Chapter 1: Moms in the Hospital…for Different Reasons

November 19, 2018 – Gaffney Medical Center, Chicago
It's been one hell of a week. One where Matthew Casey has tried his best to reach his sister, but which he's yet to do so. The reason? He had no idea. All he knew, was that he finally got through to her; though, not the way he wished he had to do it. The way he had to do it? He had to go through his ex-brother-in-law Jim Jordan. And while they had their differences, he just knew that…if Jim called her and told her that she needed to come to the hospital…then she would do so in an instant as she would think it was about their daughter. But as Christie Casey walked into the emergency room, she was confused when she saw her brother there, rather than her ex-husband. "Matt? What are you doing here? God, did Jim really call you too so that you could protect him from me?" Matt snickered as his sister asked him that question, as he most certainly would never do that. "Me? Protect that asshole? Not a chance. If anything, I was the reason why he called you to get here in the hospital in the first place." Christie was confused as Matt said that.

After all, why would he be the one to tell her that she needed to come to the hospital...that was, unless he responded to the scene where her daughter got hurt. "Shit, you were the one that responded to the scene. What did Violet do?" Christie said, while also hugging her brother and kissing his cheek. "Oh, she's not the one in the hospital." Christie was confused as she heard her brother say that. "What are you talking about? If Violet isn't in the hospital, then why am I here?" Matt sighed. "Well, it's due to the fact that I can't seem to reach you." Christie groaned. "Why do you think that is, Matt? You've been calling me constantly since Gabby left. I get you're grieving your marriage, and I know that this is a lot for you to handle…but, I don't need to hear it; not when I myself went through a divorce." Matt sighed as Christie said that, which was when his sister noticed that he had a back over his shoulder. "Wait, why do you have a bag over your shoulder? Wait, were you in the hospital? Is that why I'm here? Do you need a ride home?"

Matt sighed as Christie asked him that question, as that wasn't the reason why she was here. "No. If anything, you need to go home and get your things to stay for a bit." Christie was confused. "What are you talking about?" Matt sighed as Christie asked him that question, only to reveal the reason why he's been calling her repeatedly for the past week. "Mom's here." And the moment her brother told her that their mother was here in the hospital, she got concerned. "What? Why didn't you tell me?" Matt looked at his sister as she told him, that, as he hasn't been able to reach her. "You did not just ask me that question, when I haven't been able to reach you. I've been calling you every 2-3 hours every day for the past week. You do not get to say that, when I've been trying my best to get in touch with you. You know that." Christie agreed with her brother, as she knew that was the truth; so, she let out a sigh in order to calm down. "What's going on? And why is she in the hospital?" Matt sighed. "She got in a car accident last week."

And the moment Matt mentioned that their mother, Nancy Casey, got into a car accident last week; well, Christie got worried. "Oh god. Is she okay?" Matt shook his head. "Well, she's still here in the hospital; so, I think that means that she's not okay yet. If anything, we both know that's not a good sign." Christie agreed with her brother. "Hold on a second. Is she…" Matt agreed with his sister. "Yes, she's still with us; it's why I've been here for the past week, remember?" Realizing that, Christie let out a sigh of relief. "Thank god." Matt agreed with his sister. "I can only imagine how relieved you are. Mom told me that you guys are trying to fix your relationship." Christie agreed with her brother, as they most certainly were trying to fix their relationship. "It's long overdue." Matt agreed with his sister, as it most certainly was. "I showed her some pictures of Violet, just to let you know. She's been asking about her grandchildren. But listen…I really need a favor." Christie looked at her brother. "And what might that be?" Matt sighed as he looked at his sister.

In fact, it was why she was here in the first place. "It's why you're here. Listen, I get you have a busy job. And I know that the end of the year is always a bad time." Christie agreed with her brother, while also guessing where this was headed. "But…I've been here for the past week, after having discovered her on shift. I've barely slept…and any sleep that I did get, it was in a hospital chair. So, my back is fucked, and I need to go home for a bit. I need to lay down in my own bed for a while." Christie agreed with her brother as he said that, as she could understand that. "Yeah, I get that." Matt agreed with his sister. "Listen, I get you aren't there with mom yet. But, if you can just do me a solid and be here for a couple nights; then, I'll come back. I just…I need to get some things in order. I need to rearrange my place." Christie was confused when Matt said that. "Why?" Matt snickered. "Where do you think mom's going to live when she gets out of the hospital? Someone needs to take her to rehab, and I have the better job and flexibility to do so."

Christie agreed, as that made sense: he could take care of their mother much easier than she could. "Though, you can always come over when I'm at work to take care of her. Right now, I just need to get things settled." Christie shook her head. "No, I can take care of her, Matt. I have the bigger place, anyways." Matt was surprised to her his sister say that. "We'll talk about that with her doctors, okay?" Christie sighed. "Hey, I'm here now. This isn't all on you. I'm sorry it took me so long to get here, but I need to help out. You took her in when she was on probation, so I can help out now. It'll help me work on my relationship with her." Matt sighed. "Listen, I'm in no mood to fight right now, as I'm exhausted. I need rest. Just, don't make any final decisions on that without me. Christie, you know for a fact that you have a temper." Christie was about to argue with her brother, until he gave her a look that made her realize that was the truth. "So, we both know that we need to listen to the doctors and our mother's preference."

Agreeing with her brother once more, Christie knew that was the truth. "And the last thing we want, is for her to have any problems with this. Christie, I've seen women get hurt in more ways than others. I've responded to enough car accidents to know that this is going to be hard on her. So, the last thing I need is for you to take her in, then abandon her when you get frustrated. Christie, she's not young like us. She's going to need months of rehab, which may be longer than you're willing to take care of our mother." Christie sighed, as she knew that was the truth. "God, you're going politician on me again." Matt smiled. "Hey, I know all about that. God, you have no idea how hard it was to associate with my in-laws." Christie agreed with her brother. "Speaking of which, how's the divorce going? Or, is there going to be a divorce?" Matt sighed, as he wasn't sure anymore. "She's been quiet again recently, so I'm not sure. I'm going to get in touch with a lawyer…hell, I may even go down there to see her." Christie looked at her brother.

Did he really just say that, when their mother needs him here? "Now?" And the moment Christie said that, Matt realized that wasn't a good idea. "Right, not a good idea. Sorry." Christie agreed with her brother, which was when they were approached by Natalie Manning (who was just coming into work). "Matt? You leaving?" Turning his head, Matt smiled as he looked at his long-time friend. The friend he knew since he was with Hallie. "Yeah, I am. Oh, Natalie. You remember my sister, right?" Turning around, Christie looked at Natalie; after which, she turned her head to look at Matt. "Seriously? Another doctor? Wait, you aren't even divorced yet." Matt just looked at Christie as she said that. "Christie…this was Hallie's old roommate in college. Remember? Natalie Manning?" Christie then got nervous, as she remembered her. "Oh…and I'm married, you idiot." Christie snickered. "Right…" Matt agreed. "Unlike your ex, I don't cheat on my wife while we're still married." Natalie smiled. "So, you guys agreed to give you marriage a second chance?"

Matt was confused. "No, still getting divorced." Natalie was perplexed. "Well, that's not what Gabby said when she called me yesterday to set up her appointment this morning. She said that she wanted a consult today. It's why I'm here an hour before my shift. She said something about being pregnant with twins?" And the moment Natalie told him that, Matt was shocked. "Sorry, what? Did you just say that Gabby is pregnant?" And as if it was faith, it turned out that Gabby came into the ED the moment Matt said those words…only to get nervous as she looked at her husband and his sister. "Matt." Turning around when he heard Gabby's voice, Matt was surprised. "Gabby?" And the moment they looked at each other, Matt looked down to see her place her hand on her stomach. And the moment she did that, he got nervous due to the fact that this wasn't what he expected to hear: his wife was pregnant with twins? "What?" Natalie then turned to look at Gabby. "Let me guess, he didn't know?" Gabby sighed and shook her head, as he didn't know.

She decided to hug her sister-in-law prior to hugging her husband, due to the fact that she was worried over what he was going to say. "What are you doing here? Wait, are you okay? Matt, why are you here?" Christie smiled. "He's okay. He isn't hurt." Matt agreed with his sister. After which, he decided to ask his wife why she was here; well, more like asking her to give him confirmation about what he just heard her say. "You're pregnant with twins?" Gabby sighed as she walked up to Matt, well aware that this is the last thing he wanted to hear. "Matt, please. Don't make a scene." Matt took a breath as Gabby told him that, prior to turning his head to look at his sister. After which, he walked up to Gabby and proceeded to hug her; after all, he was unsure of what to say right now. He didn't know what he could or did want to say, as he didn't want to hurt Gabby. "When did you get in town?" Gabby sighed. "Yesterday. Wait, why aren't you at the firehouse leaving shift?" Matt sighed as he looked at his sister, as he knew that he needed to tell his wife.

So, he did just that: he told Gabby why he was here at the hospital, rather than at the firehouse leaving shift. "Our mom was in a car accident last week at the mall. I've been here for the past week taking care of her, but my sister is going to take over now. I was going to come home. But now, you're here. So…." Gabby agreed with Matt and sighed. "Listen, Matt. Can we talk about this another time? I'm sorry. I just…god, this isn't how I wanted to tell you." Matt agreed with his wife, as he understood. "How did you get here? You don't have a car." Walking in, Antonio snickered. "That would be me." Looking at his brother-in-law, Matt agreed. "Oh. Uhm…" That's when Antonio realized something. "What are you doing here? You weren't home for the past couple days since we got here." Matt sighed as he looked at Antonio. "My mom was in a car accident last week at the mall." And as Antonio heard Matt say that, he was shocked. "Shit. I'm sorry man." Matt agreed. "I've been here for the past week with her. That's why I wasn't home."

Gabby agreed with Matt. "Uhm…" Matt agreed with his wife. "Though, I'm coming home today. So, we'll have a chance to talk." Gabby agreed with her husband. "Uhm…I have an appointment with Natalie. I want to go through the checks and stuff. I want to make sure that…" Matt agreed with his wife. "IUP?" Gabby agreed with her husband. "Yeah. I…god, can we talk another time?" Matt agreed with his wife. "Listen, I'll be right into the exam room with you. I promise. I just need to talk to my sister for a minute. Maybe you can wait for me to start?" Gabby agreed with her husband, as she could do that for him. "I can do that." Matt agreed with his wife, only to step close to her and wrap his arms around her; after which, he pressed his lips to her forehead and whispered to her."Listen, take a breath and relax. I'll be right in, and we can talk."Gabby agreed with Matt as she looked up at him. "Matt, I never intended for this to happen. You need to know that." Matt agreed with his wife, as he knew that. "I know. Just take a breath and I'll be right there." Gabby agreed.

After which, she walked away so that she could go to her appointment; meanwhile, Matt looked at his brother-in-law and sighed. After all, he could see how worried he was about all of this. Though, he didn't know whether it was about whether he would support Gabby, or whether it was about how things would go with him and Gabby. "Antonio, I hope you know that I have every intention of supporting Gabby through this. That's not something you need to worry about." Antonio agreed with his brother-in-law, glad that was the case. "I'm sorry that I even had any doubts." Matt sighed. "Did she tell you everything, by any chance?" Antonio agreed. "Yeah, she told me about her aneurysm." Matt nodded, glad that was the case. "Listen, not that I need to explain things to you, but…" Matt sighed. "I went about it the wrong way, I know that. And I've been beating myself up for saying what I said for months. I don't know if Gabby told you or not…" Antonio then decided to tell Matt something. "She did. She told me what you said." Matt agreed with Antonio.

So, he could only hope that he didn't take it out on him. "Antonio. Listen. I know that we'll probably have to talk about this another time. But, can you please give me a break right now? My mom has been in the hospital for a week after a car accident, and she's still here. Hell, I'm still worried about her and whether she'll truly survive." Christie looked at her brother as he said that, only to have Matt explain. "Christie, she hasn't been getting out as much. They did a bone scan, and they're not as strong as they want them to be. So, that's something we need to worry about. She needs rest right now." Christie agreed with her brother. "Ok. I understand." Matt nodded as he turned to look at Antonio. "Listen, give me a minute to finish talking to my sister, then I'll talk to you." Antonio agreed. Meanwhile, Matt looked at his sister. "Ok. Quick updates. Mom is on bedrest, which is why I'm here. She can't move. The nurses are taking care of her, but she still needs help as everything is sore." Christie agreed with her brother, as she got that.

Meanwhile, Matt just continued. "I took notes over the past week, as I can guarantee you that mom will not remember anything. There's a notebook in the side table next to the bed they have in there for me. I asked them to leave it, as I knew you'd want it. But yes, there's a notebook in the side drawer. It has all the information we have so far, along with the information for the detective." Matt then looked at Antonio. "Detective Spadina?" Antonio smiled. "Martin Spadina. Oh, he's a good detective. He does a thorough investigation, and he'll make sure that he does a good job. I'll give him a call and let him know that she's my sister's mother-in-law. He does get a lot of cases, but he owes me a favor for having hid his affair with his ex-wife." Matt snickered as Antonio said that. "So, you'll ask him to make sure he really investigates my mother's case?" Antonio agreed. "I promise, I'll make sure that I do that. Just as long as you make sure to take care of my sister." Matt sighed as he turned to look at Christie. After all, this was between them.

So, he decided to ask his sister if they could have a minute. "Christie, I'll give Antonio your number and he can call you with some information about the investigation, okay? Right now, this is private with regards to my wife." Christie agreed with her brother, as she could understand that; so, she got close to him and hugged him. After which, she kissed his cheek. "Listen, if you have any questions about any of this…give me a call. We'll figure this out as a team. I've already spoken to the CFD and told them that my mom was in an accident, so I may be able to make a claim on my insurance if she needs help. I have ideas in my head. I may try and go to the courts to get her under a temporary conservatorship, because she told me some things. Her boyfriend is controlling like dad." Christie got nervous when she heard her brother say that. "God, why did mom need to find someone like him?" Matt agreed with Christie. "You know, I'm, glad we spoke about everything this summer. It's nice to know you finally understand why I don't like our father."

Christie agreed with her brother. "Honestly, it was something we should've done years earlier. God, Matt. What you had to go through with dad was horrible, and I'm sorry that you had to deal with that. I promise, we're good." Matt agreed with his sister. "Now, you need to make it up to mom. We're going to need to be there for her, as the last thing we need is to let her ex back into her life. So, uhm…I may do the conservatorship. Maybe we can talk after I take everything into consideration." Christie agreed. "I know, you have a lot to think about now that Gabby's home." Matt agreed. "Yes. Now, I'll be back Thursday for Thanksgiving. I want Violet here with us." Christie agreed with her brother once more and smiled, only to hug him. "Of course. See you later. Go be with your wife." Matt agreed and smiled. "Room 705. Ask Natalie for directions." Christie agreed with her brother, only to walk away so that she could go find her mother. Meanwhile, Matt looked at Antonio. "I can see that you're worried about all of this." Antonio sighed, as he was.

Of course, he was worried for his sister. How could he not be worried about her. "Matt, how can I not be worried about my sister? I get that you love her and everything, but I also know that you didn't want this." Matt sighed and agreed, as he could understand why he was worried. "And I know that. I just…" Matt sighed. "Antonio, may I remind you that Gabby isn't the first woman I thought I was going to marry?" And the moment Matt said that, he started to understand. "Oh." Matt agreed with Antonio. "Listen, I don't expect you to understand that all right away. However, it is part of my life. It's something I always have in the back of my mind: the fact that Gabby isn't my first. And sure, I regret that; but, it's still true. I'm worried to lose Gabby, because it's the last thing I want. I don't want to lose my wife, when I love her more than anything in the entire world." Antonio agreed, as he understood that. "I get that." Matt smiled as he agreed with Antonio, glad that he understood the situation which he was in right now. "I'm glad." Antonio smiled.

After which, he proceeded to hug him as he knew that was what he needed right now. "Listen, I promise to take it easy on you right now. You have a lot going on, and you just need to concentrate on Gabby and your mom. But for now, just go see your wife and check on her. Celebrate the fact that she's pregnant." Matt sighed as he looked at Antonio. "At least, I hope she's pregnant. This is just that scan." Antonio then realized what he was talking about. "You mean, the scan that you guys had the last time?" Matt agreed with his brother-in-law, as that was precisely the scan he was talking about: the one to make sure that it's IUP. "I think that's the real reason why she came here right away. She may have learned that she was having twins in Puerto Rico, but she wanted to make sure that she truly was pregnant here in Chicago." Antonio agreed, as that was probably what his sister was doing right now. "I have that same feeling. I only hope that she is, as I can only imagine how much she wants this." Matt agreed, as he felt the same way.

Plus, he just needs good news right now. "Plus, I want to have some good news right now. After my mom's car crash, I need some. Sure, Gabby's home, but it'll be nice if she's pregnant. I mean, scary, but nice." Antonio agreed with Matt. "Just make it up to her." Matt sighed, as he already knew precisely what Antonio was talking about: the way he spoke to his wife. The way he made her feel horrible, which is the last thing he ever wanted to do. He didn't want to make her feel that way, especially not when he loves her more than anything in the entire world. "I promise, that's something I have every intention of doing now that she's home. But first, I need to double check whether she's even pregnant." Antonio agreed with Matt and smiled. "She said she's pregnant with twins, right?" Matt agreed. "Yeah. So, that's a lot to figure out." Antonio agreed with Matt. "Take some time with her." Matt snickered. "I already took the next couple months off to help with my mom. So, I will do just that. I promise, Antonio." Matt said, prior to walking away to his wife.

There was no need for him to ask how she was doing right now, as he already knew the moment he walked into her hospital room: she was worried and scared about everything, as she knew how much her husband didn't want this…and just how risky all of this was. After all, the doctor told them just a couple months ago that she could die while being pregnant with just one baby; but for her to be pregnant with two babies, that was even riskier. She already knew that, and she worried that Matt wouldn't want to go through with this. But now, as he walked into the room she was in, Gabby took a breath and looked at her husband. "Tell me now. Am I having surgery today?" Looking at his wife as she asked him that question, Matt already knew precisely what she was asking him: whether he was going to force her to get an abortion now that he knew she was pregnant. "Hey, let's not even think that way, babe." Gabby looked at Matt as he told her that. "Matt, we both know this isn't what you want." Matt agreed, as he knew that was true.

This wasn't what he wanted, due to the fact that he was worried for her and her safety. He didn't know how this would all work out, due to the fact that this was a risk he wasn't sure whether he thought he'd ever want to take. But now, Gabby is home, and he just has so much on his mind. "Gabby, do we really need to think this way right now? You're home right now, and that's all that should matter. Sure, this isn't what I expected to hear today. But, we'll figure it out. Isn't that what I told you when we fantasized about having twins at the doctor earlier this year." Looking into Matt's eyes as he said that, Gabby took a breath due to the fact that she was still worried. Sure, she felt a bit more reassured over the fact that he seemed to be open to this, yet she was also worried that he wouldn't support her. "Matt, I'm scared. I need you right now…I don't need you to yell at me and make me feel horrible for letting this happen. If you can't do that for me…" Shaking his head, Matt placed his hand on her neck and press his lips to her forehead.

After all, that was the last thing he wanted her to worry about: whether he wouldn't support her. "Gabby, of course, I'm going to support you. I love you, and that's what I should've done in May. I should've just supported you, rather than yell at you the way I did. Did you get the letter I slipped into your bag when you left?" Gabby nodded, as she did read the letter that he wrote to her before she left. "Yeah I did." Matt smiled as Gabby told him that, prior to walking over to the chair they had in here. Upon doing so, he set his bag down and smiled as he looked at the woman he loves. "Gabby, I regret everything I said that day. I love you more than anything, and that's all that matters at the end of the day. I mean that from the bottom of my heart, and I will always mean that. You're my world, the love of my life, and I want to be here for you. You need me right now, and I can already see just how truly scared you are right now." Gabby agreed with Matt, as she was scared right now…not just for her life, but for their marriage.

She was worried that they wouldn't make it. "Matt, I'm not just worried about this. I'm also worried about our marriage. I want you, Matt. I want to be your wife. I came back, because I want to do this together. You're my husband and the father of our children, so you deserve to be part of this." Moving his hand to the side of Gabby's face, Matt agreed with the love of his life. Of course, he deserves to be a part of this; though, he would've understood if she felt different. He knows that he hurt her months ago, so he wouldn't blame her one bit for having wanted to keep this a secret from him. He wouldn't blame her if she wanted to be pregnant alone, because he knew just how much she wanted this. "Baby, I know how much you want this. So, I wouldn't blame you one bit if you decided that you wanted to do this alone because of how much you want this. But, if you let me be a part of it, then I'll make it up to you and make sure that you have the best pregnancy in the entire world." Gabby agreed with her husband and smiled, as she wanted that.

She wanted him to be a part of the pregnancy, as she loves him more than anything. "Good, because I want nothing more than to have you be a part of the pregnancy. I mean that from the bottom of my heart." Matt agreed and smiled, as he already knew that was the truth. "I know that, babe. Listen, how about we take it easy and concentrate on the task at hand. Then, we can go home, lay down in bed, and we can talk about before I take a nap." Gabby agreed with Matt and smiled, only to watch him step close to her and kiss her softly. "That sounds perfect, especially since you're going to hold me and your kids in your arms." Matt agreed and smiled as he proceeded to press his lips to her forehead, giving her the reassurance that she needs that he's here for her; yet, at the same time, worrying over just how bad this could get. After all, this is still quite risky. And if something goes wrong, then he could lose the woman he loves forever. Though, now that he's been blessed with this second chance with her, he refuses to blow it like he did last time.

The result was precisely what they wanted: their children were both IUP and viable, which is the reason behind the smiles which they had plastered all over their faces as they left the hospital this morning. However, as Matt pulled out of the driveway to take his wife home, Matt could just tell that there was something wrong; after all, she should be happy right now, as this was everything she's ever wanted: she was pregnant with their children, and he was going to support her. "Hey, what's wrong babe? Something's on your mind, I can see it." Gabby sighed as she turned her head to look at the man she loves. "I just don't want anything to go wrong with the pregnancy. We've wanted this for the longest time, so I'm just a bit worried about it all. Yes, I believe that I can do it, but…" Matt shook his head, as he understood; though, he also had an idea what was going on: she was thinking about what he said to her. "Are you thinking about what I said to you a couple months ago too?" Gabby sighed, as she didn't WANT to think about those words.

But, she was thinking about them, as she tried to reconcile his support for her now with what he said back then. Just a couple months ago, he was completely against this. But now, he was open to the idea of them being pregnant. Sure, she loves that fact. She loves that he's now open to her being pregnant, while also promising to assist her while she's pregnant…yet, she couldn't help but wonder when the other shoe was going to drop. "I'm just worried that you're going to reach a breaking point, where you decide to stop supporting me." Matt sighed, as he could understand why she thought that; so, he knew without a doubt that they would have to talk about that as soon as possible. "You want to talk about it when we get home? That way, you can get the reassurance you need from me?" Gabby agreed with her husband, as that was precisely what she wanted to do: she wanted to talk to him and make sure that they were on the same page when it came to this. She wants this so bad, that she would be devastated if he didn't agree to support her.

His support means everything to her, as she doesn't want to spend the next couple months fighting with him. "Matt, I need to make sure that we're on the same page." Matt agreed with his wife and smiled, well aware that was the case. "I promise, we'll talk. But first, let's just get you home. Let's get home together and get comfortable. I want to hold you and the kids in bed with me." Gabby agreed with Matt and smiled, as that was precisely what she wanted him to do as well: hold her and their twins in bed. "I love that idea." Matt agreed with Gabby and smiled, more than ready to hold the woman he loves in the comfort of their bed.
