It all happened so quickly. gunshots , yelling, a drug dealer running at him. Getting body slammed. Glass shattering, falling. Impact knocking the wind out of him. Crack. Pain exploding from his neck. Darkness.

"JAYYY," Hailey screamed.

It was just supposed to be a normal drug would cuff some perps, process them, head back to the station, write up some reports, then head to dinner. Now, through the chaos and gunfire, like it was all in slow motion, Hailey watched as Jay was tackled by a drug dealer. His back slammed against a glass window, instantly shattering it. Jay didn't stand a chance. Hailey watched as Jay lost his balance, falling backwards through the shattered window.

It wasn;t that Jay couldn't have survived a fall through a first story window. Hailey, however, feared the worst as she watched her husband fall through a third story window. Every fiber of her being panicked in that moment, as he fell out of view, to the ground. All sense of reasoning and logic was gone. Hailey quickly maneuvered around boxes and crates, making sure to stay covered as she advanced toward the window. As soon as she made it to the window, she carefully peered below, and the sight immediately horrified her. Down on the ground below, a suspect was crouched over her husband's unconscious body, punching him over and over again. She couldn't imagine the damage this pummeling was doing to him on top of the damage from the almost 25 foot fall. Her stomach twisted in anger and disgust.

"HEY. STOOOOP." Hailey screamed, like a child. She knew it wasn't going to make a difference but she didn't know what else to do due. Adrenaline was running high and she was in full survival. Somehow, the perp looked up at her, and almost as though he realized he was caught, he quickly stood up and ran away. The blood smeared across his face made her want to vomit.

"Hailey." Adam shouted behind her. She spun around to make eye contact with him.

"Is he okay?" Adam asked, but he could already tell by the horrified look on her face what the answer was going to be. Adam saw the whole thing happen, but also knew that Hailey standing out in the open was not going to end well for her.

"GO." He said. He didn't expect her to run blindly straight through the gunfire but that's exactly what she did. Hailey could only see red. She ran so fast her legs were numb. She took the stairs 5,6 stairs at a time. She made it to the exterior door on the first floor and threw it open. She ran around the building and her heart stopped as she saw Jay laying on the sidewalk, completely still. From where she was, she couldn't even tell if he was breathing. Nothing felt real, she felt like she was trapped in a nightmare.

"Jay," she barely breathed out, running up to him. She was out of breath, shaking from the adrenaline. She kneeled beside him, observing the way his face was starting to swell.

"Ja..Ja…" She stuttered, completely horrified. For a second, all she could do was stare at the blood seeping out of the wounds on his face frozen in terror at how a day could have fone so horribly awry so quickly.

She quickly snapped out of it and cupped her hands on the sides of his neck.

"Jay…Jay." She rotated his head so that it was facing forward instead of sideway. When she did this, she got a pained moan and his eyes flickered for a brief second.

"Jay…Jay…stay with me." she pleaded. His eyes barely cracked open and he moaned again. His eyes panned around. Hailey could see the pain he was in.

"Hang on, Jay. Hang on." She said. She held back the fear that was in the pit of her stomach as she cradled his neck. She could tell by Jay's reaction that he had some sort of injury in his neck but she was hoping that it wasn't broken.

"Hailey…we're all clear up here." Adam's voice came over the radio. This snapped her out of her worried zone-out. She supported Jay's neck with one hand and grabbed her radio with the other hand, so that she could radio dispatch for help.

"50-21 Henry, 10-1,10-1 officer down, I repeat, officer down. Roll an ambo to my location immediately." She pleaded into her radio.

She immediately replaced her hand on Jay's neck.

"Ow." he quietly whispered.

"I know J-" "The others" he cut her off.

"They're okay, Jay."

"Got away." He moaned out, pain dripping from his voice.

"I know Jay. I know. We'll get him." Hailey reassured. Jay's glazed over gaze met her's. His eyes sparkled as the sunlight beamed at just the right angle. The freckles on his face stood out like glitter on the floor after a party.

Hailey observed the blood spilling out of his split lip and knew that talking had to hurt for him. She wanted to undo his vest for him but there was no chance she was going to dare move her hands from his neck. Hailey couldn't tell if Jay could fully feel the pain of his injuries from the adrenaline, but she hoped he couldn't.

at "Hailey…why did he do that?" Jay asked through his half-conscious state.

"I don't know, Jay. I don't know. Just stay with me, Jay. Stay awake."

Jay blinked slowly. He was obviously fading rather quickly.

Hailey stayed frozen. Jay couldn't feel Hailey's warm hands cutting through the pain. Before he knew it, darkness enveloped him like a sweet comforting sea, but her warm hands stayed, tethering him to the real world. Her hands were the only thing that kept him clinging to consciousness. The pain and sounds faded away but her hands remained. All too quickly her hands were ripped away, leaving cold spots in their wake. Something hard and.. plastic-like was slid behind his neck. A front piece was pushed against his chin and clicked into attachment with the back piece. The contraption was tightened and Jay became acutely aware of the uncomfortable sensation of a brace around his neck. He felt trapped, he couldn't move his head. The contraption was adjusted again and suddenly it felt like a thousand pounds of pressure had been released from his head. The brace no longer felt trapping but rather comfortable in a way.

Jay felt the plastic oxygen mask slip onto his face.

Adam held onto Hailey's shoulders as he watched the paramedics pull the elastic band of the oxygen over Jay's head. The paramedics were quick to remove Jay's vest and cut off his jacket, leaving him horribly exposed to the chilly air of winter in Chicago.

He tightened his grip as they rolled Jay onto his side, causing a loud groan from him, knowing this would freak her out. During the roll, Jay's shirt rolled up a bit revealing a patch of bruised skin so dark it was a plum color. Adam heard a gasp from Hailey and knew she had seen it too.

Jay was rolled back over onto a backboard which made him groan again. When they could see his face again, they could see his swollen eyes open, with pain and terror in them.

"They're hurting him, they're hurting him Adam." Hailey pleaded.

"They're not hurting him, Hails." Adam tried to comfort Hailey.

"They are. They're hurting him."

"They're helping him, They're helping him, Hailey. I promise."

Then, like a figment of Adam's worst worries, Hay does the one thing Adam hoped he wouldn't. He tried to look at Hailey out of the corner of his swollen him not be able to move his head and struggle to look at her was like a knife to the gut. They could both see he was struggling so much. They could hear the wheeze of broken ribs even over the oxygen mask.

Jay's shirt was cut open, and electrodes were stuck to his chest. His eyes slowly slipped shut and blood drops rolled down the sides of his face and into his ears.

Adam and Hailey watched as they finished prepping Jay and loaded him up into the ambulance. Adam and Hailey jumped into Adam's car and followed right behind the ambulance.
