Shikamaru's POV – First Person

The last two weeks passed faster than I expected. Every moment had been spent preparing for today—the day I would leave the Nara Clan compound and take my place as Consort in the Emperor's harem. The weight of that title still felt foreign, as though it belonged to someone else.

Iruka, Renji, and Juro—my second chosen personal servant—oversees every detail. Juro, who my mother had recommended, was an older man with a calm, steady presence. His sharp eyes and efficiency made him invaluable, and together with Renji, they packed my belongings with care. Every item was scrutinized by Iruka, ensuring that nothing forbidden or inappropriate would be brought into the Forbidden City.

Despite the busyness of the preparations, I had made time to walk through the grounds of the Nara Clan compound. I committed every familiar path, every tree, every corner to memory. There was a heaviness in knowing that once I left, I would never return. The moment I stepped through the gates of the Forbidden City, my life outside would be over. The rules were clear: once inside, I would only leave under the Emperor's express wish, and even then, it would be rare. The chances of seeing the Nara compound again were almost nonexistent.

I spent quiet moments sitting beneath the shade of the large trees, watching the deer that roamed the compound, wishing for a fraction of their freedom. I let myself feel the weight of what was coming, trying to prepare my mind for the fact that everything I had known would soon be a distant memory.

Meals with my family had been different these past weeks. I now sat in a place of honor, my rank demanding more formality than before. My father and brother, both pleased with my new position, spoke often of politics and strategy. They reminded me of my responsibility to the clan, subtly urging me to use my influence to help elevate our standing. I listened, nodded, but kept my thoughts to myself.

And now, the day had come.

At the gates of the Nara Clan compound, my family gathered for one final farewell. According to tradition and law, they would not accompany me to the gates of the Forbidden City. This was a journey I had to make alone, accompanied only by my escorts.

"Take care of yourself, Shikamaru," my father said, his voice low and steady, though his eyes betrayed a rare softness. "Remember what we've spoken about."

"Of course, Father," I replied, bowing deeply.

My mother, stoic as always, placed a hand on my shoulder. "You're doing your duty. Be proud, and never bring shame to our name."

"I won't, Mother."

Then, my second mother, Yuna, stepped forward. Her gaze held warmth, and she smiled, though it didn't reach her eyes. "Shikamaru, don't forget what we talked about. Your happiness matters too."

I gave her a small nod, grateful for her words. While everyone else had focused on the Nara clan's position, she had been the only one to remind me that I had my own life to live.

Finally, my siblings gathered around. My older brother, Shikaro, gripped my shoulder firmly. "You'll do well. Just remember—this is only the beginning. There's always room to climb."

My younger sisters, both under ten years old, looked up at me with wide, curious eyes. They didn't fully understand the gravity of the situation, but they knew something was changing. "Goodbye, Shikamaru," they whispered in unison.

I gave them a small smile. "Goodbye."

And with that, it was time to leave. Iruka stood beside the carriage, along with Renji and Juro, and a small group of guards assigned to escort me to the Forbidden City. I turned to face the gates, taking one last look at the compound I had always known as home. The trees swayed gently in the wind, and the deer grazed quietly in the distance. I sighed, knowing it would be the last time I ever saw this place.

As I stepped into the carriage, I settled into the soft cushions, feeling the weight of my new reality pressing down on me. The journey to the Forbidden City was quiet, save for the sound of hooves on the dirt road. Iruka sat across from me, offering silent support. Renji and Juro rode in the next carriage, overseeing my belongings.

The gates of the Forbidden City loomed ahead, grand and imposing. My heart quickened. Once I crossed through them, my old life would be gone, and a new one would begin—one where the rules and expectations were far different from anything I had known.

As we arrived, I stepped out of the carriage, taking a moment to look back at the world beyond the gates. It felt like a line being drawn between my past and my future, and I knew, deep down, that crossing this threshold meant leaving behind more than just my home. It meant leaving behind a part of myself. The outside world, the Nara compound, the life I had lived until now—none of it would exist for me anymore.

The gates opened with a heavy creak, and I was escorted inside. Servants from the Forbidden City rushed forward, gathering my belongings to carry them to the palace that would be my new residence—Tenshikyu, or the Palace of Heavenly Rest. It was where I would live, and where I would entertain other members of the harem or the Emperor himself. As Consort, I would be the mistress of the palace, with a set of rooms that were exclusively mine.

The servants lined up to greet me, bowing low as they swore their loyalty to me. "We will serve you well, Your Highness," they said in unison. The title felt strange on their lips, but I knew I would have to get used to it.

Once inside the palace, I was led to my private chambers—elegant and spacious, far more luxurious than anything I had ever lived in before. The main room was where I would entertain, with rich tapestries hanging from the walls and cushions laid out in intricate patterns on the floor.

Iruka stood beside me, his eyes scanning the room before turning to face me. "This is where I leave you, Shikamaru," he said, his tone formal but filled with warmth. "My duty to you is done, but I wish you all the luck in the world. You'll need it."

I gave him a small smile, feeling a sense of loss at his departure. He had been a steady presence through this process, and now, I was truly on my own. "Thank you, Iruka, for everything."

He bowed deeply before stepping back. "Goodbye, Your Highness."

With that, he left, and I watched him go until he disappeared from sight.

Renji and Juro stayed with me, helping me settle into my new surroundings. The next few days would be taxing, filled with introductions and formalities, but for now, I allowed myself a moment of quiet. I ran my fingers over the jade bracelets I had received from the Emperor, their cool surface calming my nerves.

The Forbidden City would be my home now, and whatever awaited me here, I would face it head-on. There was no turning back.
