Draco and Pansy

Daphne blinked as Draco suddenly stood from his chair and exited the carriage, sliding the door closed so firmly that the wood pulsed and the windows rattled. She turned to Pansy with curious eyes, noting that her eyes were watery and clenched fists were white.

But Daphne had never been one for subtleties and so she wasted no time, simply asking, "What was that about?"

"Nothing," Pansy snapped.

Daphne was quick to disagree, shaking her head. Whatever it had been, it had not been nothing. She seldom saw Draco so obviously vexed except, of course, when he was in the presence of one Harry Potter. And while Daphne had noticed a stiffness in his shoulders and a sharpness in Pansy's tone, she genuinely had no idea what had been said to prompt such a reaction.

"Well..." Daphne drew out the word, thoughtful. "It seemed like something."

"He's being a child."

Daphne raised her eyebrows. "Well, that's hardly news. But why?"

"Because you asked if I managed to see much of Blaise over the holidays."

"Why on earth would that—oh." Daphne's mouth dropped open. "You and Draco? I mean, I guess it was bound to happen eventually, but I didn't know that it had actually happened! Why didn't you say anything?"

"It wasn't a big deal." Pansy shifted in her seat, clearly uncomfortable. "At least, it wasn't a big deal to me."

"Oh."

All of a sudden, Pansy lurched forward, looking earnestly at Daphne. There was a pleading in her eyes that Daphne had never seen before. She grasped Daphne's hands in hers tightly.

"He knew I have a thing for Blaise," Pansy said insistently. "I told him that if we—ugh, you know—that it wouldn't be serious. It's not my fault that he didn't bloody believe me."

"Oh." Daphne leaned back in her chair, considering. Then, in what she hoped was a sympathetic tone, she said, "I wouldn't worry about it. He'll get over it."

"Yeah." Pansy rolled her eyes. "Draco strikes you as the forgiving type, does he?"

"Ah..." She didn't even try to cover up her wince. She gave Pansy a weak smile. "Well, it might be a long year."

Pansy exhaled. "Yeah. I think it will be."
