Shikamaru's POV – First Person

The second phase of the Selections had arrived. Today's task was to evaluate our grace and social skills—how well we presented ourselves and interacted with others. This crucial part of the process would be observed by Minato Namikaze, the Empress Dowager, along with the high-ranking members of Kashina's old harem.

The grand hall where the selection took place was even more opulent than the previous day. Tapestries and gilded decorations adorned the walls, and the polished floor seemed to stretch endlessly before us. A sense of anticipation hung in the air as we prepared to showcase our social skills.

Renji, adjusted my attire one last time. "Remember, young mistress, this is about how you carry yourself and interact with others. Stay composed and gracious."

I nodded, though my nerves were taut. "I'll do my best."

We were gathered in the hall, and I couldn't help but feel the weight of the occasion. Minato Namikaze, along with the former members of Kashina's harem—now dowagers—sat in judgment. They had transitioned from being part of Kashina's harem to advisors and matchmakers, helping Minato with arranging marriages for Kashina's other children. Their presence added an extra layer of formality and expectation to the day's proceedings.

Only the candidates were allowed inside the hall. The servants had to wait outside, either comforting or offering advice to their masters before they entered and comforting or congratulating them upon their return. The separation from our servants is a stark reminder of the intense scrutiny we were under.

As I waited to be called, Renji offered a few final words of encouragement. "Remember to engage with everyone gracefully. No matter the outcome, you've done your best."

I nodded, feeling a mixture of apprehension and determination. "Thanks, Renji."

The process began with us being introduced to Minato and the dowagers. They observed us with sharp, assessing eyes as we mingled with members of the court. The focus was on how well we engaged in conversation, how we carried ourselves, and how we navigated social interactions.

I watched my fellow candidates as they interacted with the court members. Sakura was lively and animated, engaging in cheerful conversation with a courtier. Neji, on the other hand, maintained a reserved but dignified demeanor, exchanging polite words and listening attentively.

When it was my turn, I approached various members of the court, making small talk and discussing various topics with a blend of politeness and genuine interest. The dowagers and Minato observed every detail, from our demeanor to our handling of social situations. It was a grueling experience, with each interaction feeling like a test.

Throughout the day, Minato discreetly signaled to a servant to hand out flowers to those who did not meet the expected standards. The flowers were brightly colored, contrasting with the formal attire of the recipients and marking them as those who had not passed this part of the selection.

As I finished my final interactions and exited the hall, I saw Renji waiting for me. His expression was one of calm reassurance, and he offered a supportive smile. "Well done, young mistress. Let's see what the results are."

I took a deep breath as we walked back to our quarters. The day had been exhausting, but I hoped that my efforts had been sufficient. The presence of the dowagers and their high expectations had made the process even more intense.

Renji's quiet support was a comfort, and as we reached our quarters, I felt a mixture of relief and anticipation. One more phase remained, and I knew it would be the most critical of all.
