~Chapter 14 New Accommodations~
The mission to the Netherrealm was deemed a success despite Quan Chi's escape, four revenants had been restored to life; Scorpion, Sub-zero, Jax and Jade, the four of them are on rest and are being examined to see if there are any lingering effects from the process, Mileena was happy to learn that Ashrah and Sareena were okay, however she noticed how quiet the latter had been after the mission, not knowing what to do about the demon, she decided to give her some privacy until she wanted to talk.
Mileena however was bored, despite her injuries having been healed by Raiden, she was being told to get rest because she "lost more than a safe amount of blood" she sighed, looking around her room in the base for the last time, she smiled knowing she was officially moving out.
Lewis had her filing in all kinds of paperwork in between her training sessions with Kenshi, apparently these were for some sort of citizenship in the 'United States', she had to learn a lot about how the government worked and how she was supposedly a ward of said government.
Shaking the thoughts from her mind she walked over to the foot of the room's bed, reaching out with both hands she grabbed her father's hammer and steadily lifted it from the floor, bringing it to eye level with a smile in her eyes.
She still didn't understand why it was easier to lift now, it was still pretty heavy, but she wasn't going to question it too much, she lent the weapon over her right shoulder and grabbed her pink boots with her free hand.
With the last of her belongings in hand she turned to leave, a small part of her still couldn't believe this was happening despite the nearly constant reassurances, she shook her head to dispel the negative thoughts 'Mileena, I fully meant it when I gave you the offer and I fully mean it now' Lewis's words echoed in her mind for a moment dispelling her doubts.
"Best not keep her waiting" she mumbled, wondering what living with Lewis would be like, she left the room and shut the door for possibly the last time.
Mileena was not pouting and anyone that said otherwise was a liar, the chuckle from the woman next to her was not improving her mood "shut up" she grumbled, glaring out the passenger seat window.
"I'm sorry you can't bring the hammer home with you Mileena" Lewis said awkwardly "but you have to admit it was a little funny"
Mileena thought back to when she tried to place her new weapon into the car they were in, only for the vehicle to tilt to the side and release an ominous creaking sound, with Lewis worried about the car's integrity Mileena was forced to leave the hammer behind at the base.
"It's just that…" Mileena started, trying to find the words "it's just that the hammer is one of the few things I have from Outworld" she stared down at her hands "I know I wasn't there for long and that I don't really have good memories there either" she sighed before looking at Lewis "it's is the place I was... 'born'"
"I'm sorry I laughed" the doctor replied with a small frown "but at the very least you don't have to worry about it going missing" the older woman smiled as she remembered some guy's inability to move the hammer to storage, forcing Mileena to carry it there herself.
"I guess that's okay"
Eventually the two women pulled up outside a tall nondescript building, Lewis parked the car and let Mileena grab her bag from the trunk before heading inside, despite her reluctance the masked girl followed Lewis into the elevator because she refused to "walk all the way up to the sixth floor"
Finishing the short ride in the "Steel deathtrap" as Mileena called it, she followed Lewis down the corridor to a door labelled "6C".
"It may be a little different than what you're used to" Lewis warned "but I want you to try and make yourself comfortable"
Walking through the doorway second, Mileena noticed that the front door led directly into a large room with a black leather couch with a low table covered in paperwork in front of it, at the end of the room was what Mileena could only assume was a kitchen separated by a dining table with enough room to sit three people.
"Come on Mileena" Lewis gestured to follow with a hand wave "I'll show you to your room" the doctor led her over to a door on the right wall of the room with a small bookcase next to it, stepping through revealed a small box corridor with three more doors and cupboard next to the center one.
"So, you've already seen the living room and kitchen" said Lewis before opening the middle door "this is the bathroom and if you need a shower there are towels in the cupboard here, just remember to lock the door if you do"
Moving past Mileena, Lewis tapped the door on the right "This is my room, if I'm inside and you need something, just knock okay?" she explained with a gentle smile before gesturing to the last door left "and finally, go ahead Mileena"
'So this must be my room' she thought to herself, slightly nervous about what was behind the door, said door was just regular wooden door painted white but seemed imposing to her 'It's okay, Lewis wouldn't try to hurt me' taking a deep breath to calm down, Mileena grabbed the handle and pushed the door open.
The room was very basic with cream coloured walls and a light wood floor, however Mileena noticed a set of black draws sitting underneath a window looking across the street, on the wall next to her was a brown wardrobe that clearly didn't match the draws, a little down the wall the door was on was a brown desk with a chair tucked under it, however the main thing that caught her attention was the bed in the corner next to the draws, it was sightly bigger than the bed she had in the Special Forces base, the bottom sheet was black and the pillow and blanket were a dark pink.
Mileena walked into the room slowly, trying to process every last detail, despite how little was actually there, she placed her bag on the draws before sitting down on the bed.
"I'm sorry if you don't like it" Lewis said quietly, instantly catching Mileena's attention "I didn't know what you wanted or if you had any special nee-"
"I love it" she said, interrupting Lewis' rambling.
"You do?"
"Yes" she answered "it's better than the room I had before, and I can't remember Outworld very well…" she trailed off toward the end and looked at the floor.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Lewis asked with concern, only to receive a shaken head "oh… well I'll give you a chance to get used to your new room, I'll cook something special tonight because of the occasion" she chuckled a little when she noticed Mileena's eyes light up slightly at the mention of food.
Mileena watched Lewis leave, shutting the door quietly behind her, reaching down she untied her boots and removed them before laying back in her bed, staring at the ceiling.
Jade sat still in the bed that had been provided to her, lost in thoughts of recent events, she could remember the battle in Quan Chi's fortress with vivid detail and multiple things still left her confused with no answers.
The Edenian's train of thought was derailed when the room's door opened for Sonya to walk in "Hello Jade" she greeted politely "I came to see how you're feeling"
"I'm surprised you came here instead of going to your friend" Jade replied.
"I just came from talking to Jax" said Sonya with an upset frown "I think he'll more professional help than what I could give him" the major shook her head to dismiss the thoughts "anyway, how are you holding up?"
"I feel like I need another shower to remove the stink of Quan Chi's magic from my body" Jade turned to look Sonya in the eyes "If you don't mind, I have some questions of my own"
"Fair enough" she replied leaning against the wall with her arms crossed "what do you want to know?"
"I suppose the first question I want answered is, why was Mileena there with you?"
"Well that's a bit of long story" Sonya sighed "but the quick summary is that when Kabal fled Outworld during the invasion he captured Mileena in the process, after recovering from the injuries I suffered from Sindel I was going to interrogate her about any information she had about Outworld" she paused for a moment "Raiden joined me and we learned that she knew nothing, however she had a rather strong reaction when we told her about Kitana's death"
"Did she celebrate?"
"No, in fact it was the opposite" answered Sonya, taking Jade by surprise "after learning that Kitana died she became completely unresponsive, she didn't talk, didn't move, if we couldn't see her breathing, you'd think she was dead" an uncomfortable look flashed across her eyes "she'd have likely stayed that way if it hadn't been for Kitana attacking the base to reclaim her lost fan, she came across Mileena's cell and nearly beat her to death before I arrived, when she recovered and learned about Kitana's situation she decided she was going to help us"
"Just like that?" Jade asked, clearly confused "you didn't ask her for help? She just offered?"
"Yes, just like that" Sonya answered "I think she needs this, this mission to save Kitana, she hasn't once spoken to me about Outworld"
"This all sounds a little unbelievable" said Jade leaning forward "I mean she was created by Shang Tsung by mixing Kitana's DNA with a Tarkatan's"
"That maybe true but, I'm glad that our first impressions of her were wrong" Sonya replied with small smile "in fact I think she's a good person"
Jade was silent as she leaned back thinking on Sonya's words.
"I have a favour to ask" said Sonya, taking Jade by surprise "from what Kenshi and I can tell, Mileena has some kind of magic ability, we were hoping you could help train her with it"
"You think she has Edenian magic?"
"We don't know, but you might" answered the major "that's why I'm asking, for your help, just think about it okay"
After finally processing this was room was hers she took the time to explore it, looking through the draws and wardrobe revealed a lot of the clothes she looked at in the catalogue with Lewis before going to the Netherrealm.
Thinking that a change of clothes couldn't hurt, she eventually found decided on a pair of pink shorts and a black t-shirt with sleeves that came to her elbows, Mileena was left unsure on what to do with her clothes she just took off.
Before she could come up with an idea, she was startled by a knock at her door "Mileena, dinner is ready" came Lewis's muffled voice "are you awake?"
"Yeah, I'm awake" Mileena answered while walking over to the exit of her room, the moment she opened the door a smell hit her nose that left her salivating, following the doctor out into the main room, the scent grew strong enough for her to sniff the air like a dog.
"Since tonight is special, I decided to make a favourite of mine" she said with a small smile "a steak dinner, just take a seat and I'll put it out"
Mileena didn't hesitate to follow the order and eagerly sat down at the table, watching Lewis carry two plates over before placing one down for and sitting on the opposite side of the table with her own.
Mileena had barely looked down at her plate, which contained a medium well steak, some boiled potatoes and a few vegetables to the side, before grabbing the meat with her bare hands and tearing into it.
"Mileena!" the older woman scolded, her raised voice snapping the hybrid from her bliss "you're not an animal, show some manners young lady", slowly Mileena placed the steak back onto her plate as Lewis handed her a towel to wipe her hands with, Lewis then pointed to the knife and fork on either side of the plate "now lets try again shall we?"
~A/N~ Eno-on: And the chapter is finished, a nice cool down from the insanity of the last chapter, and another adorable moment for Mileena.
Eno-on: They'll be a couple chapters before we start the next story arc and there's already a hint for what's coming.
Eno-on: Eno-on out.
