Peter looked at May, who was fast asleep in bed. They had already run a DNA test, confirming that she was their daughter. She looked ever so peaceful, fast asleep, and Peter carefully closed the door so as not to wake her up.
"How is she?" MJ asked.
"Sleeping soundly in bed," Peter assured her. "After the night she's had, I can't blame her."
MJ then hugged him and cried into her shoulder. "After all these years, we finally have our daughter back."
"And I'll make sure we'll never lose her again," Peter promised.
"So the long lost princess has finally returned," said Johnny as he walked up smiling.
After what happened with Aunt May, Peter didn't want to risk his family in another cheap hotel. To that end, he decided to call Johnny and ask if they could stay at the Baxter Building, which he was more than happy to oblige.
"Johnny, we can't thank you enough for allowing us to stay here," said Peter gratefully.
"Happy to help it, especially under the circumstances," said Johnny. "The Fantastic Four are on a bit of a break now. It's just Ben and me for now; Reed and Sue have decided to take some time off to fix things."
Peter nodded. Reed, more or less, supported the Registration Act right through and helped Tony create the cyborg Thor that killed Goliath. Sue supported him until then and then defected to the Secret Avengers.
"Let's hope they get over their rough patches," said Peter.
"I'm sure you and MJ went for your own rough patches; if you two can kiss and makeup, I'm sure there's plenty of hope for Reed and Sue," said Johnny optimistically. "Anyway, Reed agrees that you can stay here for as long as you like."
"Thanks, I just hope I don't get arrested for fighting the Gray Goblin," said Peter.
"I wouldn't worry," said Ghost-Spider as she approached them. "It was obviously in self-defence, and you have your daughter to consider. It will be Norman Osborn that might find himself in hot water."
"You mean for abducting her in the first place," MJ muttered bitterly.
"Matt Murdock has agreed to help put charges on Norman for kidnapping," said Peter.
"And no doubt he'll blame it on the serum that turned him into the Green Goblin, which he allegedly claims he's cured of," said Johnny, folding his arms. "How a man like that was put in charge of the Thunderbolts, I'll never know."
"You and me both, matchstick," Ben grumbled as he walked over, making it sound like a rampaging rhino was running through the room.
"Ben, can you be a bit more gentle? May's fast asleep," MJ hissed.
"Sorry," Ben winced.
"Let's say we have this conversation away from May," Peter suggested, then looked at Ghost Spider. "And we have a few questions for you, and this time, I'm not gonna take no for an answer."
Ghost Spider sighed. "I suppose it is time for me to reveal everything."
With that agreed, they made their way into the living room.
"I take it you want to know who is behind this mask," Ghost Spider assumed.
"Ever since I met you, there's always been something familiar about you," said Peter, folding his arms. "Not just your voice, but your moves are exactly the same as mine, and your web shooters are the same design as the ones I use."
"I suppose there's no use in hiding my identity now, but I warn you it may come as a shock," she warned.
Everyone watched as she lowered her hood and began to remove her mask, and she was true to her word. It was a shock to see Gwen Stacy standing right before them.
"G-Gwen?" Peter gasped.
"That impossible," MJ stared.
Ben looked at Johnny. "Why are they so shocked?"
"I recognise her; I think she's Peter's ex-girlfriend," Johnny blinked. "But I was under the impression she was dead."
"It's a long story, and I'll tell you everything," Gwen promised.
Gwen then began to explain everything. Peter just sat there and listened. She explained that Doctor Strange rescued her soul and sent her into the past, where she was reborn. She also explained that the spell he used gave her his powers and the memories above him and MJ.
However, the reason she went into the past stunned him more than anything. Apparently, a demon had somehow messed with their lives, and the altered realities of their marriage never happened. She also explained that something got in the way whenever they tried to rekindle their old feelings and forced them to separate.
"So you've done all this just for us," said Peter.
Gwen nodded. "And I like to use this opportunity to apologise for blaming you for my father's death. It was never your fault; my father was merely doing his duty, trying to save lives. I should've really blamed the one that put those lives in danger. It was just so easy to blame Spider-Man."
"You don't owe me anything. I should be the one to apologise," said Peter with tears in his eyes. "I failed to save you."
"Peter, you did everything you could to save me," said Gwen gently. "I'm at least happy that you could move on and glad that someone was MJ."
"So you're not jealous?" MJ asked, still stunned.
"Maybe a little," Gwen shrugged. "But I have to admit that the two of you are perfect for one another. When I first met Peter, I completely misunderstood him."
"Hey, I was the one ignoring you and Harry," Peter reminded her.
"Because you are concerned for your aunt," said Gwen. "I never even considered what kind of problems you were facing. Then, when you tried to talk, I kept pushing your way. But MJ was different; the two of you practically formed a connection the first time you officially met one another."
"And yet I kept pushing him away because I didn't want to separate men in my life," said MJ, looking at Peter. "It took me a long time to figure out that those two men were, in fact, one courageous man."
Peter then looked at Gwen. "So what happens now?"
Gwen shrugged. "With my altered memories, I can't say for certain. My memory at this point is of an altered future. Though I think we should consider making everyone forget that you're Spider-Man."
"Doctor Strange said he should have everything sorted by tomorrow," said Peter. "Hopefully, this nightmare will be behind us soon."
"I heard there was another incident regarding your aunt," said Johnny.
Peter nodded. "Yeah, Eddie showed up and killed a nurse, but it turns out she wasn't a nurse."
"We still don't know who hired her, and obviously, she's not talking," said Gwen.
"And this Eddie Brock?" Ben asked.
"He's under close observation. I don't know what happened to the Symbian, though, and that worries me," said Peter.
"And your aunt?" Johnny asked.
"Jarvis insisted that she'd be taken to a private hospital with much better security," said Peter. "Before we took every precaution to ensure she wouldn't be harmed again. It wasn't for Eddie. I hate to think what would have happened."
"Settle down, Tiger," said MJ, grasping his hand. "We've all had a rough night."
"No kidding," said Ben as he yawned. "I think I'm going to hit the hay."
"Same here," said Johnny, getting to his feet. "See you in the morning."
Johnny then left, leaving Peter and MJ alone with Gwen.
MJ then looked at Gwen. "Gwen, I know you've already done a lot for us, but there's one thing I want to ask you."
"What's that?" Gwen asked.
"Would you be May's godmother?" MJ smiled.
Gwen stared at her. "You sure?"
"I think it's a great idea," Peter smiled. "After all you've been looking out for all this time, we might as well make it official."
"I would be honoured," Gwen smiled.
May woke up the next morning. She hoped that everything that had happened the previous night wasn't a dream, but when she opened her eyes, she found herself in a completely different bedroom. She instantly hopped out of bed and opened the door.
She didn't see anyone, but she could smell something cooking in the kitchen and follow the smell. There, she saw her mommy and daddy. Her mother was sitting at the table while her father was cooking pancakes.
"Mommy! Daddy!" May cheered.
Her mother looked down and smiled at her. "Look who's up."
Her father turned his head and smiled at her. "I hope you like pancakes, sweetheart."
"I love them!" May smiled.
"Then you're going to love your father's pancakes," her mother laughed.
May climbed onto the seat and sat at the table, and her father gave her some pancakes. Her mother was right. They were delicious. Soon, they were joined by a woman with short blond hair whom she didn't recognise but was just as beautiful as her mother.
"Nice to see you're well rested after your little adventure yesterday?" the woman smiled.
"Who are you?" May asked curiously.
The woman blinked and then laughed. "That's right, you won't recognise me, but we met last night. I'm Ghost Spider."
"Oh, thank you for bringing me to my mommy and daddy," May smiled.
"It's all right, May; I was glad to do so," she said, ruffling her hair. "And you can call me Gwen."
May looked at her parents. "So what are we going to do today?"
"Well, your father has some business to take care of, but you can spend the rest of the time with me," her mother smiled.
"Does Daddy have to beat up some bad guys?" May asked.
"No, Daddy has to make sure that no one hurts our family any more," her father smiled.
May spent the rest of the day with her mother at the Baxter Building; she couldn't believe she was living in the same house as the Fantastic Four. She was excited to meet the Human Torch and the Thing, but sadly, Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman weren't home. However, she got to spend time with their kids, Franklin and Valeria; the latter was smart for a three-year-old.
She also got to play with Auntie Gwen, who had fun playing hide and seek with her. Later that day, her mother began showing her the family photo album.
"And that your father when he just started high school," she said.
"He looks funny, Mommy," May giggled.
"That was before your father became a superhero," her mother laughed.
"Are they his mommy and daddy?" May asked, pointing to an elderly couple behind him.
"No, sweetie, I'm afraid your father lost his parents when he was very young, younger than you, in fact," she said, holding her tight. "His aunt and uncle raised him, and they treated him like a son, so I suppose you could say they are his mommy and daddy."
"That means there, my grandma and grandpa?" May asked curiously.
"I suppose they are, but I'm afraid Grampa Ben is no longer with us," said her mother sadly. "As for Grandma May, you'll see her soon."
"She has the same name as me?" May blinked.
Her mother smiled and kissed her on the forehead. "We named you after her. Now, this picture was taken just after we were married."
May looked at her mother in her wedding dress. "You look so pretty, Mommy."
"Thank you, sweetheart," she said; she looked at the album sadly. "I'm just sorry we don't have any pictures of you when you were born. You were taken from us before we had a chance."
"Why was I taken from you?" May asked.
"A really bad man wanted to hurt your father; in fact, he hurt him again and again."
"But why does he hate daddy so much?"
"I don't know, sweetheart. I really don't know, and I don't think he does either."
HERBIE then flew over to them. "Mrs Parker, you have a visitor."
"Thank you, HERBIE, you can let them in," she said.
"Who is it mommy?" May asked curiously.
Her mother then picked her up. "Someone who is dying to meet you."
Her mother carried her over to the door and then placed her down. When she opened the door, May's eyes widened when she saw her grandmother, who was currently wearing a sling. Standing next to her was an old man she didn't recognise.
"May, this is your grandmother, May," said MJ.
Her grandmother beamed down at her and knelt down towards her. "It's so wonderful to finally meet you, May."
May couldn't help but wrap her arms around her grandmother, who stroked her back with her good arm.
"And this gentleman is Jarvis, and he's a friend," said MJ.
"Hello," said May.
"Why hello there, Miss May," Jarvis smiled.
"I appreciate you coming all this way, Jarvis," said MJ.
"It was my pleasure, Miss Parker," Jarvis nodded. "The doctors say Miss Parker is well enough to leave the hospital."
Grandma looked around. "Where's Peter?"
"Peter had to meet someone," said MJ.
Peter was at the Sanctum Santorum; Doctor Strange had informed him that the spell was ready.
"So everyone I don't want to remember will forget who I am?" Peter asked.
"Yes, and your identity will be kept hidden unless you reveal your face to anyone or tell them who you are," Strange explained. "However, the spell can only be cashed once per person. If you reveal your identity to the public again, I will not be able to do anything to help you."
"Hopefully, that won't happen," said Peter.
"If it does, I would suggest making preparations, just in case," said Strange.
Peter took a deep breath and stepped into the circle, and Doctor Strange began to cast the spell. Peter wanted his family and the superhero community to remember, but he also decided it was probably best that Harry and Liz knew who he was, assuming that Harry ever came out of his coma. The spell was over rather quickly, and there was no indication that it had worked.
"Did it work?" Peter asked.
"Wong, can you give us today's paper?" Strange asked.
Wong was Doctor Strange's manservant. He kept everything orderly in the sanctum. He quickly approached with today's paper and gave it to Strange.
A smile appeared on his face. "Take a look."
Peter took the paper and saw that he had made the front page but as Peter Parker. He could see himself and MJ hugging their daughter, but he wasn't wearing a costume. Additionally, there was no reference to him being Spider-Man; there was mention of Spider-Man battling the Gray Goblin, but that was it.
"It worked," said Peter.
"You don't need to sound so surprised," Strange chuckled.
"I'm sorry. It's just nice to have my family free from harassment," said Peter, relieved.
He then suddenly got a phone call and saw that it was Liz. "Liz, what's up?"
"Peter, it's Harry, he's woken up!" she said.
Peter didn't waste a moment and went to the hospital, where Harry was awake.
"Hey, Pete, you look like you've seen a ghost," Harry smiled.
"I just can't believe you're awake," said Peter, stunned.
"And I can't believe I've been in a coma for six years," Harry groaned as he leaned back against his pillow. "Liz has pretty much told me everything that I've missed. She also mentioned that my father took your daughter from you. Pete, I can't apologise enough."
"You're hardly to blame for your father's actions," said Peter. "What's important now is that she's back with her parents."
"Yeah, but what's stopping my father from coming after her again?"
"You don't have to worry about that."
Peter then explained that thanks to Doctor Strange's help, everyone, including his father, had forgotten that he was Spider-Man.
"So everyone has forgotten?" Harry stared.
"Except for my family, the superhero community and a few friends," Peter smiled.
"And I woke up just after the spell?" Harry frowned.
"I suppose that was one side-effect, a nice side-effect though."
"I promise I won't tell anyone, and I'm sure Liz will do the same," Harry assured him. "But I would keep it secret from Normie for now, at least until he understands."
Peter nodded. "So… has Liz expressed her concerns about the Osborn legacy?"
Harry closed his eyes. "She has, and I can't say I blame her. My actions nearly killed my own son. Not to mention the stress I put her through when I kidnapped her and her stepbrother. If it wasn't for you and Ghost Spider, I hate to think about what would have happened."
"So you're going through with the divorce?" Peter assumed.
Harry sighed. "We are, and to be honest, I could do some distance between me and my father myself."
"So what are you going to do?" Peter asked.
"I honestly don't know."
"Well, don't hesitate to ask for help."
Peter then left the room and found Liz standing there.
"He's told you?" Liz asked.
Peter nodded. "And he doesn't blame you for trying to distance yourself from him."
"I know he is a good man in heart, but he's always allowed his father to control his life, and I don't want that for our son," said Liz regretfully. She then looked up at him and smiled. "By the way, Pete, I'm glad that you were able to find your daughter."
"Thanks; speaking of which, I better get back home," said Peter.
"Well, when you get everything settled with little May, I would love it if you can bring her along for a play date. Normie could really do with interacting with children more his age.
"I'll talk to MJ about it," said Peter.
Peter then made it back home without anyone pointing at him or calling him Spider-Man. It was an immense relief to know that his secret identity was now a secret again.
"I'm home!" Peter yelled.
"Daddy, I missed you!" May cried and jumped into his arms.
"How's my little pumpkin?" Peter smiled as he spun her around. "You've been good?"
"She's been an absolute doll, Peter," said Aunt May as she arrived.
"Hey, Aunt May, I'm sorry I wasn't here when you arrived," Pete apologised.
"I understand perfectly, Peter," said Aunt May, hugging him. "But tell me, did your appointment with Doctor Strange go all right?"
"Were you sick, Daddy?" May asked.
Peter laughed. "No, sweetheart. Doctor Strange is a powerful wizard who cast a spell that made everyone forget I was Spider-Man."
"But I still remember your superhero?" May frowned, confused.
"That's because the spell allowed those I want to remember who I am," Peter explained. "And the spell had one unintended side-effect: Harry is now out of his coma."
"Really?" said Aunt May, surprised. "I was never too fond of that Osborn boy, but I understand he's your friend."
"Yeah, but I'm afraid both he and Liz are splitting up," said Peter regretfully.
Aunt May sighed. "Yet more lives ruined because of his father."
"Where's MJ?" Peter asked, noting the absence of his wife.
"Oh, she and Gwen are watching TV," Aunt May explained.
Suddenly, they heard screams coming from the living room, and Peter and Aunt May rushed into the room.
"What's the matter?" Peter asked.
"Peter, you're back," said MJ, turning around to face him. "It's horrible, Peter. It's horrible."
"What's going on?" Peter asked, confused.
Gwen looked at him, completely shaken. "It's Captain America, he's just been assassinated."
