Meghan stood outside the cemetery she wasn't allowed to enter. She could look through the gate and see the headstone she wanted to visit.
Neal Caffrey.
She remained on the sidewalk, watching the bald man who had just finished visiting said grave. The man made his way out of the gate, clearly not expecting to see Meghan.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I know, Mozz. To be honest, I didn't expect to see you either... How was Spain? I'll bet you enjoyed the wine lists."
"I did. Your brother has always been a good host."
"Speaking of brothers, the other one did something..."
"And what might that be?"
"Let's talk about that at a different cemetery. One that isn't being watched by the other suits and Marshal's."
The two stepped away from the gate. Mozzie opened the door to his cab for Meghan as if she were a passenger and he was just being polite. He drove her to a cemetery that was closer to Brooklyn.
Meghan stepped out of the cab, followed by Mozzie. He grabbed her elbow to stop her from going in right away. He looked around seeming to think something was off.
"I think were safe here, Mo—"
"We're being watched."
"Unless it's Harvey's investigator, I think we're okay, Mozz. Jessica already knows. She used me against Dad to get her merger with Edward Darby's firm in London."
"Who told her?"
"You really had to ask?"
"Only if there was going to be a surprising answer like one of you."
"Hold that thought," she said as she unfolded a piece of paper. "It's to Harvey and Donna. Tells them everything except what got us into the program. Just says that Neal's dad did something and here we are. He didn't go into a lot of detail."
"And he's not supposed to. Who else did he tell?"
"Remember Rachel?"
Mozzie was actually happy about this. He didn't have to hear Mike's complaints about not being able to tell Rachel anything and how it was preventing him from having a real relationship.
They walked between the different headstones. The feeling of being watched never left Mozzie.
"Are you doing the Birthday Tradition, today?"
"I was planning to but based on the way your acting, I guess I'm not."
"You can still do it, but let's make the headstone choices appear random. Then we can watch from the tree line"
It was a woman who was following them.
Vanessa, Meghan thought. Guess Harvey doesn't really trust me either.
She had been researching the old case of Neal's back at the office. It had to have been one of his first cons because the work was messy. It was a team effort and one of the guys clearly had a different agenda from the rest of the team.
"What did you get yourself into, Danny?" she asked herself. A thought occurred, and then she left the laptop open as she went to the file room. It wasn't a wise move, but Mike had looked at the case the night before and decided to help her after all.
Ava Hessington was guilty of bribery. There was no doubt about that with video evidence that was handed to Harvey by his former mentor.
Harvey had every intention of winning the case, but the stakes had changed. He no longer wanted to leave the Firm. He had found a way to get his name on the wall and he was going to use it. All he needed was Darby's backing.
"Holy shit,' Donna said, surprised that something of this magnitude was going on without her knowledge.
"Was that a good holy shit or a bad holy shit?" Harvey asked from behind her.
"Harvey, you just told me that you're planning a coup. Give me a second to figure that out."
"Not a coup. It's a move. And when you're done with your lecture—"
"No. No lecture. I just have one question... Do I get my own office? Harvey, if you want to be managing partner and Darby agreed to back you, then I'll follow you to the ends of the earth. But before we start, I want to make sure you're ready to do this to Jessica."
"I am."
"Then let's go beat the shit out of Cameron Dennis. I'll go get Meghan," she said just before Mike came in to try again. He does not give up, does he? she thought.
"I know you don't want to see me".
"And yet—" Harvey replied, turning away from Mike.
"I just wanted to let you know that I got a copy of the letter that Jessica blackmailed me with, and I made it clear to her that I would take it to the D.A. if she ever threatened me, even if that means I lose someone very important in the process, so what I did will never happen again."
"Never should have happened in the first place. Close the door on your way out. Donna and I have work to do."
It was harsh but deserved as far as Harvey and Donna were concerned. Donna left to find Meghan who was usually in the library on her laptop. When she got there to find the teen, she found the laptop, but the person closing the lid and placing it under their arm was not the one she expected to see.
Why is Mike taking Meghan's laptop out of the library? Why is he taking it, period?
Because Meghan wasn't in the library, Donna went to find her somewhere else, mostly to bring her to Harvey's office, but also to tell her Mike had her laptop for some reason.
She did find the teen in the file room, opening a box for an old case. It had to have been older than Meghan, if not as old.
"Meghan, Harvey needs to see you."
"I'll be right there. Just need to put this case back." Meghan hadn't even looked through it yet, but she knew better than to make Harvey wait.
Donna helped her raise the box over her head.
"Get moving before he comes looking for you himself."
"Just out of idle curiosity... Why is Harvey taking me under his wing?"
Once the file box was back in place, Donna and Meghan left the file room and headed to Harvey's office.
"Like this, or at all?"
"Both."
"Well, to answer the first part, he believes that while Mike may have taught you well, he didn't show you how to be loyal which is what Harvey values most. As for the second part... you'd have to ask him."
"What if I knew something about Mike that proved his loyalty and that telling you what that something was would be betraying his loyalty on my part."
Donna stopped and turned on a dime. "Don't try and defend him, Meghan."
"I'm not." She put her hand in one of her pockets and removed a folded piece of paper. Then she held it out for Donna to take possession. "He was going to leave this in Harvey's office a few days ago." Donna started unfolding the paper. "I didn't want him to do anything with it until he handed Jessica his letter of resignation which didn't happen... tell Harvey, or don't tell Harvey. Either way, prison wasn't what motivated Mike's actions."
Donna's eyes scanned the paper as Meghan walked away. Her head popped up from the letter. The teen's puzzle was filling in.
Even if that means I lose someone very important in the process, she recalled Mike saying moments earlier. Who was this kid that she somehow held the answer to every question Donna had? Wait! Witness Protection? Brother? Sister? Mike isn't an only child?! As she came close to the end of the letter, it hit her. If Meghan is Mike's sister, and Mike goes to prison, she'll have no one. Is it possible we were wrong about him?
Meghan arrived in Harvey's office. He had his back to the door. The file he wanted her to read was on the coffee table. She plopped down on the sofa, then reached for the file.
"What took you so long?"
"I was looking at the cold case you gave me yesterday. Donna found me just before I actually got to look at anything."
"And is someone helping you?"
"My brother is. He knows this case better than I do because he grew up with one of the guys. Why do you ask?"
"Just making sure you're not involving Mike... You keep referring to this brother of yours like he works here," Harvey noted. "What's his name? I'd like to meet him."
"Why do you want to know his name? From what I've heard and seen, you're not the type to care about meeting people unless they're clients and you don't even like meeting them."
She had him there. Something else only a handful of people could do. Meghan continued to read the file, feeling Harvey's eyes lingering on her as if he was looking for features he might recognize from someone else.
Mike and Rachel met in the bullpen after Louis' farewell speech since he couldn't be in charge of the associates and hold the position of quartermaster at the same time... something he had forgotten during his battle of wits with Nigel from the London office.
Both were hoping for positive results with Harvey. Rachel was waiting to hear how it went.
"It didn't go well," Mike said.
"Did you tell him about Jessica?"
"Yeah. He didn't care."
"What about Meghan?"
"She doesn't deserve hatred by association," he looked up from the box he was unpacking when he heard Rachel sigh. "What?"
"I just wish I could give you a hug right now, but I can't because we still want to keep us quiet."
"Well, come on. You can give me a hug. Something could've happened. Something bad, like a... My dog could've died."
His bad mood was quickly brightening, turning a bad situation into something of a joke just to get Rachel's arms around him.
"Oh, you have a dog now?"
"I was really close to this dog."
"Well, the best way to get over the death of a dog is to get a new one."
"No." He even pretended to cry. "I'm just-I'm just too upset. I'm-I don't know if I'm ready for a new fake dog right now."
Meghan came up to his desk, rolling her eyes at the scene. It was a good thing he didn't try getting a job as an actor. But then again, being his sister and living under the same roof for a large portion of her life, she had no problem seeing through the act.
"Are you talking about the dog we created when I was seven?" she whispered.
"How did you... You just walked in. How did you know?" Rachel asked.
"Well, he did raise me... Did you get a chance to read Neal's case file?"
"I did," Mike replied. "It's Neal all right. Unless recent evidence surfaces, you can say the case is closed. With statute of limitations law, Harvey can't go after him, plus everyone thinks he's dead."
"Thanks. Mike... even if Harvey doesn't forgive you, would you forgive me?"
"What did you do?"
"I think the three of us should go to another room," Rachel suggested. "Meghan, go to Conference Room C. I'm going to get some coffee, then Mike will join us after I give him the signal."
Her plan was perfect. Harvey would think nothing of Meghan finding a spot away from everyone while she did her work.
The teen nodded before turning in the direction of Conference Room C. Rachel headed for the breakroom, and Mike went to the bathroom.
Meghan waited for what felt like an eternity until Rachel walked through the door, soon to be followed by her brother.
"Alright, we're alone. What happened?" Mike asked, crossing his arms.
"I told Donna."
"You did what?"
"Well... you actually told Donna. I gave her the letter I stole from your old office."
"What did she have to say about it?" Rachel inquired.
"She hasn't said anything, yet. I think she's still processing. Otherwise, Harvey would have called me in to talk about it, and he wouldn't have been vague like he was this morning before I gave the letter to Donna."
"What were you thinking?" Rachel asked.
"She thought I was defending Dad. But I let her fill in the blanks herself. All I said was that prison wasn't the driving force behind this decision."
"We'll talk about this some more later. I have to meet a client with Louis... Keep me updated on anything Ross related... If this goes downhill..."
"I'll ground myself until the two of you get married,"
"Try longer... There's a reason I didn't want people to know."
Mike left. He didn't have time, even if Louis would understand now that that particular senior partner knew he had a sister.
