"Ellekoner getting its first look at the new Huldra tribe," Isabella narrated as we craned our necks to see who was missing. I noticed who it was before Isabella continued, as did most of us, since it was the one we'd been expecting for weeks.

"Josie was eliminated at tribal council," Isabella finished. Yep, sounds right. She hadn't really caused any of her team's losses, as far as I could see, but she was the easiest target.

There wasn't much to see as far as the challenge setup went. There were twenty podiums set up in a circle, ten of them white and ten of them red. When we all took a place at one of them, I saw mine, and presumably everyone else's, had a small slate and a piece of chalk.

"Today's challenge will test your memory and mental fortitude in these trying conditions," Isabella started. "When the challenge begins, I will read a folk tale from our host nation. After I've finished reading, I will ask a series of questions about the tale and contestants will write their answers on their boards. Answer incorrectly and you are eliminated. Last member standing wins immunity and reward for their team. And what are we playing for?"

Isabella lifted the sheet off of one of the large crate at her feet. On top I could see a book, a Frisbee, and various odds and ends. I couldn't suppress a smile when I put it together. I thought we'd filled out those forms for nothing.

"At my feet are the luxury items you selected before arriving," Isabella said. "They may not be critical for survival but they're nice to have, am I right?" After a round of cheers, she continued. "The winning Tribute wins luxury items for their entire tribe. Who's ready to play?"

"There was once a rich farmer in Hvalba on the island of Suðuroy who had a servant called Snæbjørn, meaning "Snow Bear". This Snow Bear was an exceptionally strong and brave man, quick on his feet and skilled at climbing.

Among the peasants' servants there was also a milkmaid named Annika. Snow Bear and the milkmaid were lovers, but it was not allowed for people without property to marry in those days, so they met in secret in the barn.

One day when the judge was in the village, he was served a meal of young pigeons. For this special meal, Snæbjørn had climbed to a certain cave where nobody else would dare to go.

Sometime after this incident, a Dutch ship visited. It was strictly forbidden to buy anything from foreign ships, but Snæbjørn went aboard the ship and bought four silk scarves to give to the milkmaid. For this, Snæbjørn was sentenced to serve four years of imprisonment. Snæbjørn was so angry that he struck at the judge with a stick, but accidentally hit the bailiff instead, who dropped dead on the spot.

Snæbjørn fled towards the mountains. He was so fast and knew the mountain slopes so thoroughly that they had to give up searching for him. He also frequently visited his love in the barn, who was now with child. For three years, Snæbjørn lived as an outlaw in the mountains.

One winter night a ship visited Hvalba. Snæbjørn managed to get onboard and sail away. He was never seen again in the Faroe Islands.

The milkmaid managed to hide her son in the barn until one day he was seen playing on the sandy beach. When asked who he was, the only answer he would give was: "I am my mother's son.""

I was really more of a studier than a memorizer. Just don't go out on the first one…

"In what town did Snæbjørn live?" Isabella's first question came.

Ooh I got this! My chalk was poised. Oh no…

"Spelling need not be exact," Isabella said.

Oh thank heavens. "Hvalba", I wrote.

"The correct answer is… Hvalba," Isabella said. "Everyone remains in the game."

I wasn't known for my memory skills. Neither was Robbie, apparently, since he also raised his hand to sit out. We sat on the bench answering along just for fun and betting on who'd go out first. I'd picked Enzo, while Robbie had his money on Leo.

"What was the milkmaid's name?" Isabella asked.

"Oooooh," I quietly ooh'ed to Robbie. "Sneaky." She'd only said it once. The rest was just "the milkmaid".

At Isabella's signal, the boards went up.

"We have some different opinions this time. Seventeen contestants have written "Annika". Val, ever the contrarian, has struck out on his own with "Anya". Amberlynn is confident in her answer of "Astrid."

"No, I'm not. I just forgot," Amberlynn called forlornly.

"And Alara has pinned her hopes on "Freya"," Isabella finished. "Is this the start of a huge upset? The correct answer is… Annika."

Alara took a seat glumly next to me and Robbie. "Nice one," I teased. "Way to have respect for female characters."

Shep Howard- District Ten male (17)

No one fumbled the question about what meal the judge was served. Pigeon wasn't a good you easily forgot. For my part, I was tentatively hopeful about my chances this challenge. Back on the farm we didn't go into town every day. If you ran out of paper, you better just remember things.

"After the judge visited, a ship arrived. Where was the ship from?" Isabella asked.

It was Dutch, I thought immediately. "The Netherlands," I wrote. At Isabella's signal, we raised our boards.

"In a biting commentary on the Panemian school system, we have a variety of answers," Isabella narrated. "Eleven contestants have written "The Netherlands," with various spellings. Taylor has gotten her ethnic designations confused and wrote that Dutch people are from "Denmark", meaning the ship has gone in a circle. Enzo attempted a save with "Wherever Dutch people are from", which we unfortunately cannot accept. Birdie thinks the ship came from England, while Dorian points his finger at England. The correct answer is The Netherlands."

Two questions passed with no more eliminations. The tension collected as Isabella held up another question card.

"Who did Snæbjørn kill?" Isabella asked.

Oh good, I know this one. I wrote down the answer and waited for the signal. Just as I was raising my board into the air, my stomach clenched.

"We have an almost even split," Isabella started. "Virgo, Yarrow, Leo, Kendall and Lana have written "the judge". Cactus, Persi, Octavia, Trydan, Kallik and Shep have written "the bailiff".

And they're right, I thought helplessly.

"The correct answer is… the bailiff."

Octavia Jacobs- District Two female (18)

We just had to outlast Trydan and Shep. I had no idea how smart they were but I knew Cactus was sharp and I knew my own strengths. I replaced the story in my head as Isabella unfolded her next question.

"What group of islands was Hvalba part of?"

$# $. I had no idea. I went over a globe in my head as I tried to think of island systems.

"More eliminations coming, since we have three different answers. Octavia has selected "The Marshall Islands".

Well I knew it wasn't the Hawaiians

"Trydan, Shep and Cactus have gone with "The Faroe- or "Pharaoh", as Shep stylizes them- Islands". Persi shakes her head as she hold up her answer of "The Scandinavian Islands". Heroic effort, but the correct answer is the Faroe islands."

Here it is. We had just one Ellekoner left. This was the part where we blew it and they won.

"What did Snæbjørn buy, what kind, and how many?" Isabella's question rang out.

It was scarves. I know that much. They must have wanted this to be the last question with how complex it was. Pretty sure they were silk. But how many? He went to prison for four years. It's four, right? The number was sticking in my head. Pick me, it said.

Shep and I gave each other uncertain glances as we all raised our boards.

"Shep has written "four silk scarves". Cactus has written "four silk shawls." Trydan agrees with his tribemate and thinks it's "four silk scarves". Whoever's right wins their tribe immunity reward." Isabella paused to savor the tension. "The answer is… four silk scarves!"

You for real?

We didn't even hear her say the rest of it. Isabella was drowned out in a sea of cheers. The eliminated Huldras streamed off the bench and surrounded me and Shep, scooping us up and carrying us to the prize crate. I didn't even care it was me and Shep who won. We just weren't going to tribal council. We kept looking from one of to another, checking if the others were hearing what we just heard

Isabella stood in front of the crate she hadn't taken the sheet from. We'd assumed it was the other tribe's crate, but clearly there was something else going on.

"Before you go, there's one more element to this challenge," she said. She lifted the sheet. "At my feet I have a crate of rice. This rice could augment your diet, getting rid of those empty stomachs and giving you an energy boost for the rest of the game. Or… The other crate contains your luxury items, but also Ellekoner's. You can choose to take the crate of rice, or you can choose to send Ellekoner's luxury items back to their camp. Maybe it's nothing but goodwill, or maybe it's a social move. So which will it be?"

Shep and I didn't have to look at the others. The answer was obvious.

"We want to share!"

The time has come! It is the time of HULDRA! At long last, they are finally on the board. Also this is the last confirmed absent Tribute I need to clear out, so soon the voting and backstabbing will commence. No voting needed this time, so everyone just relax and celebrate with Huldra.
