Chapter 51
Jane turned off her alarm when it first rang that Monday morning. She was not looking forward to spending the day away from Maura. She felt like they had been dancing around each other for so long that now that they could be together in every conceivable way, they could not get enough of each other.
Jane smiled to herself, moving quietly to the shower. She knew Maura mentioned wanting to get up and prepare breakfast for both of them, and having breakfast with Jane before Jane left. But Jane didn't have the heart to wake her up, she was sleeping so peacefully and there was no reason for her to wake up that early.
But Jane should know better. When she came out of the bathroom and was dressing for the day, she noticed her bed was made, and she smelled coffee, following the aroma to the kitchen, where Maura was cooking barefoot, her body clad only on a silk robe.
Maura smiled brightly over her shoulder when she heard Jane approaching her. "Good morning."
Jane kissed her deeply, her hands roaming through silk. "Good morning…"
Maura chuckled. "Behave yourself, Agent Rizzoli. We don't want you to be late for work, or me to get burned while I prepare our breakfast!"
"Absolutely… I would never be a hazard to you…" Jane chuckled back, kissing the crook of Maura's neck and inhaling her scent before moving to put the place matches by the tiny kitchen table, before she moved to help Maura with the plates.
"This was delicious!" Jane admitted, after she was finished, standing up to place her things on the dishwasher.
"Go get ready so you are not late…" Maura gently placed a hand on her back. "I got this."
Jane came back ready to leave, stopping for an unhurried kiss. "I will see you later… Have a good day and please call me if you need anything, okay?"
"Don't worry, Jane, everything will be fine here. And you have a great day at work – try not to beat any of your training agents on the head…" Maura chuckled, pushing her towards the door.
Maura set the dishwasher, showered, and did her morning yoga.
Then, she sat to work. She wrote for about an hour and a half, when she got stuck because of a piece of info that she didn't know by heart. So, she paused for research. She went through a few online publications and eBooks to get the information she needed to get details on, and made her notes.
And then it was already lunch time, so Maura moved to prepare a salad and grilled salmon for her. After lunch, she emptied and reloaded the dishwasher, and turned on the robot vacuum and mop after reading its instructions. Then she sat back to work.
The afternoon was super productive, she worked in two different stories until the flow of ideas dried up. She stood to inspect the work of the robot and thought it was fairly decent, especially considering the noise had not bothered her at all, and that the house looked totally in order.
There was still time before Jane would be home, so Maura decided to prepare something nice for their dinner, opting for something simple but nutritious, quiche and some salad.
Jane opened the door to the delicious smell coming from the kitchen.
"I am home!" she announced, placing her backpack on its proper place, before moving to find Maura, who was finishing washing the salad.
"How was your day?" Jane asked, kissing Maura unhurriedly.
"Very productive, Jane! Yours?"
"It was calm. Young cadets this week. Hmmmm, something smells delicious… And it is not only you…"
"Did you have lunch?"
"Yes, in the Agency cafeteria. But something smells like heaven…"
"I tried a quiche, not sure if it will turn out good. Go get changed and it should be ready for us to eat."
Jane changed into sweatpants and t-shirt before coming back to setup the dining table.
"Maura, this is fabulous!" Jane praised.
"No no no, you go to the sofa, I got this." Jane instructed when they were finished. She would do the dishes from dinner at least, it was the minimum. "You should not spend time cleaning up the house, by the way!"
"It was not me, it was a robot vacuum and mop." Maura chuckled, pointing to the contraption in the corner of the room to Jane.
"Really?"
"Yes, it does the work on its own, and its noise is too low to bother me at all."
"I like the way you think, Dr. Isles."
"Will you please read what I wrote today?"
"Of course… Was it a mystery? Or another hot steamy piece of fiction?" Jane inquired, a smug look on her face.
Maura threw one of the sofa pillows at her, chuckling. "You are so full of yourself… Today it was only mystery…"
Maura handed Jane the laptop, while Maura opened her iPad to check on the news.
Jane, as usual, asked questions and provided feedback, and it was always entertaining because their discussions about the crimes polished the contents.
"Are you comfortable to work on that desk? Is there anything you need?"
"Stop worrying, Jane. Everything is perfectly fine…" Maura cuddled against Jane in the sofa.
They placed on a documentary that Maura chose on tv, since it was not game night, and just enjoyed each other's company and proximity.
And that simple routine became a pattern.
Maura felt happier, more relaxed and more productive than she had ever felt in her life. Healthier too. She was eating better, exercising more, sleeping better, and what was more important: without the stress, guilty and pressure that real-life crime always put on her.
And she could see Jane looked even better than what Maura had seen in the previous year. Yes, Jane had been way more relaxed since moving to DC, the stress and pressure and odd hours and dangers of the job had not been there for more than a year now. But in the past two weeks Maura knew they had introduced a better pattern of eating, sleeping and exercise.
Bottomline was that both were benefiting from their closeness in all possible levels. Both were extremely happy. And the experiment, so far, had been a resounding success.
