But knowing there's someone like Sachiko out there... it helps. It gives me hope. Simply being able to exist without any expectations is restoring like no amount of rest or medication could ever be." Kakashi took a step back, his eyes lingering on Obito's name one last time.
"I'll keep visiting, and I'll keep talking to you. I just wanted you to know that... there's something good happening. Something worth looking forward to." With a final, lingering glance, he turned and walked away, the late afternoon sun casting a warm glow over the training yard. The leaves crunched under his feet as he made his way back, the thought of Sachiko and her little hut in the woods bringing a small, hopeful smile to his lips.
Walking through the darkness to Sanctuary, Kakashi's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, each one vying for attention as he contemplated the upcoming Chunin Exams. The weight of responsibility sat heavy on his shoulders as he considered the strengths and weaknesses of his team against the backdrop of his colleagues' teams. The thoughts seemed to pass through him, like the many trees that lined the little snaking road through the woods. They've come a long way since they first started training together. He's watched them overcome obstacles and grow stronger with each mission. Maybe it's time to let them spread their wings and see what they're capable of. Teamwork had become a great strength for them, but there were still areas where they could improve. Naruto's determination remained unmatched, but he still lacks finesse in his techniques. Sakura has shown promise in genjutsu, but Kurenai was already mentoring a team of her own. Perhaps they could explore other avenues for Sakura's growth? She has a keen eye for detail and a sharp mind - maybe focusing on tactics and strategy would be more beneficial for her development as a ninja. And Sasuke... he's grown stronger, but there's a darkness in him that will need to be monitored closely. The Chunin Exams are no joke. It's a dangerous test, and failure could have serious consequences. But they've faced tough challenges before and come out stronger. Maybe it's time to see how they fare on a bigger stage. Becoming Chunin isn't just about strength and skill—it's about leadership and strategy. If they pass the exams, it'll open up new opportunities for them and pave the way for their future growth as ninja.
Yet amidst the uncertainty, a sense of calm washed over him as he neared Sachiko's sanctuary, knowing that in her presence, the chaos of his thoughts finds a temporary respite. The weight of the world seemed to shift almost instantly as her gentle singing voice met him on a wave of earthy tea. It was like... stepping through something. A door, a waterfall, a curtain, even just a shroud of mist that separated peace and unending chaos. He made his way through the rushes, beyond the little wooden gate and up the steps to the door. He raised his hand and paused for a moment as her words whispered to him from a previous visit, but he did softly knock twice. A moment later, her voice called him inside and when he entered, he found her in the little kitchen over a boiling kettle. "Welcome back, Kakashi-san." she smiled warmly, and he returned the gesture.
"Like a moth to a flame, Sachiko-san." he teased softly. As Sachiko welcomed him back with a warm smile, Kakashi felt the tension in his muscles ease, a sense of tranquillity settling over him like a comforting blanket. Her presence had a way of soothing his troubled mind, offering him a reprieve from the weight of his responsibilities.
"Thank you for having me again," Kakashi replied with a soft chuckle, his gaze lingering on her serene expression.
"Your sanctuary is like an oasis in the desert." Sachiko's smile widened at his words, her eyes sparkling with warmth.
"I'm glad you think so. Please, make yourselves comfy. The tea will be ready shortly." As Kakashi settled onto the pillows at the low wooden table, he removed his gloves, laying them on the surface. He couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the simple yet profound comfort that Sachiko's company provided. In her presence, the chaos of the world seemed to fade into the background, replaced by a sense of peace and belonging that he rarely found elsewhere. Rikimaru was lying in his usual protective spot in the doorway to the garden, his massive form barring access either in or out. It was a good place to be, with a vantage over the entirety of the hut except for the bathroom and the loft. Kakashi had grown more comfortable in the bear's presence, but remained ever aware of those icy eyes watching him... waiting for him to display even the slightest hint of hostility. Then he would devour him in an instant, and the world would be none the wiser.
"Good evening to you, too. Master Rikimaru." Kakashi directed politely. The bear huffed, and then looked away from him. Despite growing more accustomed to the massive creature's presence, there was still an undeniable sense of caution that lingered whenever their paths crossed.
"Always on guard, aren't you?" Kakashi remarked lightly, though his words held a hint of respect for the bear's vigilant nature. He had come to understand that Rikimaru's protective instincts ran deep, a testament to the bond he shared with Sachiko. With a soft chuckle, Kakashi turned his attention back to Sachiko, who was busy preparing the tea with practised efficiency. The sight of her moving gracefully about the kitchen brought a sense of calm to his troubled mind, grounding him in the present moment amidst the looming uncertainties of the outside world.
"So, how was your day?" she asked as she joined him at the table, handing him a cup of steaming tea.
"It was... eventful, to say the least," he replied with a faint smile, his tone carrying a hint of amusement.
"The usual missions, reports to file, and training sessions with my team. Nothing out of the ordinary apart from the upcoming exams." He took a sip of the steaming tea, relishing its comforting warmth as it spread through his body.
"How about you? Any new developments in the world of herbal remedies and tea brewing?" She thought for a moment as she took the pot in her hands and filled her cup.
"Not really. I tried to make a pie with wild apples in the week... didn't turn out the way I had hoped. They're a bit harder than orchard apples, and they taste kind of... I don't know. Wild." she smiled as she replaced the teapot.
"It's just not the same." she sighed. Kakashi listened attentively, a small smile playing on his lips as Sachiko recounted her culinary experiment. He appreciated her openness and willingness to share even the simplest aspects of her life with him.
"Well, you never know until you try, right?" he remarked, his tone light and encouraging.
"It's all part of the process of experimentation and discovery. Besides, I'm sure it was still edible, even if it didn't meet your expectations." He took another sip of his tea, letting the soothing liquid warm him from within.
"And who knows, maybe next time you'll discover the perfect recipe for those wild apples. Perseverance and a willingness to adapt has paved the way to many a success." Kakashi continued to encourage, having found a delight in her kitchen experiments.
"Rikimaru seemed to enjoy it, which is not saying a lot... He eats everything except furniture." she joked, earning her a sideways glance from the great entity. Kakashi chuckled softly at Sachiko's remark, amused by her humour.
"Well, at least he appreciates your efforts. And it's good to know he has discerning tastes." he replied, casting a brief glance towards Rikimaru. He took another sip of tea, savouring the warmth and flavour as it spread through him.
"Speaking of Rikimaru, has he been behaving himself lately? No more mischief or surprises?" Kakashi hinted, and she laughed softly.
"He's calm as a breeze unless there are strangers nearby. But they never get close enough to see. They were probably just merchants or travellers... Not many shinobi move through here apart from an ANBU member or two, I think." she assured.
"That's good to hear," Kakashi replied, nodding thoughtfully.
"It's important to have some peace and quiet every now and then, especially with everything else going on." He glanced around the cosy interior of the hut, feeling a sense of calm settle over him. "This place really is a sanctuary, isn't it?" he remarked, a faint smile touching his lips.
"A place of safety. A place of peace." Sachiko defined the word, and it was reflected in the shine of her eyes. Safety. Peace. Hope... Kakashi nodded, his gaze meeting Sachiko's.
"Exactly. And I'm grateful to have found it," he admitted, his voice quiet but sincere.
"In a world filled with chaos and uncertainty, it's rare to find a place like this. Thank you for welcoming me here." He added, his tone soft with gratitude as he took a sip of his tea, savouring the earthy warmth that spread through him.
"And thank you for coming here. It... might have had less meaning otherwise." she said, a soft blush settling on her cheeks.
"I'm glad to hear that," Kakashi replied, a small smile playing on his lips.
"And I'm honoured to be a part of it." He paused, considering his next words carefully.
"You've created something truly special here, Sachiko-san. It's a haven amidst the storms of life." As he spoke, he couldn't help but admire the tranquil atmosphere of the tea hut and the genuine warmth that emanated from Sachiko herself. It was a stark contrast to the harsh realities of the shinobi world, and he found himself drawn to it more with each visit.
"I can't take the credit for creating it. The Hokage gave... maybe traded, this ground to my grandfather. He made it what it is now. I just... maintained it, I guess. But it's what I know, and prefer in many ways. The rush of the village, it's a bit much. You can't truly focus in that." she said softly, looking at the cup in her hands.
"It sounds like your grandfather left quite a legacy," Kakashi remarked, his gaze drifting to the flickering flames in the hearth.
"And you've carried it forward beautifully. This place feels like a refuge from the chaos of the world outside." He understood Sachiko's sentiment all too well. The hustle and bustle of the village could be overwhelming at times, and he often found solace in the quiet moments spent here, away from the noise and distractions of daily life.
"Mentioning chaos, how are things in the village?" she continued. Kakashi's expression shifted slightly, a hint of concern flickering in his single visible eye.
"They're... as hectic as ever, I suppose. The usual missions, training sessions, and the looming Chunin Exams adding to the frenzy. But amidst all that, there's an undercurrent of tension. The recent events in the neighbouring countries have put everyone on edge." He paused for a moment, considering his next words carefully.
"Recent events? What happened?" she asked carefully. Kakashi glanced at Rikimaru in the doorway. Who would carry news all the way out here, anyway? The birds? The squirrels? All Sachiko knew was what her grandfather had told her, and what she gained from her brief visits to the village every two weeks, or so... Kakashi sighed softly, his gaze shifting back to Sachiko. "There have been reports of increased activity from neighbouring villages, skirmishes along the borders, and rumours of rogue shinobi causing trouble. It's nothing new, really, but it's been happening more frequently as of late. The tension between the villages is palpable." He paused for a moment, his expression growing more sombre.
"And then there's Orochimaru," he said quietly, his tone tinged with a hint of unease.
"He's a rogue ninja, infamous for his experiments and dark ambitions. He's a threat that we can't afford to just ignore." he added, staring at the cup in his hand.
"I think my grandfather might have mentioned him. But... I don't know anything about him. Is he really that dangerous?" she asked. Kakashi nodded gravely.
"Yes, he is. Orochimaru is a highly skilled and cunning ninja with a thirst for power and knowledge. He's responsible for some of the darkest moments in our village's history, and his desire for immortality drives him to commit unspeakable acts." He paused, his gaze fixed on the flickering flames in the hearth.
"He's a master of forbidden techniques, capable of manipulating the very essence of life and death. He's not someone to be taken lightly." Kakashi's words hung heavy in the air, the weight of the threat Orochimaru posed casting a shadow over their peaceful sanctuary. Sachiko's expression shifted, her eyes reflecting a mix of concern and curiosity as she absorbed his words.
"You speak from experience..." Sachiko noted, and Kakashi nodded.
"Yes, unfortunately," Kakashi replied, a hint of sombreness in his voice. He shifted slightly, the memories of past battles and narrow escapes playing out in his mind.
"He's cunning and unpredictable. You never know what he's planning or when he'll strike next." Sachiko listened intently, her gaze never leaving Kakashi's face as he spoke. She could sense the weight of his experiences with Orochimaru, the lingering trauma that still haunted him.
"From your voice, you're fortunate to have survived that," Kakashi noted the whisper of a smile on her lips.
"I'm grateful to those who watched over you, then." Kakashi couldn't withhold a ghost of his own. It was far more than luck that saved him when he was under ANBU. Facing a rogue of that skill alone was suicide, but that Orochimaru chose not to kill him was still almost a celestial occurrence... whether he was too tired, or simply decided that a fourteen-year-old wasn't worth the effort... Kakashi nodded, his expression thoughtful.
"It wasn't just luck," he admitted. Kakashi's expression grew more serious, shadows of past encounters flickering in his eyes.
"I've faced Orochimaru directly only once before, during my time in ANBU. I was sent to eliminate him, but it didn't go as planned. He was stronger, more cunning than I anticipated. I barely escaped with my life." Sachiko's hand stilled on her cup, her eyes widening slightly.
"That must have been terrifying." Kakashi nodded slowly.
"It was. Facing someone like Orochimaru, you quickly realize how small you are in comparison. He's not just powerful; he's unpredictable. That makes him incredibly dangerous." Sachiko's eyes softened with empathy.
"It must have taken a lot of courage to face him. And even more to keep fighting afterwards." Kakashi shrugged, a hint of humility in his demeanour.
"You do what you have to, to protect those you care about. And to uphold your duty." He glanced around the peaceful hut, taking in the warmth and comfort it offered.
"But it's places like this, and people like you, that make it all worth it." Sachiko smiled gently, her earlier tension easing.
"I'm glad this place can offer you some peace." He returned her smile, a rare softness in his gaze.
"It does. More than you know." he sighed.
"I... I know what the ANBU is... and... mostly what they do, I think. It takes a... unique kind of person to endure that kind of life. And please don't misunderstand, since I don't know much... It's just... that existence doesn't seem to suit you as much as you thought. I can't see you... in that." Sachiko tried to say, and Kakashi listened to her words, his expression thoughtful. Then, as if hit with a spark of whimsy, he laughed.
"You're very kind. Very... untainted. But... you don't know what I was like." he humoured, meeting her bright eyes. There was a depth to them, something far beyond the extent of seeing.
"I'm aware of that, that's why I asked you not to misunderstand. It's just that... have you ever had the sense that everything that you do know doesn't change what you feel?" she asked, her gaze searching his.
Kakashi paused, the weight of her words settling over him. Her perception stuck with him, making him question his own level of awareness.
"I suppose... I've never thought about it that way," he admitted quietly, the usual barriers in his voice beginning to soften.
"Sometimes, what we feel goes beyond what we know. It's... deeper," she said gently.
"Maybe you're right," he said, a hint of a smile touching his lips.
"Maybe there's more to this than I've allowed myself to see. But... You're not wrong," he said after a moment.
"The ANBU requires a certain detachment, a willingness to set aside your own feelings and just follow orders. It was necessary for me at the time, but it's not who I am now. Or at least, not who I want to be." Sachiko nodded, her eyes reflecting understanding and compassion.
"It must be difficult to reconcile those parts of yourself. To find a balance between duty and... well, being human." Kakashi looked down at his cup, the steam curling up and disappearing into the air. "It is. But being here helps. Talking with you, spending time in this place... it makes it easier to remember that there's more to life than just duty." Sachiko smiled softly, her voice gentle.
"I'm glad I can help in some way. Everyone needs a sanctuary, a place where they can just be themselves." Kakashi looked up, meeting her gaze.
"You've given me more than just a place to escape. You've given me a reason to look forward to something. That's... something I haven't had in a long time." Sachiko's cheeks flushed slightly, but her smile remained.
"Then I'm happy you're here, Kakashi-san. This place, Sanctuary, is as much for you as it is for me." He nodded, feeling a warmth that went beyond the tea and the fire. In this peaceful corner of the world, amidst the chaos of their lives, they had found something rare and precious. Something worth holding onto.
"I was part of ANBU for a long, long time. But... it wasn't all bad. I reported directly to the Hokage, and I even got to look after his wife when she was expecting a baby." he said, a touch of softness in his voice.
"Aw, that's so sweet. She must have felt so safe with you taking care of her." Sachiko praised with a gentle smile, and Kakashi chuckled.
"I don't know. I can't say that she knew about it... not that she needed me to. She was perfectly capable of handling herself." he said, and Sachiko laughed softly.
"I suppose it would take a remarkable woman to be the Hokage's wife." Kakashi nodded, a fond smile touching his lips.
"She was. Kushina was fierce and strong, yet kind. She had a presence that made you feel safe just by being around her. And she had the most striking red hair, much like yours. It was the first thing I noticed when we met." Sachiko poured more tea, her movements graceful and calm.
"It sounds like you admired her a lot." she breathed as the soothing liquid spilled into the cup.
"I did," Kakashi admitted.
"She was kind and gentle in so many ways, hiding the ferocity that she held so deeply. She was always looking out for everyone, even when she was the one who needed the most protection." Sachiko looked thoughtful, her eyes soft.
"It must have been hard, watching over someone you cared about so much, knowing the dangers they faced." Kakashi took a sip of his tea, the warmth spreading through him.
"It was. But it was also an honour. I learned a lot from her and from Minato-sensei. They taught me more than just how to be a ninja. They taught me how to care, how to protect those who are important." he recalled, the many memories of their training, and their missions flashing through his mind.
"And now you have new people to protect," Sachiko said gently. Kakashi looked at her, his heart swelling with a mix of emotions.
"Yes, and I'm grateful for that. To have a purpose to hold on to, and a place where I can let all of it go. You've given me something I didn't know I needed." he said softly. Sachiko's cheeks flushed again, but she held his gaze.
"I'm glad. Truly, I am." They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the crackling of the fire and the gentle rustle of the night outside adding to the serene atmosphere. In this moment, they both found a sense of peace and belonging, something rare and precious in their tumultuous lives.
