Chapter 21 Operation: Rebirth
Its been a few weeks since Alex had joined the X men and since his sister Dana came back.
Jean and Rogue's pregnancy were going along just fine right now as they were examined every week to make sure the babies were just fine.
Right now Sean was on his bike on the open road to clear his head.
However thats when his enhanced hearing and sense of smell picked something up.
"Hmm?" Sean said before his metal claws came out and saw a helicopter of a specific design he was all too familiar with. "Oh what is that cyclops up to now?" Sean asked heading into the woods before a couple trucks followed him.
"Great." Sean said annoyed before cutting up a tree making it fall over blocking them from following.
Thats when he came to a cliff before another helicopter appeared.
"Hold it right there Kruger!"
Coming out of the Helicopter was a man with white skin grey hair and an eyepatch on his left eye.
"It's been a long time."
This was Nick Fury. The Director of SHIELD.
"Hey Nick." Sean said as he jumped down. "Look I already told you I'm not interested in working with SHIELD. Not my thing. I just want a simple life...Or as simple as it can get." Sean said.
"I know. I'm not here to recruit you again Kid. I need your help." Fury said.
"With what? You got thousands of people in your work. Why come to me?" Sean asked.
"Rebirth has been stolen." Nick said making his eyes widen before frowning.
"What do mean stolen? I know about that project. My dad told me all about it. Rogers, Logan and my grandfather destroyed it completely!" Sean yelled.
"Or so we thought. Turns out there was a backup of it. SHIELD discovered it 17 years ago. We went to your father about this since it was a touchy subject with Logan. He recommended it be placed under the highest security. He thought maybe in years to come it could be used to heal people. With that in mind we placed it under level 5 security. Since your father isn't around anymore we came to you." Fury said.
"And yet it still got stolen? Who did it?" Sean asked.
"That we don't know." Fury said showing him a picture of the vault showing it was messed up. "That is a Titanium steel door and knocked out surveillance with some kind of magnetic interference." Fury said.
"Erik." Sean said through grit teeth.
Later
"They did what?" Logan asked.
"Found a backup of Rebirth and hid away by my father's suggestion thinking it could be used to heal people. You can't deny his heart was in the right place." Sean said.
"No I can't. But still they should have told me." Logan said.
"I know the feeling." Sean said.
"What exactly is Project Rebirth?" Charles asked.
"A very early attempt of genetic engineering. The idea was to create super soldier." Sean said.
"Crud but powerful." Logan said.
"A master race?" Charles asked.
"Nah. These were the good guys. They didn't mean it like that. In times of war desperate times call for desperate measures as you well know." Sean said.
"Yes. Was it ever used on anyone?" Charles asked.
"One." Sean said.
"Steve Rogers." Logan said surprising him.
"The famous Captain America?" Charles asked.
"How else do you think he got to be as he was during the war?" Sean asked.
"Sounds as though Logan knew him personally." Charles said.
"I did. So did Sean's grandfather. Marcus Kruger. Special Commando forces during the war." Logan said.
"I knew you were older than you looked but world war 2. I thought most of your memory was lost." Charles said.
"Yeah well some memories aren't meant to be lost." Logan said.
"Yup." Sean said.
"But I'm confused though. If the project was so successful why wasn't it used again?" Charles asked.
"Because it destroyed him. It had a design flaw in it. They didn't know until after Rogers showed signs later on." Sean explained.
"And now it's in the hands of Magneto." Sean said making Charles narrow his eyes. "Whatever Erik needs it for I can only assume the very worst." Sean said.
Later
Jean and Rogue were talking before they noticed the lights flickering.
"Only one of two reasons for that. Either a power surge or Cerebro at full power." Jean said getting up.
"Why would they need it at full power?" Rogue asked following her.
"I can only assume the Professor is looking for someone." Jean said as they went to the lower levels.
"Fucking christ. More and more Mutants are showing up everywhere." Sean said seeing them all.
"Yes. Percentage of people with the X gene is increasing greatly every day. It won't be long until the secret is out in the country." Charles said.
"Well, at least they can live peacefully everywhere else." Sean said.
"This might be why he's become more active lately." Charles said.
"I don't care why he's becoming more active. He's becoming a pain lately." Sean said.
"Have you found him yet?" Logan asked as Rogue and Jean looked in.
"Regretfully no. Magneto's cloaking technology has been keeping pace with Cerebro's enhancements." Charles said.
"Ah. He would go somewhere he knows he'll be safe. Somewhere remote...Got any ideas Rogue?" Sean asked grinning making her widen her eyes as she and Jean looked in. "Can't hide from this." Sean said pointing to his nose making her smile.
"Remember during the fight against Magneto in New York? That I touched him just for a second? I got a glimpse of his memories." Rogue said. (I forgot to add that in during the Angel Chapter)
"Yeah so you got an idea where it might be?" Sean asked.
"Well theres this big metal dome burried in rocks. I think it's in the Sahara desert." Rogue said.
"Yeah that does sound like him." Sean said.
"So only you two are going?" Jean asked.
"This is more personal for the both of us." Sean said.
"Yeah." Logan said as they left.
"Whats going on with them?" Rogue asked.
"Magneto has stolen a device that once created the famous Captain America." Charles said shocking them.
"That explains why you needed to find him. But why are they taking it so personally?" Jean asked.
"Logan and Sean's grandfather knew him personally back during the war. You know Logan is older than he actually looks. And Sean wants to do this for his grandfather since he fought side by side with them during the war." Charles said.
"I get it." Rogue said.
Later
Sean and Logan were in the X jet heading towards where Erik was at.
"So what are you going to do when we find him?" Logan asked Sean.
"I'm ending this today. He's caused nothing but problems and I've fucking had it. I know my grandfather wouldn't really approve but we both know he's not the same since the day you three met him in that old prison camp." Sean said making him nod remembering.
Flashback during WW2
"A team of three. Specifically, you three. Cap, I believe you've met Logan. He's with Canadian special forces and then theres Major Marcus Kruger. Spartan Commandos. From what I hear both of them are just a tough as you." The Lieutenant said as they were on a plane heading somewhere.
Marcus had white skin blue eyes and white hair with a scar on his left eye going down to his neck.
"Whats the mission exactly Lieutenant?" Marcus asked in a no nonsense voice.
"Major, You three are going to liberate a POW camp in Poland. But for the safety of the prisoners, it has to be fast, real fast."
"How fast is real fast?" Logan asked.
"Put it this way. You don't get parachutes."
"Hmm. I think we'll be just fine. Just don't be late or well...You don't want to know what happened to the last guy who disappointed me." Marcus said making him gulp before walking away making Marcus chuckle. "Oh that never gets old." Marcus said.
"You were screwing with him?" Rogers asked amused as Logan chuckled.
"Being my rank has perks." Marcus said.
At the camp several prisoners looked out seeing the search lights passing their room.
One of the Nazi's patrolled the fence before hearing the plane coming in before yelling as it smashed into a tower making it fall on top of him.
The camp after that was on full alert and tried shooting them down.
Marcus, Logan and Rogers jumped down into the guards quarters before Marcus pulled out a knife and slashed their throats with ease.
"GET THE PRISONERS NOW!" Marcus yelled kicking a wall down before shooting down several Nazis who never even stood a chance.
Both Rogers and Logan rushed to the prisoners before kicking down the door.
One young teenager approached them before Cap picked him up and told the others to follow.
As they rushed off to the gates a small number of Nazis tried to rush them only to get shot by Marcus who rushed to them.
"Nice work lets go!" Marcus yelled as they rushed to the gate.
However a small number of Nazis threw grenades at them.
Just as they were about to land the boy Cap had held his hand out and they flew back which Logan and Marcus noticed.
Soon the allied forces arrived before rushing into the camp to deal with who remained as they loaded up the prisoners before Marcus looked at the boy.
"Don't know how you did that son but clearly you got a gift. Whats your name?" Marcus asked.
"Erik Lensherr. Thank you for saving us." Erik said.
End Flashback
"So why do you think Erik wants this damn thing?" Sean asked.
"Hmm? My best guess is he's probably hoping to enhance some of his people like Sabertooth." Logan said.
"That makes sense. Maybe his enhancements from those crystals have worn off and he needs a new method for it." Sean said.
"Maybe." Logan said before they landed.
Sean and Logan got on XTV's.
"Ok let's get this over with." Sean said as they drove off before they saw the metal dome.
"Wonder how long till we get spotted?" Sean asked before rockets came down.
"That answer your question?" Logan asked as they evaded them.
"Screw this!" Sean yelled using Magneto's power to force them all back before grabbing Logan and teleported them inside.
"Nice." Logan said before they saw the Rebirth machine.
And someone was already inside it.
"Grr. Someone is already inside the damn thing." Logan said.
"Why am I not surprised. Lets get him out of there and blow it up." Sean said before Sabertooth attacked Logan.
"I'll hold him off! Get to the machine!" Logan yelled as Sean rushed to the machine before metal started attacking him.
"I don't know what game you're playing Erik but this is over the fucking line!" Sean yelled pushing it all back before jumping to the machine. "Whatever Erik is promising you pal you don't know what you're getting yourself into." Sean said setting the explosive.
"On the contrary old friend."
Sean widened his eyes before looking inside seeing Erik in the machine.
"Erik?" Sean asked before seeing him looking so old compared to last time.
"This chamber is going to save my life." Magneto said.
"What the hell happened to you?" Sean asked.
"I'm old, Sean. That much would be clear. My genetic enhancements have kept me alive until now, but this rebirthing chamber is my last hope for survival." Magneto said.
"Are you out of your mind! You know what this thing did to Rogers in the 40's. It's not safe." Sean said.
"Only to humans. To us, it grants long life. By destroying those controls, you take away my only chance. Do you think your grandfather would do this?" Magneto said making him frown.
"What are you waiting for kid! Pull the pin!" Logan yelled.
Sean sighed as he took the explosive off.
"You better not make me regret this." Sean said as the machine activated before Magneto started to regenerate looking younger again.
Thats when Logan threw Creed into a generator shocking him.
"Time to bail!" Logan yelled cutting Erik out of there before setting the bomb as they ran off before it blew.
Erik got back up and widened his eyes seeing the machine was destroyed.
"WOLVERINE!" Magneto yelled enraged.
"Enough! Whats done is done. And I spared your life." Sean said making him frown before sighing.
"Yes...Thats true." Magneto said before opening an exit for them. "There was a small boy in Poland who owes the grandson of his rescuer that much." Magneto said making him smirk.
Soon the two headed back to the Jet.
"What made you stop from pulling the pin?" Logan asked.
"Ah. Erik is a the pain in the ass...But he's still a family friend regardless." Sean said.
"If you say so." Logan said.
"So back to the school...Or make a little visit?" Sean asked.
"I think that one is clear." Logan said.
Later
Logan and Sean stood in front of a frozen stasis chamber that held none other than Captain America himself.
"It's been a long time, Cap, But I'm still fighting the good fight. Today we had a victory...For you. You gotta know we'll find that cure." Logan said.
"It's time you two." Fury said making them walk out.
"Hey Nick. I was thinking. We got two good healers back at the school who can heal almost anything. You think maybe they might be able to fix him up?" Sean asked making him look at Cap's chamber.
"Maybe. I'll have to evaluate their skills." Nick said before the two left. "And remember." Nick tried to say.
"Yeah, yeah. We were never here." Sean said as the two left.
Later
Sean sighed as he held both Rogue and Jean in bed in the nude.
"I didn't know your grandfather knew the famous Captain America." Rogue said.
"It's old family history. My grandfather, Logan and Cap destroyed the original Rebirth machine to make sure no one went through the same thing ever again. Of course they were found out but they let the matter go since they knew why they did what they did. When the war was finally over my grandfather retired and later met my grandmother and had my Dad who followed in his footsteps and then he later met my mother and had me." Sean said.
"Well...I know he'd be proud of you." Jean said kissing him making him smile as sleep claimed them both.
Authors Note: Sorry for the long ass wait but my focus has been elsewhere. Anyway this was part of a massive update to introduce my new Legend of Korra story the Avatar's Guardian which is a legendary Godzilla crossover so go read that after this and you'll enjoy it.
