Shikamaru's POV
Three days had passed since Minato's visit, and the anticipation that had been building within me finally reached its peak. The Emperor had decided to visit me this evening. My servant Aki had come rushing in, her face lit with excitement as she delivered the news. The Emperor was coming—Naruto was coming to my palace.
I felt a surge of nervous energy. I had spent the last few days preparing, knowing that this moment was inevitable. Armed with the knowledge of Naruto's favorite meal, snack, and tea, I ensured that the dinner would be perfect. I ordered his favorite ramen to be made, along with a selection of snacks and his favored tea. The palace had been thoroughly cleaned, every corner sparkling in preparation for his arrival. I had also instructed the servants to prepare a side room, in case things didn't go as planned, and Naruto didn't take me to his bed.
As evening approached, the tension in my body increased. The final touches were being made to the inner dining area when I heard the sound of footsteps outside. Naruto had arrived.
I greeted him at the entrance of my palace, bowing low in respect. "Your Majesty, welcome to my humble palace. It is an honor to have you here."
Naruto gave me a warm smile, though there was a flicker of something behind his eyes—perhaps guilt? "I apologize for not visiting you sooner, Shikamaru. It wasn't my intention to make you wait this long."
I straightened, meeting his gaze. "I'm here for you whenever you wish, Your Majesty. Just like all the other members of your harem, my loyalty belongs to you."
Naruto's eyes softened, and he gave a small nod. I led him through the halls to the inner dining area, where the table was set with all of his favorites. The scent of freshly made ramen filled the air, along with the delicate aroma of the tea that I knew he enjoyed. Naruto's face lit up when he saw the spread before him, and it was in that moment that I felt a surge of confidence.
"Everything here is for you, Your Majesty. I hope it's to your liking."
We sat down to eat, and as we did, I found myself asking how he had been, genuinely curious about his well-being. In turn, Naruto asked me several questions—about life in the palace, my thoughts on the harem, and my role within it. I answered as best I could, always keeping in mind that my goal tonight wasn't just to please him with food, but to build a connection.
After dinner, I led him to a small theater hall within my palace. I had planned something special for him, something that I hoped would engage him in a way that would stand out from his other visits. In the center of the hall was a Go board, set up with only one stone of each color—white and black.
"I thought you might enjoy a game," I said, gesturing to the board.
Naruto's eyes lit up with curiosity, and I explained the game I had created. "It's a bit of a twist on the traditional game of Go. The rest of the stones are hidden around the hall, and we have to find them in order to place them on the board. You can have as many turns as you want, as long as you keep finding your color stone before I find mine."
Naruto grinned, clearly intrigued by the idea. "This sounds fun," he said, his excitement palpable.
He took the white stones, and I took the black. For the next hour, we played, searching the hall for the hidden stones and placing them on the board as we found them. Naruto was quick, finding more stones than I did, and by the time we decided to stop, he was clearly ahead.
We retreated to the entertainment room afterward, sitting comfortably as we continued to talk. Naruto leaned back, studying me carefully before asking the question I knew would come eventually.
"Shikamaru, why haven't you tried to promote yourself? You're intelligent, and your family is well-respected. Surely, you could make a bid for the title of Empress if you wanted to."
I met his gaze, choosing my words carefully. "If that's what you wanted, Your Majesty, I would try. But the truth is, I'm not seeking the title of Empress. My family might want me to rise in rank for the sake of their status. The Nara Clan has always served in strategizing for the Emperor, whether in war or peace. My father and brother would love to hold the title of the Emperor's Main Strategists. But personally…" I hesitated, my thoughts turning inward. "I never imagined being in the Emperor's harem. I always thought I'd marry someone who could join the Nara clan and help me raise the next generation."
Naruto listened intently, his expression thoughtful.
I took a deep breath, recalling my second mother's advice. "Now that I am part of your harem, Your Majesty, I do hope to at least follow her words. To have a child, to love them with all my heart. I know that perhaps true love between us might never come, but if I can have children, I know I will be able to love them, and they will love me back."
Naruto's eyes softened, a smile tugging at his lips. "You're the first one in my harem to say you want a child for the sake of having a child, not just to give me an heir."
I smiled in return, the weight in my chest lightening. "I'd be happy to give you an heir, but any child, Sire or Bearer, would bring me joy."
The night had grown late, and I could feel the tiredness beginning to settle in. "It's late, Your Majesty," I said softly. "I've had a side chamber prepared for you, unless…" I paused, meeting his eyes. "Unless you'd prefer to join me."
Naruto's gaze lingered on mine, and in that moment, I knew. He reached for me, his smile warm and inviting.
That night, Naruto took me to his bed, the first of his harem to do so. As dawn broke the next day, I awoke with a sense of calm and purpose. Later that morning, a decree was sent out to the entire palace: Shikamaru Nara had been raised to the rank of Noble Consort.
I wasn't just a piece in the game anymore—I had made my move.
