AN: I'm back!

Chasing Jasper

JasperPOV

1863

I rode out at dawn. I kissed my sleeping wife on the head before I left, after saddling up October. The ride was long and all I wanted to do was hold my new wife. The thought of her moaning my name and the feel of her lips on my skin kept my mind occupied for the better part of the ride. She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen walking out of my mama's house. I had that picture burned into my mind.

When I arrived in Galveston, I was immediately sent to evacuate women and children out of Houston. I did as I was told. I had some that weren't as compliant to leave but I convinced them to leave. I did my last rounds through the city and called the all clear. The soldiers I had with me were way ahead of me headed back to Galveston. So I was alone to my thoughts. As I rode, I saw three women in the distance. Figuring they were stragglers from the group I rode up to escort them.

"Ladies." I tipped my hat to them. I slid off October and stepped toward them. They carried umbrellas and had long sleeves and gloves on. "You get separated from the others?" I asked.

"Maria." The woman on the left said. "Look at him."

"Hush now." the woman in the center said. "I think we could use a little help." She said speaking to me.

"I'd be glad to accompany you. I'm here to help." I said to her.

"You do it, Maria." The girl on the right said. "I can never stop once I start."

"Believe me, Major, You will be of great use to me." The one in the center, Maria, said to me. She stepped closer to me. October must have seen something because she got a little spooked.

"Alright, then why don't we get going." I said. She pulled the cloth covering her nose and mouth down and the sun caught her face. She was pale as death and it shined like a million tiny gems.

"What in-" she grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me against her forcefully. I couldn't move, she was stronger than any woman I've ever met. She leaned in and kissed my neck.

"Ma'am, I hate to sound rude but, I'm married." It was nice to hear that out loud.

"Not anymore." She said.

Fire.

1882

I walked through the barn where I trained newborns, dragging the unconscious body of a young woman. Several of our younger newborns were watching my every move or rather the movement of the body I was dragging. I took some rope and tied her up. I shook her awake. She screamed and started crying at the sight of my red eyes. I grabbed her jaw and pulled her face close to mine.

"I suggest you shut the hell up." she started crying harder. "Otherwise, I'll kill you myself." I said even more menacingly. She cried silently, but she was quieter. I picked her up with one hand and held her up.

"Winner takes all. Anyone of you touches her before the end, I'll kill you." I hung her on a hook by her bindings in the center of the match floor. I walked to the pulley and lifted her higher in the air. The newborns had started to gather around. I grabbed the first one I saw by the arm and force her into the ring. A small girl no more than 16, but she was almost brand new. I pointed at another one, a large man bid and burly. He had been part of the life longer than she had.

"You." he stepped into the ring. "You fight until I call a winner. If you lose you leave and find something else to do for the rest of training today. If you win you keep fighting." I paused for a second. "Begin."

This is the only part that is almost too awful to be worth it. I had to go out and kill old newborns. Now that I was Maria's second in command, instead of those idiots Lucy and Nettie, it was up to me to actually run this army she had built. She made the decisions. She gave the commands. I did the dirty work.

It had been 37 years since I was changed. Maria and I had been lovers the whole time. She told me I was her mate. I didn't believe her at first and I'm still not really sure if I do. I wish I could remember my wife. I know I had one but mainly because Maria told me I could never see her again. It rang a bell when she said I was married as a human, but I couldn't remember her. Not the way she looked, or if we had kids. I couldn't even remember her name.

"Major?" the newborn that I was about to kill spotted me.

"Micah." I said.

"What can I do for you," he said then hastily added, "Sir?"

"I have orders to take you on a small raid." I said. I always told them something different and when I got them alone I killed them. I felt their terror. I felt their pain. It was evil. It took away what little humanity I had left.

When I returned from killing Micah, I found Maria waiting for me. She was insatiable sometimes. We made love like the hundreds of times before. Hard, hot, loud, and slow. And just like every other time it was great. But there was always something missing.

Afterwards, I laid on my back with Maria snuggled up next to my side. She traced the growing collection of scars on my chest. It wasn't too bad but no seasoned vampire would mess with me unless they had a death wish. I was dangerous and the scars made me look the part.

"You've accumulated more bites, mi querido." She said. Her hand flattened out on my abs.

"We've recruited smarter newborns. They learn faster and will do anything to beat me. They hope to gain your favor." I said matter-of-factly.

"You should be more careful, it would do no good to see anything happen to my Major." She said.

….

1903

I met my new second in command for the first time today. He was changed about 6 months ago by a nomad and sent to us as sabotage. When we met, I was speaking with Maria about what our forces could handle in terms of our next attack. He showed up escorted by two of our better soldiers.

"Are you Maria?" he asked quietly. I stood up to my full height and sent intimidation his way. Maria put a calm hand on my arm.

"Now, now, Major. We don't want to seem rude and uninviting to our guest."

"Recién llegado, I am who you seek. To what do I owe the…" she looked him up and down taking in his body. "Pleasure." I watched him the entire time closely, he didn't seem like a threat. I sensed no hatred, only uncertainty.

"I was sent here," he glanced at me. "by my creator. He sends a message." He stopped.

"Who is this creator of yours?" Maria questioned him. I flooded him with honest feelings.

"Cut it out. I know what you're doing." He said to me. "Her name was Lilith. She stuck around long enough to tell me her name and to give me instructions."

"How the hell do you know anything about The Major? He's my best kept secret." Je seemed a little bewildered, it was out of character for her.

"I just know. I don't know how. I just do. Look, she told me to get myself under control and then take you a message. Do you want it or not?"

"I should have your tongue ripped out for speaking that way to me." she said. I took a step forward. "Major!" I stopped, my eyes never leaving the man. "Give me the message." She said. I could hear the fire in her voice.

"The message is verbatim as follows: By the time this gets to you I will be well on my way to a larger and stronger army than you've ever had. My Husband had the real rights of this land and he always will. Being who I am I will take back this land and I will hunt you down and kill you for turning Benito over to the Volturi. My children will forever rule this land. You will regret the day you ever crossed me."

"When were you created? When did you last see Lilith? Where are her forces? How many are they? Answer me!" Maria screamed. I was in front of him in half a second, holding him above me by the throat.

"Answer her." I whispered, I push all the fear I could muster into him.

"Six months ago. I don't know where she is." He grunted and grabbed my arm. "I don't know how many she has. I'm just a messenger." I squeezed a bit harder, cutting off the air supply that gave him the ability to talk.

"Kill him." And she walked away.

His red eyes went wide and I could feel his panic. I was just about to slam him to the ground when he kicked me hard in the groin and kneed me in the jaw. I fell back and recovered as he hit the ground. He recovered just as fast. I launched myself at him; he avoided me gracefully. I saw red this man was going to make me lose my cool. I was ready to rip him to pieces. Threw a punch which he blocked. I tried all of my secret newborn weakness tricks and none of them worked. I became mad, really mad. I lost control and lunged at him. I finally made real contact and did everything I could to cause maximum damage. But he stopped my every attempt. I got my hand around his throat again and leaned up.

"Restrain him!" the soldiers that had been watching were hesitant. I glared at them. "Now!" I said with the full force of my rank. They grabbed him by the arms and put pressure on his shoulders. I stood up and paced away from them.

"Who trained you? How do you know how to fight so well?" I whirled around and they had him on his knees. One was holding his head in such a way that all it took as a slight twist and he would no longer have a head. Two others had his arms.

"I've never been trained. I just know how to fight." He said.

"How do you know?" I shouted, advancing on him.

"I don't know!" he yelled right back. The newborn soldiers tightened their grip on him. "I don't know. I just do. I think it's supposed to be a gift. You know, like yours. Three hours ago, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a punch. I didn't know how to fight until it became important to my safety. It's not the first time. I didn't know how to hunt safely. But when I woke up and was thirty I just knew. I didn't know anything about this life but I just knew to stay away from fire and out of the sun around humans. I didn't know where to find Maria but I knew where to find someone who did." He said much quieter. "I just know."

"Let him go." I said. "Leave us. Now!" I said, harshly. I took slow steps toward him. "What's your name?"

"Peter. I don't know my last name." he said

"Well, Peter, if you can whisper my real full name into my ear, I won't kill you. If you get it wrong, I will make your death slow. And painful." He stepped forward, getting as close to me as he could without making contact.

"Your name is Major Jasper Lee Whitlock. Your parents are James and Mary Elizabeth Whitlock. Two siblings, Jesse Alan and Elizabeth Cora. You had two horses of your own, October and Pistol. A dog named Piper and your wife's name is Isabella Marie."

1923

Twenty years had passed since that day. I met my brother and gave him my last name. In return he gave me the name of my wife. I still couldn't remember her. But since then I haven't been able to enjoy sex with Maria. I still do it, I have to keep up appearances. I just can't enjoy it anymore. I walked toward our new training grounds in the woods. We had just moved our camp again. Peter appeared next to me.

"Captain." I greeted.

"Major." He said.

"Any news on our next attack?" I asked.

"Nothing from our fearless leader." He said.

"And from you, Captain?" I asked.

"You know, if Maria really is our fearless leader that would make her our General. So by process of elimination: you, her second in command, should be called Colonel and I, your second in command, should be called Lieutenant Colonel." Peter said.

"I'll take that as a no." I said.

"Yeah. But, back to my point. I really like the idea of being a Lieutenant Colonel so can we start telling the newborns we've been promoted or something?" he asked.

"No. I like Major. And there's no way in hell my little brother is gonna out rank me." I said.

"Awe, Come on J-" I gave him a glare. "Major, why do like that one so much? Wouldn't you like to have a high rank?"

"It's what I was when I was changed. It's what my family and my wife knew me as. It's all I have left of my human life." I said. Peter was quiet for a second.

"Oh. Well, come on brother, let's go train some newborns."

...

1933

I was out on a hunt alone and had found quite a beautiful woman for an appetizer. I was just finishing her up when I heard a gasp behind me. I turned my head and saw a young woman no older than 18. I let the corpse drop and turned to her. I put on my sexiest charming smiley and sent lust her way.

"You really shouldn't be out so late by yourself, darlin'." I said.

"Is she…?" she stuttered.

"Afraid so and unfortunately I have to kill you too now." I ghosted in front of her. She hit me as hard as she could. It didn't faze me. I grabbed her arm and pulled her closer. She kicked me in the groin. I doubled over for a second. I may be invincible but that will hurt any man. She ran and I stopped her as soon as I stood up. She started to scream, I put my hand over her mouth. I grabbed her tight and she struggled.

"You have fight. I like that. You'll make a great addition to our little group." I said. I knocked her out and ran back towards camp.

When I got back I took her to Peter's tent. Maria wouldn't like it if I took her to ours.

"Major, what the hell, why did you bring a human here." He said. I laid her down and bit her.

"She's not human for long." I said.

"Three days!" he whisper yelled at me. "We couldn't hide her here for three days even if she managed to stay quiet!"

"She'll make it! She's a fighter." I said.

We hid her in a cabin for the next three days, somehow managing to keep her a secret until she woke. One of us stayed with her at all times keeping wet rags on her neck and face. Peter stayed with her mostly, I was a bit busier with Maria and newborns. She was quiet for the most part occasionally whimpering and crying. Peter and I did our best to comfort her. Peter was better at it that I was, hell I was the one who could change her feelings and he was better at it.

I was reading in the chair across from the hay bed she was laying on. It was getting close to time I could hear her heart beat speeding up. I was hoping that it wouldn't be me here when we woke. She might remember what happened. I wish Peter were here.

"This had better work, Jasper." Peter said.

"Captain, this woman could be conscious. I suggest formality when addressing me." I said. "I hope it works too. She would be a great addition to the army."

I brushed the loose hair from her face. She was just beginning to sweat. The fire was spreading, fast.

"She's beautiful. Jasp-… Major, is this why we're keeping her away from Maria? Because she's pretty?" he said.

"Yes. I'm not supposed to change anyone for the army unless it's an extreme circumstance. This was less than important. I could have killed her and left it at that but she fought. She fought me through all of her own fear and all of the calmness I flushed her with. When she ran she wasn't running out of fear she was running for help. She could be a great newborn soldier. So when she comes to I need your help explaining what's going on and how we're going to bring her in without making a fuss." I said, Peter just looked at me. "Yes, Captain. She's attractive but I'm not interested."

"How exactly ARE we going to get her through Maria?" he asked.

"We'll figure something out."

I was jolted from my memory by the sound of her heart stopping. It had been my constant metronome speeding up and up until now.

"Dammit." I said under my breath. I pushed off the wall I was leaning on and closed the book I held. Peter was supposed to be here already.

I stood blocking her only exit, there were no windows, and waited. She could have busted through a wall now but she didn't have to know that yet. She stirred. I stayed quiet not even breathing. She opened her eyes were no longer the pale green they had been but strikingly red. I watched her eyes focus and refocus on everything she saw above her. The dust, the spiders crawling across the ceiling, she started to reach for something above her while sitting up. Her eyes never left the ceiling. She saw her hand and stopped saying perfectly still she examined her newly pale skin. She turned her hand over with vampire speed and gasped. She wasn't expecting it.

"Oh." She said, her hand flew to her throat. "What's happened?" she said and jumped again this time her hand covered her mouth. She did sound marginally different. I sent her safe and calm feelings.

"Hello." I said in a small but firm voice. It demanded respect but was supposed to make her feel safe. Her head snapped around.

"You." she said, standing up, faster than she expected. "Where am I?" she demanded.

"Just calm down, darlin'." I said forcing more calmness on her. "No one is going to hurt you."

"Oh! I bet that's what you told that woman last night right before you killed her." she said firmly.

"I did what I had to do to survive." I said louder, nearing my Major voice. "You'll understand that soon enough. Not that it matters, but I told her exactly what was going to happen to her. She made the mistake of believing I meant it sexually." Her face contorted in disgust.

"Oh you are disgusting. How dare you say I'll understand? I would never kill someone!" she screech and advanced on me. I stopped her making sure to protect my genitals and keep her under control.

"If you don't stop and let me explain what's happened I'll be forced to make you." I said grabbing her around the waist with her back turned to me. She elbowed me hard and managed to get free.

"I'll not be letting you hurt me." I threw myself into a crouch.

"I don't want to." I heard Peter running. He could hear us I knew she could hear him too.

"I don't believe you! What are you? Why are your eyes red?" she screamed. She started to the left and I followed her then the other way.

"I'll answer your questions and more when you calm down." I said.

"No!" she screamed and tried to get passed me. I grabbed her and did my best to subdue her. Just then Peter burst through the door. She took one look at him and I let her go. No one told me to but there was something about how Peter looked at her. She ran straight to him and threw her arms around him. He stood there a second, dumbfounded.

"Can I be of some assistance?" he said looking from me to her.

"Please!" she said. "Get him away from me, he's gonna kill me."

Peter, still dumbfounded, looked down at her and then back up at me, raising an eyebrow. I had my hands on my hips. I rolled my eyes and dropped my head and waved at him to carry on.

"Now, the Major wouldn't do that." he said. "I won't let him."

She looked up at him. "The Major? Are you with him? Are you going to kill me?"

Peter gave me a winning smile. "Yes. The Major. Yes, I'm his second in command and no, we aren't going to kill you." He looked down at her. "I'm… The Captain."

"Charlotte."

Late 1933

"She's on the dead list Jasper!" Peter whispered to me.

"I know! What can I do? I can't just disobey her. It was hard enough to get Charlotte into this without all three of us dying!" I said.

"You can't kill her, she's my mate! You might as well kill me too!" Peter said.

"Look, until the time comes tonight you are to act and remain in your place. We are going to kill the newborns on the list tonight and there's nothing we can do about it." I heard Maria nearby. "There's no time to get attached." I winked at him. "Have I made myself perfectly clear?" I said with all the authority I had. A face of understanding flashed through him before he put back on the upset face he'd had on previously.

"Yes, Sir."

"Excused."

Later that night, we took the newborns on the list to the training grounds, telling them they had been chosen for one on one training. One by one I took each one back to where Peter had been waiting. He and I killed them immediately and through them into the fire. Then we waited a few minutes and started the process over until all that was left was Charlotte.

"Charlotte. Your turn." I said. Charlotte was never the same around me as she was around the others. She didn't trust me.

"Where did the others go?" she said folding her arms in front of her. "Why haven't any of them come back yet?"

"They were given orders not to. Now go. The Captain is waiting for us." I said. I followed behind her until we reached the fire.

"Charlotte?" Peter said. I gave him the nod we had discussed. "Char, Run!"

"What?" she said looking back at me and I advanced on her.

"Run, dammit!" he yelled and ran at me. I let him hit me. I through in a few good punches and let him throw me in the opposite direction and ran after her.

1938

It had a boring five years since Peter and Charlotte had "escaped". Maria beat the hell out of me and nearly killed me. I managed to convince her that she still needed me, but she's been suspicious ever since I've kept myself on the straight and narrow.

It was the same routine for me, keep the newborns from killing each other, keep them fed, train them twice a day, sleep with Maria.

I was rounding up the next newborn group to take and feed when I heard something in the forest.

"Alright you all know the drill. If you get caught or kill more than one. I'll wipe your asses off the map." I said. "Alright get going. You have 30 minutes."

I turned to the forest and walked straight in.

"Jasper." I turned at the sound of my brother's voice.

"Peter?" I said. "What are you doing here?"

"I came for you. Jasper, I see the way this life and this army affects you. You need out. Now." he said.

"I can't just leave Maria will follow me. She'll kill me if she finds me." I said. I turned away to leave and watch the newborns. Peter grabbed my arm.

"Jasper, look Char doesn't really care for me coming to get you out. She hasn't quite learned to trust you yet. But, she trusts me so please just listen. Before I left the chain of command was her, you, me. Now that I'm gone it's just you two. If you disappear she can't follow you. If she does she'll lose everything. Her Army will go nuts she'll get cornered by the Volturi and she'll be killed. It's win win!" he said.

"Even if I did leave, how would I make her lose the scent? You know she'll send someone after me." I said. We'll take the long way back to me and Char's place. We'll cross the river a few times, we'll make a few circles. We'll do whatever it takes. I just can't stand knowing that my brother is torturing himself here." Peter said.

"Okay." I said. "Let's go."

We took off.

"By the way, Jasper. You are almost more scars than vampire now."

1948

Living with Peter and Char had been nice. Ten years of real love and companionship, had made me feel like I had a family again. I don't know if I would ever feel human again.

The only downside to this was Peter and Charlotte were always focused on each other. It was normal with them being mates, but it was hard not to feel lonely around them. Peter knew how the relationship affected me and tried to tone it down some. Char came to care very much for me. She finally started to trust me about three years into me living with them. She was always there to let me vent my less masculine feelings to without the ridicule from Peter. They have been my best friends that I could ever remember.

Most of what I know from my human life is from what Peter had told me. His "Knower", as he calls it, has become more of a question and answer thing now. It no longer requires a threat to his life. All I have to do is ask a certain question and he can answer it. I've asked him all about my family and what I did before I was turned. I worked for my father up until I joined the Confederate Army. I was a Major for the cavalry when Maria found me and killed me.

He's told me little about my wife though. Every time I ask he tells me generic stuff like her name, which is burned into my head, and that we married soon after we met. But whenever I asked specific questions, it's like his gift just quit working. He said "something is blocking the details." I only know what my mind has given me back in recent years, she had beautiful brownish reddish hair and was very small. She was short, but the perfect size for me. Any details after that are non-existent.

We never lived in the same place long. We moved to around every six months or so. We either camped built a small cabin or bought one in some deep wooded area. It was secluded and we rarely left it, except to hunt. None of us kept many belongings, we kept a couple changes of casual clothes to relax in and a nice suit for Peter and I for special occasions and a party dress for Charlotte. We made sure to make our hunting clothes all black and that they kept up with the latest fashion. It was easier to keep them clean and we could move unnoticed in the dark.

We had been living in a cabin on a lake a couple hours north of Caribou, Maine. We weren't thinking about moving for another few months but I needed some space. Peter and Charlotte were my family and I really hate to leave them like this but I couldn't let Peter try to talk me out of it. I had all my clothes and belongings packed and loaded into the 1944 Chevy Truck I had just bought, leaving the car for Peter and Char. I picked up a pen and set it to paper. I told them that I needed some time alone and that when I figured myself out and where I would be staying I would send word. I made sure to tell Peter to behave for Charlotte and that Char knew I would be back. I signed my name and left it on our small coffee table.

I took off. I didn't look back and I drove. About a day in, I had made it to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I parked my truck and rooted around in my bag for my wallet I went in search of some new clothes so I could get rid of the ones I had.

I found a good place and started buying the essentials, I avoided the eyes of the young man in the store. It was late and I didn't have anything to hide my eyes but the brim of my hat. I piled my choices on his counter and he went about checking it out.

"That's fifty dollars even, Mister." He said. I counted out the money and threw it on the counter, keeping my head low.

"Thanks." I said.

"You want me to wrap 'em up?" the young man asked.

"No thank you." I picked up the purchases and rushed back to the truck I changed in a public restroom and threw out the old clothes.

This was a new beginning for me. I would hunt less, I couldn't stand hurting people any more than I had to. I would only hunt criminals too. I found a place outside of town to stay in and holed up there during the day. I had been alone for a few months now and I was doing okay. I only hunted about once a week, sometime once every 10 days if I felt good. I felt better about not hunting as much but it was torture to say the least. I would occasionally try to socialize at night when my eyes where only gray. But it was painful.

I was out one night and it started to look like rain. I had just made the acquaintance of a nice young woman out next to the apartment I was staying in. As usual, she, like all the others, threw herself at me and tried desperately to get me to take her home with me. I politely avoided that conversation the whole time and started walking around town watching for my next kill. I did this a few days before every hunt to make sure I wasn't hurting an innocent person. It had was starting to rain and I hadn't brought my coat. I was wearing my nicer suit and didn't wait to ruin it. I ducked into a small diner on the corner. I would choke down some coffee and try to wait it out.

As soon as I entered the diner I felt it. There was another vampire here. I had already made it a point to meet the local coven. They consisted of two pairs. I told them my intentions. They agreed to let me stay provided that I didn't draw attention to myself. This one wasn't them.

I scanned the almost empty diner and my eyes halted on her. She was a tiny thing only a little smaller than Charlotte. She had a pixie hair cut like back in the twenty's. We made eye contact and she smiled invitingly. Her eyes were golden, unlike any other vampire I had ever seen. She was sitting at the bar so I strolled up casually to sit next to her.

"Coffee." I said to the woman behind the bar. She placed a mug in front of my and pour the coffee in it. "Thanks." I took a sip of the searing bitter liquid. Behind the straight face I held, I was cringing. I set the cup down wrapping my hands around the warmth. It was a nice change. I kept my stare forward and the woman looked at me expectantly.

"You're new in town." I said quietly, taking another sip. "You haven't thought to meet the neighbors?" I asked.

"No. Just passing through." She said. Her voice was high pitch and it rang clear.

"Miss." I said getting the waitresses attention. "She'll have a coffee too." I said waving her over to the vampire.

"Why would I want that nasty stuff?" she said so only I could hear.

"It looks less suspicious. Sip it slow, don't react to the taste." I said. She did so, failing to hide her disgust the first time. "If you're passing through, what reason could you possibly have to stop unless it's to feed." I took another sip. "It's not nice to eat from a table not meant for you."

"I'm meeting someone here." She said matter of factly.

"When?" I asked.

"Right now." she giggled. I hadn't heard anyone come in. I looked around the diner.

"Who?" I asked.

"You silly. I'm here for you." she said. I slammed my cup down breaking it. It didn't faze her. I looked from her to the waitress who was looking at me curiously.

"Sorry. I'll pay for that. One more please." I said.

"Who sent you?" I said very seriously. I turned my full body toward her. "Was it Maria?"

"No one sent me. I have these visions. That tell the future. It's my gift." She clarified. "When I woke up from the change, I had one of you here. I knew I had to meet you, so I waited."

"How did you know what day?" I asked. She pointed to a large tear away Day by day calendar hanging on the wall behind me.

"What else was in this vision?" I asked. If Peter could just know things then, this woman could see the future.

"Well I meet you and I'm supposed to tell you all about this coven, this family, farther South of here. The Cullens." She said.

"What about them? And why me? What's so special about me?" I asked.

"I don't know why you. I can't control the visions. The Cullens are like me."

"How?" I asked.

"My eyes aren't red. Granted I'm not as strong as you are but I hunt animals for nourishment. Not people. You could do it too. I know you don't like to actually, you know." She said. I knew.

"I find it hard to believe that anyone enjoys that. That is unless they're newborn." I said. "So these Cullens, they hunt animals, too?"

"Yes, that's where I'm headed actually. I want to meet them. Maybe I can become part of their coven. I hate being alone." she paused and sipped again. "I think you're supposed to come with me." she said.

"You expect me to trust you, just like that?" I asked.

"Well, we can travel together for a little while. Get to know each other. Then we can make the decision to meet them or not." She said. She paused and stared off into space for a moment. "Yeah they'll still be in Hickory, North Carolina. You know how I know that?"

"No. Back to my original question. Am I supposed to just trust you?" I asked.

"You already do. Because you just made a decision to give it two years with me and then we'll go meet them." She said, smiling smugly behind her cup.

"I don't even know your name." I said, still trying to deny it.

"Hello Jasper. My name is Alice."

1950

Alice and I became traveling nomads for two years. I sold my truck and gave away most of what didn't fit in my backpack. Alice carried her own backpack and we traveled on foot together. Over the first year, I started feeding on animal blood and my eyes began to change color. By the end of the first year my eyes were solid gold and I hadn't felt fear from my prey since I left Philadelphia.

I couldn't believe this way of life could sustain us. I was beginning to feel alive again. I could interact in the daytime when there was no sunshine and no one paid me much attention.

"Jazz, you know we should go to North Carolina." She said. I was apprehensive about meeting the Cullens.

"I'm not sure about meeting them. I don't want something to go wrong and mess up what we have here." I said. Alice and I have been in a relationship for about a nine months now, she told me when we started that I wasn't her mate. I was really beginning to really like this; her. She's the reason I had been so happy. We had been living in Winnipeg for a few months. It was wonderful. I had a beautiful lady to experience it with. I thought about my wife occasionally but I like to think she'd want me to be happy.

"Jasper, you know this is going to end at some point right? I've seen you meet your mate. You'll be much happier with her." she said, smiling and brushing my hair out of my eyes. "Why are you so intent on drawing this out? Meeting the Cullens is what's next for us."

"I already told you." I brushed her off. I turned my back on her.

"No, there's more to it than that. Jasper, I haven't known you long but I know you well enough." She said. Her voice flooded me with care and compassion. I looked back at her. She had followed me and was right there.

"Alice," I looked into her eyes she was a wonderful person. Beautiful too. "You saw me before you met me. You had the chance to get accustomed to the way I look."

She didn't respond.

"Darlin', part of how I got respect so easily in the Mexican Coven was because I had these scars. To a vampire with normal upbringing, like you, my scars mean I'm dangerous. A threat. Any coven leader would kill me as soon as they saw me if they wanted to protect their territory." I explained. "The Cullens are smart. They would kill me on sight."

"They won't do that. I'll be there to help and you could use your gift. I know that once they know a little about your past and the difference between then and now, they'll love you." she said. I sighed and started throwing my stuff into my backpack.

"If we get there and they don't react well, I'm running. If you want to be with me, you'll follow me." I said.

"That won't be an issue." She said he hopped on my turned back and kissed me on the cheek.

"Go pack."

We ran all the way to Hickory. When we arrived, Alice and I cleaned up and put on clean clothes. We walked around town in the evening. The town was busy, bit we slipped through unnoticed. We did some shopping. Alice loved shopping. I carried her modest parcels in my right hand and escorted her on my left. I felt eyes on me; I couldn't tell if they were human or not.

As Alice and I entered the book shop, I turned and gave a quick scan of the street. I saw no one I should be weary of. I still felt someone watching. Alice stayed near the Romance section, I browsed History. I found a promising Civil War Book and a few historical fiction books I was interested in.

"Jasper?" I heard Alice call. "Where are you?"

"Coming, Darling." I said. Alice handed me a couple of books. "Shall we pay for these and be on our way? We don't want to miss that dinner?"

I gave her a look. I was dreading this this meeting.

"Of course." I said. I handed the clerk some money. "Keep the change."

As we left the store, I caught a glimpse of a man. He turned and walked briskly away as I saw him.

"Where are they located?" I asked. I've looked briefly at a map of Hickory and knew it.

"Just outside of town, I can get us there." she said.

We dropped our purchases off at the inn we had chosen upon arriving. Alice and I walked to a safe place to begin running and she led me through the forest until we can upon a house. It was grand and robust. Alice emerged from the woods, into the clearing, and announced herself. I stayed hidden, watching Alice closely.

"Hello?" she called and turned in a circle admiring land. "We're not a threat I promise! We just want to talk."

"Then why is your partner still hiding?" a blonde man was standing on the porch. A boy with bronze hair, a bear of a man with dark hair, a woman with strawberry blonde hair , and a woman more beautiful than any I had ever seen were behind him. Even more so than Alice.

"He's weary of strangers." She said, clasping her hands in front of her. The blonde man stepped forward staying his coven with a wave.

"He sounds smart. But, we aren't the newcomers. You are. I believe my family would feel more at ease if we could see both parties." He said. "Where are my manners? My name is Carlisle Cullen."

"Alice." She said. "Brandon. Alice Brandon." She said.

"And your friend?" he nodded toward where I was crouched. Alice looked back towards me. I sighed.

"His name is Jasper Whitlock." She said. "He's a great man."

"Then why don't we meet face to face?" he said coming completely off the porch.

"Actually, it's Major Jasper Whitlock." I stood and stepped out of the shadows, so to speak. I kept my hands in my pockets and the brim on my hat low.

"As in THE Major?" the bronze haired man stepped forward.

"Hm, I guess I wasn't a very well-kept secret." I said.

"I apologize for my son. Edwards's gift gives him a bit of an advantage over most others." Carlisle said.

"He has a gift, too. It's powerful." Edward said.

"Son, please let them explain themselves." Carlisle said.

"I have visions of the future." Alice started. "I saw myself meeting Jasper and I knew everything would be okay no matter what he looked like." She looked at me. I took my hat off and stood tall. I let them see my scars. I was ready to run. The women behind Carlisle cringed and the bear stood in between me and them.

"How did this happen?" Carlisle asked.

"I was a leader in the Mexican Coven. I was put in charge of handling newborns."

2004

We had been part of the Cullen Coven for fifty-five years. They welcomed us with surprisingly open arms. Alice had been acting strange the whole time. Her feelings have been different since that night. We stayed together for years but it started to get to me that she didn't act the same. I found out why one night, Alice and I had gone to hunt and she confided in me.

"I know who my mate is." She said quietly. I froze I had hoped it wouldn't end like this.

"Who's that?" I asked.

"He is taking much, much longer than what's considered normal to realize it." she said.

"Who is he?" I asked again.

"Edward."

We broke up peacefully. We stayed protective of each other; it was mistake at every school we attended.

School, another thing about living with the Cullens every time we moved we started the process of high school again. Occasionally we'd stray and work in the new town. I preferred to teach history at the local high school. Alice was a fashion consultant.

Every school we went to immediately lumped Alice and I together, neither of us minded pretending. It was easier than getting involved. We had moved thirteen times since 1950 and we had been at fourteen for about a year now. Forks, Washington was a nice enough town. It had lost of hunting space and it was almost always cloudy so we didn't have to hide.

It was the first day back from summer break, and the school was buzzing. Forks had a new student. I could smell a difference in the school already but I ignored it, it was never anything good.

I took several AP classes with my "twin" sister. It the last seventy years my family grew from one to several. Rose was like Char was to me. I still kept in contact with Peter and Char but Rose was convenient. Emmett took normal classes ever playing the average meathead in high school. Edward and Alice were a grade below us and normally had each other to keep themselves company. Good. Maybe Edward will pull his head out of his ass.

Rose and I sat next to each other taking notes. I wrote everything down in my perfectly messy handwriting. Rose used short hand in perfect script and then doodled hears and Emmett's name. She always said it was for effect but I knew it was the mate thing. I could feel it on her.

We all dreaded lunch, it was when we sat in an isolated corner and pretended to eat human food. It was gross. I sat with my head down pushing cardboard pizza around and tearing it apart. I sat close to Alice my hand on her leg like always. I tried to keep my distance the first few days to see if the humans would get it but they just didn't they always assumed. So we played along. Alice and I finished playing with our food and I got up to throw it away and I caught sight of the beautiful Reddish Brownish hair I had only barely been able to remember.

There's no way. She died years and years ago.
