Anyway. Welcome to the new readers. Also, I'm so excited we made it over 300 followers. That's amazing. You guys are awesome. Hope you enjoy the new chapter. Leave me a review and let me know what you think.
Chapter 67
Goodbye Cokeworth
Harry hesitated in the hall outside the kitchen. He knew Snape was in there and he wasn't sure he was ready to face the man.
George had just floo'd back to his flat. Harry had been thankful that he'd stayed. He had tried to apologize for yesterday, but George had just shut him down, insisting that he would always be here for Harry.
They hadn't talked much. Harry had kept his occlumency shields up. He wanted to put it all behind him. Yesterday was a mess. His grades, the new lordships, going through the vault…
Harry closed his eyes and tried to push away the thoughts of what had happened on Diagon. He was sure Snape was upset with him for having run off like that. He couldn't believe how stupid he'd been. Then he'd apparated them back here. As distressed as he'd been, he was lucky he hadn't splinched any of them.
Harry sighed as he considered just going back up to his room and hiding. He knew they would have to talk today. There wasn't any getting around it. Harry wrapped his arms around his stomach. He hadn't eaten anything yesterday and his stomach hurt. He knew he should eat something, but the thought of food was awful.
Harry lowered his head and trudged into the kitchen. He'd already showered and dressed for the day. He'd even felt calm enough to switch back to base form. Though he was now second guessing that decision. It had felt comfortable to do that when George was here. Now though, he was feeling self-conscious.
He glanced up through his hair and saw that Snape was reading the paper and sipping his coffee. Harry appreciated that he wasn't staring. He hoped they could get the conversation out of the way and move on with the day. He wanted to enjoy his last day here. Focusing on all the upsetting things from yesterday would ruin that.
He was more hesitant now then he had been to go to the Burrow. He wasn't doing well and didn't know how well he'd be able to put on the mask they all knew.
Harry poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down at the table. He stared into his cup for a long time. Working to lower his wall, as he did not want to strain his mind again. Having his wall available when he needed it was important, and he'd learned overusing it could cost him when it mattered.
The rush of emotions wasn't as overwhelming as he'd expected. He took a deep breath in relief. Perhaps he could get through this conversation with Snape without breaking down. He doubted it. However, Snape had strangely become one of the people in his life that he felt safe to have a breakdown in front of. He always remained calm and comforting.
Harry looked up and found Snapes eyes on him.
Severus watched as Harry made his way into the kitchen and settled at the table with coffee. He tried to keep his eyes on his paper. He'd heard the floo flare and assumed George had left. Harry looked pale and upset, and Severus wondered if he should tell Albus he wouldn't be able to go with him tomorrow.
Harry finally looked up and Severus folded his paper and set it down. He wanted to give Harry his undivided attention.
"I'm sorry for yesterday." Harry whispered softly.
Severus sighed and folded his hands in front of him.
"I wish you wouldn't have taken off, but I'm not upset with you. I'm sorry yesterday was so difficult." Severus responded.
Harry nodded.
"Do we need to talk?" Harry asked.
Severus could see the dread in his face. They needed to address a few things though.
"Yes, we do. We'll keep it short though." Severus said.
Harry's shoulder slumped and he nodded.
Severus considered Harry for a moment before he spoke.
"I spoke with Sirius and Remus last night." Severus said.
Severus didn't fully understand the heartbroken look that came over Harry's face. Surely after what had happened, he must have known he would talk to them.
Harry's face dropped into his hands.
"What did you tell them?" Harry whispered.
"I told them what happened. They are understandably upset." Severus answered softly.
Harry looked up at him and Severus could see resignation on his face.
"Did you tell them who?" Harry all but whispered.
Severus shook his head and watched relief come over Harry's face.
"Can you tell me why you don't want them to know?" Severus asked in concern.
Harry bit his lip and played with his cup of coffee for a moment.
With a sigh he began to speak.
"I didn't remember that I knew his name. Not until a few weeks ago." Harry said softly.
Severus nodded. Harry had told him this part yesterday.
"When I remembered…Sirius and Remus were here. They kept trying to ask me questions. I was upset but…I was also afraid to tell them." Harry said, biting his lip.
Severus felt confused.
"Why? I know it's hard for you to talk about, but why were you afraid to tell them?" Severus asked.
Harry's shoulders slumped.
"Because I realized they knew him. After that memory came back, I remembered his name coming up when we were all at Grimmauld last summer. I… I couldn't tell them…or anyone. I didn't want them to think I was lying." Harry said quietly.
Severus nodded. He supposed that made sense. The boy's only real experience with telling about his abuse had been met with being labeled a liar and more abuse.
"Merrick Fletcher is Mundungus's cousin. Most of the Order knows him." Severus explained.
Harry looked even more upset by that statement.
"I…I didn't know." Harry whispered.
Severus sighed. He didn't want Harry to get the wrong impression from his statement. With that he decided to gamble on telling Harry something he hadn't planned to.
"May I tell you something?" Severus asked cautiously.
Harry looked at him hesitantly before nodding.
"When we first did your diagnostic, I was appalled at the level of cruelty that you had faced. I was angry at your aunt and uncle for how they had treated you. I was angry at Albus for taking you there. I was angry with myself and the other adults in your life for not having seen how much you were suffering." Severus started.
Harry bit his lip and looked down. Severus could see the look of shame in the boy's eyes. He wished he could take that away. Wished there was a simple fix for that undeserved blame, abused children put on themselves. He knew that there wasn't though. Time and a lot of emotional work was the only thing that ever helped lessen it.
"It's my fault. Dumbledore told me that he would have taken me away. If I'd just told it wouldn't have happened. I trapped myself there. It's my fault." Harry whispered quietly.
Severus' jaw clenched. He didn't know what Albus had specifically said to Harry, but putting the responsibility of his abuse on him was unconscionable.
"It's not your fault Harry. You tried to tell. You just weren't heard and that's not your fault." Severus said earnestly.
Harry shrugged and wiped a single tear off of his face.
Severus sighed.
"When I saw the signs that you'd been sexually abused, I initially chalked it up to being more abuse from your relatives. I'm sorry I didn't initially believe you when you told me it wasn't your uncle." Severus admitted.
Harry just shrugged again. The dejected look on his face though told him that Harry did feel hurt by not being believed.
"I worried that some of the abuse had come from someone in the wizarding world. The gap between your first and third year made me suspect it might have been someone else. I'll admit that for a while I suspected everyone. I didn't want to do what Albus had done and hand you back to an abuser." Severus said.
Harry's brows furrowed but he seemed to be listening.
"In many cases of child abuse, especially ones of this nature, the abuser is close to the child." Severus said.
Harry blushed and looked anywhere but Severus.
He knew Harry was uncomfortable with the conversation. However, he was thankful Harry was listening.
"It's not uncommon for them to gain your trust. I worried that given when the abuse appeared to have started that it might have been Sirius or Remus. That you might have initially trusted them and then had that trust betrayed." Severus said.
Harry gave Severus a bewildered look, but there was anger in his eyes. Severus held up his hand to keep Harry from speaking for a moment.
"I know that's not the case. I suspected the twins as well. Especially after…well, there was a rather heated fight at the school when you were in the hospital, between George and Sirius." Severus explained.
"They would never! None of them! How could you even think that!?" Harry growled.
"What were they even fighting about?" Harry asked in confusion.
Severus sighed.
"Sirius accused George of having sex with you. Apparently, you got rather angry during your conversation with Sirius when a kiss got brought up. Sirius was worried about how you were behaving and about the answers you had given him." Severus said.
Harry buried his head in his hands.
Severus gave Harry a few moments. Harry's face was so red his ears were even turning pink. He was also shaking quite a bit. Severus was just about to offer Harry a calming draught when he finally spoke.
"After everything you all dug up this summer, I just wanted one private thing to myself. I…I never…" Harry trailed off with a sigh.
"Never what, Harry?" Severus asked quietly.
Harry raised his head and met Severus' eye for a moment before focusing over his shoulder.
"I never knew it could be like that." Harry whispered quietly.
Severus brows creased in confusion.
"Like what?" Severus asked cautiously.
Harry's cheeks pinked a little and he took a deep breath.
"Comforting. I just wanted to keep that kiss to myself. A memory I could look back on, that was so unique to me. Sirius was trying to pervert it like we'd been snogging…or… or more. and it…it wasn't that. It wasn't even romantic. It was just…kind." Harry said as his voice cracked a little.
Severus himself felt a little choked up. George had been right. Harry really didn't know what to do with comfort. Severus knew it himself, in the way Harry reacted when he attempted to comfort him with a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry that we jumped to such an extreme conclusion. I did not tell you any of this to further upset you. My intention was to say that we have all been deeply concerned about you. Even to the level of suspecting those we know and trust. That is to say, Merrick Fletcher is scum. I'd have no hesitation in ripping Albus apart, a man I have trusted for nearly half my life, if I found out he'd laid a hand on a child." Severus said, his voice growing angrier as he went.
Harry gave him an unsure look.
"None." Severus said firmly.
"I'm sorry you were put in a position where you believed naming your abuser would not be believed or cause further conflict. I promise you though Harry, those who know and love you will not doubt you." Severus said with conviction.
Harry's eyes scanned over Severus face. He could tell that Harry was looking for deception. He let his walls down as much as he could.
Harry finally gave a hesitant nod.
"What happens now?" Harry asked quietly.
Severus sighed and considered what to tell him.
"I told Sirius and Remus that we would discuss it once we are all back at the castle. I didn't think it was wise to put more stress on them then necessary while they are away." Severus said softly.
Harry gave him a sad smile.
"Thank you." Harry said quietly.
"You may be part of that conversation if you want to be, however none of us will force you to. I'm not sure what will happen to be honest. There are a few different options, and I suspect that we will discuss those when we have a chance to all talk." Severus explained.
Harry sighed deeply and nodded.
"In the short term, I would like your permission to inform Molly and Arthur." Severus said.
Harry got an alarmed look on his face.
"Just that they need to keep an eye out for him. We don't need to go into the details of why. They will be taking you to Diagon, as well as to the train. I want you to be safe." Severus explained.
Harry shoulders fell and he nodded.
"Okay." Harry whispered quietly.
They sat quietly for a moment while Severus considered the next part of their discussion. He was dreading it, but it needed to be done.
"May I see your hand?" Severus said holding out his own hand on the table.
Harry stared at it for a long moment before looking back up at Severus.
"I haven't hurt myself." Harry said defensively.
Severus sighed.
"I believe you. I still need to see your arm." Severus insisted.
Harry sighed before setting his hand in Severus' hand.
Severus pushed up his sleeve until he could see the large bruise on his arm. He studied it for a moment before looking back up at Harry.
"Harry." Severus called softly.
Harry's gaze only flicked to his for a moment.
"Did he hurt you anywhere else? Touch you anywhere else?" Severus asked quietly.
He didn't want to make Harry uncomfortable, but he also didn't want to overlook other possible injuries. It would be better to have this addressed now.
Harry blushed and shook his head.
Severus studied Harry for a moment, but Harry wouldn't look at him.
"I'm not trying to embarrass you. I just want to make sure you're all right." Severus said.
Harry nodded and looked down.
"I'm fine. He just grabbed my arm. I twisted away and ran." Harry explained.
Severus nodded.
"May I apply some bruise balm to this?" Severus asked.
Harry nodded and Severus pulled a small pot from his pocket. He made quick work of applying the balm and released Harry's arm the moment he was done.
They sat there quietly for a few minutes.
"Are you going to be alright?" Severus asked.
He knew Harry was upset but he didn't want to miss something. The mutts had entrusted him with Harry again and he feared making another mistake.
Harry nodded.
"Yeah, I think so. Thank you for letting George stay last night. And thank you for talking with me." Harry said quietly.
"I will do whatever I can to help you." Severus said firmly.
Harry gave him a grateful smile and nodded.
"I'll get breakfast started." Harry said standing from his chair.
Severus nodded.
"Thank you. I'd like for us all to get our packing wrapped up before we go to town. I need to make a quick stop at the chemist before we head to Mary's." Severus said, standing and heading to the coffee pot.
"Do you brew for him?" Harry asked casually over his shoulder as he dug out ingredients from the fridge.
Severus smiled. Harry actually did seem okay, to Severus' surprise. He seemed a little down, which was understandable. He wasn't crying or panicking though. It didn't even look like he was occluding. This was a big step for Harry, and he was proud of him.
He hoped there last day could be a good one, despite the rough beginning.
Severus explained the potions he sold in town, and some about his friendship with Herbert while Harry made breakfast.
"I did it!" Remus cheered with a bright smile.
Sirius heart swelled at the look on his face. They'd come back to the congress building to get Remus test results and license if he passed.
Sirius had never doubted for a minute that he would.
"Congratulations, Remus. I knew you could do it." Sirius said, wrapping him in a tight hug.
Remus stepped back but the smile stayed firmly on his face. The full moon last night hadn't slowed him down at all. Sirius was amazed at the difference two months had made in Remus. With the painful transformations behind him he was actually getting healthier. Although, he'd still been unbelievably itchy last night. He hoped to discuss that with Severus and see if he had any answers.
"Should we celebrate?" Sirius asked.
Remus nodded enthusiastically.
Sirius smiled again as he guided Remus out of the building and considered where to go. He was thankful that Remus was allowing himself to be happy. He'd cried for hours yesterday after they'd finished their floo call with Severus.
Remus was berating himself because they had left Harry behind. Saying that they should have stayed, and what if something happens. Remus was worried about this sending Harry into another crisis. He'd gone on and on and eventually cried himself into a stressful sleep.
Sirius was mostly angry. He knew Harry would be safe with Snape and the Weasley's until they got back to school though. He had wanted to yell at Severus for not telling them more, but was also thankful that Remus didn't have more fuel for his emotional breakdown.
They'd talked briefly about it today and had tried to put it away for now. There wasn't anything they could do for Harry until they got back. The best they could do for Harry was complete their business so that the trip wouldn't be wasted.
"How about we go to that little café we passed on our way here? Then we can go pick out something to wear tomorrow?" Sirius suggested.
Remus nodded happily and they set off.
Remus looked himself over in the changing room. Sirius had left him here to try on suits and said he wanted to be surprised. Remus wasn't sure what to think about that. He wanted Sirius to pick out something nice to wear as well. Their wedding wasn't going to be anything special. They'd found a witch in a directory at the congress building who was free tomorrow. There wouldn't be anything special about the ritual. No family, no friends, no decorations. Still, it was their wedding, and he wanted them to look nice.
There was a knock on the door as he pulled off a tan jacket and hung it back up. It looked nice, but it wasn't what he was looking for.
"Yes?" Remus called.
"I've got something else for you to try." The wizard said.
He'd followed Remus around the whole shop helping him. Remus appreciated it. Sort of. However, it was a little overwhelming.
He pushed the door open and was handed a dark green tuxedo. Remus raised an eyebrow. He wasn't sure about green. But nodded and took it anyway.
He was amazed at how well it actually looked on him. The color complimented his hair and skin nicely and brought out the color of his eyes. He smiled at his reflection in the mirror. He rubbed his chin and decided he would shave and maybe try and get a haircut today. The last month had left him looking rather disheveled.
Remus stepped out of the dressing room and the wizard smiled at him.
"Very nice." The wizard said with a nod.
Remus smiled and felt his face heat a little. He never felt like he looked that good. He did like how this fit though. He thought Sirius would as well.
"I'll take it." Remus said.
Sirius apparated back near the shop where he'd left Remus. He'd picked up his outfit when Remus was getting his test results. He'd had other things to see to today. He hoped Remus had found something he liked. Sirius had made sure Remus had enough gold to buy anything he wanted in the shop. Remus had protested to start but eventually conceded.
Sirius caught sight of Remus as he stepped out of the shop past him. Sirius stepped forward and wrapped his arm around his waist.
Remus squeaked a little as he looked over his shoulder.
Sirius smiled broadly at him.
"Find what you needed?" Sirius asked.
"Yes." Remus nodded with a smile.
"We should head back. Give Harry a call and then maybe we can take a walk." Sirius suggested.
Remus' brows creased a little in concern and he nodded.
"Yeah, I want to see how he's doing." Remus said.
Sirius could hear the worry in his voice. He had to admit he was worried as well. He hoped Harry was doing better today. His mind kept supplying the blank unseeing eyes staring down the hall, the unmoving shell of a person that Harry had been the first few days after he'd come to stay with them.
He hoped Harry wasn't back in that place.
Draco shoved the last of his things in his trunk. He was packed though the anxiety was rolling around his stomach like lead. He was hesitant about going to the Weasleys. Severus had reassured him that he would be safe. Draco wasn't so sure about that, but he was left with little choice but to trust it.
He picked up the book on his bed and smiled. It was the book of poems and stories Harry had lent him. He grabbed the bag of things he'd picked up at the broom shop and walked out of his room.
Harry's door was open, so he gently knocked on the frame to get his attention.
"What's up?" Harry said looking up from his trunk.
Draco held up the book and Harry smiled.
Draco returned the smile and felt the small flutters return to his heart. Harry seemed all right today. He still didn't know what had happened yesterday but whatever it was, Harry seemed to be moving past it. There was still an anxious look about him and he hoped it would fade.
"This Poe guy's kind of dark." Draco said with a chuckle.
Harry shrugged his shoulder and tucked the book away.
"Here. This is for you." Draco said holding out the bag.
Harry raised an eyebrow and reached for the bag. He peered inside and looked back up to Draco.
"Some things I thought you'd like. It's a 'Thank you' for the broom." Draco explained.
Harry bit his lip as he looked back in the bag. Draco hoped he'd made the right decision.
When Harry looked back up, he was smiling, and Draco felt himself relax.
"Thank you. I really appreciate it. Maybe we can play a seeker's game at the Burrow with the snitch. Now that you've got a broom." Harry said with a smile.
Draco smiled back brightly.
"I'd like that." Draco said with a nod.
Harry nodded back and tucked the bag into his trunk. Draco hoped that the gifts were okay. He'd bought Harry a snitch and a new pair of gloves. Seekers went through them quickly.
His stomach felt all warm and fluttery as Harry stood and stretched, before shaking the long silky hair out of his face.
"We should head down." Harry said, hiking his bag onto his shoulders.
Draco blinked stupidly before nodding and following Harry.
Harry smiled as they walked to Mary's. He'd done his shopping and was happy to have had a chance to say goodbye to all the wonderful people he'd met in town. Julie had unexpectedly hugged him and thanked him for standing up to Mark. Harry had hesitantly hugged her back and told her that he hoped the rest of her summer went well.
Noah, at the art store, had been happy to hear how much Harry had appreciated his gift. Harry had bought several more supplies and Noah asked that he send him one of his drawings sometime. He pointed to a wall of art from different people in town and it made Harry smile that the man considered him part of the community.
The Harding's had been pleased to hear that Harry liked the music they'd picked. He and Draco hadn't made it over there the day they had talked about it. They looked through the tapes and picked out a few more as well as a splitter and another set of headphones. Harry hoped to ask Mr. Weasley if there was a way to charm the player so he could use it at Hogwarts.
He'd been disappointed to find that the diner and grocery were already closed for the night. It was a bit early, but the summer was winding down and things just weren't as busy.
He thought he might write the Willson's a letter to tell them how much he appreciated everything they had done for him this summer.
As they approached Mary's gate Harry smiled. The yard was in full bloom. All the work he'd put into it really showed.
Snape led them up the walk and Harry appreciated each plant as they passed. He caught Draco looking at him and gave him a little smile. To Harry's confusion, Draco blushed and looked away from him.
Harry shook his head at Draco's strange behavior.
"Welcome." Mary said as she opened the door.
"Good evening." Snape said politely as they all walked into the house.
"It's such a nice evening and Max made my yard so lovely, I thought we'd dine out back." Mary said, leading them through the kitchen and out the back door.
Harry smiled when he realized that not only was Maggie there but so were the Willson's. Harry nodded to John who was sat at one end of the table. Harry recognized them all except for a woman around John's age who was sat next to him. Harry assumed it was his wife. She looked vaguely familiar, and Harry wondered if he'd seen her in town.
"Take a seat. We don't want the food to get cold." Mary said bustling them over to their seats.
The food was delicious, and the conversation was light. Harry was happy this was how he was spending his last night here.
Mary stood when the meal was over, and Harry offered to clear the table. Mary just shook her head.
"I'll let John handle that." Mary said.
To Harry surprise, John pulled his wand and sent the items on the table to the kitchen. Harry anxiously looked to the Willsons.
Jack rolled his eyes and Jane grinned.
"Our son went to school with John." Jane said.
"When Mary told us you were part of that world, I wasn't even surprised." Jack said with a huff, shaking his head.
Harry smiled. He considered for a moment and allowed his eyes to return to their normal color. When he met Janes eyes she smiled.
"Ah! An Evans. I suppose that makes sense. No wonder you have such an excellent work ethic." Jane said.
Maggie looked shocked and Harry wondered if he might get a chance to ask her about her friendship with his mother.
Suddenly a Chocolate cake with 'Happy Birthday Max' appeared in front of him. The top held sixteen candles.
Harry looked up to find everyone smiling at him.
An off-key rendition of Happy Birthday followed. Harry thought about how wonderful this summer had been. There had been really difficult parts, but he tried not to focus on that.
"Make a wish." Draco whispered quietly from beside him.
Harry turned and gave him a soft smile before closing his eyes.
Harry thought for only a second.
'I wish I didn't have to die.' Harry thought as he blew out the candles.
His life this summer had been the best he'd ever experienced. Even with all of the hard parts. He wished he could come back here. Maybe even live here someday. Truly be part of this little community that had accepted a runaway with open arms. He wished he could get to know Snape and Draco more. Settle into the family he'd found with Sirius and Remus. He wished that there wasn't war looming over them. That people weren't suffering. He wished that life wasn't always so cruel.
Harry opened his eyes and wiped at a tear that had escaped.
"Thank you all. For this and…and everything you did for me this summer. I'll never forget it." Harry said softly, meeting the eyes of those around him.
"We're so glad that we got to know you." Mary said with a smile.
Harry smiled and nodded.
He cleared his throat and reached for the plates before he began to cut the cake and hand out slices.
They chatted quietly and Harry had a chance to ask all his questions. Maggie had been friends with his mother for a few years before she'd moved away. John's wife looked familiar because she was a French reporter, who had come to report on the tri-wizard tournament. The Willson's son was also a Muggleborn who now lived in Greece.
Harry nibbled on his cake and happily chatted with everyone. Even Snape and Draco had made light conversation.
Harry's heart felt full.
Remus took a deep breath as he tossed in the floo powder and called for Spinner's End. He was worried about Harry. He wished they could have just brought Harry with them. They hadn't run into much trouble here. He probably would have been safe. Remus knew that 'probably' wasn't good enough though. They also wouldn't have been able to do a lot of the going out that they had done. Remus had enjoyed the reprieve.
"Good evening, Severus." Remus said softly when the room came into focus.
Severus set his book in his lap and looked up.
"I'll get Harry." Severus said.
"Wait." Remus called and Severus turned back to look at him.
"Is he okay?" Remus asked worriedly.
Severus expression didn't change from the neutral one he was wearing.
"I'll let you ask him that." Severus said striding from the room.
Remus felt his whole body relax when Harry walked in and had a smile on his face.
"Hi Remus." Harry said brightly as he sat on the floor in front of the floo.
"Hi Pup." Remus replied with a smile.
"How's the states? You guys having fun over there?" Harry asked.
Remus nodded.
"It's different. I got my Healer's license today." Remus said.
Harry's smile grew even bigger.
"Congratulations. That's awesome." Harry said.
"Thank you." Remus replied.
"Are you guys still getting married tomorrow?" Harry asked.
Remus felt his cheeks blush a little and nodded.
"Yes, tomorrow evening. Sirius says he's got it all worked out." Remus said with a nervous chuckle.
When Sirius had told him he would take care of everything, Remus had been hesitant. He supposed he couldn't mess up meeting someone for a quick ritual though.
Harry laughed and it made Remus' heart happy to hear.
"I can't wait to hear about it. Don't worry about calling tomorrow. I think we'll both probably be pretty busy." Harry said.
Remus gave him a concerned look. They'd already missed two calls this week.
"Are you sure? We'll always make time for you Harry." Remus asked cautiously.
Harry nodded and smiled.
"Yeah, I'm sure." Harry said.
Remus nodded hesitantly.
"Are…Are you okay, after what happened yesterday?" Remus asked worriedly.
He didn't want to bring Harry down from his obviously good mood, but he needed to make sure he was all right.
Harry shoulder slumped a little and his smile disappeared.
"I think I'm okay. It was…It was upsetting but I'm trying not to let it ruin what little summer I have left. Snape said we can discuss it when were back at school." Harry said flatly, as he looked down at the floor.
Remus nodded. Harry actually did seem to be all right. He admitted that it had upset him and acknowledged that it needed to be addressed. He didn't look like he was occluding. Perhaps things were actually improving.
"How do you feel about that?" Remus asked.
Harry shrugged.
"I've got some time. I think it'll be all right. I…I don't want to talk about it but…I know we should." Harry said softly, looking back up at Remus.
Remus gave him a sad smile and nodded.
"What did you do with your day?" Remus asked, hoping to move off of the more serious topic.
Harry smiled a little and told him about his outing in town. Then about the dinner with his friends. Remus was relieved that Harry's day had gone so well.
"Would you like to speak to Sirius?" Remus asked.
Harry smiled and nodded.
Remus pulled his head from the floo and turned to Sirius who was sitting on the couch.
"He seems like he's in a good mood." Remus said.
Sirius smiled.
"Good." Sirius said slowly climbing off the couch.
Sirius scooted closer to the fireplace and stuck his head in.
Remus relaxed on the floor against the couch. He felt so relieved that Harry was doing all right. He smiled softly at Sirius back. He couldn't believe things might finally be working out. They'd be married tomorrow night and then off to teach at Hogwarts together. They'd get to see Harry more often. If it wasn't for the war simmering back home, things would almost be perfect.
Harry was standing at the end of the hall near the door when Snape came down the next morning. He'd woken up early and just couldn't fall back asleep. He was anxious about seeing his friends again. He felt like he'd lived an entire life in the last three months. He kept debating whether to shift into the form they would recognize or not. Should he tell them about this summer or not?
Snape approached and crossed his arms over his chest as he came to a stop in front of Harry.
"What are you doing?" Snape asked curiously.
Harry bit his lip and considered what had led him to standing here.
"Trying to see the house the way I did two months ago." Harry said glancing up at Snape.
Snape raised a confused eyebrow and waited.
Harry sighed.
"When I first came here, I thought it was punishment. I was being punished for running away. Being pushed away by Sirius and Remus. Turned away again by Professor Dumbledore. I was afraid." Harry admitted quietly.
Snape nodded but said nothing.
"I don't see it that way anymore. It's…" Harry stopped himself.
He knew what he was going to say sounded foolish.
"It's home. I love Hogwarts and have considered it home since I first came to the magical world. I had the thought when I left the cottage that I was going to miss it. I was finally starting to feel comfortable there. Like it could be home. I wondered if it was how my classmates felt leaving at the end of the summer. I've never felt that way. I couldn't wait to get back to school. This…this seems harder than that though." Harry explained.
Harry took a deep breath as he felt the beginning of tears prick his eyes.
"I…I really don't know if I'll ever be here again." Harry said in a choked whisper.
"So much about my life changed while I was living here and I'm…I'm having a hard time letting it go." Harry said softly looking up to Snape.
Snape gave him a tight smile.
"I'm glad you were able to find comfort in my home. You will always be welcome here Harry. I'm sure Mary and the others would like to see you again as well." Severus said with a nod.
Harry smiled and blinked away the tears in his eyes.
"Thank you." Harry said sincerely. He hoped it conveyed just how thankful he was for everything Snape had done for him.
He hoped that he would come back to this place. Come back to the calmness that Snape's home had offered. Everything felt so uncertain at the moment. The war left everything up to chance. Perhaps there was a chance where he'd be able to return.
"I know you are leaving today, but don't forget will be seeing each other in just a couple of days. If you ever need anything Harry, my door is always open. Here or at school." Snape said earnestly.
Harry nodded his understanding and thanks.
Snape nodded and turned to walk towards the kitchen.
Harry smiled again and followed him.
They sat quietly enjoying their coffee until Draco joined them.
Harry's stomach felt all twisty again as he looked at Draco.
Draco hadn't gotten ready yet and his hair was still ruffled, and his cheeks were a little pink from sleep.
Harry watched from the corner of his eye as Draco ate his breakfast. He smiled a little at the happy little smile that played at the corner of Draco's lips as he ate. Harry was glad he enjoyed the meal.
Harry felt his heart flutter strangely when Draco looked up at him.
Harry shook his head, trying to get the strange feeling to leave. He stared into his coffee. Clearly his mind was just addled from a lack of sleep.
Draco stretched and stood from the table when he had finished eating.
"I'm going to go get ready. When are we leaving?" Draco asked with a yawn.
"We've still got a couple of hours. I told Molly we would floo over before lunch." Snape answered.
Draco nodded groggily and walked out of the room.
Harry snorted and shook his head. He caught sight of Snape and smiled.
"He's not much of a morning person, is he?" Harry said.
Snape smirked.
"No. It's even worse during term." Snape said with a shake of his head.
Harry nodded.
"Sounds like Ron. I have to wake him with threats of no breakfast sometimes just to get him up." Harry said with a laugh.
Snape looked a little more serious and Harry wondered what was wrong.
"I wonder if I might ask a favor." Snape said.
Harry nodded.
"Draco is hesitant about heading to the Burrow. I'm sure you understand. We've all gotten used to one another, but your friends will likely see him the same way they always have." Snape said.
Harry bit his lip and nodded.
"Could you please try and keep the peace. At least until school starts. I know you'll want to spend time with your friends but if you could just…" Snape sighed and brought his hand up to his face.
"I'll do what I can. Ron and Hermione can be understanding…when they want to be." Harry said with a small laugh.
Severus nodded.
"I know it won't be easy for Draco when we return to school. I hope you'll at least consider still being friendly with him. I'm not sure he'll have many when we return." Snape said, concern thick in his voice.
Harry sighed and nodded. He knew Draco was stressed about going back. He would be friends with Draco if that's what the other boy wanted. He hoped they could stay friends.
Harry nodded again and smiled.
"I'll try." Harry said.
Snape nodded. Harry could see the hesitation in his eyes. It was clear he was worried about how things would look when they got back to Hogwarts. Harry wondered if he was concerned about his own safety as well.
Harry stared into his trunk for something to do. Draco was still getting ready for the day and Snape had disappeared to the lab.
Harry moved a few things around. He considered pulling out his guitar but didn't want to make a ruckus. He'd learned a few things from Sirius, but it still didn't sound particularly good. He looked over his books but felt too restless to study.
His hand brushed against a box, and he considered it for a long moment. He'd discover the box in the things from Godric's Hollow. He had no idea what it was, but had taken it anyway. It had glowed with a magic aura that he'd seen on his mother's potions book.
He bit his lip and considered it for a long moment. He wasn't sure he was ready for more emotional upheaval today. However, he didn't know when he'd have a private moment again. Certainly not at the Burrow.
With a sigh he pulled the box out. It wasn't much larger than a shoe box, though the weight made him think it was likely larger on the inside. It was wooden and had ornate carvings around the sides. After studying the box for a moment, he realized that they were lilies.
The box was familiar in a way. As he sat on the bed with the box in front of him, he realized it matched one that his aunt had. Although hers had petunia's carved into it. They'd clearly been hand carved. Harry supposed they were something they'd had since childhood.
With a deep breath he laid his hand on top. He had no idea what kinds of wards were on the box. He'd learned a little about warding this summer, but he was hardly a curse breaker.
To his surprise the box clicked as soon as his palm laid flat on the top. His mother must have charmed it to open to his magical signature.
With another deep breath he pulled open the box. In the lid was a small mirror and above it was an inscription that said, 'To my Lilypad, love Dad'.
Harry smiled at the sweet note.
He looked into the box and found that it was in fact larger then he had expected. It looked like it had once been a simple jewelry box. There were a few pieces of jewelry tucked onto a velvet lined shelf. A necklace with a Lily and a rose, a wedding band, and a ring that looked like it had been constructed of some wire and a pebble.
Harry gently touched each before looking at the rest of the box. There was what appeared to be a child's journal. The kind with a small lock hanging from it. There were also various small items, shells, rocks, small toys.
He set each on the bed next to him as he continued to search.
He stopped when he saw an envelope with his name on it. He reached in and lifted it only to find more envelopes. Harry collected them all and pulled them into his lap.
The top two had his name on the front. The next said Sirius, then Remus, then there were two to Snape. He flipped through and found that there were also letters addressed to McGonagall, Dumbledore, and Neville's parents, and even one to Peter Pettigrew.
Harry laid them all on his lap and just stared at them. He took a deep breath and set all of them next to him except the two that were addressed to him.
The top one had flowy handwriting that he recognized as his mother's. He'd seen the writing in her potions book. The writing on the other was messier and a little sharp. Closer to his own writing. He wondered if it was from his father.
He bit his lip a little and opened the one he was fairly sure was from his mother.
Dear Harry,
I've instructed Remus to give you this letter when he feel's it's appropriate. Hopefully, you'll never see it. I hope to be watching you flying on your broom or helping you pick your N.E.W.T classes today instead.
The war is getting worse though, and a friend of mine has warned us that we are now targets. We've been living here for a few months now, but I don't feel any safer than I did when we were in our last house.
If you are reading this, we died. I hope that if that is the case, you have survived. I hope that you have grown and have a happy life. I hope the war is over and you only know times of peace. I hope you know how loved you are. I couldn't have loved anyone more if I tried.
I'm sorry you've had to grow up without us. I hope that Remus and Sirius haven't spoiled you too much. Heaven's knows Sirius would buy you anything. Who buys a one-year-old a broom?
They love you so much Harry. Your father and I snuck away for a while a few months back. Just to get out of the house. When we came home, I found the three of you sound asleep together on the couch. You all looked so happy and content. I realized then that as much as you will always be my son, you are their son too.
You cry for 'Moomoo' when you're hurt, and Dadafoo' when you do something magical. The light in their eyes when they hear you calling is all I need to see to know that they will always love you.
Your father has taken to packing you around on his shoulders as he putters around the house. He's so proud to be your dad.
Today, you wouldn't let me set you down. It was as adorable as it was exhausting. You even 'helped' cook dinner. We're expecting a friend tonight. Though If you are reading this, I suspect he isn't truly our friend.
Please keep yourself safe Harry. I love you from the bottom of my heart.
Mom
Harry had a steady stream of tears rolling down his cheeks when he finally set the letter down.
He took slow deep breaths as he took in everything the letter had said.
He wiped his face and tucked the letter back in its envelope. Looking over the other letters, he resolved to make sure they all made it to who they were intended for. Though he wouldn't be seeking out Wormtail.
He also wasn't sure what to do with the letter to Neville's parents. Perhaps giving it to the boy himself was the best option.
He considered the other letter to himself and shook his head. One letter had been enough for him today.
With shaking hands, he placed them all back in the box except for the two with Snape's name on them. He returned the random trinkets and closed the box.
Closing his eyes, he took slow breaths to try and calm himself. His mother's words had meant so much to him, but they had also cut deep. She'd been so sure that Sirius and Remus would be the ones raising him. He felt that hurt and anger that he'd felt as he'd stared at their headstone. He wondered if the letters to Sirius and Remus explained better what had happened. Why they hadn't told them.
With a sigh he climbed back off of his bed and returned the box to his trunk. He couldn't handle anything else emotional right now.
He pulled out the copy of Fellowship of the Ring, that Mary had gifted him and settled back on his bed. He just wanted to get lost in the Shire for a while.
Harry's brows furrowed as he looked up from the book on his lap. There had been a knock at his door. He hadn't heard footsteps so he assumed it must be Snape.
Harry waved his hand and opened the door. Snape was standing on the other side with a small box in his hands.
"What's that?" Harry asked, setting the book down.
Snape walked into the room and sat at the desk chair. He seemed…stressed.
"These are birthday gifts. I missed them when I packed everything else up. I wanted you to have them before you left." Snape said hesitantly.
Harry felt slightly overwhelmed by the idea of more gifts. He'd been given so much this summer.
Snape held the box out and Harry took it before settling back on the bed.
As Harry looked into the box, he remembered that he had something for Snape as well. The thought of the pictures made him smile. He also had the letters from his mother's jewelry box. He hoped both would be positive things for Snape to receive.
"I have something for you too." Harry said, setting the box on the bed and turning to the side table.
He pulled out three envelopes from the drawer and held them out to Snape.
Snape gazed curiously at the envelopes before taking them from Harry's outstretched hand.
"You can look at them later. I…um…I imagine you'll want privacy for them." Harry said softly.
He'd certainly been thankful he hadn't opened that box anywhere other than in the privacy of his bedroom.
Snape nodded.
"Do you um…want me to open these now?" Harry asked softly looking into the box from Snape.
Snape nodded.
"They are nothing big. Just some thing's I thought you might like." Snape said casually.
Harry bit his lip and pulled the first wrapped box out. He peeled the paper back to find a camera. It was a simple muggle camera. He smiled widely at Snape. He'd love to be able to take some pictures. He wished he'd thought of that earlier in the summer.
"Can I take your picture?" Harry asked with a slightly goofy grin.
Snape raised an eyebrow but reluctantly nodded. Just at that moment, Edgar climbed onto his lap. Harry smiled and wound the camera quickly before taking a picture of Snape and Edgar. He'd seen a slight smile and hoped he caught it in the picture.
Snape gave him an unamused look and Harry set the camera down.
The next gift was much nicer, and Harry started to protest. They were new boots. Leather boots, and they looked expensive.
"They are a necessity. I know all you own are those trainers. How you've managed Scottish winters without frost bite is beyond me." Snape said in his no-nonsense tone.
Harry smiled a little. They were a very nice gift, and he did appreciate them. He could also see Snape's aura around them. Like the man himself the aura was somewhat dark but calm. Like water, his mind supplied.
"They are just muggle boots, but I've charmed them with the same protections I put on my own. They are waterproof of course, but they also have some level of flame resistance. The traction on them is improved to avoid slips on uneven terrain. They also have a certain level of protection against corrosive materials. Though I'd not recommend standing directly under one of Longbottom's potions." Snape said dryly.
Harry smirked. He enjoyed Snapes humor now that he understood it a little.
"Thank you. It is a very nice gift." Harry said, flashing Snape a grateful smile.
Snape did not smile back but Harry could tell he was pleased that he'd liked the gift.
Harry set the boots aside and pulled the last gift from the box.
He chuckled when he opened the last box to find an assortment of muggle chocolate bars.
"I don't usually condone gifting children with sweets. It makes the lot of you far too happy. However, you seem to have an unusually high rate of run in's with Dementors. Consider this like emergency supplies to have on hand." Snape said.
Harry nodded thoughtfully. He supposed Snape was right. Though the small smirk in the corner of his mouth told Harry that the man had truly just bought him a bunch of candy. He appreciated it either way.
"Thanks' I'll keep them with my…" Harry cut himself off. He'd gone to make a joke about keeping them with his potions.
He no longer had his potions though. With a sigh he shook his head.
"I'll make sure to keep them in my bag." Harry said instead.
Snape gave him a concerned look but eventually nodded.
"Very well. I'm going to go let Draco know we need to leave soon. I'd appreciate you being ready shortly. I need to speak with Molly quickly when we arrive, but I'm do in the headmaster's office in less than an hour." Snape said.
Harry gave him a curious look. To his surprise Snape actually gave him an answer.
"Professor McGonagall and I have a mission to go on this evening." Snape said.
Harry could see the anxiety in his eyes. Then to Harry's surprise he caught a brief glimpse of a memory. Something that apparently had come to the front of Snape's mind.
Horcrux. He'd seen the man saying the word in the headmaster's office.
Harry swallowed thickly. He wondered if they'd found another one. Were they going to collect it? Destroy it?
He took a slow breath and stood on shaky legs. Walking to the end of his bed he pushed open his trunk. He shuffled to the bottom before locating the black box he'd kept the Horcruxes in. He could feel his anxiety rising. Every time he thought about them for too long, he began to panic.
He waved his hand over the box twice. Once to clear away the wards and the second time to set a new one.
"Asphodel." Harry whispered. Setting a password for the box.
It only contained the Basilisk fang now. The books and journal had been stored away separately in the hidden compartment in his trunk. He couldn't bring himself to look at them again, but he also couldn't get rid of them.
He knew it wasn't the only way to destroy a Horcrux. It was safer than casting Fiendfyre though.
Holding out the box to Snape he felt some of the tension leave his body. Perhaps He wouldn't have to manage all of this on his own.
"What is it?" Snape asked, taking the box.
"It's very dangerous. Handle it with extreme care. I think it will aid you on your mission." Harry answered somewhat cryptically.
Snape continued to stare at him.
"Dumbledore will understand. The password to the box is Asphodel." Harry said, as he closed his trunk and shrunk it down.
Harry quickly put it in his bag, then slipped on his shoes. Snape was still staring at the box.
"I'm ready when you are." Harry said with a firm nod.
Snape glanced at him in confusion before he also stood.
"I'll collect Draco. Meet us in the sitting room." Snape said distractedly.
Harry nodded.
He took a quick look around the room and remembered that he might not return. With a deep breath, he headed to the sitting room.
Severus watched as Harry disappeared down the stairs. He looked down the hall to Draco's room before turning to his own.
When he was securely ensconced in his own bedroom he pulled the envelopes from his pocket. He had an uneasy feeling about them and wanted to make sure the boy wasn't trying to 'pay him back' again or had written something important down that would need to be addressed.
He opened the first envelope and was shocked to discover photos of him and Lily. His hand shook as he pulled them out. He couldn't believe she'd held onto them.
He felt a knot twist in his stomach. He should give them back to Harry. He deserved to have the photos of his mother.
He blew out a slow breath and returned them to the envelope. He assumed Harry had found them in the vault.
He set the envelope on his dresser and opened the next one. His hands were still shaking. His name was on both envelopes. One was certainly Lily's flowy handwriting. The other he didn't recognize.
The envelope held a letter he realized. He took a step back and sat down on the side of his bed as he unfolded the letter from his old friend.
With a shaky breath, he prepared himself for what it might say.
Sev,
It feels strange to be writing you a letter after so many years. I have so many things I want to tell you. I wish I could see you in person but I'm not sure how that would look right now. I plan to send this at the end of the week. We have some business to address, and I want that handled before I send this.
I want to apologize to you for the way things worked out. I was so heartbroken when we went our own ways. I was afraid for us both. I'm sorry I never wrote you back. I kept all of your letters. I know from your perspective it probably looked like I chose their side over you. That I picked our bullies over you. I swear to you Sev, they've changed. I didn't want to believe it at first.
How could they change? They made things so miserable for us both. It started with Remus. He and I got along well enough. James and Sirius took more time. Something in them had changed when we all came back for our sixth year. I don't know what happened. Slowly over the next year I just got to know them more. I felt so alone after what you said to me. I was so angry at you and them.
I spent that summer working and making new friends. I suppose I came back for that term changed as well. I think the war was changing us all. Even then.
I also want to thank you for what you did. James and I love our son. I hope one day you know what that kind of love feels like. To look at a child and know that you would do anything to keep them safe.
I know it was you who brought the prophecy to you-know-who. I can forgive you. I have forgiven you. I don't know why you chose the path you did, but I am thankful you have come back to us.
I don't know what will happen, or if I will see you again. I hope I do. I want to know you again. See my friend again. I want you to meet my son. I won't make apologies for James. He's writing his own letter to you. He has agreed to allow me to make you an emergency guardian for Harry.
I'd like to think it wouldn't be necessary, but I fear what will happen.
He's such a sweet boy and already shows such promise. His accidental magic is beautiful. The aura around him is the most brilliant I've ever seen.
He giggled all afternoon when I dressed him up in a pumpkin costume, we picked up for him for Halloween. I can't believe it's only two days away. I'm not sure where this year has gone. It seemed so stressful, but it has flown by.
I'm hoping that will be able to have all of the guardians we have chosen notified by the end of the week. James is talking about taking us out of the country for the Holiday's. It's not safe but I think we all need the break.
I miss you, Sev. Thank you for warning us. You have likely saved our lives.
Love,
Lily
Severus wiped the tears from his face. Lily had forgiven him.
He'd never fully forgive himself. Knowing that Lily forgave him though meant something to him.
He wondered what Lily would think about him having Harry now. How he'd behaved to her son for years. What he'd tried to do for him this summer.
He shook his head. None of it mattered now.
He'd also gotten his answers about the guardianship issues. They'd made the arrangements only day's before they'd died.
With a sigh he tucked the letter away. It was something precious that he would always keep.
He regarded the other letter and assumed it was from James. His jaw tensed and as he opened it. He wasn't sure he wanted to read it. He didn't owe the man anything.
He unfolded the letter and glanced to the bottom. It was in fact from Potter. With a sigh he looked back to the top.
Severus,
This apology is long overdue. I was wrong for the way I treated you in school. I have no excuse. My behavior was deplorable. Not only to you but others as well. I've spent the last few years doing what I can to grow up. Be a man my father would be proud of. Be someone that my son can look up to. Someone my wife feels is worth her time.
They are what matter most to me in this world. I would do anything to protect them. To be the best version of myself.
I admit that being a father is terrifying. Especially with the war all around us.
I say all of this because I want to thank you for helping protect my family. I'm sure you couldn't care less whether or not I die. Perhaps you don't even care one way or another about my son. However, you've given me something precious. Time. I don't know how much we will all have together. I do know that our former house was burned to the ground two days after you informed Albus that we were being targeted.
For this reason, I am thankful for what you have done, despite our past.
Lily hopes to reach out to you. It took her a long time to get over the loss of your friendship. I don't ever want to see my wife that upset again. If you cannot accept my apology, I understand. It is likely coming too late. However, I know Lily would like to speak with you. Perhaps arrangements can be made to facilitate a meeting. If you can't be kind, I respectfully ask that you simply do not respond to her letter.
I believe she would like to rebuild her friendship with you. She's also been spending all of her free time on research. I think she'd like to discuss that with you as well.
Finally, I'd like to address a decision Lily has made. She is seeking to further protect our son. To that end, she has named several people as potential guardians, if the worst were to happen. She would like to add your name to that list as well. I'm less certain about this, but I think you have proven that at the very least you will keep him safe.
Thank you again, Severus.
James Potter
Severus folded the letter back up and considered it for a few minutes before tucking it away in his dresser drawer with a few other letters he had.
It felt like closure on a very painful part of his life. He'd never expected to get such a letter but was grateful for it, nonetheless.
He put Lily's letter and the envelope of pictures in his pocket and headed to the door. He needed to get the boys to the burrow and head to the castle. Albus would be expecting him soon. He considered the box Harry had given him. He was curious but it could wait. The boy seemed to think Albus would understand. Whatever that meant.
Severus shrunk the box and tucked it into his pocket before he knocked on Draco's door. It quickly opened and Severus found himself looking at a rather disheveled Draco.
"What's going on?" Severus asked, stepping into the room.
"I can't find one of my books." Draco grumbled as he shuffled his bedding around.
Severus pulled his wand and looked at Draco with a raised eyebrow. Draco rolled his eyes and nodded.
"What's the title of the book?" Severus asked.
"Folklore." Draco answered.
Severus was surprised by the answer but nodded.
"Accio folklore book." Severus said.
A book came flying from under the bed and into Severus hand.
Draco smiled brightly and took it.
"Thank you. I was worried I'd lost it." Draco mumbled as he tucked it gently into his trunk.
"Something you've found interest in?" Severus asked in curiosity.
Draco's cheeks blushed a little. A sign that Severus had mostly started to associate with Draco's crush on Harry. He rolled his eyes and waited for a reply.
Draco shrugged as he shrunk his trunk and pocketed it.
"It is interesting." Draco said nonchalantly.
Severus raised a skeptical eyebrow but said nothing.
Draco sighed as he stepped into the sitting room. He felt overwhelmed. This could be the last civil moment he had with Harry. He had no idea what things would look like at Weasley's house. He imagined Harry would put up a mask and Draco would once again be the slimy snake.
Severus was talking quietly to Harry near the fireplace. It looked like he was trying to give something to Harry. He just shook his head and said something softly. To Draco's surprise Severus smiled back and nodded before returning the item to his pocket.
Harry was still in base form and Draco wondered if he would stay like that. If he would when they returned to school. It all felt so uncertain.
Harry turned then and caught Draco's eyes. He smiled and Draco felt like he had snitches dancing in his stomach. He really liked Harry's smile. It was wonderful.
He shook the thought from his head and tried to remember that he was supposed to be working on maintaining their newfound friendship.
"Draco, the address is the Burrow. You can follow Harry through." Severus said.
Harry hesitated in front of the fireplace before shifting his form back to the one everyone knew. Then with a woosh of green flames he was gone.
Severus turned to look at him. He gave him a tight smile. Severus had done a lot for him this summer. He was incredibly grateful that the man had come for him. Even if spending time with the family of red heads for the next few days was the price. It was worth not having to deal with all that had been happening at home.
Draco stepped closer and took some floo powder.
"Thank you for everything." Draco said with a soft smile.
Severus nodded back and Draco stepped closer to the floo.
With one last deep breath Draco threw the floo powder in.
"The Burrow." Draco called as he stepped into the flames, and was swept away from the safety of Spinner's End.
