Shikamaru's POV – First Person

It had been four days since Iruka's last lesson, and today was the day we had all been waiting for. A messenger from the Forbidden City had arrived at the Nara Clan compound, bringing news of my rank and the date of my entrance into the Emperor's harem.

The atmosphere in the compound was tense as we gathered in the main hall. My family knelt beside me—my father, Shikaku, at the front, with my mother, Yoshino, and my other mother, Saeko, positioned respectfully behind him. My older brother, Shikaro, stood tall next to me, while my younger sisters, too young to fully grasp the magnitude of the moment, were quietly seated in the back. The air was thick with anticipation, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.

The messenger, dressed in the unmistakable garments of the Imperial court, stepped forward with an air of authority. His voice, clear and commanding, echoed in the hall.

"I bring word from the Forbidden City. Shikamaru Nara, you have been bestowed the rank of Consort by the Emperor, and in two weeks' time, you shall enter the Forbidden City to serve His Majesty."

My breath hitched. Consort. It was a higher rank than I had anticipated, a prestigious position within the harem. My family's heads remained bowed, but I could sense the ripple of approval among them. The messenger continued as servants entered, bearing gifts that had been sent from the Emperor to commemorate my new rank.

Among the gifts was an exquisite pair of jade bracelets. The moment I laid eyes on them, something stirred in me. They were stunning—delicate, yet strong, with the rich green hue that reminded me of the forests surrounding our clan's compound. I was captivated by their beauty and instantly fell in love with them. These bracelets, a symbol of my new status, would serve as a constant reminder of my place in the Emperor's world.

Once the formalities were over, the messenger bowed to my father, then to me, before leaving the hall. The silence that followed was thick, almost oppressive, until my father broke it.

"Congratulations, Your Highness," Shikaku said, his voice steady but carrying a note of pride.

Your Highness. Hearing the title from my father's lips made the situation feel more real. My family, too, followed suit, addressing me as 'Your Highness' from that moment on. It felt strange, as though my place within my own home had shifted.

Shikaro, my older brother, clapped me on the back, a rare smile crossing his usually serious face. "This is good for the Nara clan," he said, his tone approving. "With this rank, you have the opportunity to elevate our standing even more."

My father nodded in agreement. "Shikaro is right. You have the chance to climb even higher in the Emperor's favor, but remember, you must never fall in rank. Doing so could harm our family and our clan's reputation."

I bowed my head slightly in acknowledgment, the weight of their expectations pressing down on me. The thought of rising even further in the Emperor's harem wasn't particularly appealing, but I knew the stakes. My rank wasn't just about me—it was about the Nara clan, our honor, and our future.

Iruka, who had been standing silently at my side throughout the proceedings, stepped forward to address the family. "Shikamaru can bring two servants from the Nara compound to serve him in the Forbidden City," he explained. "This is standard for all Consorts."

Shikaku gave a slight nod. "You may choose any two you wish, Shikamaru," he said, his tone respectful now that my rank had been established. "Consider your choices carefully."

As the formalities concluded and the hall began to clear, I felt a sense of relief, but also a growing sense of dread. The gifts, the title, the privileges—it all solidified the reality that in two weeks, I would be entering the Forbidden City. There would be no turning back.

Later that night, as I sat in my room contemplating the jade bracelets that now adorned my wrists, a soft knock interrupted my thoughts. The door slid open to reveal my birth mother, Yoshino. She entered with the grace and authority that had always commanded respect, her gaze sharp as she approached me.

"Shikamaru," she began, sitting down beside me, "you know the importance of your new role. As a Consort, you have a unique opportunity. You must position yourself wisely in the harem, for this is not just about you—it is about the future of our clan."

Her eyes bore into mine, and I could feel the weight of her expectations pressing down on me once more. "Your older brother will one day lead the Nara clan, but you—if you can rise in the Emperor's favor, you can help ensure that our family remains in power, that our future is secure."

I nodded, though her words sat heavily on my shoulders. I knew she was right. This wasn't just about me—it never had been. After bidding me a good night, she left the room.

Moments later, another knock came. This time, it was Saeko, my father's second wife, who entered. She gave me a gentle smile, her demeanor softer than Yoshino's, as she sat down beside me.

"Shikamaru," she began, her tone kind but serious, "there is something I want you to understand. Being a Consort means you are the Emperor's second wife in rank, not his main wife, not the Empress. You will not have the same privileges. But that doesn't mean you cannot find your own happiness."

Her words were a stark contrast to Yoshino's, and I looked at her curiously as she continued.

"Your father and brother may want you to focus on giving the Emperor a Sire child, but I want you to know that Bearer children are just as valuable," she said softly. "They may not inherit the throne, but they can help secure alliances, and they will love you in a way the Emperor may never be able to."

Her words struck a chord in me. The idea of finding happiness, even in such a restrictive environment, was something I hadn't considered. Saeko gave me a warm smile, placing a hand gently on mine.

"Take every chance to become a mother, Shikamaru. Your child will be your greatest source of love and comfort in a world where you may find little of either."

She stood, leaving me with those parting words, and wished me a good night. As I lay in bed, staring at the jade bracelets glinting softly in the moonlight, I couldn't help but feel the gravity of what lay ahead. The path before me was filled with uncertainty, but for the first time, I found myself wondering if I could carve out a future of my own—one that was not just for the Nara clan, but for me.

Two weeks. Then, my life as I knew it would change forever.
