Ever since Bella had met Professor Arronax; they had been trying to figure out who the Phantom was, fighting off newborns vampires and madmen, and being very observant on what was going on with the others of Dracula's attack. However it was Mina that shocked them.
Mina had gotten a job with the government and met with Captain Nemo, which shocked Professor Arronax. Then Mina was getting things ready like getting Quincey ready to live with Jonathan over the months until it was finally May. Mina went to sea on the Nautilus meaning the Phantom started sending out more of his agents.
-June-
"Geez what did Mina do?" Bella asked aloud, as she saw her sister and Quatermain being chased by an angry mob.
"Your sister looks quite fun," cackled a newborn vampiric woman, "you should let us meet her-"
Bella ripped her head and chucked it into the soon to be bonfire. After pushing the rest of the newborn into the fire Bella dived away from gunshots.
"That's not fair!" Shouted a man from the rafters, before he started to shoot rapidly at the floor. "Come out, get hit, and then die bloodsucker!!"
"You really know how to talk to a lady," Bella said very sarcastically while figuring a way to get the gun away from him.
"If you don't come out," the man said with the sound of a gun being loaded, then he started laughing, "I'll just shoot that scarf wearing witch and the old man. I always wanted to brag about killing the famous Allan Quatermain."
Bella felt her blood boiling as she tried to figure out a way to tear this man to shreds. When a familiar voice spoke up.
"Oh when you put it like that…"
Before Bella could speak someone slipped out from the pillars next to her and shot the gunman it was followed by a sickening thud. Bella didn't have time to process what happened as she was pulled out of the now burning building. Bella looked away from the building collapsing behind her to the man guiding her to the docks. She noticed how his blond hair shined against the sunlight.
"Mr. Sawyer?" Bella asked, feeling her heart starting to race.
Sawyer looked back at her with that smile he flashed at her before. As they were sneaking past the angry mob.
"Hello again Miss Murray," he said quietly, "I see that we're both after the Phantom, huh?"
"So we have a new member now."
Sawyer jumped as he saw Arronax next to them. As Bella turned to look at the mob, they were looking at each other in confusion and ignoring their existence. Sawyer noticed it too.
"Whoa," he muttered, "no one is looking at us. As if something is blocking us from their sight."
"Someone is," Bella responded, nodding to Arronax's glowing eyes. Sawyer stared at him in surprise.
"We need to follow them quickly," Arronax said, "who knows where they're going, who is next, and what our little Phantom problem has up his sleeves."
The duo followed after the Professor, ready to fight whatever their next location.
-June 27, 1898-
"Is he always like that then?" Bella asked Sawyer as they carefully followed Quatermain and Mina as they bickered about their sea captain and whoever they were looking for.
"Not all the time," Sawyer replied, "but he hasn't been so sober in a while."
Bella nodded as she continued her questions, "How did you meet him?"
Sawyer sighed and replied, "He taught me how to shoot a gun on a misadventure we were thrown into together. But we became friends over that adventure and I couldn't let him get hurt, you know."
Bella nodded as she looked at Mina's red scarf, she understand where Mr. Sawyer was coming from. They looked away, acting like a couple, when the older man looked at them quizzically before guiding Quatermain and Mina away.
"That was close," Sawyer said as they continued walking onward. Bella was blushing as she nodded in agreement.
"Miss Murray?"
Bella looked stunned to see Professor Van Helsing walking up towards her. Bella felt her body tense as Sawyer looked on in confusion.
"Hello Professor," Bella said, "it's good to see you again."
"You as well my dear child," Van Helsing said, "but I'm curious as to why you're here though."
"Oh," Bella began, trying to figure out how she'll explain why she was here again after the vampire attack, "that's because-"
"My aunt wanted to see her in her wedding dress."
Bella and Van Helsing looked at Sawyer, who smiled at the older man.
"You're Professor Van Helsing, right?" Sawyer asked. After the older man nodded, Sawyer extended his hand as he continued, "I'm Tom Sawyer, a friend of Quincey Morris."
"Oh right," Van Helsing said sadly, "I'm sorry that you had to hear about his passing."
Sawyer looked away sadly as Bella looked at him with a frown.
'He must've been shocked to hear about his grief's death,' Bella thought until Van Helsing's voice spoke up again.
"If Miss Murray is meeting your aunt to show off her wedding dress, then are you two engaged?"
Both looked surprised and embarrassed, as Sawyer explained, "Yes, we were talking about his and Miss Lucy's deaths, then as we continued to talk it led to an engagement."
Van Helsing's eyes landed on Bella's hand to see it bare of an engagement ring when Sawyer spoke up.
"The ring I used for the engagement was a family heirloom and it was too big. So my aunt wants to see Isabella so she can see if any of the other rings will fit her."
Van Helsing smiled at that as he replied, "I see. I wish you both a happy marriage."
"Thank you Professor," Bella said kindly, now holding onto Sawyer's arm. The vampire hunter Professor nodded before walking away. After he was out of earshot and sight Bella stared up at the blond man with a questioning gaze.
"We're engaged now?" Bella asked, making Sawyer blush.
Sawyer explained, "Well I didn't want him to get too suspicious about why an unmarried lady would be in a different country."
Bella smiled as she said, "It's alright. To be honest my friend Lucy and sister always said they should find you and try to get us engaged."
Sawyer blushed even more as he said, "Let go find your sister and Quatermain now."
Bella laughed as she followed him. But both couldn't get the thought out of their minds.
'Engage to him/her, doesn't sound too bad.'
-Later that night-
"Is he dead?" Sawyer asked quietly as he, Bella, and the man that just helped them knock out another insane man from trying to burn down the building that Mina, Quatermain, the old detective, and whoever was just dropped from the second story window were in.
"I doubt it," the man beside them scoffed, "Both of them didn't die twelve years ago. So I doubt this will kill either one now."
Turns out the man was right about the man, who was named Hyde apparently, being alive. They followed from the rooftops until they got to docks and watched an unconscious Hyde being put into the Nautilus followed by Nemo, Quatermain, and Mina. As the submarine left the dock, the old detective looked up at the rooftop that the trio were watching from.
As they moved backwards Bella could hear the man chuckle.
"As brilliant as your sister, I see."
As he left Arronax motioned for them on the boat they've been using to get places. They got to the boat, bringing the man with them.
"What's your name?" Arronax asked the man that came along with them.
"Ripper," the man responded, "Jack Ripper."
-July 3rd-
"Anyone got eyes on this man?!" Sawyer hissed while trying to figure out where this invisible menic was. He felt his blood boiling over how whoever this man was trying to attack Isabella, who turned into a cat and is now in a tree.
"No," Arronax replied, "Ripper and I got blinded."
Sawyer had his back against a tree with his gun ready to shoot.
Clang!
Thump!
Sawyer blinked as a paint can hovered over an impression of a man. The can was placed gently beside the impression before grabbing a blanket from the trees and a needle filled with something. After the blanket dropped onto the invisible man before the needle was injected into the man's arm.
The air was filled with the man's screams as he shook and turned visible. Whatever was happening sounded painful.
"Don't just stand there. RUN NOW!"
After getting away from the screaming man and upcoming police, the group studied the now floating trench coat and clothes.
"Who are you?" Bella asked after turning back into a human.
"One of the poor victims in the Phantom's experiments," replied the now grease-pained face.
"Victims?" Sawyer asked just as Ripper repeated horrified, "Experiments?"
"For what?" Arronax asked, being more calm than the others.
"What those three brought out from the school," their invisible informant nodded to the carriage, "caused mass hysteria where I lived, getting my brother killed during it. Everyone were tense and scared until one day this Phantom man claimed to help the victims get revenge. I got dragged into this since people believed I wanted the most revenge since I was still grieving my brother's death."
"And you don't?" Bella asked. "Want revenge on whoever was terrorizing your town?"
"Not really but I don't like him," the man sighed, "he made my brother invisible as an escape goat. Using that logic I should want for revenge on everyone who murdered my brother."
The four looked at each other as the man continued, "But I can't sit back as the Phantom using scared people, making them go mad and die within six weeks to six months."
Everyone tensed up hearing that.
"He's using half baked formulas from someone who stole the research from the original invisible man," the man replied, "to make people invisible. It works as you saw, but the bodies start getting sick before finally giving out."
"What about you?" Ripper asked. "How long do you have left?"
"I did have two months after noticing the signs," the man responded, "but instead of just accepting my death, I stole the half bake and the real research from where it was hidden and worked out the way to make my body used to being invisible and multiple antidotes for it."
"You've been lugging this outfit, antidotes, and the research around with you?" Sawyer asked, amazed.
"Of course not," the man responded, "once I figured out which parts were real I jolted it all down then left the half baked ones in the books so when the police found and returned them back to the original thief, he'll have an idea of who stole them.
"Clever," Ripper said with a laugh, "but you still haven't given us your name."
"Rodney Skinner," the invisible man said, "Gentleman thief."
