Chapter 46

Jane turned off her alarm as soon as she heard it. Maura was half draped over her torso, and Jane smiled, fighting sleep.

Careful not to wake Maura up, Jane rolled sideways, covering Maura quickly to replace her body warmth, before Jane headed to the bathroom for her morning wake up shower.

She came back on her underwear to change quietly into her work clothes, and only when she turned around to leave the bedroom, she noticed Maura was awake and quietly observing her.

"Sneaky, Dr. Isles…" Jane said, blushing.

Maura smiled at Jane with hooded eyes. "A girl can dream, can't she?"

Jane shook her head, and leaned forward to plant a kiss on Maura's lips.

"Go back to sleep, it is too early…"

Maura didn't go back to sleep, though. The image of Jane's body cladded only in underwear was burned in her retina. She heard Jane quick shadow of a breakfast, and included in her list for a routine to be up early and ensure Jane would eat something nutritional before leaving the apartment for work.

After Maura gave up trying to go back to sleep, she took a shower, and smiled to herself when she opened the fridge. All things she liked for breakfast were there. Jane had left a place arranged for her with a mug, a bowl, cutlery and a napkin, with a small, folded card. 'Good morning to you… If you need ANYTHING, call me… Love, J."

Maura ate her breakfast, did the dishes, and moved to unpack.

When she opened the doors to the closet, her eyes immediately welled in tears. She saw Jane had pushed all of her own things to a little corner, leaving all the space to her. Maura opened her bags and hanged her clothes and stored her shoes. She then moved to the bathroom and again was touched by the space Jane had made for her, quickly storing her toiletries and all her things.

Since Jane had left everything set up, unpacking was really easy. By lunch time, Maura was done. She prepared a quick lunch for herself with the groceries she knew Jane had bought with her in mind – unless Jane had suddenly learned to prepare and appreciate quinoa or kale.

And then, after lunch, Maura decided to try her hand at writing. She moved her laptop to the small desk Jane had placed in the living room, and powered it on.

Maura was always impressed with herself. She had not faced writer's block once – except when she tried poetry. She saw the page, and she would always have something to write about. She had multiple stories going on at the same time. She was not sure if any of them would take it any further. But she never felt she was running out of ideas. Today was no different.

Maura let her fingers fly through the keyboard, the images and phrases pouring from her fingertips. She always proofread only after she was done. When she felt the flow of inspiration slowing down, she realized she had been writing for over three hours. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Maura stood to grab some water and stretch, taking the computer to the kitchen counter where she could proofread while standing up.

She almost spit her water out: yes, she had written in a flow for over three hours without interruption. But instead of one of her mystery stories, this was a hot and steamy piece of fiction with a haven haired beauty. Maura first chuckled, then laughed at herself. She had just proved she couldn't take Jane out of her mind. Not that she wanted to. She blamed the early morning view of Jane in underwear again.

Maura left the computer by the office desk when she heard Jane unlocking the door.

"Hello Agatha Christie!" Jane teased, locking the door behind her. "How was your day?" she inquired, leaving her backpack by the door before bringing Maura flush with her and kissing her deeply.

"Very productive…" Maura replied, after they broke the kiss. "Yours?"

"Very predictable. Thank God it's Friday!" Jane chuckled, moving to the bedroom to change. "Oh, I see you unpacked."

"You made it very easy for me, Jane, thank you!" Maura had followed her, and was by the door while Jane changed from her street clothes into sweatpants and a t-shirt, her back to Maura.

"No problem. Did everything you brought fit in the space I opened for you? I can squeeze my things more if needed."

"There was plenty of space. You didn't need to rearrange everything you own."

"I want this experiment to work, Maura."

"Well, I don't need space for my clothes to prove I can be a full-time writer." Maura teased, tilting her head, provoking Jane to say out loud which experiment she was referring to.

Jane had the decency to blush. "Hmmm… Well… There is also the side of the experiment of us sharing a space. I… have never been really good sharing space with someone else. I really want this to work…"

Maura let her off the hook, approaching her and kissing her.

"I know… Me too…"

They ordered delivery while they set up the table for them to eat, and then ate talking and discussing about their living arrangements.

"Did you have any time to write at all today?"

"Yes! You made it so easy for me to unpack that I was fully done before lunch. I wrote the entire afternoon!"

"Wow, that is promising… Can I read what you wrote?"

Jane had been Maura's beta reader, and Maura realized the trap she was into.

"Hmmm…." She blushed, unable to lie.

"What is it, Maura?" Jane furrowed her brows. "You don't need to show me if you don't want to..."

"It is not that… You know that I write just letting the story flow…"

"Yes, it is hypnotic to watch while you write." Jane had watched it unfold, fascinated, during their month in Paris before Jane moved to DC.

"Well… Hmmm…. Today, when I finished writing with the flow and began to proofread… I realized I had not written a piece of mystery…" Maura blushed even further.

Jane raised her eyebrows.

"What did you write?"

Maura realized she had nothing to lose. She made her decision, stood up, picked up the computer and placed it on Jane's lap.

"I will brush my teeth and will be back in a few."

Jane was puzzled, but shrugged her shoulders and directed her eyes to the open window in Maura's computer screen.

Jane began reading, and soon was muttering under her breath: "Holly shit." She continued reading, feeling a flush spread through her chest and a blush creep through her cheeks. Maura came back quietly from the bathroom and kept observing Jane's reactions to her writing.

Jane exhaled, realizing she was panting slightly, biting her bottom lip and raising her eyes, just to find Maura still leaning against the living room door observing her carefully.

"This was… hot…" Jane stuttered, blinking hard.

"Do you think it is fair to say I could not take you off my mind today?" Maura asked, sheepishly.
