Hi all,
Here's the next chapter. Harry and Celeste continue exploring and encounter the optional boss.
Chapter 5
Harry sat in the darkened theatre room, his mind reeling from the scene he had just witnessed. The image of his mother's smiling face as she played with him as a baby kept flashing before his eyes, only to be quickly overshadowed by her confrontation with Uriel.
"I don't understand," he muttered, running a hand through his messy hair. "How can something so beautiful turn so horrific in an instant?"
Celeste hovered nearby, her wings beating softly. "Harry, are you alright?"
He looked up at her, his green eyes clouded with confusion and pain. "I saw her, Celeste. My mum. She was so... happy. So full of life. And then..."
Harry's voice trailed off as he grappled with the abrupt ending of the video. What happened after the explosion rocked through the room? The most likely answer was that his mother had died that night. After all, he'd been placed with the Dursleys, who had told him his parents died in a car crash.
"Why would they lie?" Harry wondered aloud, a new surge of anger mixing with his grief. "Was it just to cause me pain, or did they really not know?"
Celeste landed gently on his shoulder, her tiny hand resting on his neck in a comforting gesture. "Maybe they were trying to protect you, in their own misguided way."
Harry scoffed. "Protect me? The Dursleys?"
Before he could dwell on it further, Harry became aware that the notification icon on his HUD was flashing. He opened it with a thought, his eyes widening in astonishment as he read:
Main Quest: Divided Memory
Description: Harry Potter has stumbled upon a theatre room within the tutorial dungeon, revealing a fragment of a haunting memory from his past involving his mother and an unknown intruder. Desperate to uncover the full truth of that fateful Halloween night, Harry must explore several dungeons to find another theatre room and piece together the entire memory.
Main Objective: Locate a theatre room within one of the dungeons scattered throughout England to obtain the full memory of that Halloween night.
Main Quest Completion: 5000 Exp
Time Limit: 1 year.
Quest Difficulty: Variable
Failure: Remain in the dark about crucial events from his past, potentially endangering him in unforeseen ways.
You have completed Sub-Objective 1: Find the (theatre room) to discover personal information on the player's past. Rewards will be given after leaving the dungeon and completing the main objective.
"Well, that's certainly a good motivation," Harry said, closing the menu. He turned to Celeste, explaining, "It looks like we've got a new quest. We need to find another theatre room in another dungeon."
Celeste's wings fluttered with excitement. "Ooh, does that mean we'll finally get to leave this dreary library?"
Harry nodded but then hesitated. "Eventually, yes. But first, I need to master wandless magic."
"Wandless magic?" Celeste tilted her head, confused. "You mean you haven't been doing it by yourself all this time? Are humans really that talentless?"
Harry swiped at her. "I'm still good enough to squash you like a bug."
Celeste giggled and dodged his hand effortlessly. "You're going to need to be faster than that to catch me!"
Harry's thoughts returned to the scene he had witnessed. His mother and Uriel had both wielded wands to channel their magic. Were there others like them out there? Did his father also possess magical abilities? If a wand was necessary to focus magic, it would explain his inability to control his magic growing up. The quest to master wandless magic suddenly took on a new significance in light of this revelation.
"What about the humans in your realm?" Harry asked. "Did they use wands?"
"Not that I can remember. However, as previously stated, I had little interaction with them. Perhaps they didn't need wands or lacked the ability to make them."
"A wand must be a focus," Harry said. "Which means that wandless magic is rare and difficult to perform."
Celeste nodded sagely as if she'd known this all along. "Of course! That's why you need a powerful familiar like me to help you."
Harry rolled his eyes but couldn't help smiling. He stood up, slapping his cheeks to refocus himself. There was no time to sit around when there were things to accomplish. "Come on, Celeste. Let's finish exploring this dungeon. We've got a lot of work ahead of us."
Harry and Celeste pressed on through the library's shadowy corridors, their movements growing more synchronised with each encounter. They dispatched two more Hexbound Tomes, giving Celeste enough experience to level up.
Harry opened Celeste's status window. He allocated points to boost her Vitality to fifteen, increasing her total HP to seventy-five. "Once we get you to a hundred, we can focus on other areas. For now, increasing your survivability is your top priority."
With Celeste now at level three, Harry returned their experience distribution to an even split.
A few minutes later, the dungeon switched to the weapon phase. Harry's grip on his dagger tightened, and his mind was already planning how to improve his sneak skill.
One advantage of phase shifts was that he could conserve his MP and continue exploring the dungeon without constantly returning to the safe zone. When he started exploring other dungeons, the safe zone wouldn't provide the same benefits as the tutorial dungeon, so being proficient in all areas was important.
Harry and Celeste pressed on, delving deeper into the library's corridors for the next hour. With each monster they encountered, their synergy grew stronger, and their movements became more fluid and coordinated. They continued to accumulate experience points and improve their skills.
As they navigated through the stacks, the dungeon's phases alternated between magic and weapons, keeping them on their toes. The constant flux provided an unexpected boon—Harry managed to obtain the loot drops from both the Razor's Edge and the Chomper. The phase shifts had increased the likelihood of these rare items appearing.
"Enchantment gems," he mused, holding up a crystal that pulsed with inner light. "Shame we can't use them yet."
Celeste flew closer, her curiosity evident. "Why not? They're so pretty!"
"My dagger doesn't have any enchantment slots," Harry explained, "and we haven't found an enchantment station to modify our equipment."
Their exploration soon yielded two more treasure chests. Harry's eyes lit up as he pried open the first one.
"Jackpot," he grinned, retrieving three vials of liquid. "Medium-quality restoration potions—one each for health, mana, and stamina. These pack more punch than the ones we found earlier."
Celeste blew a raspberry. "That's not what I would consider good loot!"
The second chest contained a single scroll, its parchment emitting a soft golden glow. The inscription on the front indicated that it was a consumable scroll that revealed one secret room within a dungeon.
"A seeker's scroll," Harry noted, carefully tucking it into his bag. "This could come in handy."
Their exploration of the southeastern area led them to a children's play area, which stood in stark contrast to the rest of the gloomy library. Harry crouched behind a small table, watching four Chompers patrol in a specific pattern. He could sense Celeste's nervous energy as she hovered near his ear.
"What's the plan?" she whispered. "They're too close together. If you attack one, the others will be on us in seconds."
"You're right. Even with a sneak attack, I can't take one down instantly with just my dagger." He paused, an idea forming. "It's time to test out your new skill."
"Cursed Weapon? Harry, that's risky. You'll be exposed and weakened."
"That's where you come in," Harry countered. "Your HP can handle it now. You distract one, and I'll take the other two."
Celeste hesitated, then set her tiny jaw. "Alright, let's do this. But if you get eaten, I'm not fishing you out of a Chomper's belly."
"Noted. On my signal."
Harry took a deep breath, mentally preparing himself for the challenge ahead. He nodded to Celeste, who touched his dagger with her tiny hands. "Cursed Weapon," she whispered, and the blade pulsed with an eerie, dark energy.
Harry's HP Halved: 70/70—Cursed Weapon effect active.
A wave of weakness washed over Harry. Yet, the dagger in his hand pulsed with dark energy, sending tingles up his arm. The conflicting sensations made his head spin, but the rush of power was intoxicating. Gritting his teeth against the discomfort, Harry sank into a low crouch, his footsteps silent on the worn library carpet.
The nearest Chomper loomed before him, its pages rustling softly as it swayed back and forth. In one fluid motion, he surged forward, the cursed dagger a blur of steel. It struck true, sinking deep into the monster's spine with a sickening crunch. The Chomper's yelp of surprise turned into a gurgle as its form wavered. The creature dissolved into motes of light.
Sneak attack successful! Chomper A defeated! Exp gained: 15
The notification barely registered before a chorus of angry rustling filled the air. The remaining Chompers whirled towards him, their covers snapping open and closed like hungry maws.
"Celeste, now!" he shouted.
The fairy burst into action. Shadow lances materialised around her tiny form, peppering the third Chomper with dark energy. While her attacks didn't tear through pages like Harry's dagger, they successfully drew the monster's attention.
Harry focused on his immediate threat. The Chomper before him lunged, pages spread wide. He ducked, feeling the rush of air as teeth made of paper snapped shut inches above his head. Seizing the opening, Harry slashed upwards, his empowered dagger carving a vicious arc across the monster's midsection.
The Chomper's howl of pain reverberated through the library. Harry watched its HP bar plummet, a grim satisfaction settling in his chest.
Chomper B HP: 10/40
A panicked cry cut through his focus. "A little help!"
Harry's head snapped around, eyes widening as he saw the Chomper pursuing Celeste. Despite her aerial acrobatics, the monster was gaining on her, its jaws snapping ever closer to her delicate wings. Time seemed to slow as Harry assessed the situation.
He needed to end this. Now.
Drawing on his newly acquired Wind Dash skill, Harry felt magic surge through his legs. The world blurred around him as he shot behind his current opponent. Before the Chomper could react, Harry's dagger found its mark, slicing clean through its form.
Chomper B was defeated! Exp gained: 15
Without pausing to catch his breath, Harry sprinted towards Celeste's attacker. The Chomper, single-mindedly focused on the fairy, never registered the new threat. Harry's dagger plunged into its side, the curse's dark energy ripping through pages like they were tissue paper.
Chomper C was defeated! Exp gained: 15
For a heartbeat, Harry thought it was over. Then a guttural roar filled the air. The last Chomper, driven to a frenzy by the loss of its companions, charged at Harry with reckless abandon. He tried to bring his dagger up, but exhaustion slowed his movements.
Pain exploded through Harry's arm as the Chomper's jaws clamped down. He could feel pages slicing into his flesh, the curse on his weapon amplifying every sensation. A scream tore from his throat, echoing off the library's shelves as his HP dropped precipitously.
Harry's HP: 49/70
Gritting his teeth against the pain, Harry stabbed repeatedly at the Chomper's head, finally forcing it to release its grip. As it staggered back, Celeste swooped in, peppering it with shadow lances. Her assault managed to finish the monster off.
Chomper D was defeated! Exp gained: 15
As the last motes of light faded, Harry sank to his knees, breathing heavily.
Celeste fluttered down to land on his shoulder, her tiny form trembling slightly. "We... we did it," she panted.
"Yeah, we make a pretty good team."
As they caught their breath, notifications began to pop up:
Congratulations!
Your Dagger Mastery Skill has levelled up to 2!
It boosts the damage dealt by daggers to 20% and the critical rate to 6%. In addition, there is a 5% chance of striking twice with a single hit.
You learnt a new skill by performing a specific action repeatedly!
Synergistic Strike | Level 1 | Active | Upgrade: 0/20 | Cost: 50 | Attribute: AGI |
Description: Harness the true potential of your dagger by synchronising it with other abilities. "Synergistic Strike" allows your dagger to adapt and leverage the power of an amplifying skill, resulting in heightened damage, precision, and additional effects.
* When activated, "Synergistic Strike" puts the user in a focused state for 10 seconds. During this time, any attack with the dagger that is used in conjunction with another amplifying skill gains enhanced effects.
* The damage of dagger attacks increases by 25% when used with another skill.
* Critical hit chance with the dagger is increased by 10% during the focused state.
* If the accompanying skill has an elemental attribute, the dagger inherits that attribute, dealing an additional 15% elemental damage of the same type.
* Any negative effects from the amplifying skill are increased by 50%.
Harry's grin widened at the new skill. Although it increased the danger, it would be a powerful tool in combination with Celeste's Cursed Amplifier skills.
His jubilation was short-lived. A low, menacing growl rumbled from behind a nearby bookshelf, sending chills down his spine. Harry's muscles tensed, but exhaustion slowed his reactions. Before he could even turn, a blur of teeth and paper erupted from the shadows.
"Harry, look out!" Celeste's scream pierced the air, but it was too late.
The fifth Chomper's jaws clamped onto Harry's shoulder with bone-crushing force. Pain exploded through him, white-hot and all-consuming. A strangled cry tore from his throat as he felt teeth sink deep into his flesh. Desperately, he clawed at the monster's maw, trying to pry it open, but his strength was fading fast.
Critical Hit! Harry's HP: 15/70
The notification flashed red in his vision, a stark reminder of how close to death he teetered.
"Get off him, you overgrown paperweight!" Celeste shrieked, her tiny form ablaze with fury. A shadow lance materialised before her, and she sent it streaking towards the Chomper. But in her panic, her aim faltered.
Harry's vision swam, darkness creeping at the edges. With monumental effort, he forced his hand to move, fingers fumbling for his dagger. In a last, desperate act, he drove the blade into the Chomper's eye.
The monster howled. Its grip loosened, and Harry stumbled backwards, nearly collapsing as the Chomper retreated.
Chomper's HP: 20/48
"C-Celeste," Harry gasped, his voice barely above a whisper. Blood soaked his shirt, the pain in his shoulder a constant, throbbing reminder of how close he'd come to death. "We need... to finish this..."
Celeste's face hardened, all traces of her usual playfulness gone. She gave a curt nod, then shot towards the Chomper like a purple bullet. She darted around its head, a dizzying blur of motion. The monster snapped at her repeatedly, momentarily forgetting about Harry.
Gritting his teeth against the searing agony, Harry forced himself to stand. The world tilted alarmingly, but he steadied himself. As the Chomper lunged at Celeste, he saw his chance. Summoning every last ounce of strength, Harry surged forward. His dagger plunged into the monster's back, sinking to the hilt.
The Chomper's final whimper was almost pitiful as it dissolved into motes of light.
Chomper E was defeated! Exp gained: 15
As the last glimmers faded, Harry's legs gave out. He crumpled to the ground, chest heaving with ragged breaths.
Celeste zipped to his side, her tiny face etched with concern. "Harry? Harry! Stay with me, you idiot!"
"I'm alright," Harry mumbled, though 'alright' was a gross overstatement. With trembling hands, he retrieved a healing potion from his belt and drunk it down. His HP climbed out of the danger zone, the edge of pain dulling to a more manageable throb.
"Come on," he said, pushing himself to his feet with a grimace. "We need to get to the safe room. I don't fancy another surprise like that."
Needing to replenish their resources, Harry and Celeste collapsed onto the bed in the safe zone and fell asleep immediately. Upon waking, Harry felt a lot better, his wound completely gone. He prepared a hearty meal for them both. As they ate, they reviewed their hard-earned gains.
Harry's experience points were enough to advance to level five. After careful consideration, he allocated his five AP to boost his Agility to fifteen, enhancing his overall combat speed and prowess. While Wind Dash was powerful, its high MP cost made him cautious of over-reliance.
His Spirit attribute increased to seventeen, bringing his total mana to two hundred and eighty-nine. The concealed detriment still gnawed at his potential, a constant reminder of an obstacle yet to be overcome.
"One day," he muttered, "I'll figure out how to get rid of that."
With four path points at his disposal and the looming threat of a boss encounter, Harry weighed his options. The Wind Elemental Grimoire provided two options: another offensive skill or Gust Leap. The latter's usefulness in the current dungeon was questionable, which led him to choose the new offensive skill.
He invested two path points to learn Gale Breaker.
Gale Breaker | Active | Level: 1 | Upgrade: 0/30 | Cost: 15 | Attribute: MAG/STR
Description: The caster sends out a concentrated blast of wind energy in a cone-shaped area in front of them. This burst deals moderate wind damage immediately to all enemies within the cone, physically knocking them back. The damage effectiveness is highest near the centre and decreases as it fans out.
* Deals minor-moderate damage to the targets.
* Spirit 30: increases the power, speed and range of the spell by 30%.
* Strength 30: doubles the power of the knockback effect.
* Upgrades to level 2 after killing 30 monsters.
Turning his attention to Celeste, Harry spent her experience to level her up to four. He boosted her Vitality to twenty and her total HP reached one hundred. Her Spirit had also increased, pushing her MP to an impressive three hundred.
"It's your turn to choose," Harry said, opening her skill menu.
Celeste's decision came swiftly. "Dark Resonance," she declared confidently.
Harry nodded, spending two of her path points to acquire the skill from her Shadow Assault Path. Its utility was immediately apparent.
Dark Resonance | Active | Level: Max | Upgrade: - | Cost: 5MP | Attribute: WIL
Description: A skill that doubles the attack power of any of Celeste's offensive spells in the Shadow Assault Path, and increases the chance of scoring a critical hit. It can be an effective way of dealing extra damage while saving MP. The caveat to this skill is that the spell needs to be cast before the offensive spell and it takes three seconds to activate.
* Willpower 35: Reduces activation time to 1.5 seconds
* Dexterity 25: Adds a 10% chance to instantly recast without using MP.
*Increases the chance to score a critical hit by 5%
* Can be combined with other enhancements for devastating effects.
* Repeated use within short periods may cause temporary recklessness and impaired judgement.
"This is an amazing skill," Harry mused. "Once you get some stronger magical skills, you are going to do some serious damage."
Celeste clapped her hands. "The birth of the battlemage fairy is here!"
Because her next skill in the Shadow Assault path required three path points, she chose not to spend them for the time being.
Before returning to the dungeon's depths, Harry retrieved the whetstone he had previously found, which restored a weapon's durability. When he touched it with the dagger, the whetstone dissolved, but the dagger immediately transformed. The nicks and tarnish of countless battles were no longer present. In their place was a blade of flawless perfection.
"Alright," Harry said, standing and stretching. "We're rested, fed, and upgraded. Time to see what else this dungeon has in store for us."
Harry and Celeste returned to where they last left off and explored the remainder of the southeastern corner. He found the last switch but encountered an unexpected obstacle. The switch is located in a small, sealed chamber with only a tiny opening—far too small for Harry to enter.
Harry groans in frustration. "We've come all this way, and now we're stuck?"
Celeste poked him in the cheek. "Hello? Have you forgotten about me? I think it's time for the star of the show to take centre stage."
Harry raises an eyebrow. "You mean..."
"That's right, big guy. It's Celeste's time!"
Celeste hovered at the edge of the tiny opening, her wings quivering with anticipation. She could feel Harry's worried gaze on her back as she prepared to enter.
"Be careful," Harry called out, his voice tight with concern.
Celeste flew into the chamber.
Her keen eyes swept the area. Dust motes swirled in her wake as she glided silently through the air, the musty scent of old books filling her nostrils. The lever loomed before her, comically oversized from her diminutive perspective. But before she could reach it, a shrill cry pierced the air. Celeste whirled around, her combat instincts kicking in.
From the shadows emerged a monster—a miniature book beast, perfectly sized for this confined space. Its pages rustled menacingly as it locked gazes with her, the sound echoing in the small chamber. Two paper wings unfurled from its back, lifting it into the air with a whisper of movement.
Micro Menace - Level 3 - Sentient Book Species.
The monster shrieked and flew towards her.
"Celeste!" Harry's voice echoed from outside. "What's happening?"
"Oh, nothing much," she called back, deftly dodging a swipe from the monster's paper-thin claws. The rush of air from the near-miss tickled her skin. "Just making a new friend!"
She summoned a shadow lance with a thought, grateful for the combat practice she had gained while fighting monsters with Harry. The creature moved quickly, but her agility gave her the advantage. They engaged in a deadly aerial ballet, with the confined space making dodging difficult, transforming the fight into a high-stakes game of reflexes.
"Shadow Lance!" Celeste cried as she hurled the weapon. Was announcing the attack necessary? No, but it sounded cool. The air crackled with dark energy as the lance pierced the monster's chest.
Micro Menace's HP: 32/40
The monster shrieked, its pages fluttering in agony. Celeste experienced a rush of excitement when she saw the damage. This was what an Umbra Fairy was meant to do: inflict pain on her enemies.
The Micro Menace retaliated, hurling razor-sharp pages into the air, the sound of slicing paper deafening in the cramped space. Celeste twisted and turned through the storm, avoiding every deadly projectile.
"Is that the best you've got?" Celeste taunted, summoning another shadow lance.
The Micro Menace's eyes narrowed. In a flash, its wings extended, reaching for Celeste like grasping fingers.
Celeste's eyes widened. She barrel-rolled to the side, feeling the rough edges of the wings brush against her wings. The close call sent a jolt of adrenaline through her tiny body. She retaliated by throwing another shadow lance.
Micro Menace's HP: 22/40
The monster staggered back. When it recovered, It launched another Paper Storm, more frenzied than before. This time, a page managed to nick Celeste's arm, drawing a thin line of pain.
Celeste's HP: 93/100
"Okay, playtime's over," Celeste scowled.
She concentrated her power, channelling it into her final attack. "Dark Resonance," she whispered, feeling a surge of power pass through her. While she waited for the skill to take effect, she dodged another flurry of papers. When she was ready, a shadow lance twice the normal size materialised before her, pulsing with dark energy. She couldn't feel the pulsing power in her veins.
"Take this!" she shouted, launching the massive lance.
Shadow Lance bypassed the opponent's defence!
Critical hit! Micro Menace defeated! Exp gained: 16
The Micro Menace let out a final, pitiful cry before crashing to the ground and dissolving into motes of light.
"And that," she announced to the empty room, "is how it's done."
Celeste noticed something glinting on the ground. She swooped down, her curiosity piqued. A card? The money brought a smile to her face, but it was the card that truly intrigued her.
Library Card: Provides access to the Cursed Librarian's library (optional boss).
"What type of loot is this?" Celeste complained. "Is this something I can eat?"
As she gathered the loot, memories of her past life flashed through Celeste's mind. The constant struggle, the gnawing hunger... No, she wouldn't go back to that. She would become wealthy and powerful, no matter what it took, in case she was forced into a similar situation and needed protection. Nothing was guaranteed, and you could only rely on yourself. Her relationship with Harry had the potential to be good, but only time would tell.
Even close friends are susceptible to betrayal... A fairy's face appeared in her mind, her smile cruel as she raised her hand to inflict... Shaking off her reverie, she flew to the switch and pulled it with all her might. A deep rumbling echoed through the dungeon.
Holding the items awkwardly, Celeste exited the chamber, eager to share her victory with Harry.
After Celeste handed Harry the library card, he received a prompt indicating that the boss's library was located near the beginning of where he had entered. He used Route Mastery to find the shortest path back to the starting point, where they began their search for the library. It was located at the first dead end he discovered, where the bookcase had shifted to reveal the entrance.
"You do realise this is an optional boss," Celeste said. "That means that this isn't the exit to the dungeon. What's the point of fighting it?"
"Loot?"
"Say no more."
The ornate door beckoned, but they didn't immediately move to enter.
"Ready for this?" Harry asked, his grip tightening on his dagger. He glanced at Celeste, hovering by his shoulder, her tiny face set with determination.
Celeste nodded. "Let's show this bookworm what we're made of. Just try not to trip over your own feet, big guy."
Harry pushed open the doors. A wave of stale air washed over them, carrying the musty scent of ancient tomes and something darker.
As Harry and Celeste entered the vast chamber, their eyes were drawn to the imposing figure at its centre. The Corrupted Librarian stood hunched over a massive tome, its form a disturbing blend of human and book.
Its skin was a sickly, pale parchment, covered in intricate, shifting tattoos that resembled flowing text. The monsters' fingers were elongated and ink-stained, ending in sharp quill-like points. Its eyes glowed with an eerie, eldritch light.
"Scan," Harry whispered, determined to find its weaknesses before it detected their presence.
Elite monsters cannot be scanned. Defeating it will count as being scanned.
Harry swore loudly, alerting the monster.
The Librarian's head snapped up, its eyes blazing with an otherworldly light that sent shivers down Harry's spine. Its voice, a discordant symphony of whispers, seemed to come from everywhere at once, accusing them of violating its domain.
The Librarian's hands moved in a blur, tracing arcane symbols that left faint, glowing trails in the air.
The dungeon has shifted into the Weapon Phase.
"We're in the weapon phase," Harry called out, his grip tightening on his dagger until his knuckles turned white. The familiar weight of the blade was reassuring, but he knew it might not be enough. This shift complicated their strategy, but retreat was no longer an option.
At the Librarian's command, two Razor's Edges materialised in a swirl of pages.
Celeste, her tiny face set with determination, zoomed towards one of the summoned creatures. A shadow lance formed in her hands, dark energy crackling along its length.
Harry engaged the other Razor's Edge. He ducked and weaved through a storm of razor-sharp pages, the sound of slicing air uncomfortably close to his ears. Each near-miss was a reminder of how precarious their situation was. With a series of quick, precise strikes, he managed to dispatch his opponent. The Razor's Edge dissolved into motes of light.
The Librarian, seemingly unfazed by the loss of its minion, began a long, complex incantation. To his horror, the bookshelves around them began to shift and move, grinding across the floor to create a nightmarish, ever-changing maze.
"Celeste!" Harry shouted. "We need to interrupt that spell!" Without waiting for a response, he sprinted towards the Librarian, leaping over a suddenly protruding shelf with desperate agility.
Celeste, having just vanquished her opponent, nodded grimly. Her tiny form pulsed with dark energy as she cried out, "Dark Resonance!" With a cry of effort, she hurled a massive shadow lance at the Librarian.
The spell struck true, slamming into the Librarian with enough force to stagger it. Its concentration broken, the creature snarled in fury, its form flickering like a faulty hologram. It roared, abandoning its usual methodical approach in favour of raw, destructive power. A burst of fire erupted from its grimoire, turning the air into a scorching hellscape.
Harry dove behind a moving bookshelf, feeling the heat sear his skin even through his clothes. The acrid smell of singed hair filled his nostrils as he rolled to his feet, heart pounding so hard he thought it might burst from his chest. Celeste, caught on the edge of the blast, wasn't so fortunate. She spiralled through the air, her delicate wings smoking slightly.
"Celeste!" Harry cried out. He watched with bated breath as she righted herself, relief flooding through him when she steadied her flight.
Celeste's HP: 61/100
"I'm alright," Celeste said, but Harry didn't miss the slight tremor in her voice or the way her wings fluttered erratically. "Now it's personal!"
The battle raged on, and Harry and Celeste adapted as best they could to the ever-shifting battlefield. Bookshelves slid across the floor, forming new walls and passages at random. Loose pages whirled in miniature tornadoes, obscuring vision and threatening a thousand paper cuts to exposed skin.
During the weapon phases, Harry relied on his dagger and his wits. He used Wind Dash to close distances quickly, the magical boost allowing him to dart between the moving obstacles. His blade flashed, scoring hits whenever an opening presented itself. Celeste, leveraging her diminutive size, provided crucial aerial support.
When the dungeon shifted to magic phases, their strategy changed. They fell back, unleashing spells from a distance. Harry's wind blades whistled through the air, while Celeste's shadow lances sought vulnerable spots. Both were acutely aware of the Librarian's devastating magical potential, and neither wanted to risk a direct hit.
"Its power is increasing with every spell it casts!" Celeste shouted, her voice strained as she corkscrewed to avoid a barrage of arcane missiles. The magical bolts exploded against a bookshelf, sending charred paper raining down. "We need to end this quickly, or we'll be outmatched!"
Harry nodded grimly, his chest heaving with exertion. He could feel his resources running dangerously low. They needed a plan, and fast. His mind raced, discarding one desperate idea after another until, finally, a seed of a strategy took root.
With trembling hands, he quickly downed a minor healing potion, followed by a mana restorative. It wouldn't be enough for a prolonged fight, but it might just see him through one final, decisive move.
"Celeste," he called out, ducking behind a toppled bookshelf for a moment's respite. "Can you cast Cursed Weapon on my blade?"
Understanding dawned in Celeste's eyes. She nodded, touching her tiny hands to Harry's dagger. "Cursed Weapon," she said. Dark energy pulsed along the blade, and Harry felt his health instantly halve. It was a risky move, but there was no room for half-measures now.
"I need you to get its attention," Harry said. "Can you do that?"
A mischievous grin spread across Celeste's face, a glimpse of her usual spirit shining through the battle-weariness. "Distraction is my middle name!" With a wink, she zipped out from cover, peppering the Librarian with a barrage of tiny shadow lances.
While the Librarian was distracted by Celeste's aerial acrobatics and stinging insults, Harry seized his moment. With a thought, he activated Wind Dash, feeling a surge of energy course through his body. The world seemed to slow around him as he burst into motion.
Harry weaved through the maelstrom of flying books and magical attacks. He leapt over shifting shelves and slid under arcs of destructive magic, every fibre of his being focused on reaching his target.
Time seemed to crystallise as Harry made his final lunge. The Librarian, alerted by some sixth sense, began to turn. Their eyes met for a fraction of a second—surprise reflected in the creature's inhuman gaze. Harry's empowered dagger plunged deep into the Librarian's chest, the cursed blade sliding through magical defenses like they weren't even there.
A critical hit. The Librarian's form flickered violently, books and pages scattering from its disintegrating body. It reached out with failing arms, as if trying to embrace Harry in its final moments. But the strength had already left its form.
As they caught their breath, surveying the destruction around them, a notification appeared:
Congratulations!
You have defeated the Elite Monster: Corrupted Librarian.
Bestiary entry unlocked.

Celeste + 250 exp.
A Tome of Chaos was obtained.
100 pounds obtained.

As the last of the light faded, a leather-bound book thudded to the floor—the Tome of Chaos. Harry picked it up, feeling the power thrumming within its pages.
"We did it," Celeste breathed, settling on Harry's shoulder. Her tiny chest heaved with exertion. "That was intense. I think I need a vacation. Do fairies get vacation time?"
Harry chuckled, wincing slightly as the adrenaline wore off and he began to feel his injuries. "Yeah, but we make a pretty good team. As for vacation... let's start with a nap, shall we?"
They moved towards the door. Only the central area remained to be explored, which should be simple compared to this fight.
So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Harry and Celeste finish up in the dungeon.
