I surveyed the bright colorful walls of the Wadsworth Atheneum. What a school field trip, I thought, as me and my best friend Aster walked from portrait to Portrait examining each and every detail. She tucked her light brown hair behind her ear and surveyed the room. Her brown eyes rested on a new portrait and she picked up her lavender colored clipboard, and rushed over to read about it. The high ceilings, the skylights and everything in between. It took so much of my energy to take it all in that I failed to notice a gleaming silver light in the corner of my eyes. I noticed that the light made a shape of a feathery Winged Bird perched high on top of Olive branch. I recognize this from my many many studies of Greek mythology ( kind of… Not really. ) This was The Mark of Athena. Not the book, but the sign that the gods would use to claim their demigods. Anyway I saw this sign on top of my best friend's head just floating up there, enjoying the view. "Hey Aster," I said, surprised that she hasn't noticed that there is a glowing light engulfing her entire figure,
"Huh?" she replied while totally focusing on the description of a painting we were passing. "Did you know that this painting was made in 1911?" she then said still completely oblivious to the now fading gray light,
"So who made you half blind?" I asked sarcastically.
"What are you talking about?" Aster responded. The glow was now fading faster.
"Congratulations you officially learned the award for the most idiotic person alive. You my friend might want to tilt your chin upwards 90" I retorted
She slowly looked up just in time to see the faded outline of an owl.
"Welp," I said because she was still utterly speechless, " You my friend, have 1. been claimed by the goddess Athena, and 2. just broadcast yourself to any, and every monster in this state! It is a true shame that Copper won't be here to witness this."
She slowly rotated her body to face me, " What. Are you. talking about?"
"Heh, Heh. Funny story, so you know how demigod children are supposed to get claimed by their 13th birthday?"
Aster gave me a funny look.
"So.. um it is the week before your 13th birthday, and mine has already passed."
Aster started gripping her pencil as though it was a dagger.
"Wow, I didn't expect you to be this susceptible to the mist, any way Copper is a satyr, our guardian supposedly, and I was already claimed back on my birthday-"
"And you DIDN'T TELL ME?" Aster tried to whisper while clenching her teeth, while yelling, It took all of the power in me not to laugh my guts out, turn into a puddle of mush, get Prometheus to reform me, then do it all over again.
"Ok, Copper told me not to tell you, and I am genuinely surprised that I listened, but the important part is-"
"YOU ARE IGNORING THE OBVIOUS!"
"Ya, ok but I am busy trying to explain something to you, my mother is Demeiter. You know, my birthday is the first day of spring, her daughter's persephone? "
Aster continued to stare at me like a bean sprout had grown out of my ear. Apparently I was spot on.
" You have a bean in your ear!"
"And?" I remarked as I reached up to my ear and pulled out the bean sprout. "It's not the end of the world, just the end of our lives."
"WHAT?!" Aster responded, this time, a little too loud. Everybody slowly turned their heads towards where we were.
"Welp. We're screwed."
"Thanks for that," Aster bent down to tie her shoe. "Ok, let's think about this logically. We first have to find a way out of here safely and not suspiciously? Then we have to make it to my house. There I can get my bow and-"
"Why don't we go to that art exhibit over there, rip off the forks and spoons on that sculpture, and stab some people?" As you can see, I clearly was the best at battle strategy.
"Sammy, maybe we should stab the monsters instead of people, ya know?"
I got up from the bench I was sitting on and walked towards the exit.
"If anyone wants to stop us from leaving, better do it now!" I yelled.
"Now who has the idiot award?" Aster retorted.
I ignored her and continued on my way to the exit. All of the sudden vines sprouted through the glass roof, and grabbed both me, and Aster.
What happens next? Let me know if I should write another chapter!
