Author's note: This is how I thought the end of season 6 should have gone. Most of this does not follow canon. I always thought Catherine should have been there.
This is the first story of 17 that I have written. All are McRoll because I hate the way the show screwed up their story. I watched my first episode in March 2022. I wrote these stories mostly to give Steve & Catherine the story I wanted to see.

As I said in my BIO, I loved Danny in the earlier season but didn't like how they changed him after season four. Lynn is my favorite bad person, but only because she came across as if she had made Steve move on from Catherine. She was so smug when she met Catherine.
I am not a writer and the first time I wrote anything.

Chapter 1
Tripler Medical Center
May 2016
Day 2 after surgery!
All Steve could remember was that he and Danny were flying a plane posing as drug dealers and their cover was blown. They were attacked in the air by men with machine guns. He was now in the hospital, fighting for his life. He was unconscious to everyone, but he was trying to remember what happened in his mind. The machine behind him began to start beeping louder; his blood pressure was rising, and his heart rate. The nurse came in and gave him another sedative to calm him down. If that didn't work, they would have to put him in an induced coma. The liver transplant had gone well. Thanks to his partner Danny, who was a match and was recovering in his room. Steve's mind was returning to the one person he constantly thought about his beautiful Lieutenant. Except she was not his anymore and was somewhere working for the bastard CIA.
He remembers how happy he was when she came back after a year. He still loved her and would finally ask her to marry him. She left before he had a chance. Maybe he waited too long, or she didn't love him anymore. He was broken without her. He remembers Danny, Lou, and his friends pushing him to date someone. Saying he needs to move on. He got tired of them looking at him with pity. One thing he hates most is for someone to see him as pitiful. That is not the image of Commander Steven John McGarrett, a badass and all-around tough guy. Only Catherine saw his soft side and knew all his fears. He knows now he made mistakes with her. He has taken her for granted. He was treating her like a team member instead of his girlfriend. He realizes that now. She has done and sacrifice so much for him. What has he done for her? For months he blamed her and was pissed all the time. So he finally agreed to date this girl, Lynn, mostly to get the animals off his back. He knew from the first date he could never love her. She was okay, not bad looking, but not his Catherine. Who on their first date takes selfies to post on social media? That was not Steve's thing to be put on public display. He went along with it and tried to play nice. All the time he was with her, he thought this should be Catherine with him. He needs to shake it off; she is gone and never returning. He goes in to fake McGarrett. Something he never thought he would do. Catherine leaving him again had changed him, and he was indeed broken. He was flirting with many women; he had never done it in the past, maybe a little here and there. It was just a joke to him because back then, it was only his lieutenant that he needed. Now, he takes it further and sometimes ends up sleeping with them, later losing their number. It was to take over the pain he was feeling in his heart, but it didn't work. She was still in his head and heart. He truly hoped Danny was going to be okay.
In the waiting room, everyone was there Kono, Chin, Lou, Jerry, Max, Gracie, and Mary. They were all so worried about Steve. Mary left Joan at a friend's house because she didn't want her to see her Uncle Steve hooked up to all the machines. No one could reach Joe or Doris, but left them a message.
-"Do we call Catherine ?" Kono finally asked.
-"I don't know" Chin said. "She is probably on a mission, and Steve is dating Lynn".
-"I know, but he would still want Cath to know", she replied.
-"You are probably right but wait awhile longer to see if he regains consciousness. He will be pissed if he knows we contact her and she came back because of pity".
-"You are right" said Kono.
The doctor came out and asked the Commander's family to come forth. He was aware they were Ohana.
-"Commander McGarrett is still unconscious, but the surgery went well, and he should be awake shortly. Mr. Williams is awake and yelling loudly for his family", said the doctor with a small smile.
-"That Danny", everyone said.
-" You can see Danny, and I will let you know when you can see the Commander" he announced.
They all head to see Danny, he is yelling loudly he has to see Steve now! Gracie runs over and hugs him.
-"Danno, I am so happy you are alive. Uncle Steve is going to be okay, thank to you" she said.
-"Hey Monkey, I love you. Hey guys".
-"Hi Danny, we see you are doing just fine and driving everyone crazy", said Kono, and everyone laughed.
-"Hey, I am just recovering from giving Steve part of my liver. Be nice to me", and he pout a little.
-"Yeah, man, we are happy you both are going to be okay", Chin said.
-" Are you sure Steve is going to be OK? There was a lot of blood" Danny began to get worry.
-"The Dr. said he should be waking up any minute" Kono assured.
-"I will call Mom so she can let Charlie know. He was worried about you" Grace announced.
-" Okay, monkey, tell him I love him" Danny asked to his beloved daughter.
-"We were wondering if we should contact Catherine", said Kono.
-"Why would you do that?". Danny tried to raise his arms, but due to the intravenous and other machines connecting to him, he couldn't. "You know she left him twice and broke his heart. So NO, do not call her he yelled. Steve is just starting to move on and is dating Lynn—that is who you should call and who he will want to see".
-" Okay, please don't get yourself all worked up, even though I think you're wrong", said Kono.
-"I agree with Danny; he likes Lynn and is happy with her", Lou said .
-"We are going to let you get some rest and will come back when Steve awakes to let you know how he is doing", announced Chin and the other nodded.
-"Can someone get the nurse to bring me some decent food besides pineapple Jello?", Danny made a face.
-"That is all you can have now, per the doctor", said Chin.
-"Get some rest, Danny", said Lou, and they left the room.
-In the hallway, Kono was talking to Chin.
-"I don't care what Lou and Danny are saying ; I know Steve. He is unhappy with Lynn and is just going through the motions for us. I have seen him happy with Catherine; it is nothing like when her name comes up".
-" You're right, but I didn't want to get into it with Danny because he is recovering and needs to remain calm".
-"I will see if I can find a way to let her know and leave it up to her if she wants to come. She should know. What they had is the real deal, and regardless of her reason for leaving, you don't get over someone you love that soon. She is still our Sistas, and I owe her big time for helping find Adam. She did text me when she first left and the only thing she said about leaving was that she didn't have a choice, and that was all she could say. I guess I ask Joe when he calls back", Kono announced.
-"Okay, let me know if you find her, and I meet you in the waiting room", said Chin.
In the meantime, Lou took it upon himself to call Lynn and tell her. She was thrilled that someone from his team liked her besides Danny. Steve has never introduced her to anyone on his Team. He always had some excuse. She had been working hard to get him to let her in, but he was still holding back. She thought when she found the engagement ring and threw it at him, he was into her and immediately made it up to her by taking her to a private dining fancy dinner and deleting his ex-contact. What she could tell from Danny and Melissa was that he was over her and would never go back to her for lying and leaving him again. She hoped they would marry since she knew he was the marrying kind and a one-woman man. Danny told Melissa that Lynn needs to be sweet and kind and never question him. The total opposite of Catherine. That is what she had been doing, playing it beautifully. Never question him about anything. Just being there when he was drunk and sad. He called her Cath several times in bed, but she let it pass. She just thought he needed time, and she was in his bed. The head of five- o, Commander and fear by all and a Greek God. She did notice he never showed any emotions. It was wham bam, thank you, ma'am. No cuddling, no foreplay, and more like pecks than kissing. It was enough for her now because once she got the ring on her finger, she would change all of this. Ellie said he was a good man, so she needed to do whatever she could to hold on to him. She told Lou she would be there shortly. He must pull through; this would be another chance to show him how much she is there for him. She would nurse him back to health and be by his side for anything he needs. Her, not his Ex. So, she thought.
Kono finally got a call back from Joe, who was working as a private contractor but said he would get there as soon as possible. He would track down Catherine and arrange for her to come. He heard they had broken up but believed they belonged together like he did from day one. He hoped they would find their way back to one another. If two kids deserve happiness, it is them. Joe will try to do his part by getting Catherine back to Steve. Joe called some of his contacts & was able to locate Catherine. She was in between missions and had just arrived at Langley in VA. He called her Boss, who happens to be a good friend.
-" Hey Jim, how are you?" Joe greeted the guy he used to know when they were together in the Navy SEALS.
"It's good to hear from you, Joe", smiled the old man.
-"I need a huge favor, man. You have a CIA officer by the name of Catherine Rollins."
-" Rollins, yeah, she's the best officer I have. I wish I had a thousand more of her. She can be ruthless when needed. Why, are you asking that?"
-"Please put her on a plane to Oahu as soon as possible, this is very important".
-"Why?" asked the officer, surprised.
-"Someone close to her is hurt, and she needs to be there".
-"Why don't you call and tell her?"
-"She is stubborn, and I don't have time to convince her to get on a plane".
-"Yeah, you are right about that", Jim laughed.
-" Once she was on the plane, I met her when it landed" announced Joe.
-"I get her on the plane, Joe, but I will need her back in two weeks for another crucial mission".
-"Thanks, Jim".
He was leaving to get on the next hop to O'ahu.
Catherine's Boss called her and announced to the lieutenant she had to be on the next plane to Honolulu. When she heard the destination, she starts to freak out. She starts to ask her boss why but he didn't tell her the reason. She finished to accept and said she will be ready. She is wondering of all the places why Oahu." Oh my God, she thought, I'm probably going to run into Steve. Everyone hates me, even though Kono said they didn't". She knows deep down they both loved each other. They didn't say the words, but their actions did. She felt so happy when he told her he loved her, but she was halfway around the world. She was feeling so lost at that time, Billy dying, and they had gotten complacent. Everything was always with the team, and she never had alone time, and she felt like she was no longer important to him. Danny barged in any time he felt like it. She knows how Danny was, but she felt Steve should have put his foot down when she always stayed there. She starts crying on the plane. "How am I going to do this? To be in the same town and not see him", she thought, really sad. She had been overseas and hadn't heard anything about the accident.
Joe called her boss back and asked him to ensure she couldn't listen to any news or get Wi-Fi on the flight. Joe's flight got in before hers. He was waiting for her at Pearl Hickman Airfield. Her boss still hadn't called her to let her know her assignment. Just a text of the hotel where she would be staying. She thought that was odd. When she got off the plane, she was shocked to see Joe. Joe hugged her.
-"Hello young lady", he said.
-"What, what are you doing here?"
He takes her bags.
-"Listen, Catherine, there is something you need to know. Steve been hurt".
-"No, no, please tell me he's alive" she was terrified. She couldn't lose him.
-"He is sweetheart. I tell you more in the car on the way to see him. He is at Tripler" he announced.
She got in the car, and then it darn on her.
-"You had my boss send me here," she realized.
-"Yes, because I didn't have time to convince you to come. You're too stubborn", they both smiled.
-"What happened, Joe?" she asked.
-"Steve and Danny were working undercover, flying a plane for a drug dealer to catch him. They were discovered and shot down by the drug dealer. Steve took all the hits, and Danny had to land the plane" he told the story.
-"Danny!" she exclaimed, really surprised because she couldn't imagine Danny doing that.
-"Yeah, he landed it on a beach" Joe smiled.
-"I don't believe it" she said.
-"Steve's liver was destroyed and needs a replacement as soon as possible".
Catherine's face is in shock.
-"Danny gave him part of his, and Steve is now recovering".
-"So far, so good. What about Danny?"
-"He is going to be okay and is awake. Steve is in and out of consciousness, but the doctor is pleased about his recovery".
Catherine started crying.
-"He is going to be fine, sweetheart. You know it is going to take a lot more than a damaged liver to bring his ass down".
She smiled a little.
-" Joe, I don't know if you heard, but we broke up." She sniffled.
-"I heard but didn't know what happened, but if any two people loved each other from day one and denied it when the whole Navy knew you were lying. I know Steve and he will want to see you."
She snipple and said I wish it were true.
-"Why did you join the CIA? I can't tell you, so don't ask me about it. I mean it, Joe".
Joe could tell she was hiding something, but he also knew she wouldn't divulge, but he had his way of finding out.
-"Okay, I'll drop it. It is a couple of hours before visiting hours. I drop you off at the hotel & come back and get you".
-"I do need a shower, but I am still not sure that seeing Steve is the best idea", she said.
-" Listen here, young lady, you and Steve were friends long before you got involved. I know he wants to see you".
-"Okay, Joe, you're right", she said.
Joe let her check-in and go up to her room. Joe took the time to call some of his contacts in the CIA and get the information he was looking for. I knew it, and now I know how to get these two stubborn people back together.
