I own nothing to this book series. It all belongs to Phyllis Reynolds Naylor!
Hope you enjoy!
Eddie POV:
After the Hatfords left, I just sat in my room. I was still thinking about how Jake kissed me.
I can't believe he actually kissed me... and that I liked it. I mean come on, it's Jake Hatford. He was once my enemy.
But can once enemies be more than just... friends?
I'm really confused and it's not helping me. Life doesn't make any sense. One day you hate each other, then the next you're kissing each other.
I don't want my life to be that way, but that's the way it will always be. No matter how much I don't want it to be.
I need to talk to Jake about the kiss. Even if he tries to avoid that certain topic. I need to know where we stand. I hope he likes me the way I like him.
Caroline POV:
My alarm clock went off as I woke up. All I could hear was Kelly Clarkson's voice saying, "Here I am once again, I'm torn into pieces."
Nothing better than waking up to an amazing song. I'm a little worried about Eddie, however. I know for a fact that she never went to sleep last night.
She's probably still thinking about the kiss. I don't think any of us can forget that.
I mean, I know Eddie likes Jake. But I don't know if Jake likes Eddie.
I mean it was a truth or dare thing, but I swear, I really think Jake does like Eddie.
I walked downstairs to kitchen and got some breakfast.
"Hey mom. Where's the milk?" I asked, shutting the fridge door back.
"Oh, I forgot. Sorry, honey, we don't have any." Mom said. "You can probably ask the boys if you can borrow some of theirs."
"Ok. I will." I said, putting on my coat and flats. I walked next door and knocked.
Peter came to the door. "Oh, hi, Caroline. You want to come in?" He asked.
"Yes, please." I said, as he opened the door wider. I stepped in. "Peter, do y'all have any milk?"
"Yeah. You want some cereal?" He asked, walking into the kitchen.
"Yeah, sure." I said. "Say, where's Jake?"
"He's still sleeping." Peter said, quite unfazed.
"Oh, ok. Well, I'll go wake him up for y'all." I said, heading upstairs to Jake and Josh's bedroom. I opened the door and saw Jake, all snuggled up with his covers.
"Jake! Wake up!"
"What? I'm up." He snorted, then opened his eyes. "Caroline? What are you doing in here?"
"I need to talk to you." I said. "Do you or do you not like Eddie? Because I know for a fact, my sister did not sleep a wink last night."
Jake blushed and started trying to hide his smile. "Ok, so that tells me all I really need to know." I said.
"Huh? What does?" He asked, trying to look innocent.
"Don't play dumb with me, Jake. I saw that little smile." I responded. "I'm not stupid."
"Fine. Yeah, I like Eddie." He admitted. "But I don't know where we stand right now."
"Well, that's exactly how she feels. So you really need to talk to her." I said. "You can do it this afternoon or sometime today at school. I don't really care, just do it soon."
I walked back downstairs and ate the cereal that Peter made for me. "Thanks, Peter. It was great." I said, ruffling his hair. "You're welcome, Caroline." Peter said, grinning.
I walked back to my house, so that way I could get ready for school. Today's Friday. So Monday are the tryouts for the play. I can't wait.
"Hey, Beth. How's Eddie doing?" I asked, stepping into the bathroom all three of us share.
"Dare you ask?" Beth said, grinning. "She has huge eye bags. I feel bad."
"Well, I talked to Jake this morning and told him that he needed to talk to Eddie." I said, then I looked around to see if Eddie was nearby. "He also told me that he likes her!"
Beth's eyes widened. "Did he really admit that to you? Like right out in the open?" She asked.
"Yeah, pretty much. I mean I told him I knew that he liked her. I mean it's not that hard to see." I said.
"Good morning, guys." I heard Eddie say.
"How're you doing?" I asked, smiling at her.
"Okay, just a little tired." Eddie said, smiling weakly.
"Yeah, I heard you moving around all night." Caroline said.
"I'm sorry. Did I keep you both up all night?" Eddie asked, sounding sorry.
"No, I promise, you didn't. I heard it for about 20 or 30 minutes then fell back asleep." Beth said.
"Ok, good." She said, sighing. "I'm so tired."
"We know why, but it's ok. It happens to everyone. I bet it even happened to Jake." I said, smiling at her.
"I doubt it." Eddie said, laughing.
Josh POV:
We walked to school with the girls. Jake and Eddie stayed far behind us, and I think they were talking about last night.
But Eddie looks so tired; I doubt that she slept at all. I know for a fact that Jake didn't.
He was up and down all night, doing nothing. All he really did since we got home last night was pace around our room.
Eddie, Jake, and I walked to our first period class: Geometry.
Our teacher, Mrs. Marcus, walked in five minutes later.
"Everyone please take your seats, so we can get started." She said.
I opened my textbook and looked over at Eddie. She was asleep, with her head on her desk top.
I snapped my fingers. "Eddie!" I hissed in her direction.
She woke up with a start and looked around. Then her eyes settled on me. "What did you want?" She asked, trying to look innocent.
"I know you're tired, but if Mrs. Marcus catches you, she'll send you to Principal Loughton's office... again." I said. "I'm just trying to help you."
"I know. Thanks." She said, smiling at me.
After class was over, Jake and I went to our lockers. "Man, Jake, Eddie almost got sent to the principal's office again." I said, putting my geometry textbook inside my locker.
"What? Why?" He asked, grabbing out his English textbook.
"Well, just like you, she stayed up all night. And she almost fell asleep in class. You know how strict Mrs. Marcus is." I said.
"You're right. You really helped her out." Jake said. "Well, I'll see you later. I've got English."
"Wait!" I called out before he walked away. "What's up?" He asked.
"Did you talk to Eddie, you know, about last night?" I asked.
"Yeah, on the way to school." He said, grinning.
"And?" I asked.
"And she's my girlfriend now." Jake said, smirking at me.
You best believe my mouth fell straight open. "Wait, what?" I asked. "You're serious?"
"Um, yeah. I'm her boyfriend." Jake said. "She'll probably sit with me at lunch. See ya."
Well, at least he finally told her, I thought as I walked to my second class.
Peter POV:
As soon as I walked into my classroom, everyone started laughing at me.
"Why're you laughing at me?" I asked.
A girl in the front row giggled and pointed down. Down at my pants. Oh no. What's happened?!
I looked down and I found out that someone had poured water on the front of my pants. It made it look like I wet myself. This is the worst day ever.
But what made it worse was that my teacher, Mrs. Larkin, asked me this. "Peter, dear, do we need to call your mom and ask her to bring you some pants?"
Oh, how everyone laughed after she said that. Sixth graders are brutal.
I pretty much sat alone during lunch. But then a pretty brunette came and sat down next to me. "Hi, I'm Emily Smith." She said, smiling at me.
"Why are you being nice to me? Everyone has been so mean." I said, confused.
"I'm not a normally mean person. I'm sorry bout what happened in class today. 11 year olds are brutal." Emily said. "Now, what's your name?"
"My name is Peter Hatford." I said.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Peter." She said, shaking my hand.
