Chapter 28
Tony awoke from a dreamless sleep. The sun was shining directly in his face with the warm rays of a summer morning. Groaning, Tony sat up and ran a hand through his hair. He was feeling much better. The vomiting had stopped, so he was finally able to keep all the fluids down and didn't feel so weak anymore. Tony's hands still shook a little as he reached for a water bottle by his bed, but it was nothing compared to the last few days.
It had been seven days since he'd had his last drop of alcohol. He couldn't say it was easy, but he also couldn't say he felt a great need to drink right now. It was mostly relief that the terrible symptoms were diminishing. And it felt strange to be sober and clearheaded after such a long time of being drunk all the time.
Tony got up and went to the bathroom. After a quick shower, he changed into a light blue shirt and black pants. It felt good to be dressed decently again. Some normalcy. Tony trimmed his beard and gelled his hair, then went downstairs to the kitchen. The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafted towards him as he entered the room. Pepper and Rhodey were eating breakfast together. Coulson had already left yesterday and Tony felt a great deal of gratitude for him.
"Morning," Tony mumbled, still a little sleepy, and sat down with the two of them smiling softly at him. Immediately, he began to feel safe and comfortable again.
"Coffee?" Rhodey asked politely.
"Yes. Thank you."
Rhodey got up and poured Tony a cup of black coffee. Then he placed the steaming drink in front of Tony and returned to his toast. Tony looked down at the dark brown liquid and tried not to think about the fact that just a few days ago he had drunk his coffee only with a generous shot of hard liquor. Did he even know what pure coffee tasted like?
"Tony? Are you okay?" Pepper, who had obviously been watching him, asked.
"I think so," Tony replied uncertainly.
"How are you feeling?"
"Much better. My hands still shake a little and I feel weak. But I can walk again without puffing like a grampus."
"Sounds like a big improvement. Did you take another Valium?"
"No."
He actually found it pretty easy to get off the benzos. He didn't like the feeling for some reason. It made him tired all the time, slow, and he felt like his short-term memory wasn't working very well. He liked being drunk much better.
"Good. That's really good," Pepper said. "I'm very relieved to see you feeling better."
Tony looked at her somehow worried and happy expression and hesitated. He could have come up with a thousand reasons why nothing was good. But the withdrawal was almost over and maybe it would only take a few more days to feel like a human being again.
"You're right, it's... good."
Pepper gave him an encouraging smile. Tony dropped his eyes back to his coffee.
"You want something to eat?" Rhodey asked. "There's scrambled eggs, toast and ham."
"Later."
Tony drank his coffee in silence as he listened to Pepper and Rhodey's conversation. He didn't have the energy to join in. But he liked just sitting with them. To be with them.
"Well... vacation's over for me. I have to go back to work today," Rhodey said and put his plate in the dishwasher. "I'd go to my place tonight then... If that's okay with you, Tony?"
"Oh," Tony said, surprised at how much he had gotten used to Rhodey's company. "Yeah, of course."
"Will you see me out?"
Tony nodded and followed Rhodey to his car.
"Is it really okay?" Rhodey asked quietly. "I can come back after work. It's no problem. I could stay longer."
"You don't have to, I'm fine. I need to learn how to deal with all this on my own."
"No, you don't," Rhodey sighed. "On the contrary - you need to learn how to ask for help and support. You can't do this on your own."
"Yes. Right. Sorry. I'm still... figuring things out."
"Totally understandable," Rhodey said, still very quietly. "Tony... I want to say this quickly before I leave, even though I'm sure you already know. You made it through this withdrawal. But now comes the next hard part. Staying sober. That will be very hard. You have to take care of yourself, observe yourself, think of yourself. The temptation to drink again will come. Not just once. You have to find a way to deal with it. Eat well as soon as you can, exercise, keep busy, try to sleep more, talk to Pepper or me about how you feel. If you feel like you're losing control, ask one of us to take control.
Tony realized that he hadn't thought about what would happen next. He also realized how surprised he was that everyone was leaving. He had known that Coulson would leave sooner or later, which was perfectly fine. But he hadn't thought about Rhodey and Pepper until now.
"Tony, alcohol cravings are going to be a thing. Keep that in mind," Rhodey said, putting a hand on Tony's shoulder. "That said - I'm proud you made it through this, and I'm very happy for you. And for me - I thought I'd lost you."
Tony wrinkled his nose slightly, mumbled something like 'yeah, well' and tried to put on a cool face. Now that he wasn't drunk anymore, there were so many emotions - everywhere and all the time. It was as if his nerve endings were exposed.
"If anything comes up, just let me know. I mean it. Call me anytime."
"Will do."
Rhodey gave Tony a quick hug, then got into the car. With a final wave, he turned the car around and drove away. Tony stood outside in the sun for a moment, trying to make sense of what lay ahead. Then he went back inside and sat down with Pepper, who had started to read the newspaper.
"Would you like something to eat now?" she asked without looking up, and it was clear that she was trying to be casual.
Tony hesitated. He didn't really want to eat, but he knew he should. So he said yes and took some of the scrambled eggs. At first it was impossible to tell what he was feeling. But then he understood that he was also afraid of Pepper leaving. He didn't feel ready to be alone again. He didn't feel ready for anything. What was going to happen now? What should he do next? He kept looking nervously at Pepper, who was sitting so calmly in front of her newspaper, drinking another cup of coffee. Pepper turned the page and then, still casually and without looking at him, poured him another cup of coffee. Tony sat back and tried to let go of the tension inside him. But it was impossible and he shifted restlessly in his seat.
"You want to take a walk?" Pepper asked, putting down the newspaper and looking at him.
"Why not," Tony replied, because he couldn't think of anything else to do.
They walked out into the garden, the air warm and fragrant with the scent of summer flowers. As they walked along the garden path, Tony felt that he could let go of some of the tension inside him. The silence between them was somehow comfortable, filled with unspoken understanding. Pepper had helped him so much, she hadn't given up on him. And she was still here with him, sensing that he still needed her.
The sun rose higher and higher as they walked slowly across the grass. Tony gave Pepper a quick glance and hesitated before his fingers brushed against Pepper's hand. She looked at him in surprise, her eyes soft and bright, and intertwined her fingers with his. The touch was tentative, but it felt natural, like a silent confirmation of something they'd both felt for a long time, but hadn't been able to put into words.
They walked hand in hand, the simple contact providing comfort and connection. Tony squeezed her hand lightly, a silent thank you for her unwavering support. Pepper responded with a gentle squeeze of her own, her smile warm and affectionate. Tony felt himself relax, as if everything would be all right.
When they reached the sun loungers on Tony's back porch, they sat down on one together, still holding hands. Tony looked at Pepper.
"I don't know what I would have done without you," he said, and he felt that it wasn't difficult to admit that to her.
Pepper's smile widened.
"You'd really have to learn your Social Security number," she replied, chuckling.
"That would be my least problem," Tony smiled back.
They sat there, side by side, their hands still clasped together, enjoying the serenity of the garden and the quiet strength of each other's presence.
The garden was alive with the soft rustling of leaves and the distant murmur of the sea. Tony leaned back, feeling the comfort of Pepper's presence beside him. He was aware of the subtle sounds around him: the gentle breeze, the chirping of crickets, and the soft rustling as Pepper smoothed her skirt. The rhythm of the day, combined with his own lingering fatigue from the past few days, lulled him into a peaceful sleep.
When Tony stirred awake, the first thing he noticed was the vibrant display of colors in the sky. The sun was setting, casting a warm red glow over everything. Pepper wasn't beside him anymore, he noticed with some discomfort, but he felt a little more rested and completely clear-headed. He had his eyes on the horizon for a while when he heard a noise.
Tony sat up and looked behind him and there was Pepper standing in the patio door.
"Well, sleepyhead?" she said with a smile.
"You're still here," Tony noted with relief as he slowly stood up.
"Of course."
Tony looked at Pepper. He looked into her beautiful eyes, at the cute freckles on her face. Her hair was pulled back in a less tight braid today. She looked perfect - and smiled at him with such sincerity that it warmed his heart. Pepper was the only woman who could keep up with him, who could follow his fast pace, who could argue with him without being outdone, who could give him her opinion openly and honestly without being awestruck like most people. She had always been able to do that, from the beginning. She had put up with him for years, organized his life, outlived woman after woman in his chaotic love life without ever commenting on it. And now she had seen him at his lowest point. She had taken care of him, organized help, endured his catastrophic condition. As she had always done, in other, perhaps less stressful ways, for so many years. And she had stayed. Until today.
"What?" Pepper asked, suddenly a little worried by his expression.
"You're still here," Tony repeated, "why?"
"You're not seriously asking why I don't leave you alone right now? Don't be ridiculous."
"I am asking."
"Because the physical withdrawal is only the beginning. You can't stay alone now."
"But why are you doing this?"
"I don't understand what you mean."
"Why you, Pepper?" Tony asked gently. "I pushed you away, I hurt you, I made you cry, I abandoned you. Why did you come back when you had already turned your back on me? Why did you go through all that shit with me? Why do you stay with me?"
Pepper stared at him with her mouth agape. Her eyes got a little watery and she blinked a few times.
"Can't you guess?" she whispered.
Tony's heart began to beat faster. He slowly walked towards Pepper and then hesitantly stopped in front of her. The red of the sunset reflected in her eyes, making her cheeks look a little flushed. As if she had a slight sunburn.
"Pepper," he said softly, feeling the charged atmosphere between them not for the first time. He lowered his eyes to the ground as he felt his heart beat even faster. "Pepper, I... uh..."
"Tony?" Pepper put her hand under his chin, gently forcing him to lift his head and look at her again.
"Huh?"
"I know," she said then.
And with that, Pepper leaned forward and closed her eyes. Moments later, he felt her lips on his. At that moment, Tony wondered why he ever needed alcohol when this was so much better. The high that came from the moment Pepper kissed him was so much better and more intense than any alcohol high. Tony opened his eyes to see Pepper laugh briefly and then bite her lips mischievously as two tears left her eyes. Tony didn't know if they were tears of joy or tears of overwhelm. But he suddenly knew so clearly how he felt about this wonderful woman.
"Is this… okay?" Tony asked, somehow stunned.
"It's totally okay," Pepper replied.
"But it's kind of weird too, right?"
"Absolutely not weird."
"You sure? Because it feels -"
"Oh, shut up, already," Pepper laughed and wrapped her arms around him.
The world seemed to fade away, leaving only the soft rustle of the leaves and the steady beating of their hearts. Tony hesitated, then placed a tender kiss on the top of her head, feeling Pepper relax against him. The moment felt timeless, as if the world had stopped for them alone.
Then Tony cupped Pepper's cheeks and made her look at him. He grinned at her and kissed her again. Softly, tenderly. This kiss was so much more than a kiss between two people who liked each other. It was an admission that they both wanted the same thing. It was the final surrender of restraint, despite years of attraction. A release of the tension between them that they had built up over so many years without ever really acting on it. This kiss was more than either of them had ever hoped for. And it was perfect.
As the last light of day dipped below the horizon, he knew that with Pepper by his side, he could face whatever came next.
As night fell, the stars began to peek through the twilight sky. Tony and Pepper remained on the sun lounger, savoring the quiet intimacy of the moment. The moon cast a subtle glow over the garden, illuminating their surroundings with a soft, silvery light. Tony felt a deep sense of peace, a rare feeling in his chaotic life. He looked at Pepper and for a moment the world felt perfect.
"I didn't know this would be a thing," Tony said quietly. "I didn't know it could be a thing."
"Neither did I," Pepper replied. "I mean, I always felt... something. But... you were you."
Tony leaned back, grinning as he teased Pepper. "Oh, you were you? What does that even mean?" He chuckled, a playful twinkle in his eyes. "Like, I was the genius billionaire playboy, brilliant of course but with clear trust issues, and you were... what, the genius billionaire's incredible sidekick who endured all his bullshit and cleaned up the mess behind him?"
Pepper laughed quietly and shook her head. "Something like that. You had one affair after another, everyone knew that, but you never let anyone get close to you - a mysterious entity. Oh, come on, you know what I mean. You were always larger than life, and I was just... there, trying to keep up."
Tony raised an eyebrow, still smiling. "Just there? Pep, you were always so much more than that." He leaned in closer, his voice softening. "You were my anchor, my voice of reason. You kept me grounded."
"Well, not that grounded," Pepper laughed, then became serious again. "You, Tony... you made my life exciting. Unpredictable. Sometimes infuriating, but never boring."
Tony chuckled again, more warmly this time. "Well, I aim to please." He reached out and gently took her hand in his. "I think... maybe this thing, whatever it is, has been coming for a long time. We just never realized it."
Pepper nodded, feeling the truth in his words. "Yeah. Maybe we were just waiting for the right time."
Tony looked at her, the playful banter giving way to a more serious, affectionate expression. "And maybe... that moment is now."
Slowly, almost hesitantly, Tony leaned closer. Pepper met him halfway, their lips brushing in a deep, lingering kiss. It was a promise, a shared understanding that they would face the future together, no matter what it held.
As they pulled away, they both smiled, a new warmth settling between them. The night wrapped around them, a comforting embrace as they sat together under the stars. Then, on an impulse, Tony stood up and looked at Pepper with such intensity that he saw her blush. Carefully, he took her hand, helped her up and led her inside. When Tony saw Pepper realize where he was taking her, she almost seemed to trip over her own breath. Tony tried to stifle a grin and gently pulled her into the bedroom.
Pepper seemed to have only a few seconds of uncertainty before she simply followed her instincts and unbuttoned his shirt. She took a moment to gently caress the skin around the glowing reactor and Tony closed his eyes, feeling how lovingly she was treating him. Then she pulled his shirt all the way down and tossed it to the floor. Tony didn't have to be asked twice. He reached around Pepper to her back and pulled down the zipper of her dress, which immediately slid down her body to the floor. He wanted Pepper. He wanted all of Pepper.
Tony had never experienced anything like this. He had slept with so many women in so many different ways. But never like this. Never with someone that he... loved. And that was what made it so special. That was what made it so different. Right now they were one. It was a strong feeling of togetherness, so much more than sex. Tony could not find the words to describe this unique feeling. He let himself go completely. And she let herself go completely.
Finally, he was connected to someone. The loose ends of their bond had come together. And it wasn't weird, it wasn't awkward, it was exactly as it should be. Intimate. For the first time in his life, he was sure he could love - and be loved.
When they were done, they rolled onto their sides and smiled at each other. Both stunned by the intensity. Tony held Pepper in his arms for a long time until they both fell into the deepest and most peaceful sleep they had had in a long time.
So, there is finally some happiness. Thanks to those who have persevered, haha.
But this is not meant to be a happy ending, which would be very unrealistic. It's not an ending at all. Tony will still have to deal with some problems and there will be some action in later chapters.
As always, I hope you enjoy!
