Shikamaru's POV – First Person

The tension in the gardens had eased somewhat, though the atmosphere was still heavy with unspoken thoughts. We had passed the final selection, but this was only the beginning of what lay ahead. We stood silently, waiting for our next instructions, some of us exchanging nervous glances, while others looked distant, lost in their own thoughts.

It wasn't long before a servant appeared, bowing deeply before addressing us. "Those who have received the jade coin are to return to your family homes. You will be escorted by two royal guards to ensure your safety and security until your rank is decided, and your entrance into the Forbidden City is confirmed."

The servant paused, eyes scanning the group to ensure we were all paying attention. "Each of you will also be assigned a teacher who will accompany you home and prepare you for your future life within the Emperor's harem. You are to remain at your family home during this time and are advised—no, instructed—not to leave for your own safety."

The underlying threat in that statement wasn't lost on me. 'Safety' was just another way of saying they wanted to ensure we didn't bolt for the hills before officially being tied to the Emperor's harem. Not that I would try to run—my family's honor was at stake—but I couldn't shake the feeling of being a caged bird, watched and monitored at all times.

We were dismissed back to our quarters to pack, or rather, to let our personal servants pack for us. Renji had already begun as soon as we returned to my room, his hands moving efficiently through the task, folding the few personal items I had brought with me.

"You're quiet, young mistress," Renji said, glancing up at me. "You did well today."

"I did what I had to," I said, not really in the mood to talk. My thoughts were a tangled mess of relief and dread. I didn't want this life, but I had no choice. My family's reputation and future were now bound to my performance.

Renji didn't push further, just gave me one of his understanding nods before returning to the packing. When he finished, I heard the faint knock at the door that signaled my escort had arrived.

I stood, feeling the weight of what was to come pressing down on me. "Let's go."

Renji opened the door, and I was greeted by a man with a gentle expression and warm eyes. He looked nothing like the stern, imposing instructors I had imagined. He wore the insignia of a palace tutor, but there was a kindness in his demeanor that caught me off guard.

"Shikamaru Nara, I'm Iruka Umino," he said, bowing slightly. "I'll be your teacher and guide for this transition into your new life."

I nodded. "Pleasure to meet you."

Behind Iruka were two royal guards, standing at attention, their presence a reminder that I wasn't just being escorted for protection. They were here to ensure I followed the rules. As much as this all felt like a cage, I knew there was no way out.

Renji carried my small bag as we made our way outside, where a personal carriage awaited. Iruka followed close behind, along with the two guards who flanked me like silent shadows. I stepped into the carriage, and Renji handed over the luggage to a servant before taking his place beside the driver, outside the carriage. Iruka settled into the seat opposite me.

The ride was silent at first, the gentle creak of the carriage and the muffled sound of hooves against the cobblestone streets the only noise. I leaned back, gazing out the window, watching the city pass by. The familiar sights of Konoha felt strange now, as though I were seeing them for the last time through a different lens.

Iruka broke the silence after a few minutes. "I know this isn't easy for you, Shikamaru. None of this is." His voice was calm, but there was a weight to it. "But the life you're entering is one of great responsibility, not just to your family, but to the Emperor himself."

I sighed, turning my gaze away from the window. "I'm not sure if I'm more worried about disappointing my family or getting lost in the politics of the palace."

Iruka smiled softly. "Both are valid concerns. But I'm here to help you navigate that, to teach you what you need to know. You're a Nara—you have a sharp mind, and that will serve you well in the Forbidden City."

I wasn't sure whether to take that as a compliment or a reminder of the expectations placed on me. "And what happens if I don't want any of this?"

Iruka's expression grew more serious. "I understand. But... refusing isn't an option. The choice was made when you were selected. Now, it's about how you handle what comes next."

The carriage ride continued in silence after that, leaving me with my thoughts. When we finally arrived at the Nara compound, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. Being home, even under these circumstances, was a comfort. The familiar surroundings, the calm serenity of the clan's estate—it was a brief reprieve from the looming reality of what was to come.
