As Kagome stood beside Sesshomaru, her heart pounded in her chest, anticipation mixing with a touch of nervousness. She knew she was about to meet the formidable Lady Kimi, Sesshomaru's mother. The stories she had heard about her were enough to make anyone feel a bit apprehensive.
Suddenly, a gust of wind swept through the garden, and Kagome's eyes widened as she saw a massive, ethereal dog demon appear before them. The creature was stunning, its fur a pristine white that seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. The magenta markings on its face were strikingly similar to Sesshomaru's, and a large crescent moon adorned its forehead, just like the one on Sesshomaru's brow.
The dog demon exuded an aura of power and grace, its golden eyes piercing as they regarded Kagome for a brief moment. Kagome felt a shiver run down her spine, not from fear, but from the sheer majesty of the creature before her.
Then, with a fluid motion, the dog demon began to shrink and shift, its form morphing into something more familiar. Kagome watched in awe as the demon transformed into a beautiful, slender woman.
Sesshomaru's mother, Lady Kimi, now stood before them in her humanoid form. Her beauty was undeniable, with fair skin that seemed to glow with an inner light. Her long, silver-white hair was elegantly tied up into pigtails by pale lilac ornaments, with short bangs framing her face. She had pointed ears, slanted gold eyes with slit pupils that were sharp and discerning, and a small, violet crescent moon on her forehead. A magenta lightning-like stripe adorned each of her cheeks, with a matching stripe on each eyelid. Her lips were painted a rich purple, and her nails, sharpened and magenta, added to her fierce appearance.
She wore a kimono in shades of purples, pinks, and whites, the colors blending together in a way that was both regal and feminine. The overall effect was one of elegance and power, and Kagome could see the resemblance between mother and son in the way Lady Kimi carried herself with such confidence.
Lady Kimi's gaze softened as she looked at her son, her stern expression melting into one of warmth. "Sesshomaru," she greeted, her voice melodic yet strong. There was a deep affection in her tone, a stark contrast to the cold demeanor Kagome had been expecting.
Sesshomaru inclined his head in a respectful nod. "Mother," he replied, his voice steady. There was a quiet, mutual respect between them that spoke volumes about their relationship.
Kagome felt a bit out of place, unsure of how to approach this powerful woman who had just greeted her son with such warmth. But before she could dwell on her apprehension, Sesshomaru gently took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"Mother," Sesshomaru began, his voice holding a rare note of formality. "I would like you to meet Kagome, my mate to be."
Lady Kimi's eyes flicked to Kagome, her golden gaze assessing. For a moment, the air seemed to still, the weight of the introduction hanging between them. Then, slowly, a smile curved Lady Kimi's lips.
"Kagome," she repeated, her tone thoughtful. "So, you are the human girl who has captured my son's heart."
Kagome swallowed, feeling the intensity of Lady Kimi's gaze on her. She nodded, managing a small smile. "It's an honor to meet you, Lady Kimi."
Lady Kimi's smile widened, and she let out a light, melodic laugh. "The honor is mine, Kagome. Any who can win over Sesshomaru must possess a rare strength."
There was a hint of teasing in her voice, but also genuine approval. Kagome relaxed slightly, feeling some of her nervousness dissipate.
Sesshomaru, still holding Kagome's hand, looked at his mother with a steady gaze. "Kagome has proven herself many times over," he said, his voice firm with conviction. "She is deserving of your respect, Mother."
Lady Kimi inclined her head, her expression softening further. "Of course, my son," she replied. "I can see that she is strong, indeed."
Kagome felt a warmth bloom in her chest at Sesshomaru's words, his unwavering support giving her the confidence she needed in this moment. She knew that being accepted by Lady Kimi was no small feat, and the fact that Sesshomaru stood by her so firmly only solidified her place by his side.
"Welcome to our family, Kagome," Lady Kimi said, her tone genuinely welcoming. "I look forward to getting to know you better."
Kagome smiled, her heart swelling with a mix of relief and happiness. "Thank you, Lady Kimi," she said, feeling truly accepted.
"Please just call me Kimi."
Kagome listened intently as Lady Kimi and Sesshomaru discussed the upcoming event, her curiosity piqued by the mention of a "courting session." The term sounded formal, almost ritualistic, and Kagome's mind raced with questions about what it entailed. She had remembered that Sesshomaru had mentioned it before, but she had been much to occupied with finding jewel shards and Naraku to worry about learning more.
Lady Kimi's eyes twinkled as she noticed Kagome's inquisitive expression. "You must be wondering what this courting session is all about," she said with a gentle smile.
Kagome nodded, grateful for the explanation. "Yes, I've never heard of anything like it before. What exactly does it involve?"
Kimi's smile widened as she began to elaborate. "The courting session is a tradition among high-ranking demon lords, a month-long festival where the prospective mate is officially courted and presented to the world as the future Lady of the land. It's not merely a private affair but a grand celebration, filled with rituals and ceremonies that are meant to honor the union and ensure its success."
Kagome's eyes widened as she took in the magnitude of what was being described. "A month-long festival? And it's public?"
"Indeed," Kimi confirmed, her tone warm but serious. "As the mate of the Lord of the West, your union with Sesshomaru must be witnessed by the other demon lords and their clans. It's a way to solidify alliances, demonstrate strength, and gain the blessings of the community. It's also an important symbol of continuity and stability in our lands."
Sesshomaru, standing beside Kagome, added, "The festival is not only about celebration but also about proving that the bond between us is strong and enduring. Each day of the festival brings different challenges and rituals that we must undertake together."
Kagome felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety at the thought. "What kind of challenges?"
Kimi's eyes sparkled with both pride and mischief as she explained, "There are many, my dear. The festival begins with offerings to the spirits and ancestors, asking for their blessings on your union. This is followed by a series of tests that both you and Sesshomaru must pass."
Kagome's heart skipped a beat. "Tests?"
"Yes," Sesshomaru interjected, his voice steady and reassuring. "These tests are meant to show that I am capable of protecting and providing for you, as well as ensuring that you are ready to stand beside me as the Lady of the West."
Kimi nodded in agreement. "The first test is one of strength, where Sesshomaru must demonstrate his power and ability to protect you and his lands. It's a display of martial prowess, often in the form of a ceremonial battle with one of the visiting lords. Don't worry," she added with a wink, "he's more than capable."
Kagome smiled, trusting in Sesshomaru's abilities. "And what about me? What do I have to do?"
"The tests for you are just as important," Kimi said. "You must prove your compassion and wisdom, showing that you can be a fair and just ruler. There are ceremonies where you will be asked to bless the land, heal the sick, and provide for those in need. It's a way to demonstrate that you can care for the people and creatures under your protection."
Kagome listened, her nerves slowly giving way to determination. "That doesn't sound too bad," she said, though her mind was already racing with thoughts on how to prepare.
Kimi smiled approvingly. "You have a strong spirit, Kagome. The final tests are perhaps the most challenging. You and Sesshomaru will need to demonstrate your bond in a way that leaves no doubt in anyone's mind. You will be tested on your ability to protect each other, to support one another, and to provide for each other's needs. It's a way to show that you are truly a mated pair, ready to face any challenge together."
Kagome's eyes met Sesshomaru's, and she felt a wave of reassurance wash over her. "I know we can do it," she said softly.
Sesshomaru's gaze softened, his hand squeezing hers gently. "We will."
Kimi's smile was one of pride and affection as she looked at them both. "I have no doubt that you will succeed. The courting session is a time of celebration, but it's also a time to prove that your bond is unbreakable. And when it's over, you will be officially recognized as the Lady of the West, with all the honor and responsibilities that come with it."
Kagome felt a surge of excitement at the prospect. It was a daunting challenge, but it was also an opportunity to solidify her place at Sesshomaru's side and to show the world that their love was something powerful and enduring.
This was her next thing to do then.
To prove that she was capable of standing at his side.
The afternoon sun bathed the gardens in a warm, golden light as Kagome and Lady Kimi strolled through the carefully tended paths, the scent of blooming flowers wafting through the air. The shiro's gardens were vast and beautiful, with winding trails that led through groves of ancient trees, past tranquil ponds, and over gently arched bridges. Kagome walked beside Kimi, feeling a bit more at ease in the demoness's presence, especially after their earlier conversation. Despite Kimi's regal bearing, there was a warmth in her demeanor that Kagome found comforting.
As they walked, Kimi glanced at Kagome with a soft smile. "Kagome, if you don't mind, I'd love to hear how you and Sesshomaru first met. I'm curious about the beginning of your journey together."
Kagome chuckled nervously, her hand absently brushing against the hem of her kimono as she considered how to start. "Well, our first meeting wasn't exactly... conventional. In fact, it was rather dangerous."
Kimi's golden eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Oh? Do tell."
Taking a deep breath, Kagome began her story. "It all started with Sesshomaru trying to find the location of his father's grave. He... wasn't too fond of Inuyasha back then and used a hag to disguise herself as Inuyasha's mother. The plan was to lure Inuyasha into revealing the location of their father's grave, which he didn't even know himself. As I heard that their Father died the day that Inuyasha was born."
"Indeed he had died." Kimi raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in her expression. "A rather silly plan. I find it hard to believe that he would think it would work."
Kagome nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "It was a plan that Jakan had concocted."
"Ah yes, the little imp thing."
"Turns out the grave was inside a pearl that was placed in Inuyasha's right eye, Sesshomaru took it out, then it opened a portal that led to the underworld."
Kimi's eyes narrowed slightly, though her smile remained. "I imagine he wasn't exactly gentle about it."
"Not at all," Kagome admitted with a wry smile. "He was determined to get his hands on the Tessaiga, their father's sword, and didn't care who got in his way. I followed after because I knew that if the pearl was in Inuyasha's eye then it meant that Sesshomaru wasn't supposed to have it, so we followed him to the inside of Toga's corpse. Where the sword was embedded in a pedestal inside his body."
Kimi hummed thoughtfully, her gaze fixed on the path ahead. "Sesshomaru has always been relentless in his pursuits. And yet, you survived."
Kagome's smile softened as she remembered that fateful moment. "I did. Somehow, I managed to draw the Tessaiga from its pedestal, even after Inuyasha and Sesshomaru failed to grab the blade. This made Sesshomaru angry and he tried to kill me, I only survived because I was protected by the blade."
Kimi just giggled from behind her elegant fan.
Continuing, Kagome continued to reminisce. "Sesshomaru transformed into his true form and began to fight with Inuyasha, it was only then did Inuyasha want to protect me did the sword allow him to hold it and transform. That's when Sesshomaru realized that the sword wasn't meant for him, but for Inuyasha. He was... furious, to say the least."
Kimi's lips twitched in amusement. "I can imagine. Sesshomaru has always been very proud, and he doesn't take well to being thwarted."
Kagome nodded, her tone reflective. "He didn't. I think that was the beginning of Sesshomaru's realization that things wouldn't always go according to his plans. It was a long time before we met again, but that first encounter left a strong impression on both of us."
Kimi slowed her pace, her gaze softening as she regarded Kagome. "It seems that your relationship with Sesshomaru has been built on challenges and growth. It's not easy to earn his respect, much less his affection. But you did, and that says a great deal about your strength and character, Kagome."
Kagome blushed at the compliment, feeling a warmth in her chest. "Thank you, Lady Kimi. It hasn't been an easy journey, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Sesshomaru has changed so much since then, and I think we've both learned a lot from each other."
Kimi smiled, her eyes filled with a mix of pride and fondness. "I can see that, Kagome. I'm glad my son has found someone like you. Your bond with him is something truly special, and I believe it will only grow stronger with time."
"I believe so too," Kagome nodded.
Kagome sat cross-legged on the plush futon in her rooms, the dim light of the candles casting a soft glow across the space. She had just finished her bath, the warmth of the water still lingering on her skin as she slipped into a silk nightgown that whispered against her body with every movement. The garment was a connection to her past, something familiar in this world that often felt so different from the one she had left behind.
Spread out before her on the futon were photographs she had brought with her, each one a precious memory from the years she had spent in the modern world. There were images of her as a baby, cradled in her mother's arms; as a little girl, laughing with her family at the shrine; as a preteen, surrounded by friends in her school uniform; and as a teenager, caught between the responsibilities of school and the adventures that awaited her in the feudal era.
Her gaze lingered on a photo of herself at seventeen, just before she had fallen into the well and her life had changed forever. Her younger self looked so carefree, so blissfully unaware of the trials and tribulations that lay ahead. Kagome smiled faintly, tracing a finger over the image, feeling a mix of nostalgia and gratitude for everything she had experienced since that day.
Next to it was a more recent photograph, one taken after she had returned to her own time for good. It showed her standing on the shrine steps, a small, sad smile on her face as she gazed out at the sunset. The weight of the past was clear in her eyes, even in the stillness of the photo. The years she had spent away from her friends, from Sesshomaru, had been long and lonely, but they had also shaped her into the person she was today.
Kagome was so lost in her memories that she almost didn't hear the soft knock on the shoji screen. She looked up just as Sesshomaru slid it open, stepping into her room with his usual quiet grace. He was still dressed in his formal attire, though the stiffness in his posture had eased, replaced by a gentleness that he reserved only for her.
"Koi," he greeted her, his voice low and soothing. His golden eyes swept over the room, taking in the sight of the photographs scattered across the futon. "What are these?" he asked, curious as he moved closer to sit beside her.
Kagome smiled, gathering a few of the photos into her hands as she explained, "They're photographs, memories from my time. They capture moments from my life, from when I was a baby to just before I returned to the past." She held up the picture of her younger self. "This is me when I was seventeen, just before I fell into the well and met Inuyasha."
Sesshomaru took the photograph from her, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied it. "You were so young," he remarked, his voice thoughtful. "It is remarkable how much you have changed since then."
Kagome nodded, showing him another photo of her as a teenager. "This was after I returned to my time. You can see the difference in my eyes… I had already been through so much by then."
Sesshomaru's gaze lingered on the photo, and Kagome saw a flicker of emotion in his eyes—something akin to regret or perhaps understanding. "You have endured much, Koi," he said quietly, his tone carrying a weight of acknowledgment. "And yet, you have emerged stronger because of it."
She offered him a small smile, her heart swelling with affection for him. "Thank you, Sesshomaru. I don't regret any of it… because it brought me here, to you."
He placed the photograph down gently, his hand brushing against hers as he did. "And for that, I am grateful," he murmured, his voice soft but filled with sincerity.
Kagome hesitated for a moment before gathering the rest of the photos into a small stack. "There's more I want to show you." She flipped through them, showing him images of her family, her friends, and moments that held significance in her life. Each photograph was a piece of her history, a story she shared with Sesshomaru as he listened intently, his attention focused solely on her.
When she showed him a picture of her mother holding her as a baby, Sesshomaru's gaze softened even more. "You were cherished," he observed, his voice gentle. "I see now why you have such a strong bond with your family."
Kagome nodded, her eyes misting over with emotion. "They've always been there for me, even when I wasn't sure of my path. And now, I have you, too."
Sesshomaru reached out, cupping her face in his hand, his thumb brushing against her cheek. "You have always had me, koi. Even when we were apart, you were never truly alone."
She leaned into his touch, closing her eyes as the warmth of his hand spread through her. "I know," she whispered. "And now, I'm here… with you. Where I'm meant to be."
For a moment, they sat in silence, the only sound in the room the soft crackling of the candles. Then, Sesshomaru leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead. "Rest now, koi," he said quietly. "You have had a long day, and there will be much more for us to face together."
Kagome nodded, feeling a sense of peace settle over her. She placed the photographs aside, content to let the memories rest for now.
