Chapter 8: Attack of the Reds

Mount Justice; September 22nd, 18:43 EDT

Red Tornado and Aqualad are in the Training Center of the Cave. "So, you have told no one else of this Mole?" Red Tornado asks Aqualad.

"I cannot be sure one exists. And if it does, if the Team is being betrayed from within, I must investigate without tipping my hand. Legend is the only other one on the team that knows." Kaldur, as contemplative as always, still looks to Red Tornado. "But perhaps I should tell Batman?"

"Generally, the Batman expects the Team to handle its own problems, but the decision is yours." Red remains a mediator, nothing more. "I will return after Monitor Duty on the Watchtower."

"I thought you were exempt from monitor duty since becoming our den mother." Kaldur says, confused, as Red Tornado types in his Zeta Code and powers up the first tube.

Red Tornado turns back to Aqualad. "I agreed to cover for Green Arrow. He has an interpersonal event with Black Canary. A 'hot date'."

Kaldur ignores Green Arrow's bad habit and contemplates his dilemma further.

Artemis makes her way down an alley in Gotham under the cover of night, already in her costume, to an out of order phone booth.

"Artemis?" Robin asks, startling the blonde. She nearly jumps out of her skin with a gasp. "Robin! I uh…" she tries to come up with a good excuse.

"How random that you're in Gotham City, instead of Star City where your Uncle Green Arrow lives?" Robin says as if he knows something.

"I'm-uh, here to see my cousin. She was in the state spelling bee. Here… In Gotham City." She said, stumbling over her words. "C-O-O-L. Did she W-I-N?" Robin asks, purposefully spelling out the words. Artemis just looked annoyed at the boy wonder. "N-O." "D-A-R-N." Robin responds, unaffected. "Yeah." She huffs. "Let's just get to the cave."

Robin bows and turns theatrical. "Ladies first." "Your town, you go." Artemis says sharply, putting her hands on her hips. The Boy Wonder shrugs and opens the doors with a creak.

As they got inside, Robin suddenly dodged a fire blast and coughed seeing smoke. "Artemis! You alright!?" He asked as Artemis jumped out of the smoke.

"Yeah. Who the heck's attacking us!?" Artemis asked/yelled as she shot arrows into the smoke before more fireballs came at them. "I don't know, but we need to retreat and form a plan." Robin said before looking to his left. "The back exit!" They ran to the exit only to have water crash from the exit. "Move!" Robin said before Artemis shot three arrows that exploded in ice stopping the water.

They ran into the gym trying to contact the rest of the team. "I'm not getting anything on our earpieces, or link." Artemis said running into the showers as a flaming tornado came at them. "And my link to the Bat Cave is down too!" Robin said turning on the water before the pipes burst flooding the room.

Robin placed a bomb on the wall and made a hole for them to escape through. They ran into the kitchen, and Artemis looked around. "The vent!" She jumped over and opened the vent. "Come on!" "I'm coming, just downloading the blueprints." Robin replied running over as he heard footsteps. As they crawled in the vents, Robin directed them on where to go before coming to the boiler room.

"This way." They ran downstairs as a female figure dropped down through the ceiling covered in fire, making everything over-heat. "Crap, that's not good." Robin said running to the other side of the room. He looked at his holographic screen then looked around the room. "There should be a vent here."

Artemis found the vents opening on the floor and jumped down. Robin left a bomb on a tank before dropping them down. After crawling for a moment, Robin stopped near a security box and connected his computer to it. Robin brought up four different videos, one showing the rest of their teammates talking in the hanger.

M'gann and Conner were kissing in front of the hallway that lead to the rest of the cave. Sphere whirs as it rolls into view, interrupting them. M'gann chuckled. "Someone's jealous."

"Maybe." Conner admits, looking down at Sphere. "Or maybe-" "Hey guys!" Wally's voice calls, heading up the stairs with an overstuffed sandwich in his hand, followed by Legend who was finishing off his own sandwich.

"You two sure spend a lot of time working on his bike together. Obviously, you need the Wall-man's expert help." "Expert? You needed my help to even work the stove to make that masterpiece." Legend said with a chuckle.

Conner and M'gann share a look and a smile before patting Sphere. "Oh, Hello Megan. Legend, we actually wanted to talk to you." M'gann said suddenly. "Really, what's up?" He said walking up and patting sphere who beeped in response.

"Well, we've been talking with everyone else about giving you a name." Legend's Eyes widen in excitement. "That's awesome, what did you guys come up with?" He asked, his eyes bugged out, ready to hear what they came up with. M'gann, Conner, and Wally all looked at each other, smiled and nodded. They then look at Legend who was grinning like a madman.

"Well, If you accept it, we would love to give you the name… Joshua Jordan." The room was silent for several seconds, the others looked worried as they believe that he didn't like the name. Legend looked at the floor, Conner could barely hear him breathing.

"Legend are you-" Superboy gets cut off as Legend grabbed him, M'gann, and Wally in a bone crushing bear hug. "I LOVE IT!" Legend, now named Joshua Jordan, shouted in joy at the top of his lungs. "We're glad to hear it, but… can you put us down, please, we need air." Wally choked out between gasps.

Joshua, put them down and chuckled while rubbing the back of his head. "sorry." "it's alright, I'd be just as happy if I we're in your shoes." Wally says while catching his breath, they all share a laugh. Suddenly the room started to shake and before anyone could say anything else, a large wave came from the exit and took out the camera.

They do seem pretty user unfriendly." Robin comments, trying to stop Artemis from panicking more than she already is. "Don't joke. They-" she snaps but is cut off.

"Attention, Robin and Artemis." The make Red announces over the Cave's system. "You have exactly 10 minutes to surrender, or the lives of your teammates will be extinguished." The two share a worried look.

Fire sizzles and surrounds a cage that an unconscious M'gann and a worse for wear Kaldur who was holding her. Sphere beeps as it can't move from the wall it was stuck inside of. The fire android walked up to the cage, her eyes glowed red, and the cage burns hotter.

Meanwhile, Wally and Conner fight to stay afloat in a pool of grey goop they were stuck in. Joshua on the other hand was stuck in a block of black metal, in a hole that was slowly filling with water, it was already up to the hips and still rising. The water android rises up from the cave's pool, raising a hand to flood the dryland. Overtaking the stairs, and quickly rising up by Conner and Wally.

"9 minutes and 45 seconds remain." The male red announced. Both Robin and Artemis hear the announcement as they run down a hallway.

"Eight minutes." "We can access the hangar from here." Robin tells Artemis but turns further over his shoulder when a distant sound catches his attention. When he stops and Artemis has spent enough time with the boy to know to listen to his Instincts. Gasping as water rushes through the room they both were just in, and down into the hallway. "Or not."

"Will you please stop saying that?" Artemis' voice cracks as she turns to start running again. As the water surges, they both get swept off their feet by the force of the water. Artemis losing her arrows out of her Quiver as the water makes both of them tumble.

Robin grabs a rebreather out of his utility belt, breathing easily as he swims to Artemis. He helped her calm down before giving her the rebreather. Looking over his shoulder to try and keep them from being swept away.

One of the Reds grabbed Artemis by the ankle. She gasps, losing the rebreather, as he tries to drag her away from Robin. The Boy Wonder is quick to swim after her, as she hits the male Android in the head with her bow. Robin swims just over Artemis' left shoulder to hit male Android in the eye with a birdarang.

He grabs onto Artemis as he fires his grapple to the far wall. Leaving a line of disks that started to beep before android got thrown. Robin and Artemis break the surface of the water gasping for air. "Look out!" Kid yells from a distance.

The two looked up before taking a deep breath and diving back under the surface to dodge another fireball. They surfaced once more only to have to dive under again to avoid her second shot.

Kid and Conner look around as the fem-droid continued to search for their two other teammates. Robin and Artemis surfaced less than two feet from Kid. "You guys okay?" Robin asks lowly.

"Forget us." Conner snaps as quietly as he could. "Help M'gann and Joshua." Bringing their attention to the fire cage on the outlook and the hole next to it. "Aqualad, is she-" Artemis can't bring herself to finish her question.

"She is unconscious." Kaldur answered weakly. "I fear that she, that we cannot survive much longer. Same for Joshua, he is about to be submerged." His voice was low and breaking, showing just how much trouble he is in as well.

Robin and Artemis are forced to duck below the surface again as more fire is thrown at them. The two make a break for it while under the water. Coming up by the stairs and Sphere.

The male Android comes out of the water, blocking the two from the water while the fem-droid landed at the top of the stairs to block their way up.

Artemis is quick to pull an arrow from her quiver but turns to Robin worried. "I'm almost out of arrows." Her voice mostly calm with only a slight edge to it. "Distract her, now." Robin snaps as he heads down the stairs.

Artemis fires her special tipped arrow at the fem-droid, the tip exploded, shrouding her in smoke and making it hard to tell if anything actually happened. She soon walked out of the smoke as fire formed wave behind her, mimicking hair.

Robin heads down the stairs, throwing disks at the male android, they just bounced off. One ricocheted and came close to hitting Kid's head and the other going into the water with Legend right as it reached his mouth. "Whoa!" The speedster said in surprise.

As the male Android raised his hands, he formed two columns of water, Robin and Artemis backed away from their respective enemies. Waiting for the moment the two are about to strike before diving into the water. The water and fire met and clashed, canceling each other out.

Robin and Artemis dove deep into the water. Where Robin rips off a vent cover. He let Artemis in first as she makes her way to the first set of vertical pipes and followed them up.

Both break the surface high in the mountain and took in big gulps of air as they pulled themselves out of the water and into the dry vent. "Six minutes." The male Android announced. "What do we do now?" Artemis asks worriedly.

"We save them." Robin answered, but even with his mask on the anger and edge are clear, he's not as calm as his voice implies. "That's how it works."

"Maybe that's how it's supposed to work, but those robots already took out our five Superpowered friends." Artemis snaps, her emotions coming out fully.

(skipping this part because it the same as canon.)

The male Android walks across the outlook, coming to stand beside the fem-droid. "Four minutes." In a higher hallway, Robin and Artemis open a panel that the Boy Wonder lands on silently. From here he can overlook the scene without being seen.

"Okay, make with the distraction." He tells Kid through the comm. "Hey, Red Tomato! Who's your girlfriend, Red Onion?" Kid yells, Conner looks confused but catches on easy enough. "Yeah, and by the way, worst death trap ever." He shouted. This gains the robot's attention. "We can escape any time we want. I can vibrate my molecules out of here before your copper brains can count to two!" Kid taunts.

"Cover me." Robin tells Artemis as he hooks his grapple line to the wall and swings over the generator. Artemis notched her last arrow and took aim.

"Yeah, and you can't drown a Kryptonian. You dumb bots, we don't breathe air." Conner bluffs. Kid laughs obnoxiously as Robin disconnected his cable.

"And Ms. Martian? I can't believe you're buying her act." Kid continues as Robin pulls open the panel and sets the device inside. Robin then connected his HoloGlove.

"Rerouting power now." He tells them lowly. Conner is quick to pick up. "Yeah, you know how hot it gets in the caves on Mars? That cage is just making her homesick." Robin looks over his shoulder, before glaring at the screen. "It's not working."

"And Legend, you're just making him to bored to try escaping. He's just sleeping down there." Conner gripes. "Duh!" Kid laughs again. Robin sees the problem: a small gap between the two components. "The circuit's incomplete." He puts the connecting cord back into his glove. "I need something conductible. A piece of metal or-"

"Robin, look out!" Artemis screams, just before a massive wave overtakes him and the platform he's on. Artemis takes aim, only to be knocked off course by a narrowly missed fireball from the fem-droid.

The arrow flies right past the two robots as the female tries to hit Artemis again, but the archer is quick to duck out of the way. Going for another arrow, only to find her quiver empty. She turns and heads back into the vent. Barely avoiding the fem-droid's fireball that nicks her boots.

She gets to a part of the vent that has been torn open from the current events. Looking through it she can see what's going on. Watching as the male robots brings Robin to the outlook, still suspended in water. He's not fighting, and he also looks like he's not breathing.

She gasps and stumbles back. The sight of her friends in danger flash before her eyes. Joshua, as the water gets closer to overtaking him. Kaldur and M'gann trapped in the fire cage. Wally and Conner struggling to stay afloat. And Robin, still suspended in water.

"No. No, no, no." That is the only thing she can mumble as she curls into a fetal position. "No, no, no." she almost sobs. The water drops Robin onto the outlook, but he doesn't even cough when he's freed from the water.

The two robots look at him, while now Kaldur and M'gann are both unconscious. Wally and Conner have to keep their chins up to avoid the goop as Sphere beeps and Legend starts to drown.

"I surrender." Artemis murmurs. "If I'm gonna die, I want to die with the others." Then something dawns on her. "But if I find a way out, out of the cave, out of the mountain, I can get help, call the League." The vent becomes too steep and she slides down. Falling from a ceiling into Wally's trophy room.

"Three minutes." Artemis sighs as she sits up. "Oh, who am I kidding? Best I can do is hide." She mutters as she rubs her arms. "I hope the League finds me before the Reds do."

She looks up at the trophy shelf, she stood up and headed right for Cheshire's mask. "I know you'd understand." She says while holding the mask. A flash appeared.

(Flashback)

A poster in Artemis' room is almost impossible to see in the dark. "We have to keep this family from falling apart." Young Artemis says in begging tone. Her sister looks over her shoulder for less then a second then turns back around. "What am I forgetting?" Younger Cheshire asked herself out loud. "Toothbrush, duh. Knew I was forgetting something." She hits her head, just like how M'gann does.

"Dad will come after you." Artemis says as Her sister leaves the bathroom. "Let him." Cheshire says smugly, as she zips her bag. "I'll disappear, like the cheshire cat." She puts on her hat and grabs her bag, heading to the door. Before she left, she turned to glance at Artemis. "You should get out too. I'd let you go with me, but you'd just slow me down."

"Someone has to be here when mom gets out." Artemis says with a surprising amount of conviction for a child her age. "Haven't you learned anything? In this family, it's every girl for herself." Cheshire closes the door between her and Artemis. The blonde falls to her knees, but only hugs the bear tighter. Not crying.

(Flashback end)

"That might be true about our family… but I've found a new family." Her voice was filled with determination. "One minute." Startled out of her thought she's quick to put the mask back where it was. What's next to it catches her eye though.

The elevator door opens, Artemis has her bow in her hand and an arrow in her quiver, but doesn't look ready to attack. The Red's instantly turned to her.

"I surrender, stop the clock." She tells them, her voice still broken. Kaldur stirs from unconsciousness, looking at her as she walks closer. Artemis sees him, but glances at Robin, then Wally and Conner as the goop they were in has now hardened. She offers her bow to the Reds.

The male Android held out a hand for her to give it to him, she adjusts her hold on it before suddenly springing into action.

She kicked him in the face and landing on the fem-droid's wrist to push the fire away from her. Flipping backwards and pulling the arrow from her quiver. Lining up the shot across the cave to connect the circuit of the EMP emitter.

When it hit, electricity starts to spark as the reactor started to glow bright blue. Sound warped in waves, shooting out from the device. Everything started shutting down, while the Red's began to spark and spasm before falling to the ground.

Their eyes went dark, the fire dissipated, and the water level dropped. "Kaldur, how's M'gann?" Conner asks worriedly, still stuck in the hole.

He groans as he pushes himself to rest on his right arm. "She is breathing. I believe she will recover. What about Robin and Joshua?"

Artemis drops her bow and skids on her knees beside the Boy Wonder. Cautiously touching his head and chest.

He coughed, getting all of the water out of his lungs. "He- he's breathing too." She said with tears forming in his eyes. Robin continued gasping until his breathing evened out. "Way to get traught." He says with a smile. Relief sinks in as she falls back to a sitting position.

Robin, and Kaldur stand before Wally and Conner who are still encased. M'gann leaning heavily on the Atlantean. Artemis looks down at Joshua who was still encased too and unconscious as the water drained. The now disabled Reds are still laying limp on the ground, while Artemis holds some type of cutter that has no power.

"Figured my only shot was to 'surrender' and pretend to drown before I actually did." Robin says confidently. "Blacked out though." He shrugs. "Yet while you were faking it, I was actually drowning!" Joshua yelled from his hole with irritation.

"M'gann." Conner asks worriedly, taking her hand in his. "I'll be fine." She assures, though her voice isn't as strong as it normally was.

"Will you quit playing with that thing and cut us free already?" Wally demands of Artemis. She gives him a deadpanned look. "It's not working genius. EMP shuts down all machines, remember?"

"All machines present at the time." Red Tornado's voice speaks up as he makes his way across the room, landing beside Wally and Conner. Only when the tornado stops whirring does he continue. "What has occurred?"

"Had a little visit from your family." Robin looks at the Reds, putting his hands on his hips.

"Yeah, your extremely nasty family." Artemis is quick to gripe. "I was not aware I had relations." Tornado remarks. "Where have you been?" Conner demands.

"Monitor duty on the Watchtower." Tornado remarks, making his way over to the other robots. "When it became clear that cave's communications were down, I attempted to investigate, but your Zeta Tubes were also nonfunctional." He kneeled down beside his fellow androids. "I transported to Providence and proceeded here."

Sphere starts to whir, catching his attention. Managing get to himself free. "Hey boy." Conner greets and gets beeps in return. The laser cutter turns on in Artemis' hands.

"The pulse wore off." Kid and Robin say in unison. Red Tornado reaches out to the fem-droid, and a zap connects their fingers as her eyes light back up.

Red Tornado's eyes glowed in return. Before turning towards the Team and using a tornado to raise himself up, and aimed two at the team.

Artemis drops the laser cutter, clutching her neck. Kaldur drops M'gann as he did the same, Robin stumbled, as he lost his breath.

Conner and Wally can't fight back and slumped to the floor. Finally, Artemis falls to her knees. "Can't… breathe." Watching as Robin fell over before her own world went black, the last thing she hears is Joshua screaming to know what's going on.

"Artemis, Artemis, can you hear me?" She groans as she opens her eyes to find Superman looking down at her. "I'm alright." She grunts as he helps her stand up.

Before her are Green Arrow, looking at her, Batman, who is talking to Robin, Flash, who is using the a tool she had to help Kid and Conner out, Atom who is melting Joshua out, Martian Manhunter, who is kneeling beside a still sitting M'gann, Black Canary, who is watching over them, and finally Aquaman, who is speaking to Kaldur.

"What happened here?" Superman demands. "What happened?!" Artemis demands back. "The Reds happened. Tornado and his-" She stops trying to figure out a way to describe them when she realizes something's missing. "Wait, where are they?"

"Gone." Only then does Robin turn towards her. "All three of them." He is clearly beating himself up over it, but the malice in his voice is obvious. "Gone."
