Chapter 44
They ended up eating pizza.
And watching a western classic movie in black and white.
And talking a lot about what they would do when Maura would go to DC in two weeks. Jane was excited, asking Maura a ton of different questions, to make sure Jane could have everything Maura could possibly need for her experiment of being a full-time writer to succeed.
"Jane, stop worrying, please. A full-time writer needs a computer and good internet connection for research." Maura smiled gently at her. She knew Jane wanted to make everything perfect for her, but the last thing she wanted was this to be a source of stress for Jane. "I will be there with you. If anything is missing, we will figure it out together…"
"Okay…" Jane exhaled, relaxing. "I just want this experiment to work, you know?"
"I do…" Maura kissed her lovingly.
They were making out in bed, lights off, knowing they would drift off to blissful sleep together. Jane was holding Maura tightly against her, Maura like putty in her hands, when Jane came up with an unexpected question when they broke their kiss for air:
"Do you think we are… wasting time… for not moving faster… with… us?"
Maura looked at her, furrowing her brows, not sure if she understood. Maura was not exactly good with euphemisms, and it took her a moment to process what Jane meant.
Maura smiled gently at Jane, her hands moving to cup both chiseled cheeks, while she looked intensely at chocolate brown eyes in the semidarkness of the room:
"No, I don't think we are wasting time… The same way I don't think we wasted time taking this long to be together, I don't think we are wasting time taking our time to get more physical… Other people… They progress everything together… knowing each other as people, knowing each other bodies and reactions, it is in sync when they meet and as their dating progresses. We had more than ten years of knowing each other as people, and we know each other really, really well… We need to give ourselves some time to play catch up in knowing our bodies and reactions…"
Jane nodded, and her relief was palpable. Maura tilted Jane's head sideways, and let her lips kiss Jane's high cheekbone, the soft spot right by her ear, before taking an earlobe tantalizingly into her warm mouth. She heard Jane gasp and hold her tightly.
"See… I didn't know you would have this reaction…" Maura whispered by Jane's ear, before planting little kisses slowly across the line of Jane's strong jaw until reaching the cleft on her chin. Jane couldn't hold a small moan. "Neither this reaction." Maura lifted herself again, waiting for Jane to open the eyes she had closed to the sensations, before she craned her neck forward to capture Jane's lips in a loving kiss. "I do want you, Jane, and I do need you, don't you ever mistake that… But I can handle delayed gratification, and I think we will both benefit from it…" Maura added in a sultry voice, before sliding down Jane's body until she could rest her head comfortably on the curve of Jane's neck and shoulder and they both fell asleep with their limbs mixed together.
Again there were no nightmares that night, for none of them.
For a change, Jane woke up first. She was already dreading the idea of having to leave in a few hours. This newfound closeness was easily addicting. Waiting for two weeks until seeing Maura again would be a hard exercise of Jane's patience. But she was glad Maura had decided to try being a full-time writer experience from DC. They had been apart long enough. More than one year. Jane couldn't wait.
She tried to move, but her tangled limbs meant that her movements, as careful and gentle as they were, made Maura stir.
"Shhhhh… Go back to sleep." Jane whispered by Maura's ear.
Maura tightened her hold.
"Stay. Just a little longer." Maura mumbled, her lips moving and kissing the warm skin on Jane's neck.
Jane settled back with a chuckle, holding Maura tightly.
"It will be hard not to fall asleep and wake up with you…" Maura sighed.
"Tell me about it…" Jane again kissed the crown of Maura's head. "These will be the longest two weeks of my life…"
Maura chuckled in response.
"But I already feel like a bad influence… It is almost 10AM and you are asking to stay in bed…" Jane teased.
Maura looked sleepily at the clock: "10AM already? I slept like a rock."
"Me too. No nightmares."
"No, not one. You are my best medicine." Maura offered, and Jane chuckled.
"Is it wrong I don't want to leave bed? Except that I am starving!"
Maura laughed.
"Being honest, I am hungry too… What do you say we get up and choose a nice quiet place to have brunch?"
"Hmmm, sounds like a great plan!"
Sunday went by too fast for their taste. They had brunch in a quiet place, overlooking one of the city's many parks.
"At what time do you need to go to the airport?"
"I have just my carry on, so if I leave at 3PM it is more than enough."
"Does that give us still some time together back home?"
"It does." Jane smiled gently.
They cuddled in the sofa, kissing as if tomorrow would never come. When Jane's alarm rang, she planted a kiss on Maura's lips and stood.
"I will drive you there."
"Are you sure? I can take a cab…"
"And miss the chance to spend a little longer with you? No way… Go say bye to your mother, I will be waiting for you in the car."
Jane stopped by her mother's guesthouse, and was hugged and smooched before going to the car.
Maura stopped by the "kiss & fly" space, Jane having already checked-in through her phone, and they made good use of the name of the area.
"I don't want to go." Jane admitted.
"I don't want you to go." Maura leaned her forehead against Jane's. "But you have work to do. And I will join you in two weeks."
Jane hugged Maura tightly, placed a final loving kiss on her lips, and crossed the street to the terminal. She turned to wave from the door, before rushing inside not to miss her flight.
